Charter Member Posts: 391 Group: Members Member #38 Joined: April 6, 2011	Western Conference Quarterfinals: Game 3 Columbus at Nashville Here is what the playoff tree looks like going into game 3: You can see that TB has a 2-1 lead on Boston and that Washington pulled one back against Buffalo. Detroit and Chicago winning in the West is not really a surprise. So after averting fears of a quick 4 game sweep by winning Game 2, I headed to Nashville for a pair. Game 3 is a pivotal one because the winner will have control of the series at this point, forcing the loser to win 3 of the last 4 to advance. For me I was targeting winning one of the two games in order to get home ice back, as dropping both would mean winning 3 in a row, which I don’t see happening. So Game 3 was set up with the lineups basically the same as they were before, though Smithson could be back at any time for the Preds. The goaltender matchup was the same as the split in Columbus, so we were set up for a pivotal swing game at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. INJURIES: COLUMBUS: None NASHVILLE: Bouillon, Sloan out; Smithson DTD GOALIES: COLUMBUS: Sanford NASHVILLE: Rinne I thought it would be important to come out on the road and establish things early, and after half a dozen nondescript minutes I was able to do just that. Byers ended up finding Dorsett, who was held over from a line change, in front, and he ripped it past Rinne stick side to give me an early 1-0 lead: One thing that did become clear early was that the refs were going to play more of a role in this game, after calling just 5 total penalties in the 2 games in Columbus. Less than a minute after my goal, Brassard was off for hooking and the Preds had a chance to pull one back: My PK has been good when called upon thus far, and this one was no different, as I was able to kill it off with relative ease. At the halfway mark Hillen went for hooking in a scrum in front of the net and I had a chance to expand my lead up a man for the first time: Unfortunately the Predator kill was just as good as mine, and for the 3rd time in 4 chances in the series they turned away my power play despite a couple of good shots. At 14 minutes the home side evened it up, as Spaling found Laakso out front, and he drilled a slapshot past a dense screen that beat Sanford and tied it at 1: Two minutes later the Preds took the lead, as their MVP (besides Rinne) so far, Kostitsyn, found Legwand in front from behind the net, and he beat Sanford high side to give the Preds a 2-1 lead: At 17 minutes Wilson went for hooking and I had my second power play of the period: However Rinne was brilliant again and the Predator defense was able to control the puck some, and I was turned away for the second time. Towards the end of the period Vermette was whistled for hooking, and I had a split PK to end the period and open the second: I was able to kill the first part off and get to the horn, but barely, as the Preds put good pressure on for the final 30 seconds. At the intermission it was a 2-1 game. I outshot them 11-8 and controlled faceoffs 9-7, so I still felt pretty good about where I was. I certainly didn’t want to get behind by 2 goals on the road though, so I figured I had best seize the momentum opening the second. And that’s exactly what I did. As I killed off the rest of the penalty, Blum went for hooking, so we had some 4-on-4 and then a brief PP for me: I wasn’t able to score on this sequence, but I had all of the momentum, was controlling the puck, and I was putting big heat on Rinne. For the rest of the first half of the period, it continued that way, until at 11 minutes Halischuk went for hooking and I had a golden opportunity to draw even: Unfortunately I was unable to, as I peppered the net with shots but Rinne was always there and the Pred defenders cleared rebounds. I kept pressuring and a goal seemed like a foregone conclusion eventually until Wisniewski went for interference at 15 minutes, as somehow the refs spotted something in a mass of bodies in front: I was able to kill the penalty off, but it stifled my offensive momentum. I got one more chance to end the period when Hornqvist went for hooking, giving me a PP for the remainder of the period: Unfortunately all that did was complete my epic period of frustration, as I was unable to get a puck past Rinne. As the horn sounded, I slammed my controller down in disgust as I was still down 2-1 despite outshooting the Preds 18-5 in the period. Of course I was only still down one goal, but the feeling was that the Preds had weathered the storm and that my big push for the game had come up empty despite my dominance. All I could do was persevere opening the third, but I didn’t have a very good feeling about it as the period opened. At 3 minutes Vermette went for hooking, and sure enough all of the momentum seemed to swing back to the Preds: I was still able to execute some high quality PK shifts by being very conservative, but the Preds had the luxury of allowing that since they were ahead. Kostitsyn went quickly for hooking himself, however, and the power play was quickly averted: Still the momentum shift had occurred, and the Preds were in anything goes mode for the rest of the period as the refs put the whistles away. At the halfway point Wilson outworked (or should I say outhooked and outheld) my defenders in the corner boards and sent a pass back out front to Bergfors, who swept in a slapshot past Sanford to give the Preds an all-but-insurmountable 3-1 lead with less than 10 to play: At this point the Preds stopped even trying to score, and focused on holding and hooking full time. However 2 minutes after going down by 2, I pulled one back, as Pahlsson got the puck and was trying to pass it, but it went off a skate and he ended up one-timing it past an unsuspecting Rinne to cut it to 3-2 with about 7:30 to go: For the final 7 minutes though, this is where playing from behind in the third really reared its ugly head. With no penalties, the Preds were smothering with all kinds of illegal tactics, and there was nothing I could do. I needed speed but didn’t have it because my guys were always tired from fighting off hooks and holds, so they always easily caught up to me and hooked the puck away as soon as I got to their blue line. In the end I was able to get no closer, and as the final horn sounded I went down to defeat 3-2 in the game and 2-1 in the series, setting up a must-win in game 4. Shots were 14-9 Preds in the third, but were 38-27 Jackets for the game, and faceoffs favored the Preds but were about even (17-15). The PK units for both teams were stellar, as I went 0/6 on the PP and held them to 0/4. This was a bitter loss. For those who enter the playoffs in your own seasons, do everything you can not to be behind heading into the third period, because once all bets are off, the CPU is very hard to beat. I was playing from behind for most of this game and I really lost it in the second when I beat the crap out of them all over the ice but was unable to get a single goal. Sanford was solid but not great, so I will likely look to Dekanich in the pivotal Game 4. In the meantime I am going to have to figure out how to score in general and on PP chances in particular. My PK has been great but the PP has been lousy, and I am just not scoring enough to win. I will need to win Game 4 because going down 3-1 will spell almost certain doom, so we’ll see what happens. NHL 2004. It's in the game! Posts: 741 Group: Members Member #4,041 Joined: March 15, 2012	Well... I currently play a season with the Red Wings. Today I played a regular season game against STL Blues. After 2nd period I was leading 3-0, but in the last minute of the 3rd, they scored twice. This is so tough to keep a clean sheet... and they always press so hard in the last few minutes of the game. But I guess it's very realistic. Anyway - all the best for your games.

Vancouver is level with Detroit and San Jose is in control of Dallas. After dropping a 3-2 heartbreaker in Game 3, I was really on the ropes for Game 4. A loss would mean a 3-1 deficit and a requirement to win 3 in a row, which is highly unlikely. A win would even the series and send it back to Columbus, where I like my chances a lot better. The big news in this one is the switch to Dekanich in goal. I don’t feel Sanford was doing a bad job, but his save % was below 90 and he just wasn’t able to get me in position to get a lead late in the game. So I figure at this stage it isn’t a bad choice to see what Dekanich has to offer, as if he can shut it down in net for this game (and especially the first 2 periods) I could be right back in the series, and that’s one thing Sanford hasn’t done. Otherwise the lines are the same and Rinne looms on the other goal line. So against the backdrop of a de facto must win for my Jackets, we headed to the Bridgestone Arena for Game 4. INJURIES: COLUMBUS: None NASHVILLE: Bouillon, Sloan out; Smithson DTD GOALIES: COLUMBUS: Dekanich NASHVILLE: Rinne The first period was a thumping, back-and-forth affair, exactly as one would expect a playoff series like this one to go. Not much happened in the first half of the period until 9 minutes, when Johnson got the gate for hooking and I was down a man for the first time in the game: Fortunately, the PK is the one area where I have really excelled this series, and that continued here, as I turned the Preds away with good defense and a couple of nice saves by Dekanich, who was into the game early. After getting back to even strength we traded barbs for a while until 15 minutes, when Legwand went for hooking and I had myself a power play: Unlike my PK, which has been good, I have done very little with my limited power play chances, which has hurt me this series so far. Fortunately, this time I stunned the home crowd quickly, as it took just 13 seconds for Vermette to get the puck deep and find Umberger in front for a one-timer and a 1-0 lead: The stunned Preds regrouped quickly but then at the end of the period Kostitsyn got called for holding, and I would have a split period power play: The Preds killed the 30 or so seconds in the first to get to the horn to be down 1-0. Shots were 8-7 Jackets in a defensive period where I was pretty happy with the pace. Faceoffs and passing were about even, so it was still very much anyone’s hockey game heading into the second. The Preds killed off the remaining power play time I had, and it didn’t take long for them to get their second PP chance, as Prospal went for roughing at 4 minutes: Again my PK units came through, as for some reason I really have a good feel for the PK right now. Dekanich was playing lights out and my defense cleared well, so I killed it off without much trouble. So back to even strength we went and much like the first period neither team was able to take control of the proceedings. At 12 minutes Brassard went for holding and the Preds had another opportunity up a man: This time they finally dented the armor, as Klein was able to find Geoffrion in close for an eventual tap-in to tie the score at 1: We were at even strength the rest of the period, and neither team was able to do anything with it. At the end of 2 periods, the game was tied at 1, and shots were 11-9 Preds in the second, so they were basically even for the game. Neither team could penetrate the defense 5-on-5 in the first 2 periods, so with whistles generally put away in the third, that would likely be the key to win the game. I wasn’t exactly happy with my position, but I wasn’t behind entering the third, so I was in good shape there. If I could find a way to get just one goal, I could dictate the pace for the rest of the game. However if I gave one up, I was likely looking at being down 3-1. So the most important period of the season was going to commence. And lo and behold, there was indeed a goal at the beginning of the third that established play for the remainder of the game. It came when Dorsett was able to get deep behind the net and feed Vermette perfectly for a quick wrister past Rinne, giving me a dramatic 2-1 lead with 18 to play before a stunned partisan crowd: After this it was defense, defense, defense for me. I didn’t just want to sit on a one goal lead, but I figured if I could protect first, then I could counter-attack when I got the chance. As the period wore on, I wore them down. Fisher took an elbowing minor at the halfway point, giving me one final PP chance. I didn’t score, but it was 2 more minutes that the Preds basically had to do nothing but play defense. Time continued to wind and I got closer and closer to the coveted win. One expects big players to come up big in big games, and with just a minute to go, that indeed happened. Carter outworked the Nashville defense in the corner boards and found Nash in front, and the captain sealed the game at 3-1: I got called for hooking with 11 seconds left, but by then I had the win in the bag: And the team celebrated with Dekanich, who had played very well and led a team-wide effort for the victory: Shots were 7-5 Preds in the third, but I got 2 goals. Shots were 25-22 for the Preds in the game, and we were both 1/3 on the PP. I won faceoffs 15-10. This was a gigantic win in a game that I had to have on the road. Dekanich played brilliantly and I kept the shots he faced to a minimum, which also helped. I counter-attacked well and scored just enough to dictate the tempo in the third. Working from ahead late is the key, as I was able to shut them down and close it out late. So it’s back to Columbus for the pivotal Game 5 with the series tied at 2-2. Needless to say, Dekanich will stay in the net. Winning this game was big, but if I lose the next one I will be facing elimination, so I need to savor this briefly and then focus on the next one. Charter Member Posts: 391 Group: Members Member #38 Joined: April 6, 2011	Western Conference Quarterfinals: Game 5 Nashville at Columbus Here is what the playoff tree looks like going into game 5: TB has Boston on the brink, while Buffalo closed out Washington and Montreal has Pittsburgh on the ropes. On my side, Detroit leads Vancouver and San Jose is a win away over Dallas. So after pulling even in Game 4, it was back to Columbus for Game 5. Dekanich was still in the net for me, and Rinne was looking for a bounceback performance for Nashville. With the series even at 2, this is the most pivotal of Game 5s, as the loser will be forced to win 2 in a row to close it out in 7. So with that, the Nationwide Arena hosted Game 5 last night…not much else to say, so let’s get to the action. INJURIES: NASHVILLE: Sloan out; Bouillon DTD COLUMBUS: None GOALIES: NASHVILLE: Rinne COLUMBUS: Dekanich The first period was tough and evenly matched, but there was a bit more offense at both ends than I anticipated. It took just 4 minutes for the first penalty, as Spaling went for holding along the boards and I was up a man first: After squeezing off a few good shots at Rinne, unfortunately the tables turned as Vermette and Tyutin were called for penalties exactly 2 minutes apart, putting me down a man for a spell heading into the halfway point of the period: Fortunately my PK units were functioning as well as they had all series and Dekanich made a couple of phenomenal saves on back-door one-timers, and I was able to kill off the extended PP time and get back to even strength, where we spent the rest of the period. Neither team was able to mount an advantage, though both got a couple of good offensive pushes. At the tail end of the period, Hornqvist got called for holding in front, so I would get to start the second on the PP: And that brought an end to the first period, with the game scoreless on an even 11-11 shooting. I was leading in faceoffs and passing, but Rinne was really good in the first and I wasn’t able to take advantage. Coming out in the second, the home fans got behind me and I began by thoroughly dominating the period. That is, except on the scoreboard. Rinne saved everything, regardless of how well I set it up. I went for primary shots, I went for secondary shots, I went for tertiary shots off of 2 quick passes, and it didn’t matter. At 8 minutes Rinne himself took a tripping minor and I was up a man: I bombarded him with offensive pressure, but I was still not able to beat him. At 13 minutes frustration got the better of me and Byers took a hooking call: However I was easily able to casually toss that PK aside with virtually no pressure on Dekanich, and for the last 5 minutes of the period I was back all over him. He saved a couple of back-door, cross-ice one-timers that defied description or physics, and as the period came to a close all I could do was slam my controller down in disgust. I outshot Nashville 13-3 in a period where they did absolutely nothing the entire 20 minutes, and yet I still had no goals. I was going to open the third trying to keep that same level of pressure on, but I had a really bad feeling, considering I could have been going 5-on-1 and taken 100 shots in the second and I still wouldn’t have scored. Sure enough in the third, things started to turn the other way. I still got my chances, but the Preds were back to playing even hockey like they did in the first. Just to add insult to injury and make me want to consider burning my entire PC, the first goal came on a ridiculous deflection. 7 minutes in, Erat passed to Geoffrion, who shot a puck that went right off of Methot. Instead of deflecting anywhere else, it went high and straight, fluttering past a helpless Dekanich, who had come out to cover the angle, and giving the Preds the entirely BS 1-0 lead with 13 to go: Oh but the game wasn’t done mocking me. I pushed hard to get the equalizer, and despite getting the crap hooked and held out of me, I was able to get a couple of ridiculous point blank one-timers off. Of course Rinne saved them both, and then the Preds came down ice. At 12 minutes Wilson found Bergfors on the wing, but I pushed him deep and he had no angle whatsoever. So he sent a pass towards the net, looking for the one-timer. Instead, the puck deflected directly off of Nikitin and straight into the net, giving the Preds the most ridiculous 2-0 lead in the history of organized hockey: At this point I more or less gave up, because the game was over. I played it out and did my best, but given what had happened there was no way the CPU was letting me back in this game. Rinne celebrated his shutout as the horn sounded and the fans rioted and tossed garbage on the ice (OK, I made that up, but I can envision it happening): Shots were 10-9 Jackets in the third, 34-23 for the game. I killed them on faceoffs 23-7 and dominated the puck for probably 4/5 of this game. Dekanich gave up no goals, as both went in on bullcrap deflections. Both teams were 0/3 on the PP, so I have still only given up one PP goal in 5 games, and yet here I sit down 2-3 heading back to Nashville. I have little to say that likely won’t get me banned from the board, so I’ll keep it brief. I don’t mind losing, I don’t mind playing hard and coming up on the short end…but when the opposing goalie has 8 arms and 8 legs, and I play well enough not to give up any and 2 go in off of straight BS deflections, I question why I use my limited time I have playing this game. Of course I say that and then I will calm down and play Game 6. But still, this is very, very hard to swallow at this stage. If this is a regular season game, I likely get mad for about 5 minutes, then chuckle and move on to the next one. But when you play hard for months to get to the playoffs, work your butt off to get to 2-2, and then this happens…I don’t know. As it is, I head back to Nashville for Game 6, which is now officially an elimination game for me. I just have to hope Dekanich keeps playing as well as he has the past 2 games, and that I can somehow beat a goaltender who wouldn’t have been scored on by the 96-97 Red Wings if they had been out there for 200 minutes. We’ll see what happens, but at least I want to push this to a Game 7 so I can maximize my playoff hockey if this is indeed my only series. Plus it would provide some redemption for today’s result. I was thirty-three seconds away from a stanley cup-final with the Flyers in my 1996-1997 season when Eric Lindros misplayed the puck in his own zone ending with the Devils tying in and scoring in the OT. Your game 5 is an exact photoshop of my Game 7. I played my ass off in that game and it ended up with Elias scoring a bullshit-goal and Brodeur saving EVERY SINGLE SCORING-ATTEMPT. It's frustrating and you hate it but to add a cliché: That's hockey. Anyways, good luck with Game 6. Play your best and hope for the win!

I have gotten really busy and haven't had as much time, but without further ado... Western Conference Quarterfinals: Game 6 Columbus at Nashville Here is what the playoff tree looks like going into game 6: Starting to get some series results now. TB closed out top seeded Boston (just like Washington in real life I guess), joining Buffalo in the East. Philadelphia and Montreal are also one game from going through over Toronto and Pittsburgh, respectively. On my side, Detroit closes out Vancouver, while Dallas forces a Game 7 with San Jose and Anaheim has Chicago on the edge. So after dropping the last game in what I consider to be controversial fashion, it was back to Nashville for the elimination Game 6. Win and I push it back to Columbus for the series decider, lose and I break out Links 2001 and start playing golf. I decided I would come out hot and try and get an early lead, because if I fell behind I figured there was no hope in coming back if we got to the later second or third. So as we headed to the Bridgestone Arena, I was all in for an early lead. INJURIES: COLUMBUS: None NASHVILLE: Sloan, Hillen out; Bouillon DTD GOALIES: COLUMBUS: Dekanich NASHVILLE: Rinne My goal was to jump on them early, and after 2 minutes it was mission accomplished, as Rich Nash stole the puck down low and withstood a vicious cross-check to beat Rinne in an amazing one man effort to give me the 1-0 advantage: After 5 more back-and-forth minutes, we had a series of rapid penalty exchanges, which all more or less led to very abbreviated power plays and some extended 4-on-4 time. The first of such exchanges came at 8 minutes and involved penalties on Wisniewski and Legwand: At the halfway mark it was Blum and then Johnson: Then it was Vermette for interference, which initially put me down 5-on-3 for about a minute and gave the Preds a great chance to draw even: However it has been my PK, of all things, that has kept me in the series, and again I was able to turn the frustrated Preds away. At 15 minutes, Kostitsyn headed to the box for holding: This time, I was able to pounce on the man advantage, as Prospal sent a perfect feed to Carter in front for a big one-timer and an early commanding 2-0 lead in just 14 seconds on power play time: A minute later Brassard went for hooking, and I sensed it was a critical point in the game. If I could get to the break still up 2-0, I thought I had a really good chance: My PK cruised to an easy kill once again, and as the period ended, all the momentum was on my side. Although shots were 9-8 Preds and faceoffs were even as well, I was up 2-0 and I really felt in control of the game. It would be critical for me to weather the first few minutes of the second without conceding a goal, and then if I could do that, I thought that one more might just be enough with the way Dekanich has been playing. To open the second there was a brief flurry by Nashville, but Hornqvist went for hooking at 2 minutes and quickly I took control: I didn’t score on the power play, but I peppered Rinne with shots and set the tone for the rest of the period. At 7 minutes we had another penalty exchange, with Kostitsyn and Johansen: Again although I didn’t score I dominated the run of play, which is the luxury I had while ahead by 2. The next 5 minutes went by much the same, until finally my dominance produced a goal when Carter deftly tapped in a Wisniewski shot to make it 3-0: For the rest of the period I just kept beating them up and keeping the puck completely away from my net. Up 3 I really just played defense, though towards the end I pushed on a counter-attack and drew a period-closing penalty on Fisher, meaning I would start the third on the PP. As the period ended the Nashville crowd was in riot mode as I had basically blown them out of the building through 2, with a 15-4 shot edge in the period. Faceoffs were still about even and neither of us was doing much on the PP, but at this point that mattered little to me. I was 20 minutes away from forcing a game 7 and with a lead, it was defense and counter-attack all the way as I opened the third up a man. Over the first 15 minutes of the third, I executed my plan to perfection. I was up 3, so the goal was to limit rebounds, clear pucks, and stay out of the box. I got my share of shots in, but the more important thing was that I forced longer range shots from Nashville and Dekanich was doing a good job of turning them away. As time went by the Preds got more desperate and it was clear they would need a miracle to win. At 14 minutes, Vermette went for hooking, and the door was opened ever so slightly: However a minute later Blum was shown the gate for hooking, and we were right back even: Towards the end, of course, I had a brief power play, and I played it a bit too conservatively. Nashville stole the puck, went for broke, and in typical fashion, wouldn’t go away without a fight, as Klein ended up beating 2 attempted blocks for a short-handed goal to cut it to 3-1 with still 3:16 to play: Instead of panicking though, I took the ensuing faceoff, broke into the zone, and calmly put the nail in the coffin, as Wisniewski took the puck deep and then contributed to a screen while Prospal sent a screamer past Rinne from the blue line to make it 4-1 with 3 to play: With a minute to go, Tyutin went for hooking, but by then it didn’t matter: The final minute ticked off and the horn sounded, and Dekanich had a huge victory and I was able to force a Game 7 back in Columbus: Shots were 14-11 Preds in the third, 34-27 Jackets for the game. I took faceoffs 22-16 and was 2/7 on the power play, while holding them to 0/6. Not much needs to be said here postgame, this was obviously an immensely satisfying victory on the road, to push it back to Columbus for a Game 7, where I have actually won less games (1) than I have in Nashville (2). There will be no excuses for me if I can’t win this series, because 2 road victories should be more than enough. So it’s back to Columbus for an all-or-nothing Game 7 against a team that I hate and came into the league about the same time and plays in the same division…gotta love hockey.
