They started slow but by the time the shots were coming regulary on goal they had already killed the game. <br />

Dainius Zubrus had two goals, his first two in the playoffs, and Ron Hextall came up huge by stopping thirty-two shots as the Flyers won 6-0 against the Ottawa Senators to re-gain the lead in the series.

<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">Although the score say otherwise, it was in fact the Senators who were dominating the game at first. It all started after the Flyers scored an early goal.<br />
Mikael Renberg got first to a dumped puck in the Senators zone and with a nice move he deked past Sergei Gonchar and had an empty street towards the goal. <br />
But just as he was about to shoot, Wade Redden got to the puck with his stick and changed the direction of the puck, leading to it sliding past Tugnutt.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Renberg_1_0_1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Renberg_1_0_2-1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
But after that goal, the Flyers didn't get through the Senators defense. They played the exact tight and disciplined hockey as the previous game and <br />
stopped the Flyers from even getting shots on goal. On a powerplay nine minutes in, the Flyers didn't get a single shot on goal. And when Kjell Samuelsson ended that powerplay one minute in by taking a minor for holding, the Senators gained some more momentum. But the Flyers defended themselves well and Ron Hextall played great in the period, stopping all thirteen shots that the Senators fired. The Flyers only got three shots on goal but had a one-goal lead, a lead that felt far from secure.<br /></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="21" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><strong>Second Period</strong></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">The Senators kept dominating the Flyers in the second. Although the Flyers defended themselves well, their offense had been forced to a halt. <br />
They just couldn't get through the Senators defense. As a result of this the crowd at the CoreStates Center started booing, not the right thing to do perhaps to <br />
fire up their team. But some cheers were heard from the stands as the Flyers managed to kill a penalty on Petr Svoboda at 11:40. Less than two minutes later, Ron Hextall caught a puck in his glove and put it in to play immediately, firing out of the Flyers zone to the left. John LeClair chased after the puck, took it, went past Sergei Gonchar before firing a huge slapshot that passed Ron Tugnutt's left pad with just a few inches.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/LeClair_2_0_1-3.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/LeClair_2_0_2-3.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
And it didn't take long until the Flyers scored again. After the following face-off, Dainius Zubrus fired a shot from the right that Tugnutt left a rebound on. Vaclav Prospal tried to fire a shot but was stopped by Lance Pitlick. Instead, Prospal went behind and around the net and passed it to Chris Therien in the slot. Tugnutt saved the puck but left a rebound and Dainius Zubrus could shove it in.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Zubrus_3_0_1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Zubrus_3_0_2.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
Just thirteen seconds later, Andreas Dackell had to head to the penalty box to sit out a minor for hooking. The Flyers were all over the Senators net and the earlier, tight defense that they had displayed was shattered. Tugnutt kept it out throughout the penalty but the Flyers had in a span of just three minutes taken over the game and now it was the Senators who was forced to retreat. The Flyers fired just four shots in the first thirteen minutes, but after the 2-0 goal they fired fifteen.<br />
As they went out to the dressing room after the period ended, the Flyers went out with cheers from the crowd in their back and some re-gained confidence.<br /></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><p><strong>Third Period</strong><br />
</p></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">After that awful closing minutes in the second, the Senators shapened their play and was on the same level as the Flyers. <br />
But they had a three-goal deficit in their back and things weren't looking bright for them. And things went pitch-black at 05:54. When Andreas Dackell got his second penalty of the night, Rod Brind'Amour landed a heavy bodycheck on Wade Redden in the Senators zone, leading to to him dropping the puck. Dale Hawerchuk took it and fired a wristshot past a screened Tugnutt and ended the night for him as he was replaced by Damian Rhoades. <br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Hawerchuk_4_0-1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Tugnutt_Out.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
But replacing Tugnutt wasn't perhaps the best idea. Right after the following face-off, Daniel Lacroix, with some difficulties, fed the puck to Dainius Zubrus who went into the zone on the left and despite having Alexei Yashin on him, he managed to fire away a shot that easily found it's way into the net.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Zubrus_5_0_1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Zubrus_5_0_2.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
The game was of course already over but on a powerplay about one and a half minute later, the Flyers once again found a hole behind Rhoades.<br />
And it came from the hands of Rod Brind'Amour. Starting from his own zone, he skated past every Senator that was in his way and when he got into the offensive zone, he fired a quick wrister that Rhoades didn't have a chance of taking.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/BrindAmour_6_0.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
The Flyers never got close to score after that goal but didn't try as hard either. The rest of the period was focused on getting Ron Hextall another shutout and<br />
although the defense stopped a few chances, Hextall made most of the job and was brilliand the last three minutes as the Flyers first got a penalty on Kjell Samuelsson at 17:08 and another one on Petr Svoboda at 19:34. The Senators had their chances but Hextall saved them all and made sure he got his third shutout in the post-season.<br /></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><strong>Post-game</strong></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">This was of course a huge boost for the Flyers confidence as it was gone for about four periods in total. That 2-0 goal in the second period sorta blew the psycic barrier and gave the Flyers offense a much needed push. But they also got a little help from the Senators goaltenders, as both Tugnutt and Rhoades didn't have their best night. And it is perhaps that reason that might have settled the series. With just one win away from the Eastern Conference Finals, the Flyers will give it all in game 6. And with the easy goals they got in this game, they might have a physcological advantage against Tugnutt, who will likely start the next game. <br /></td>

the Senators really gave it all and wasn't going to give it up that easy. But thanks to Ron Hextall<br />
the game was won.<br />
<br />
Hextall stopped thirty-two shots and Joel Otto and Daniel Lacroix both scored in the first period, while being shorthanded, as the Flyers sent the Ottawa Senators out of the playoffs by winning 4-2.

<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">The Flyers went out on the ice playing perhaps their most offensive hockey so far in this post-season. With no consideration of defending their goal, they wanted an early goal on Ron Tugnutt. And Trent Klatt almost scored two minutes in on a breakaway but hit the left post. Nine minutes in, Calle Johansson was handed a minor for tripping and with the offense they've displayed earlier, a goal seemed to be near. But their powerplay was disastrous. The Senators could easy hold them off and kill the penalty. But the Flyers played the same on a shorthanded situation and did something that they hadn't done in the entire season: score two goals on the same penalty kill. The second penalty kill led by Dale Hawerchuk pushed the Senators down in their own zone and put the pressure on. And it was Hawerchuk who went behind and around the net, deked down Ron Tugnutt on his knees and put the puck up high.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Hawerchuk_1_0-2.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
And about forty-seconds later, Dan Lacroix got to a puck dumped in by Eric Desjardins and and went in towards the net and score on the exact <br />
same way as Hawerchuk. <br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Lacroix_2_0-1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
And about twenty seconds later, Wade Redden took a minor for roughing and the Flyers were close to score 3-0 here but failed to do so.<br />
When the period ended, the Flyers clearly had all the momentum even though it didn't felt like they were going 100%. But winning the 17-6 might prove otherwise.<br /></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="21" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><strong>Second Period</strong></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">But their momentum would soon shrink. The Senators came out with totally different attitude and were the better team. They kept preventing the Flyers from changing their lines properly. And on one of those occasions, Daniel Alfredsson could easily advance into their zone and find Shawn McEachern by the first post. <br />
And with a one-timer he put it past Ron Hextall and the Flyers first-line could only watch.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/McEachern_2_1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
And just like that the game got more exciting. For a few minutes, the scale was standing still and you couldn't tell which way it would tilt. And twelve minutes in, it fell towards the Flyers. Shjon Podein got the puck from Petr Svoboda just outside the Senators zone on the right. He advanced towards the net but hit traffic and went behind the net and fed Joel Otto with a pass and, despite being checked by Chasse, put it past a sliding Tugnutt, making it 3-1.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Otto_3_1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
And on the following face-off, Eric Lindros won the puck out to Kjell Samuelsson who immediately passed it to John LeClair. And LeClair just went into the Senators zone and fired his hard slapshot past Tugnutt's shoulder and into the net. <br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/LeClair_4_1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
But after dropping a one-goal deficit to a three-goal deficit, the Senators weren't done yet. They kept worrying the Flyers net and only the fine play of Ron Hextall kept the puck out. Denny Lambert tried to fire his team up some more by going after Eric Lindros, who accepted the invite. It became fight, but Lindros eventually<br />
got a series of right punches in and floored Lambert. <br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Lindros_Lambert.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
But the Flyers had to spend the rest of the period short-handed as the referee had found an obstruction hooking on Petr Svoboda in a situation just before the fight.<br />
But despite being pressed hard by the Senators, the Flyers could keep their 4-1 lead to the end of the period. Although playing not as good as in the first period and losing the shots 12-15, the Flyers had lady luck with them but should also thank Ron Hextall for his superb goaltending so far.<br /></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><p><strong>Third Period</strong><br />
</p></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">The Senators well all in for the last period. They gave the Flyers only a handful of chances and spent most of the period on the offense. <br />
They were keeping Ron Hextall busy and he made his best to keep the puck out. But he lost focus about eight minutes in as Daniel Alfredsson were advancing towards the net on a breakaway. Firing what was looking a pretty easy backhand, Hextall somehow allowed it to pass him and suddenly it was 4-2 and the Sens had contact.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Alfredsson_4_2.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Alfredsson_4_2_2.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
But just over a minute later Dale Hawerchuk was so close to wrap this game up. Ron Tugnutt lost his head after going out behind the net to play the puck. Without looking up, he just threw the puck away and Hawerchuk was there to take it. Quickly realizing his mistake, Tugnutt threw himself in front of the net and made a brilliant save with his blocker.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Tugnutt_Save_1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Tugnutt_Save_2.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
The Senators kept pressing on for another goal and as the minutes went by, the Flyers became more nervous. But luckily, they had a calm Ron Hextall in net.<br />
He sure frustrated the Senators by making another great save after the other. And he was the reason why the Flyers could hold out for the rest of the period and win this game 4-2, and clinching a spot in the Eastern Conference Finals.<br /></td>

<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">After this energy-draining series, The Flyers are going to have a well-earned three-day rest before the first meeting against their next opponent: The New Jersey Devils. Comments:
Well, my biggest fear didn't come true: facing the New York Rangers or the Pittsburgh Penguins. But now I got to face a strong, defensive team in the New Jersey Devils. To be honest, I don't feel so good about this series.
I only won one game against them in the regular season and Martin Brodeur was like a ghost to me in the other games. It will surely be my biggest fight yet and I have to play really good to win this one.

To my biggest surprise, the Canucks took the series against the Detroit Red Wings and that spoiled my hopes of meeting them in the Finals (If I ever make it there). They will face the Colorado Avalanche who has just as me only two losses in the playoffs so far. My hopes is that the Canucks upset the Avalanche but the outlook doesn't look good. We'll see in a couple of days.

<td width="342" height="23" align="center" valign="top">Ron Hextall bumped into some tougher resistance in the Semi-finals but was still the best player on the team in the series, especially in the last game when he by himself stopped the Senators from getting a game seven. He has played every minute and every second so far and if he keeps playing like this, he will continue to do so for the remainder of the playoffs.</td>
<td width="342" align="center" valign="top"><p>The nemesis of the Flyers in the regular season, Martin Brodeur is without a doubt one of the candidates for the Vezina Trophy this season. He has been sharp so far, sporting a 2.06 GAA, only second to Ron Hextall. He had his ups and downs in the Semi-Final against the Rangers but stepped up when he needed to in game seven and was one of the reasons the Devils advanced. <br />
</p></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="23" colspan="2" align="center" valign="top"><strong>Defense</strong></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="23" align="center" valign="top">Neither of the Flyers defenseman has yet to found the net in the post-season. But who cares? <br />
Out of the four team that are left, they are the team that has allowed the fewest goals and that only is an accomplishment. And with the upcoming battle against the defensive-minded Devils, it will not matter if they win or lose the series. They will probably be first in the category anyways. Out of the defensemen, the one who stands out so far is Kjell Samuelsson. Not only does he lead the defensemen in points (4), he also has the best plus/minus (7) and most hits (14). But the rest of the bunch hasn't been bad either. All of the defensemen has at least one plus in the plus/minus column and all but one has at least a points. You won't see a lot of points from them this series either but count on a tight and rugged defense.</td>
<td height="23" align="center" valign="top">Has without a doubt one of the best defensive pairs in the league in Scott Stevens and Scott Niedermayer. While Stevens provides with the defensive side Niedermayer can produce points just as good as he defends. Shawn Chambers and Ken Daneyko are a rugged, sturdy second-line pair and provides a lot of grit.<br />
The third pair with Jason Smith and Lyle Odelein has been successful as well but Odelein injured his ear in the last game against the Rangers and will be out for the remainder of the playoffs. To replace him the Devils have recalled Kevin Dean, who hasn't seen any action this post-season and played just nineteen games with the Devils in the regular season. But still, the Devils defense feels stable and will probably not give the Flyers offense many chances to get to the net.<br /></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="23" colspan="2" align="center" valign="top"><strong>Offense</strong></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="23" align="center" valign="top">Trent Klatt still leads the Flyers scoring with ten points but only got three of them in the series against the Ottawa Senators. But they have gotten offense from several other ways, perhaps most important from John LeClair, who had five goals and has a total of eight. Rod Brind'Amour and Dale Hawerchuk also contributed with a fair share of goals and are looking to improve their stats a bit. Eric Lindros struggled offensively, chipping only in a goal and an assist but provided with some grit and really stepped up as a leading and took some fights to fire up the team, being successful most of the times.<br />
But enforcer Dan Kordic is looking to return to the line-up very soon and will more than likely take over the fighting part from Lindros. Kordic will be an important piece for sure. Not only for his fighting skills but for his great defensive job as well. <br /></td>
<td height="23" align="center" valign="top">If you must say that some part of the Devils are weak you gotta go with the offense. They lost leading scorer John MacLean to an eye injury in game 7 against the Rangers but still has a good core that can produce. Dave Andreychuk, Bobby Holik and Bill Guerin forms a formidable first-line who all have nine points respectively. Brian Rolston stepped in for injured Randy McKay in game six between Patrik Elias and Steve Thomas and the chemistry was perfect. Rolston scored three points, Thomas got his first goal and Elias had two assists which lands them on a positive stride. Their third and fourth line are a little weaker but has valuble experience in Neal Broten and Bobby Carpenter in mix with some youngsters. The pressure will be on the first two lines to produce of course and if they are shut down then the Devils will have a hard time to score.</td>

<td width="525" rowspan="4" align="center" valign="top"><p>The biggest subject before this game was the battle between Ron Hextall and Martin Brodeur. Both goalies have had a strong regular season in the net and has been equally as good in the post-season. Both was in the spotlight in tonight's game and made sure it would be a low-scoring game. But only one would take home the win. And the first round went to<br />
Ron Hextall.<br />
<br />
Hextall stopped 29 shots, including 17 in the second period, and Rod Brind'Amor had the game-winning goal as the Flyers took the important first win in the Eastern Conference Finals against the New Jersey Devils. <br />

<td height="21" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><strong>First Period</strong></td>

<tr>
<td height="797" colspan="3" align="center">The Flyers took the command from the start and dictated the play most of the period. They managed to shut down the Devils offense by pushing them into the corners when inside their zone. They had a bit easier time coming into the Devils zone but Martin Brodeur made some early saves to keep the puck out and it seemed like it would be a hard time finding a hole behind him. But strangely enough, he was beaten pretty early. Just ten seconds before the ten minute mark, Trent Klatt fired a shot through the traffic and past a screened Brodeur's 5-hole and into the net, and Flyers got that important first goal of the contest. <br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Klatt_1_0-5.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br /> <br />
Thirteen minutes in, Krzysztof Oliwa got a minor for holding and sent the Flyers to the powerplay. But here, the Flyers had some difficulties with finding the rhythm in their passing-game and only got a handful of easy shots on goal that Brodeur didn't have any problems to stop.<br />
But the Flyers still had the upper hand throughout the period and at the first intermission owned a one-goal lead and won the shots 11-6. <br /></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="21" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><strong>Second Period</strong></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">But instead of going with the same gameplan, the Flyers went out more defensively in the second and basically invited the Devils into the game. And the Devils of course wasn't late to respond to this. The game shifted completely and forced the Flyers to retreat. The first line with Bobby Holik, Bill Guerin and Dave Andreychuk created a lot of chances for the Devils but Steve Thomas in the second-line also brought his share. Throughout the game, Thomas fired eight shots on goal, six of them in the second period. And one of those shots resulted in a goal. When Dan Lacroix sat out two minutes for holding sixteen minutes in, Thomas scored off his own rebound with just ten seconds left of the penalty and made 1-1, which seemed pretty fair att this point. <br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Thomas_1_1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
And not even twenty seconds later Dan Lacroix was handed another minor, this time for hooking. But the Flyers shorthanded units played exact the opposite what the rest of the team had done earlier in the period by going out very offensively. And the tactic payed off. They turned down all but one attempt to fire the puck on net an kept them out of the Flyers zone most of the time. The puck that got through landed in Hextall's glove and he quickly fired it out of the zone. Eric Desjardins went for the puck as it was sliding towards Brodeur. With traffic behind him, he managed to get away a shot that Brodeur left a rebound on. Desjardins took the puck, went around the net and passed it to Rod Brind'Amour. He fired a shot on point-blank but Brodeur made an amazing save but left a rebound and Brind'Amour could chip in the 2-1 goal for the Flyers with just forty-eight seconds left of the period. <br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/BrindAmour_2_1-4.jpg" width="800" height="640" /> <br />
This was an important and most of all psychological goal that the Flyers got. This meant that they could go out in the third and defend their lead, a difficult task considering the one-goal margin, but it is a better situation than having to push for the lead. The question was how the last period would end as the Devils dominated the Flyers most of the time and they also won the shots 17-7 but could only get one past Ron Hextall, who had been great so far in the net.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><p><strong>Third Period</strong><br />
</p></td>
</tr>

<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">It was a far more even contest in the third. The Flyers played way more disciplined now and held their team together well.<br />
The Devils two scoring-lines bumped into some heavy surveillance by the Flyers, especially their two checking-lines who were doing their part of the game well. In overall, the Devils couldn't match the Flyers physical play this evening and had to see game one slip away. <br />
Martin Brodeur played very well in the period, stopping eleven shots, but was pulled from the game with twenty-one seconds left and just seconds later Eric Desjardins fired a puck out of his own zone that first deflected of the glass and right towards the Devils net, and barely crossed the line to make it 3-1, the final score of the game.<br /></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><strong>Post-game</strong></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">The Flyers tactic of shutting down the Devils two offensive lines worked, at least for two periods. This proved that they are vunerable on the defensive and can the Flyers continue to shut them down like that, then this series will be over in four straight games. But they also need to keep getting the puck past Martin Brodeur, who played great this game and showed that he will do his best to keep this series a low-scoring one. But his counterpart Ron Hextall played even better and will probably continue to frustrate the Devils offense.</td>

<tr valign="top">
<td height="66" colspan="3" align="center">A part from a breakaway by Bill Guerin with five minutes left, the period was pretty eventless. None of the teams could get their game sorted out and it resulted in a lot of bad passes and sloppy plays. The Flyers was however the better team and had some dangerous shots on goal. The Devils only amassed three shots on goal during the whole period and looked very weak. But that was about to change in the next period.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="21" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><strong>Second Period</strong></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center"><p>The Flyers started out the best with Mikael Renberg having two great chances just two minutes in when he took his own rebound and was so close to get it past Martin Brodeur but the goaltender kicked it away. Eric Lindros got a minor for holding at 04:21 and the Devils were putting hard pressure on net immediately and the Flyers couldn't get the puck out of the zone. Bill Guerin got to the puck in the right corner and fed it towards the goal were Bobby Holik could tip-in the first goal of the contest.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Holik_0_1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
And five minutes later the situation was reversed as Bobby Holik got past Dainius Zubrus on right side in the Flyers zone and got the puck to Bill Guerin, who could slap in a one-timer past Hextall, not to the later one's amusement.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Guerin_0_2.jpg" width="800" height="640" /> <br />
Having been scored upon twice in a span of five minutes in identical situations, the Flyers needed to regain the focus on the defensive side. Both goals came way to easy and the Flyers virtually gave the momentum away. <br />
</p></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><p><strong>Third Period</strong><br />
</p></td>
</tr>

<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">The Flyers came out the strongest in the last period, trying hard to beat Martin Brodeur. Both scoring lines created some good chances and should have scored on at least a few of them. But you can't forget Brodeur, who did his fair share of great saves. And he turned into a ghost when Jason Smith got a minor for roughing at 09:50. The Flyers had four shots on goal and all of them should have been a goal but Brodeur somehow kept it out. And as Mikael Renberg got a minor for obstruction hooking when stopping Bobby Holik from getting a breakaway, the powerplay soon shifted over to the Devils. And there the Devils definately could kill this game as Bill Guerin served Dave Andreychuk with a pass from the exact spot as on the 1-0 and Andreychuk lifted it in past a sliding Hextall and the defense just went static. <br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Andreychuk_0_3.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
And the Flyers kinda knew that they were beaten after the goal but was going for a goal anyways, mostly for their own confidence. <br />
But they were looking to go out from this game empty-handed as Brodeur made things hard for them. But at 19:48, Shawn Chambers got a minor for roughing and just seven seconds later Trent Klatt fed a puck to Eric Lindros who one-timed the puck past Brodeur, who saw his shoutout slip away. But he probably didn't mind as he and the Devils walked away with a 3-1 victory over the Flyers.<br /></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><strong>Post-game</strong></td>
</tr>
<tr valign="top">
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">Being scored at on three identical situations is not okay. The Devils tactic of one-timer on short-range worked and the Flyers defense<br />
wasn't as agressive as they should have been in front of their own crease. You could really understand Ron Hextall's frustration when<br />
his defense let him do all the work. But be sure that coach Terry Murray won't let those mistake to be forgotten soon. <br />
He will let his players hear it during the next practice, that's for sure.</td>

<tr valign="top">
<td height="66" colspan="3" align="center">The first game at the Continental Airlines Arena in the Semi-Finals was not a crowd pleaser. Both teams opened up very defensively and it felt like the puck just went back and forth between the teams. And naturally, only a few real scoring chances were created. Ron Hextall stopped seven shots and Martin Brodeur stopped six shots and had no problems keeping the score at zero. Obviously, both wasn't satisfied with this period as this type of defensive play was killing the game and both had to play more aggressive in the next period if they were to gain any momentum.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="21" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><strong>Second Period</strong></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center"><p>But the status quo continued. It wasn't until Dave Andreychuk got a breakaway eight minutes in and nearly scored as the pace went to a higher level. <br />
And at 11:41 the first penalty of the game came as Shawn Chambers stopped Dale Hawerchuk from getting a breakaway with a hooking. <br />
And the Devils made their best of keeping the Flyers away from their zone and did a good job disturbing their play. But after an offside-call a face-off took place outside the Devils zone to the right. Rod Brind'Amour won the face-off and Janne Niinimaa quickly took care of the puck and advanced into the zone.
Having some traffic in front of him, he stopped to find someone to pass and finally saw Mikael Renberg at the right post and with a quick pass and a one-timer the score was 1-0.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Renberg_1_0_1-1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />

<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Renberg_1_0_2-2.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
The Devils first-line had a chance right after the following face-off as Bill Guerin found Bobby Holik with a pass in front of the net but Hextall made an easy save with his pads. The teams each had a handful of chances in the following minutes and a goal seemed to be the next natural thing. But both teams also possesses the best two goaltenders in the league and Hextall and Brodeur didn't want to let anything past them that easy. But they also had a lot of help from their defense. Especially the Flyers defense played well and shut down the Devils two scoring lines as effectively as in Game one. But offensively, it didn't work as well. They had a chance of getting a two-goal lead just before the second intermission as Shawn Chambers took his second penalty of the game at 18:27 but their powerplay faltered and made the job easy for the Devils shorthanded units and the score was still 1-0 when the period ended.

<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><p><strong>Third Period</strong><br />
</p></td>
</tr>

<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">You might that the Devils would come out hard offensively to tie the game up and go for the winning goal. But the energy just wasn't there tonight. Although killing a penalty nine minutes in after Krzysztof Oliwa had spent two minutes in the penalty box for roughing, the Devils lost a lot of momentum and the Flyers could dictate the game and gave the hometeam little time with the puck. The Flyers were much better offensively in this period but Martin Brodeur really gave his team a chance to tie it up by making those important stops when he needed to. But that wasn't enough. The Flyers could prevent the puck from getting into the hands of the Devils in those dangerous areas in their own zone. The Devils tried their best in the last minute with Brodeur pulled but failed to score and the Flyers regained the lead in the series with a score of 1-0.</td>

<tr valign="top">
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">Ron Hextall is already one of the candidates for the Vezina Trophy but if he keeps playing like this, he will take the Flyers to their first Stanley Cup in ten years<br />
where the same Hextall won the Conn Smythe Trophy. He gets a lot of help from his teammates of course but most of the honour has to go to him. With these<br />
low-scoring game every goal allowed could be devastating. And that knowledge for a goalie can either be terrifying or, in Hextall's case, exicting. He loves these tight games and you can see it through his mask at his eyes how focused he is. </td>

<tr valign="top">
<td height="66" colspan="3" align="center">The Devils took the command from the start, with both of their scoring-lines creating chances at the start. The Flyers were forced to play defensively.<br />
Offensively, the Flyers didn't get a shot on goal until seven minutes in when Eric Lindros found an opening in the Devils net. Brodeur left a dangerous rebound <br />
and Klatt was there to tip it in but the netminder made a sprawling save to keep it out. But this little chance got the Flyers going for the while and the momentum <br />
started to shift. And when Bobby Holik got a minor for hooking at 10:31, the Flyers could score the first goal of the game about forty-five seconds later.<br />
They started with getting some good pressure on net, a rarity in this series and had some good shots on goal. Eventually Brodeur got to the puck and tried to fire it out of the zone but it hit Jason Smith instead and Rod Brind'Amour took the puck, fired a shot and got the rebound past the goaltender to make it 1-0.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/BrindAmour_1_0-4.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
But a rare mistake by Ron Hextall about five minutes later blew the Flyers lead. Neal Broten got a shot on goal that Hextall easily saved.<br />
But when he put the puck into to play he shot it right on Broten, who with some difficulties got away a shot that went over a sliding Hextall.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Broten_1_1_1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Broten_1_1_2.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
This was a disappointing goal for sure as the Flyers were hoping to go into the first intermission with one-goal lead. But now they had to chase it again and with the rare chances they've gotten so far things looked to become tough in the next period.<br /></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="21" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><strong>Second Period</strong></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center"><p>And it became a real struggle. Both teams made an exceptional job on the defensive and scoring chances didn't come often. Naturally, the shots were few but the game was still exciting though. Both team went more to the physical side and both teams landed some nice bodychecks. At 11:43, the first fight of the series broke out. Dan Kordic, who had been out eight weeks with a sprained ankle, bumped into Reid Simpson and after a short conversation both dropped their gloves. The fight was even, Dan Kordic looked rusty out there but landed some punches and could stand on his feet until the referees stepped in and separated the combatants. The period was coming to an end when Reid Simpson took a minor for hooking and left the Flyers with a powerplay. But they lost the face-off and the Devils could play it out. <br />
Denis Pederson fired a shot from the neutral zone and into the Flyers zone. It bounced of the glass and right back to Pederson, who fired a quick shot from a seemingly impossible angle and right over Hextall's glove and into the net, making it 2-1 just before the break.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Pederson_1_2.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
This was another late-period blow for the Flyers, but perhaps even worse than in the first period, because now they had to tie the game up, a task that would become difficult. Very difficult.
<br />
</p></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><p><strong>Third Period</strong><br />
</p></td>
</tr>

<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">When going into the last period, the Devils completely dismantled the Flyers offense. They weren't allowed any near the Devils net and at the same time got a lot of time in the Flyers zone, going for the game clincher. Hextall was very busy in this period, having to stop thirteen shots. His counterpart, Martin Brodeur, wasn't busy at all. The Flyers only got five shots on goal and none of them was even worth calling a scoring chance. And if they would have scored on one of those shots, it wouldn't be fair at all. Therefore, when the horn sounded for the end of the game, the Devils had taken a well-deserved 2-1 victory over the Flyers.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><strong>Post-game</strong></td>
</tr>
<tr valign="top">
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">To describe the game in four words: This just won't do! The Flyers must get more aggressive than this if they want to score. When facing one of the best goaltender's and defense in the league you can't play fancy but only rugged, physical and hard-hitting hockey will do if they want to win this series. Nothing else will work. <br />
Their defense is just too well-organized to get by on skill. They have to show determination, passion and energy and nothing of that existed today.<br />
Coach Terry Murray has to find another way for the players to get back in that way of thinking or else this series is lost.</td>

<tr valign="top">
<td height="66" colspan="3" align="center">The first period was a fairly uneven contest. The Flyers had most of the momentum after a powerplay on Kevin Dean four minutes in, although they did not score on the opportunity. But the pressure were on the Devils, who had to see Martin Brodeur make some good saves early. Eight minutes in, the Flyers had the puck in the Devils zone. Chris Therien got the puck from Daniel Lacroix, who skated around looking for someone to pass. That was very hard as the Devils did a good job of blocking the way. But eventually he found Kevin Haller who fired a one-timer that surprisingly went past Brodeur's glove.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Haller_1_0_1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Haller_1_0_2.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
But a quick look on the replay showed that Brodeur was partially screened which explained the relative soft goal. <br />
About three minutes later Bill Guerin had to sit two minutes for hooking, giving the Flyers a chance to go up by two early.<br />
But as always in this series, Martin Brodeur stood tall and never gave them a shot of another goal. <br />
With twenty-six seconds left of the period, Joel Otto went out to serve two minutes for interference after checking <br />
Jason Smith a little bit too later after he had played the puck. This would give the Devils a nice start to the second period as<br />
they were mostly outplayed in the first, losing the shots 12-4.<br /></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="21" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><strong>Second Period</strong></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center"><p>And it gave them a well-needed push. The Devils completely dominated the Flyers and were all over Hextall, who really had to fight to keep the puck out of the zone.<br />
On a one-minute powerplay for the Devils ten minutes in, they fired five shots alone on the goaltender. The Flyers fired only five shots on goal but one of them was close to go in. Dainius Zubrus managed to fire a puck through the heavy traffic in front of the net and bounced off Martin Brodeur and hit the post and was going in but a defenseman managed to get it out just in time. At 16:44, Eric Lindros got a minor for roughing and gave the Devils a chance to tie it up. <br />
The Devils powerplay units had their chances but just couldn't solve Hextall. He alone killed the penalty and also made sure that the Flyers could go into the dressing room for the final period with a one-goal lead. But as the Devils had fired twenty shots throughout the period you'd wonder if he would have some strength left.</p></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><p><strong>Third Period</strong><br />
</p></td>
</tr>

<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">But the contest was far more even in the third thankfully. The Flyers played a lot better at both ends and was the better team from time to time.<br />
And they were close to score just four minutes in as Rod Brind'Amour fired a hard slapshot that hit the post and went out to Janne Niinimaa.<br />
Niinimaa had a completely open net but Brodeur came out of nowhere and denied a goal with an amazing pad save. <br />
That was without a doubt The save of the series so far.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Brodeur_Save.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
Hextall didn't make anything that spectacular during the period but still made those important saves when he needed to. He and Brodeur made sure that<br />
no more goals were scored. The Devils tried to get one past Hextall in the last minute by pulling Brodeur but it only resulted in Mikael Renberg putting a puck into the open net and sealing the important game five victory. <br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Renberg_2_0.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br /></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><strong>Post-game</strong></td>
</tr>
<tr valign="top">
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">Although getting the win, things still does not feel comfortable. The offense is still struggling and this was the third consecutive game they only amassed one goal.<br />
This would have been more discomforting if it wasn't for Ron Hextall. He cannot be praised enough for his effort this series so far and is the difference between going to the Stanley Cup Finals and heading to the golf course early. But let's not forget his defense. Although allowing thirty-three shots on net, they were there for many of the rebounds. The second pair of Petr Svoboda and Kjell Samuelsson were the standouts and had twenty-six and twenty-four minutes of icetime respectively and made the most out of it, providing a stable defense throughout the game. </td>

<tr valign="top">
<td height="17" colspan="3" align="center">The Flyers got up early in the lead as they converted on a powerplay created by Scott Stevens. At 02:08, Trent Klatt got a puck in front of the net after a shot by Petr Svoboda hit Denis Pederson and fired it away and deflected of Eric Lindros's body and into the net, making it 1-0 after just 02:04. <br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Lindros_1_0-2.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
The Devils tied it up about eight minutes later after a great individual performance by Petr Sykora. Sykora got the puck from Reid Simpson just before the Flyers blueline and and deked past several players before finishing off with a quicker that beat Hextall on his gloveside. <br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Sykora_1_1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
That was pretty much the action of the period as the rest of it went on pretty eventless. The shots were 8-6 to the Devils but the Flyers felt a little more edgy and<br />
had the momentum when the first intermission came. <br /></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="21" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#0099ff"><strong>Second Period</strong></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center"><p>The Devils response? To play dirty. Hooks, slashes, rough checks were synonymous with their play and the referee didn't call anything. The Flyers were allowed to some retaliation but a simple hooking by Petr Svoboda at 04:28 was not allowed and sent the Flyers on the penalty kill. Luckily for them, the Devils powerplay didn't create anything near a dangerous scoring chance and the game was still tied. But as the Devils dirty play continued, the Flyers had huge difficulties getting close their net and amassed only three shots on net during the whole period. The Devils fired seven and one of them got them into the lead at 10:17 when Denis Pederson advanced into the Flyers zone to the right and fired a slapshot from a narrow angle and Hextall looked to have his first post covered but it went in somehow.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Pederson_2_1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
Unfair it might seem, but the Flyers had allowed the Devils to dictate the play and was in fact outchecked most of the period. It wasn't the Flyers that people are used to see and they had to found a way to get back to that play if they were going to win this game. But getting a penalty on Trent Klatt just as the horn sounded for the second intermission

<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">But the Flyers killed the penalty and went on the prowl for a goal. And after a lot of hard work and grit it finally payed off. <br />
Almost eight minutes in, Mikael Renberg went into the Devils zone from the right and found Dale Hawerchuk in front of the net. Hawerchuk fired a one-timer that first hit the post but re-directed on one of Brodeur's legs and into the net. <br />
<br />

<br />
The game became more intense after this and both teams turned on the offensive. It was the Devils who were getting the shots on<br />
net while the Flyers still struggled with this. But this didn't keep them from scoring. About fourteen minutes in, when the rest of the Flyers were making a line-shift, Rod Brind'Amour skated into the Devils zone all alone, bumping into some heavy traffic. From the bench came Eric Lindros flying into the zone and Brind'Amour<br />
caught a glimpse of in just in time to hand it over to him for a one-timer and Lindros slammed that puck up in the left corner behind Brodeur.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Lindros_3_2_1-1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Lindros_3_2_2.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
With just six minutes left, the Devils were desperate to get a goal in because right now they were out of the playoffs. But the Flyers defended themselves well and<br />
as the game rolled into the final minute, the Devils pulled Brodeur for an extra attacker and with some unexpected help they got the goal they wanted to bad.<br />
After a shot by the Devils landed into the right corner, Eric Lindros picked it up. But instead of trying to lift the puck out of the zone he tried to play it and Bill Guerin took the puck and made a quick pass to Bobby Holik, who fired a backhand that Ron Hextall didn't have any time to react on.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Holik_3_3.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
With twenty-three seconds left, the score was tied a three when Bill Guerin won the following face-off out to Scott Niedermayer. <br />
Niedermayer went into the zone and fired a shot on goal and with some screening by both Dave Andreychuk and a Flyers defenseman<br />
Ron Hextall never saw the puck coming and the goal went in.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Niedermayer_3_4.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
Oddly enough, coach Terry Murray didn't pull Hextall after this but went with five players and the Devils could easily defend their crease for the remainding eighteen seconds to win the game and take this series to a game 7, winning 4-3.<br /></td>

<tr valign="top">
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">&quot;What happened?&quot; was the most common question among the reporters in the dressing room after the game. Out of all the explanations that came out one player said: &quot;Hockey! That's what happened&quot;. He was right. This is how the cruel game of hockey plays out sometimes. The Flyers weren't bad at all in this game a part from the second period struggle but that was far from game-deciding. They stuck with their gameplan and played it good. The only thing that stopped them was a bad pass and some bad luck. Perhaps a bit bummed out about losing the game in the final thirty seconds, they should take all the positive sides with them instead. For example, beating Martin Brodeur. Brodeur wasn't sharp in goal at all tonight, yielding three goals on just seventeen shots. Hopefully, this game will stick in his head and be one part that settles the game tomorrow. But the Flyers can't just hope for another bad game from Brodeur, they have to do most of the work themselves. They have to regroup and really load up before the next game. Because losing that one will mean no more games, but only vacation. </td>

<td height="17" colspan="3" align="center">The nerves where outside the players skin in this one and you could see it from the beginning. Both teams played very cautiously and didn't want to make<br />
an early mistake that would lead to a goal. Therefore, the first period was very defensively played and didn't contain any action what so ever. Even when Daniel Lacroix got two minutes for hooking at 05:56 nothing perticular happened and the game was still scoreless after twenty minutes played. The Flyers won the shots 7-4 but didn't have any momentum to bring to the next period. <br /></td>

<tr>
<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center"><p>Karl Dykhuis got penalized early for interference and the Devils got their second chance of the night to score on the powerplay. But as in the previous powerplay, they did not create anything. The pace was much the same as in the first until the clock hit the ten-minute mark. Seventeen seconds in, Eric Lindros got a minor for tripping and sent the Devils to their third powerplay of the night. And here the Devils could score as Patrik Elias took care of a rebound from Ken Daneyko's shot, leaving the Flyers defensemen and goaltender Ron Hextall with no chance to get to it. <br />
<br />
<img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Elias_1_0.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br />
<br />
This certainly speeded up the game a bit and two penalties in a span of twenty-six seconds were found, a hooking on Dan Kordic at 11:33 and another hooking on Dave Andreychuk at 11:59. The Flyers were trying to get their offense going but struggled to get to net as usual in this series. At 18:35, Dan Kordic tried to fire up his team by taking on Reid Simpson. But he didn't get the best out of the fight and of course didn't get the desired effect. The Devils could go to the dressing room with a 1-0 lead before the final period.

<td height="18" colspan="3" align="center">When facing the possibility of elimination you might think that a team would go all-in to try to get the lead. But the Flyers basically choked. <br />
They got nothing out of their play and even changing tactics didn't work. They had burned all the juice that was left in them and although they really tried<br />
they ended up nowhere. Only five shots were produced in the period and all of them was no match for Martin Brodeur. And they were also outmatched<br />
by the Devils overall. When trying to get a chance to pull Ron Hextall for an extra attacker they didn't even get out of their own zone. Helplessly they could only watch as the game was slipping away as the seconds were ticking away to the end of the game and the end of the season for the Philadelphia Flyers.</td>

So why did they lose? to put it simple: they just weren't good enough. And you shouldn't point out a specific player as it is a team sport and the team effort is all that counts. And it just wasn't there tonight. They certained gave it their best shot but it wasn't enough. And that knowledge also might be a thorn in the side. But the Flyers should still be proud. They won the Presidents Trophy as the team with the best regular season record and goaltender duo Ron Hextall/Garth Snow also laid their hands on the William Grant Jennings Trophy for allowing the fewest goals in the league, and of course some credit goes to their defense in front of them for that achievement. So what awaits now except vacation? For some players, summer training awaits to prepare themselves to fight for a place on the roster next season. Some players will not be asked to re-join the team and has to seek themselves elsewhere and for some this was perhaps the last chance for them to win the Stanley Cup ever. But whatever their destination is after this they can be proud that they represented the Philadelphia Flyers with honour during the 1996-1997 NHL season.</td>

1997 Stanley Cup Playoffs Statistics

Comments:
If you wonder how the Canucks won the cup then the top three players
are your answers. Bure, Mogilny and Linden combined for 73 points
in 23 games and that nothing but a great number. Scott Niedermayer
was the reason along with Martin Brodeur that the Devils reached the
Finals and for a defenseman, 21 points in 23 is more than great.
Impressive is Mark Messier´s 17 points in just 13 games but a -2 in his
column is it. The Rangers insufficient defense continued in the playoffs
and was the reason for them heading out so early.
My only contribution to these stats was Trent Klatt, the only forward
who I think made a great playoff in my team.

Comments:
Kirk McLean's goaltending in the playoffs wasn't stellar, but good enough
to give them the Cup. But the best goalies in the playoffs IMO was the Semi-Final combatants Martin Brodeur and Ron Hextall. They were the reason both their teams were held to few goals and also the reason why they got so far into the playoffs in the first place. But when looking solely on statistics, Hextall was without any competition the best.
His save percentage was 3,1% higher than 2nd placed Brodeur and his goal against average was 0.336 lower than the same Brodeur.
It's no wonder Hextall won both the Vezina and the Hart Trophy this season. Although losing in the first round and sporting the highest goals against average among all starting goaltenders (2.833), Patrick Lalime made a great first appearance in the playoffs. His 89.0% save percentage was good for a 5th place and along with his great regular season, his Calder Trophy was well-earned.

Flyers 1997 playoff statistics

Comments:
Offensively, I was much disappointed with the Flyers. Both scoring
lines choked when they were supposed to produce.
But I wasn't that surprised since that had been the melody all season.
Trent Klatt was the biggest surprise with his 13 points, John LeClair and
Rod Brind'Amour was okay but nothing more. Eric Lindros had 11 points but took some stupid penalties on and off and did gave away that puck to Bobby Holik that tied the game in Game 6. But the 3rd and the 4th line was good through the whole playoffs and also produced a couple of points, which was more than expected. Defensively, there is nothing to say really except that every pair did an excellent job. Although not producing that much, they stepped up for Hextall whenever he was in trouble and should not feel ashamed about their effort in this Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Final thought and analysis

And now it's finally time to wrap this season up with some thoughts
about the season and the Flyermania Modded NHL 2004.
To begin with, I have had a blast from the time I started this thread
from the start until the final, heartbreaking loss against the Devils
in Game 7. This was the first time I really found an NHL-game challenging and most of all even. Before this, I've been playing on lower-levels before just because I've thought the higher level was too big of a step to take and it was just not fun to play. But in this version of NHL 2004, you really get thrown back and forth from playing good and playing bad and I think no game has caused so much frustration
as this one. But still I haven't cheated my way out of a slump, it simply
was too fun and also challenged me in a way that I haven't been challenged on before. I really got into the game and spent a lot of
time (after some tips from Trent) trying to figure out the best lines for the team and changing my tactic in order to win again.

In overall, I think my 1996-1997 season with the Flyers was very successful. Picking on of the best teams in that season might
have made the trip a little easier but playing on that difficulty
level with +1 CPU advantage proved to be a tough task and at
first I didn't think I would make it all the way to the playoffs.
But as the season progressed I sorted out most of the problems
and surprisingly won the Presidents Trophy in the end.
That i'm quite satisfied with.

During the season I struggled with my offense on and off.
The "Legion of Doom" was a great failure and was split up
after about 25 games into the season. Although I finished
first in goals scored, it was when I most needed the goals
that they didn't came. most of the times, whenever an important
game was played, those who were supposed to score didn't
and I found this very irritating and very realistic. It added a lot
of realism that the star players sometimes didn't produce in
critical games.

But something that I dissatisfied with was the special teams. I kinda knew right from the start that I was going to be at the top of the list on the powerplay and at the opposite end on the penalty kill. This is nothing new with the NHL-series, I've experienced it before in
earlier titles as well and although it's a minor flaw, it's still a bit
annoying that they haven't found the right balance yet.
Goalie statistics is also a flaw that has existed in the game
since the NHL 2002 title and I cannot understand why they
haven't fixed this yet. Too bad it's too hard-coded to be
altered in this game.

But those few things are easy to forget when there's so many
great things about this game. And I think there was no better
way to get to know it than by playing Jimboni's 1996-1997 Mod,
which has taken me back thirteen years back in time. For me
who followed NHL back then as a little kid it was a thrill to face
all the biggest stars of that era, in the right arenas with all
the uniforms, equipment, everything. I will most certainly play
another season with this mod.

At last, I'd like to thank all of you who have read my thread throughout the season and been patient with my sometimes inconsistent reporting.
It's been great to see all the positive comments about my season and
my reporting in all and this truly inspired me to improve it more and
more as it progressed. Two big final thanks goes out to Trent and Nashfan who's 96-97 Blues and Whalers season threads were the reason I started this thread in the first place. If you haven't seen them yet, check them out! They are really worth reading.

I have a new season thread in mind by it's a couple of weeks ahead as I have a lot of other stuff to do IRL. But until then, see you!
