The NHL Entry Draft is (I guess) 5 pm EST 24th of June in Minneapolis. Who will be the first pick, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins or Adam Larsson? Will there be any surprises? |

I'm a firm believer that you don't pick the dman first unless your team is absolutely loaded on offense and has really poor or average defense (NJ for example if they had the first pick might wanna pick Larsson). A number one dman does play more minutes but who knows if Larsson will become that. I think RNH on the other hand though will be a first line centre, probably second liner at worst. I've seen RNH play slightly less than Larsson but I've been impressed by everything with RNH. Also, it is all about Taylor Hall and RNH will probably help Hall more than Larsson. With that said, I'm an Avs fan and with the number two pick, I'd take RNH if Oilers didn't even though he's a centre and Colorado needs wingers more. I'd actually even take Huberdeau over Larsson if I had the Avs pick. Maybe Landeskog. I'm pretty interested by which team takes that 6'7 kid James Oleksiak who's expected to go in the 11-20th spot. And there's always a tonne of sleeper picks especially this year with Russians and a couple Danes. Khokhlachev from the Spitfires might fall as low as 40th. There are some players like Stuart Percy from my local OHL team who are gonna go 2nd round and in another year, these guys could be late first rounders and the 2nd-3rd round of this draft is gonna have some gems. This is a 23 min mock draft show by TSN (nothing special since there are a tonne of mock drafts and most of them just go for shock value). I dunno if it's available to view outside of Canada but here you go. Pierre McGuire with the first pick goes with Larsson. http://watch.tsn.ca/featured/#clip487587 |

Working all day through the draft this year  , but of course I am curious to see what we do with the #1 again. I would be happy with any of those top few guys although as you said Nettles, I think RNH would mesh well with Hall, and taking a d-man at #1 is not the best plan. If they do take RNH, Oleksiak would be an option for EDM at #19, but I'm not sure I want another project defenceman. Alex Plante has really struggled while there were still a few good names on the board that they could have taken instead. I think he's more of a high risk/high reward player, similar to Plante was, and I would be looking elsewhere if I was the Oilers. They've had too many busts in the past 15 years, so they need to be more prudent with their drafting, and it has improved with MacGregor at the helm of scouting |

Holy <expletive> - Philadelphia just traded Richards AND Carter. I'd hate to be any prospect of Philly. They simply don't care about their star players. |

What is happening? They've signed Bryzgalov for 9 years at a $5.67 M cap hit I think...do NHL GM's learn nothing? And I know there were questions about Jeff Carter but they traded him for an even more inconsistent young player who doesn't have the same upside but at least they got a pick. Why they traded Mike Richards though is beyond me. But they get back Brayden Schenn which I think is hilarious because Brayden Schenn is the top prospect drafted by an NHL team not playing in the NHL last year and he keeps getting compared to Mike Richards from before. I don't personally agree with this and I think LA made a mistake because Schenn had a $2 M cheaper cap hit for the next three years, Simmonds was an important winger, and their scouts have done well and would've gotten someone good in this draft with those picks. They're also a rebuilding team so Schenn's contract would've been more useful. These are the type of trades you see on websites as proposals but you know that they'll never actually happen, unless your GM is as bold as Holmgren. In fairness to him though, the team's chairman I think forced them to sign Bryzgalov. I think the Philadelphia squad is all over the place now, some of it is ready to win now especially the defence, the rest is a couple or few years away. |

Thanks. Back to the original topic, I guess this year won't be a year with some "crosby" or "ovechkin" prospect, although there are many great guys out there. The amount of these great players is bigger than the last couple of years. But with drafts, you never know - remember Jeff Skinner was last year the 7th pick.. And now he's won the Calder! Some gain greater success than others. Of course every last years first round picks didn't yet play in the NHL, e.g. my favorite Granlund

RNH is going first overall. Pierre McGuire has no idea what he is talking about. As an Oiler fan, it was pretty clear that our largest hole was at centre, not on defence, as McGuire said. My guess is that the Avs take Huberdeau, Florida takes Landeskog and the Devils take Larson. Avs need a winger and Florida has Gudbranson, so the Devils get a huge coupe with Larson at #4. |

^ The Avs draft philosophy as with a lot of other teams now is to take the best player available with the first to second or third round picks usually. So they do need a winger more than a dman (actually Fleischmann and Mueller were playing great with Duchene before they got injured and Galiardi was doing well with Stastny before he got injured and Stewart got traded, they still have David Jones and Hejduk). The problem is that Adam Larsson's potential is much higher than Landeskog. I'm extremely impressed by Landeskog, he doesn't have the same flair as even Ryan Strome but he's just aggressive, fast to get on the puck and he seems to make more of an impact but if they feel that Larsson really has number one potential then they'll take him I think. People talk about leadership and the Avs but they have Erik Johnson now not to mention Stastny, Duchene, O'Reilly and whatever veterans are brought in and these guys all have a history from junior (or the NHL in Johnson's case). I'd like them to take Landeskog because I know that it'll be exciting to watch him come in and make an immediate impact but the smart thing is to take Larsson I guess. Huberdeau...I did see him beat my local OHL team in the Mem Cup final but I'd take both Landeskog and Larsson over him. Next year is supposed to be a draft loaded with high end dmen so who knows. Also they were talking about teams trading up but I don't see the point of doing it because the guy drafted 10th can be just as good as the guy drafted 30th in this draft, it seems like an exaggeration but who knows. And Dougie Hamilton who's ranked around 7th might end up being better than Larsson who I think is ranked 2nd so it's a guess (I like Hamilton, I saw his team get beat 10-1 in an OHL game and I had a seat in the Niagara end, he was actually pretty good defensively despite the score and he's a big guy. Also, there goes the OEL <--> 1st Columbus pick (Ryan Johansen) NEHL move I was hoping for next season but oh well. |

RNH. As an Oilers fan, I'd be shocked if we let him get by us. You just can't pass up that skill. |

A 2nd round pick? That's it? Damn your bad negotiation skills Colorado management. Toronto gets a high end prospect plus a 1st round pick plus a 2nd round pick for Kaberle who has an expiring contract. Colorado gets a 2nd round pick for a player with a full year left on his contract. That makes sense. |

I'm still kind of blown away that the #2 overall player (and some may argue the best available player in the draft) fell into Jersey's lap. Definitely a reward for not tanking the second half of the season. This would not be possible without John MacLean. I love you Mac! |

Kaberle was a rental player by a team desperate for a cup. Burke has also shown, albeit rarely, that he can pull of a great deal. I would agree though that Liles and Kaberle are very similar players. You happy with Landeskog at least? I'm happy with RNH, and I wanted Klefbom or McNeill with 19 so very pleased there. Also Brule and a pick for Smyth possibly. Great day |

I didn't think that Calgary who were so tight against last season's $59 cap could afford to add Smyth so it makes sense that it is Edmonton. Pretty happy with the Avs going for Landeskog instead of Larsson. Going in I wanted Landeskog but after the Liles trade, I thought maybe they do need a dman there to fill out the top four but Landeskog is more fun to watch which you want as a fan and he might make more of an impact anyways. They got Siemens who looks like he'll be a top four defensive dman for them and Elliot is the real replacement for Liles. I'm pretty excited about Minnesota trading to get Coyle if you know what I mean (NEHL). |
