Game 82: New York Islanders at Columbus

Posted Image

As you can see, there was still plenty of jostling going on in the lower half of the playoff tree going into the final game. It appears my most likely opponent in round 1 will be Nashville, and Chicago, Anaheim, and Detroit are all safe but fighting for the 4-6 spots. It came down to Dallas and Edmonton for the final spot to play the Sharks in round 1.

Posted Image

So it was with mixed emotions that I played my final game at home this season. I am excited for the playoffs, but will miss the grind of the regular season. At 52-24-5 (6-4) I have gotten better results than I ever could have hoped for, thanks to that magical 20 game stretch coming out of the All-Star break. With the #2 playoff slot locked up, I could have used this game as a glorified scrimmage, but I didn’t, because the Islanders sat at 35-31-15 (3-7), which was in 8th place, but only 1 point ahead of the Rangers and Carolina and just 2 points ahead of Tampa Bay. So I treated this game as a playoff warmup and did my best for the integrity of the league to knock the Islanders out. I put my full roster into this one and had Sanford in the net, who would go against the mercurial and unpredictable Nabokov for the Isles. The Islanders came in struggling but needing just a victory to guarantee a playoff spot, so I expected their best effort obviously. With that, it was off to the Nationwide Arena for the season finale.

INJURIES:

ISLANDERS: Wishart, Nielsen, Moulson, Martin, Okposo, Colliton, Gilles out
COLUMBUS: None

GOALIES:

ISLANDERS: Nabokov
COLUMBUS: Sanford

It was clear that the Islanders were a bit over-anxious right out of the gate, as Reasoner took a hooking call less than 90 seconds in:

Posted Image

However the Isles quickly killed off the penalty and it was clear I was in for a spirited battle. Things were pretty quiet for the rest of the first half of the period, as defense dominated the run of play. At 11 minutes I got on the board first on a busted play from horrible goaltending, as Nabokov got the puck and passed it out right to Dorsett, who took his time and deposited it into the open net for a 1-0 lead:

Posted Image

Over the next 5 minutes I had several chances to take a 2-0 lead, but Nabokov made up for his blunder by making 3-4 incredible saves on great chances. At 17 minutes we started a penalty string heading into the break, which resulted in some brief power play time for both teams:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Both teams managed to get to the break without allowing any more goals, and after 1 period it was still anyone’s game at 1-0. Shots were 12-8 Jackets and I was killing them on faceoffs, yet despite dominating the run of play for much of the period I didn’t have much to show for it. It would be important for me to convert that into goals in the second, or else the visitors could seize the momentum and never look back.

Posted Image

The first 5 minutes of the second period were more or less a stalemate, but then the Jacket captain took over, as he has done so many times already this season. At 5 minutes he worked a long shift on the line change, and Brassard ended up finding him with a sweet diagonal pass from behind the net, which he deposited to make it 2-0:

Posted Image

At 7 minutes Strome took a hooking call and I had a golden chance to take real control of the game:

Posted Image

In just 23 seconds, Wisniewski found Nash for his second goal of the game to give me a commanding 3-0 lead:

Posted Image

Just when it looked like the Isles were dead in the water, Nikitin took a penalty just 30 seconds after the goal. I had to laugh at the phantom call, because what you see here is what it shows on replay, which is him doing nothing:

Posted Image

2 minutes later Pahlsson went for tripping, and the Isles had a few seconds of 5-on-3 and another power play:

Posted Image

I killed it off with some good clearances and work in the offensive zone, and at 11 minutes Hamonic took a penalty and I had weathered the storm down a man:

Posted Image

I didn’t score on the power play, but I put some pressure on and then played the rest of the period with the advantage in run of play. After 2 periods I was comfortably ahead 3-0 despite the Islanders outshooting me 12-10 in the second. I was still working them over on faceoffs and was comfortable with the pace of the game. At this stage, it would take a miracle for the Islanders to make the playoffs.

Posted Image

And the miracle was not forthcoming. After turning away an initial Islander barrage to start the third, Carter made perhaps the best individual play of the season, as he took the puck, sped up ice, deked out one defender, then fired a shot while taking a vicious cross-check to beat Nabokov, make the score 4-0, and chase the goaltender from the game:

Posted Image

Certainly after that the Islanders seemed deflated, but to their credit they didn’t quit. Less than a minute later Wisniewski got the game for tripping:

Posted Image

And in just 3 seconds Reasoner fired a cross-ice pass to Comeau off the faceoff, which he buried to break up the shutout and cut it to 4-1 with 15 to play:

Posted Image

However they would get no closer. At the halfway mark I put the game away, as Dorsett expertly deposited a rebound of a Johansen shot past the new goaltender Montoya to make it 5-1:

Posted Image

The Islanders took 2 more penalties about 2 minutes apart that basically locked up the game for me:

Posted Image

Posted Image

With less than a minute to go I closed the season with a flourish, as Brassard beat Montoya from long range (for just his 4th of the year) to make the final tally 6-1:

Posted Image

At the end, we celebrated a great season as Sanford closed with another great game:

Posted Image

Shots were 19-5 Jackets in the third, 41-25 for the game. I was 1/6 on the PP and they were 1/5, and I closed with a good performance in the faceoff circle, winning 27-11.

Posted Image

So we reached the end of a long journey that began in October. It was a good performance to close it out and it was a fun season. Now I head to the playoffs, where my first round opponent is in fact the hated Nashville Predators, so that will be gripping entertainment in that series. Before that I will post some goodies, a segment report for the end of the season, league leaders, stats, etc. I will also post the final standings and the playoff tree going into game 1. Thanks everyone for reading, and I hope you will keep tuning in for the playoffs. Until then, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where the final score was Columbus 6, Islanders 1.

So here are some screenshots from the end of the season. To start out, I won my division comfortably, despite how tough it was. We almost had 4 teams break 100 points, and 4 of the 5 made the playoffs. The Blues were in position before fading late.

Posted Image

Here were the final standings in the Western Conference:

Posted Image

You can see San Jose cruised to the best record, while I ended up winning the division title and finishing second. 4 teams broke 100. Chicago ended up beating out Detroit and Anaheim by a single point for the #4 spot, so they will get Anaheim, while Detroit gets Vancouver. Nashville is my first round opponent, while Dallas edged out the pair of Canadian teams to secure the last spot.

Here were the final standings in the Eastern Conference:

Posted Image

Here you can see Boston was the top team, while 5 teams broke 100. Washington pulled away in the final week to with the WE Division, so they will be a dangerous #3 despite the low point total. Philadelphia edged out Pittsburgh for the division and will now get Toronto in round 1. Pittsburgh gets Montreal in a good 4/5 matchup. In the last game, I knocked the Islanders out of the playoffs, as Tampa Bay passed 3 teams (NYI, NYR, CAR) in the final game to grab the #8 spot, making them very dangerous for Boston.

So here is the playoff tree as it stands heading into my game 1:

Posted Image

Early wins for Buffalo and Tampa have the higher seeds on the early defensive.

For league leaders, here was the final tally for goals. Nash won going away with 66, 10 more than his nearest competitor. Only 4 players broke 50 for the season.

Posted Image

For assists, Daniel Sedin was the surprise winner with 54. Carter was highest for me in 16th, which is very respectable considering he was also 15th in goals (above).

Posted Image

Thus for points, the big winner was Daniel Sedin with 101, one better than Malkin. Nash was third with 96, and Carter also finished in the top 10 with 81. I doubt I will ever get one guy in that list again, much less 2.

Posted Image

I will do team stats in a second post and also preview the Nashville series.

Thanks all...and yeah, I was surprised by HSedin scoring that many too...but it correlates with DSedin winning the assist title I guess.

So the final team stats were these:

Goals for: 282 (first)
Goals against: 219 (25th)

PP: 118/440, 26.8% (first)
PK: 288/339, 85.0% (last)

Goals:
Nash 66
Carter 38
Prospal 29
Umberger 24
Vermette 22

Assists:
Carter 43
Prospal 35
Umberger 31
Nash 30
Vermette 29

Points:
Nash 96
Carter 81
Prospal 64
Umberger 55

Western Conference Quarterfinals: Game 1
Nashville at Columbus

Again, here is what the playoff tree looks like going into game 1:

Posted Image

And here we go with the playoffs!

Posted Image

So after all the talk and the entire regular season, it is finally time for the playoffs. It couldn’t have been a better opening series opponent in Nashville because of proximity in location, division, and franchise age. We also split the 6 regular season contests (see above) which should make for a very competitive series. The refs tend to let ‘em play in the playoffs much moreso than the regular season games I have found, so even though the settings for penalties are the same I expect to have to score quite a few more even strength goals if I want to win the series. It also means that whoever is playing from behind in the third period is in serious trouble, because when the rules basically go out the window, it is really hard to come back and tie, let alone win. For me, the biggest decision going into the series was which goalie to use. Despite Dekanich’s better overall numbers, I decided on Sanford to begin the series, based on the last couple of weeks of the regular season and especially on his performance against the tougher teams on the schedule in that span. I can always change it up mid-series if he struggles. So, with all of that, here we go…to the Nationwide Arena for Game 1.

INJURIES:

NASHVILLE: Bouillon, Smithson, Sloan out
COLUMBUS: None

GOALIES:

NASHVILLE: Rinne
COLUMBUS: Sanford

Let them play is exactly what happened in the first period, as there were very few stoppages and the play ran fluidly. I had the better scoring chances in the period, but Rinne was clearly going to be very, very tough to beat this series, as the types of saves he came up with in the opening 20 set the tone for the entire series. On my side, Sanford held his own and the defense was pretty good, and I was good at matching their intensity. Only at the tail end of the period did a call get made, a holding call on Ellis with just 21 seconds left in the period, giving me a power play chance:

Posted Image

I actually did get a couple of shots off before the break, but Rinne turned them away, and we were scoreless at the first horn. Shots were 12-8 Jackets in the first and I was ahead on the small number of faceoffs (after winning less than 50% during the regular season) so I felt that if I could keep the pressure on, I had to break through against Rinne eventually.

Posted Image

Opening the second I was on the power play, and I really got some good shots early. Despite everything I was able to do, Rinne turned them all away, and I started to get frustrated. Just 64 seconds into the period, I actually got my first ever penalty on the goaltender (not pictured), as Sanford got called for tripping away from the play, evening the numbers briefly before giving the Preds their first power play chance. Luckily for me, my PK, which sat at 85% on the regular season, held up extremely well against this first test, and I turned the Preds away. Still they have grabbed some momentum, and the shots were flying at the net. 5 minutes in we finally had a breakthrough, but not one that was good for me, as Hornqvist sent a diagonal pass to Kostitsyn on the low block, and he banged home a one-timer after skillfully beating a hook by Nikitin (#64) to open the scoring and give the Preds the lead on the road:

Posted Image

Just 2 minutes later I was really in trouble, as the Preds doubled their lead after I had some really bad luck. Kostitsyn sent a pass to the middle to Suter, and he let a shot go just as he got hammered by Tyutin (#51). Unfortunately, when he got hit the shot got deflected and fluttered towards the net. Sanford, who had been in good position, was caught wrong-skated on the deflection, and the result was a 2-0 lead for the Preds:

Posted Image

At this point the game could have gotten away from me, but I fought as hard as I have all year to keep that from happening. I gave up a few more shots but counterattacked a couple of times and actually managed to seize back some momentum late in the period. What I wasn’t able to do was beat Rinne, so at the end of 2 frustrating period the home crowd was restless as the Preds led the game 2-0. Shots were 14-11 Preds in the second and even though I controlled faceoffs I wasn’t able to do anything with them. I found myself in exactly the position I didn’t want to be in, which is not only trying to come from behind in the 3rd when the rules go out the window, but trying to do so down multiple goals. At this point it looked like it would take a miracle to get 2 past Rinne to get back in it.

Posted Image

For the first 15 minutes of the third, it was the same as the first 2 periods. Nashville did just enough to pressure my net on occasion, while I was able to get my fair share of chances but Rinne turned them all away. He made a couple of cross-ice stops that defy description, and after 55 irritating minutes it appeared I was dead in the water. However with 5 to go I was finally able to break through. Brassard took the puck deep and worked off of a couple of checks in the corner boards. He then slid a pass all the way back to the cross point, where Nikitin quickly one-timed it from distance past a wrong-skated Rinne to cut the lead in half and give me a glimmer of hope with 5:10 to play:

Posted Image

About 90 seconds later the game’s fate was more or less sealed by the refs, who hadn’t called anything all game but now decided to call Methot for tripping, essentially allowing the Preds to run most of the remainder of the game off up a man:

Posted Image

I was able to kill the penalty off without giving up a goal, but when it was over I had less than 2 minutes to try and tie it up. I actually worked the puck to get a couple of great looks, but as he had all game, Rinne turned them away, celebrating vehemently as the final horn sounded and the Preds had stolen the first game on the road with a 2-1 victory amidst the boos of the partisan crowd:

Posted Image

Shots were 12-9 Columbus in the third, 35-31 for the game. Neither team scored on the power play (I was 0/1, they were 0/2) and I killed them on faceoffs 18-4, but I couldn’t get the puck past Rinne twice.

Posted Image

This was a horribly frustrating game where I got more than enough good shots off to win, but Rinne just turned them all away. It was reminiscent of Tugnutt in my 1996-97 Hartford Whalers season, where he stopped everything and I got swept while scoring like a total of 1-2 goals in 4 games. This sets up an obvious must-win situation in game 2, as there is no way I can drop both games at home and expect to win 2 in Nashville, which has been a graveyard for me since I started playing this game. Sanford played well enough to get a second start, as one goal was not at all his fault and he only gave up the 2. He really kept me in it when it could have gotten out of hand. With no power play chances I am going to have to set some more things up even strength, which means I am likely going to have to take more chances going forward, especially in Game 2, which I have to win. Until then, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where the final score in Game 1 was Nashville 2, Columbus 1.

Western Conference Quarterfinals: Game 2
Nashville at Columbus

Here is what the playoff tree looks like going into game 2:

Posted Image

You can see that both #8 seeds have one win at the #1s, and #6 Buffalo is off to a fast start against Washington, who are a #3 but had a pretty mediocre season.

Posted Image

Well after the loss in Game 1, I had best win Game 2. That’s pretty much what it came down to as I entered the Arena. Losing both games at home would easily send me to a quick defeat in the series, so I figured I absolutely needed to do everything in my power to win this one. That included scoring earlier, which I didn’t do in the last game, because coming from behind when the opponent can hook and hold at will in the third period is almost impossible. Sanford played well in the first game, so he was back in, I just had to hope Rinne looked at least mortal in this one. So it was off to the Nationwide Arena for the second game of the series and a real test for me. It would be a shame for the highly successful regular season to end in a 4 game sweep.

INJURIES:

NASHVILLE: Bouillon, Smithson, Sloan out
COLUMBUS: None

GOALIES:

NASHVILLE: Rinne
COLUMBUS: Sanford

I came out aggressive in the first, but unfortunately it was too aggressive, as Johnson got called for elbowing (not pictured) at 1:46 and I was down a man early. So my OK units got an early test but held up well again, and I was quickly able to turn the Preds away. What I was also able to do after that was control most of the rest of the period, as I owned faceoffs, puck control, and got the vast majority of the scoring chances. Unfortunately id didn’t benefit me on the scoreboard, as Rinne was back up to his old tricks and I was unable to get anything by him. At 14 minutes in the period, the Preds struck first on a goal that was much like their opener in the last game. A diagonal pass this time found Geoffrion on the low block, and he beat Methot and one-timed it in to give the Preds a stunning 1-0 advantage:

Posted Image

I kept the heat on, trying desperately to get back in it before the intermission, and I caught a break when Kostitsyn was called for holding along the boards with 90 seconds left in the period, giving me a rare power play chance:

Posted Image

This time I was finally able to break through on the man advantage. After some good puck movement it went to Nash on the point, who hammered a slapshot at Rinne. He stopped it but couldn’t hold it, and Carter was able to beat a cross-check and tip it past him from down low in front to even the score at 1 heading into the intermission:

Posted Image

Shots were 12-5 Jackets in the period and I was crushing them on faceoffs 12-1, but I was still fortunate just to be even. I really needed to keep pressing and keep the momentum in the second or I was going to be facing a deficit in the third for the second straight game, which would be a death knell.

Posted Image

We played the entire second period at even strength, and though I was able to do everything I had wanted to do in terms of possession and puck control, it was the Preds who broke through at the halfway mark. Blum found Fisher at the point, and his shot from distance beat Sanford for probably the weakest goal he has allowed, putting me down 2-1 with half a game to go:

Posted Image

Things looked grim as the period waned, and it appeared I would be trying to beat Super-Rinne for a third period equalizer to keep my hopes alive. However, with a little over 2 to play Nash was able to tip in a Prospal pass that was so quick I didn’t get a shot of it. It still counted, however, and the score was even and I had new life. The Preds seemed shaken, because less than a minute later some good puck movement found Pahlsson in a perfect position for a howitzer of a shot, and he clubbed it to beat Rinne and give me an improbable 3-2 lead heading into the third:

Posted Image

Shots were 11-8 Jackets in the period and I was still working them over in faceoffs. It was a burst late that got me the lead, much like the Preds got in the second period of game 1. Now it would be up to me to be able to hold the lead in the third and keep the Preds from coming back.

Posted Image

The third period was a masterpiece for me. I was able to control the puck, keep the heat off of Sanford, and attack with just enough voracity to keep the Preds somewhat on their heels. At 9 minutes I broke through again when Carter banged it home his second from distance after a nice outlet by Sanford and a quick trip up ice by Wisniewski to give me a 4-2 lead:

It was more than enough, as I worked past the final 10 minutes with little difficulty to secure the win. Shots were 12-5 Jackets in the third, 35-18 for the game. I cashed in my only power play while holding them back on theirs, and I slaughtered them on faceoffs 25-2 and controlled the puck for most of the game.

This was a big, big win for me, as any fears of a quick sweep subsided with this important victory. I still have to go to Nashville and get one of the next 2 or face a 3-1 deficit, but at least I’ve given myself a fighting chance. Sanford was pretty good again in this one, but it was my defense that ruled the day, allowing only 5 shots in 2 of the 3 periods. I had the puck in the attacking zone for most of the game and eventually wore Rinne down, who was still really good but not quite Roy-like as he was in Game 1. Playing from ahead in the third was key, so the quick 2 goals at the end of the second were really the difference in the entire complexion of the game. Heading into Nashville I need to keep puck pressure and control, something that will be harder to do on the road but not impossible. I will give Sanford one more start, and if I don’t win that one (or even if I do) I am likely to put in Dekanich for Game 4. If the offense plays like it did today, I have a good shot at it. If I play like Game 1 I will get blown out of Nashville. We shall see how it transpires. In the meantime, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where the final score of Game 2 was Columbus 4, Nashville 2.
