Ice Tutorial

First of all, download the NHL2004 ice templates: http://www.mediafire.com/file/y233na8v9m72...feat.+Temps.rar

Open the template with Photoshop or GIMP. Then you create a new layer (1024x2048, transparency) above the Ice Color layer (at the bottom). Use this layer for all the logos you want to have on the ice. When you're done with that you duplicate this layer (the duplicate should be directly above the original) and set the opacity of both to 50-60%. Add Gaussian Blur (about 1.6) to the duplicate.
Then you can choose your center line, there are always two layers for one line style, make both visible. You can also decide if you want to have the trapezoid on the ice.
Now you're almost done. At the top of the layers you can find the Scratches layer; make it visible if it wasn't before and set the opacity to 30-40%.

This should be it, don't forget to save the ice (don't overwrite the template). Now you go to your NHL 2004/gamedata folder and open arena.viv with BigGUI. Search the team_xx.viv you need (xx stands for the team ID, you can find those in the jersey tutorial above) and export it. Open the team_xx.viv and export ilogo_xx.fsh (not logo_xx.fsh!). Now use FshEd to open ilogo_xx.fsh and use the Graphics Importer (in the Tools section) to import your ice. Save the .fsh, import it to the team_xx.viv (don't forget to compress and rebuild) and import that one to the arena.viv. If you didn't make any mistakes your ice should appear in game now, enjoy it ;)

Board & Upper Ads Tutorial

Before we start, download the board and upper ads templates:
Boards: http://www.mediafire.com/file/6h6t0vyz4x0e...or_NHL_2004.zip
Upper Ads:
http://www.mediafire.com/?y6a3hefbczvvxuz

These are rather simple addons. Let's start with the boards:

Open nhl2004_board_temp_drezz with Photoshop/GIMP. It should contain two layers, one with the board texture and one with numbers. The board texture layer HAS TO be set to visible, the numbers layer needs to be set to invisible before you save, it's just a help for you so that you know where the logos will appear in game (check the screenshot in the .rar).
Put all the logos you want on the board texture layer, watch out that they don't touch the board above or below, otherwise it'll be a mess. Once again: before you save, make sure that the numbers layer is invisible. And yes, that's it :D
Go to NHL2004/gamedata, open arena.viv with BigGUI and export the ads_xx.fsh (xx= team ID). Open the .fsh with FshEd and import your boards (A001) . Save the .fsh and import it to the arena.viv (don't forget to compress).

Now we'll have a look at the upper ads:
You've got three groups: LCD, LED, and UAD (light-based). Simply turn off the "credits" layer, place your design above the background layer, sharpen that layer and save as PNG. You can extend the boarder layer to make it seem continuous.
Open the ads_xx.fsh and import the upper ads to UAD1 - UAD6. Save the .fsh and import it to the arena.viv.

As you can see, those are pretty easy add-ons. The only thing you can do wrong is the image sizes. The board image should be 1024x512 and the upper ads should be 256x64.

Roster tutorial by Yowza

It's a guide with Flyermania's NHL04 roster attribute standards.
This is meantime Beta, I welcome your help and suggestions. Thank you, Jimbo, for your Guide.

You can find attribute templates for player types and other good information about it on Hockey Attributes Database.

SKATERS
OVERALL
It´s simply overall calculation of attributes, can be slightly modified (via other Attributes) for AI Lines changing.

SPEED
From the fastest skater to the slowest. (99-65)

ACCELERATION
The best accelerating player has 65, other good about 60. Every average player has 50.

AGILITY
The most agile player has 65, other good about 60. Every average player has 50.

DEKING ABILITY
From the best deke master to the worst. (99-50)

BALANCE
From the most powerful player to the "ant". (99-60)

PUCK CONTROL
Player with the best control of the puck has 75, other good have between 70 and 65. Every average player has 50.

ENDURANCE
From full season players to guys, who play few games in the major level and get quickly fatigued. (90-57).

PASSING
From the best passer to the worst. (99-60)

SHOT POWER
From the hardest shooter to the weakest. (99-68)

SHOT ACCURACY
From the most accurate shooter to the worst. (99-57)

HERO RATING
From the most consistent player, who has almost every game good feedback, to the “day and night”-like player. (99-57)

AGGRESSION
From the best defender to the “what does the Defense mean?” one. (99-60)

CHECKING
From “The Policeman” to the “gentleman”. (99-52)

TOUGHNESS
Fighting skill. (99-50)

FIGHTING
Depends on how often player goes to fight, but mainly “Never”.

RESIST PENALTIES
Guys, who aren’t nailed very much, have about 60-70, but most of players have 59.

RESIST INJURIES
From the “Ironman” to the “glass-type” player (99-72).

FACEOFFS
Centers: From the faceoff guru to the loser. (99-60) Other: The same rating for their FO positioning. (99-60)

POTENTIAL
From a big young talented fellow, to an oldie in his career ending years. (99-60)

PRESTIGE
From the 1st liner to the lower league newbie, scrub. (99-65)

SHOOT-PASS
Globally set to 15 for most players. This way the AI doesn't shoot from insane positions, top shooters of the league have their Shoot-Pass lowered.

PASS-CARRY
Globally set to 15 for all. AI actually makes more creative plays in the offensive zone.

DEFENSE-OFFENSE
Globally set to 0 for all. It avoids large number of breakaways and players more hold the position.

GOALIES
OVERALL
It´s simply overall calculation of attributes, can be slightly modified (via other Attributes) for setting accurate goaltender hierarchy in the team.

SPEED
From the goalie, who quickly moves from side to side, to the slowest one. (90-75)

RECOVER
From the goalie, who quickly recovers to his proper position, to the slowest one. (now 65-60, I suggest some changes)

AGILITY
The most agile goalie often shows some breathtaking saves, the less can´t do them well. (now stays on 50 for everyone, I suggest a complete change)

BREAKAWAYS
A true breakaway specialist should have 75, but most of the goalies have 68.

FIVE HOLE
From the “door-shutter” to the goalies, who usually have “NHL Open Days”. (85-79)

REBOUND CONTROL
From the goalie, who can cover the puck well and totally SAVE the shot, to the one, who gives lots of rebounds after an attempt. (now stays 59 for everyone, I suggest some changes)

ENDURANCE
From the goalie, who can be in the goal for almost whole season, to some lower league newcomers, who are adapting for the higher goaltending level. (now some goalies have about 90, but I suggest max. 83-85, 50 is the lower)

PASSING
Marty Turco-type puck controlling lovers can have values to 60, but most of goaltenders are on 50.

GLOVE HIGH
Some glove specialists, who are good in the upper side of the goal, can have to 83, but most of goalies are 79.

GLOVE LOW
Some glove specialists, who are good in the lower side of the goal, can have to 80, but most of goalies are about 77-75.

STICK HIGH
Good stick savers, who cover up the upper side of the goal well, can have to 85, but most of goalies are 81.

STICK LOW
Good stick savers, who cover up the lower side of the goal well, can have to 87, but most of goalies are about 85-83.

POKE CHECK
From the goalies, who check the puck very often, to the low-freq checkers. (90-70)

TOUGHNESS
From the goalie, who can quickly bounce back after a tough goal, to the one, who still thinks about “What the .. it was? :( “. Simply their mental endurance. (now it stays 50 for everybody, I suggest changes)

FIGHTING
I think most of goalies have “Never”, even though they fight sometimes, but it randomly happens, when you accept the opponent’s fight.

INTENSITY
From the goalie, who concentrates well on the game for the whole match, to the one, who loses it quite soon. (95-68)

POTENTIAL
Same rules like for skaters. (99-60)

STYLE
0: Stand-up, but almost nobody uses it now, I think it should be used for Brodeur’s specific style.
1: For the goalies, who have their own hybrid style, like Turco, Thomas, Miller.
2: Butterfly – the most common style today. Giguere or Luongo adopted it very well, today’s young goalies are conduced to use it.

POSITIONING
0: Horrible shot to shot position.
1: Average shot to shot position.
2:Excellent shot to shot position.

FLOPPINESS
0: Not very floppy goalie.
1: Average floppiness.
2: “Fish outta water” floppiness like Hašek.

CONSISTENCY
0: Minor league level from save to save.
1: NHL backup quality from save to save.
2: NHL starting goaltender from save to save.

PADDLE DOWN
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMr0FuMbzlw

ENFORCERS
For better understanding, read this. Thanks to trent.

POSITION
Every time is set as a Center.

OVERALL
They have to be lowest rated centers and forwards in the lineup.

SPEED
They are not very fast, about 70-80.

ACCELERATION
Nothing to say, simply 50.

AGILITY
For all is 50.

DEKING ABILITY
Same rules like for skaters.

BALANCE
Usually very high about 95, only few of them have about 85.

PUCK CONTROL
Lowest – 50.

ENDURANCE
Maximally 70, but majorly from lowest 57 to 65. For few is allowed to have 50.

PASSING
Standard is to have 50, some guys can have to 65.

SHOT POWER
Some hard-shooters can have 80, but mostly is about 70.

SHOT ACCURACY
For enforcers is allowed and set to have 50, few of them can have the global skater lowest rank, 57.

HERO RATING
It depends on their commonality of winning the fight – usual winners can have it high about 90, the worse about 70.

AGGRESSION
Is usually very high about 87-95. (maybe there should be a change? because aggression is a defensive ability and I don’t think that Brashear is equal to Lidstrom)

CHECKING
Very low. Max. 68, usually about 58. Yes, they should have way more, but that will cause AI auto-line calling them to the penalty killing formation – fudge. So we have to set them that low.

TOUGHNESS
Usually very high about 90, for them is a KEY ability because of their job - fighting. But the worse ones can have about 70.

FIGHTING
Often – is not used, because of the very big PIM number, now there aren't that guys like Domi or Probert.
Sometimes – for the major enforcers, their main job is to drop the gloves. And some frequent fighters, who also can play some hockey, can have this.
Rarely – some tough guys, who CAN fight, when is the right time for it, but they aren’t just enforcers.

RESIST PENALTIES
Like for skaters, is set to 59.

RESIST INJURIES
Same rule as for skaters, can depend on their vulnerability to get injuried when fighting. (99-72)

FACEOFFS
They are set as centers, so they go to faceoffs. But they usually have 60, if not a specialist.

POTENTIAL
Same rules like for skaters. (99-60)

PRESTIGE
Very low, because they are the 4th liners and they don’t spend much time on ice. (75-65)

SHOOT-PASS
Set 15 for all. They don’t shoot very often.

PASS-CARRY
Same rule like for skaters.

DEFENSE-OFFENSE
Same rule like for skaters.

Ok then hit Save button, open up BigGui, load the proper team_XX.viv file and hit the IMPORT button, choose the .fsh file and hit OK, then select the ilogo.fsh file you've imported and compress it with the button COMPRESS, then hit rebuild..

then open arena.viv and import the team_XX.viv you've edited and NOT compress it, just hit rebuild after importing..

hope it helps ;)

Hey everyone, I'm trying to import my own ice into the game following your instructions, but something keeps going wrong. Following your instructions, I import the ice into the fsh, then into the team.viv (in this case it's Anaheim), then to arena.viv. I compress/rebuild the file at the team.viv stage, then just rebuild at the arena.viv stage. NHL starts as normal, but when it loads a game, it hangs indefinitely.

I looked at the original default NHL 04 ilogo_00 fsh and I notice that all it is is the Ducks center-ice logo + circle, not the entire ice as in the template. Why is the template the entire ice, then? Did I make a mistake somewhere or is there something else I have to do to the template before it can be loaded properly into the fsh?

Incidentally, just to make sure that I could import an ice texture at all based on the default center-ice fsh, I made a slight adjustment to it. The game loads fine with the "adjusted" Ducks center ice logo...

Any help I can get with this would be really appreciated. Thanks

Couldn't download the upper ads template due to some KGB-inspired dictatorship message considering the Megaupload site.

Is it possible to download them from somewhere else?

I'm also curious about the things mentioned in the post above considering the templates and the difference to the original files.

You can download an LCD Template Here, but that's the most I can help you with.
Hope it helps :)

As well, when you duplicate the layer to add the blur, the layer below I would suggest boosting the opacity to 70%;
- Doesn't cause any discoloration
- Doesn't cancel out any blur effect on the layer above

Thanks a lot! They are great.

As for the problem mentioned by zbguy, I solved that problem by extracting the original ilogo file with BigGui and FshEd, then I used the clone stamp in Photoshop to erase the original logo, just keeping the faceoff circle and saving the file as a template. After that I :

1. Copied the template file (to avoiding to overwrite the template).

2. Opened the image file with the logo I wanted to add to the game.

3. Re-sized the logo to the right size for the template copy.

4. Added a new layer to the logo file, chooing the layer option "multiply".

5. Used the "eyedropper tool" to get the color of the ice from the ice template copy.

6. Filled the new layer on the logo file with the ice color, after that using the option "flatten image" for the image logo.

7. Used the "magic wand" tool to first select, then invert the logo file.

8. Copied and pasted the logo to the ice template copy file.

9. Saved the ice template copy file with a new name, like iceXX bmp (xx for the number of the ilogo image).

10. Imported the icexx.bmp file to the ilogo_xx.fsh.

11: Imported the ilogo_xx.fsh file to team_xx with FshEd.

12. Imported the team_xx file to the game with BigGui. :perfect:
