Western Conference Quarterfinals: Game 7
Nashville at Columbus

Here is what the playoff tree looks like going into game 7:

Posted Image

Just one other series remains undecided, as Toronto and Philadelphia play a Game 7 out east. The rest of the results are in. On my side, top seed San Jose slipped past Dallas in 7, while lower seeds Detroit and Anaheim (probably the 2 other best teams in the conference with SJ and Columbus most of the season) won a pair of 4-2 decisions over Vancouver and Chicago, respectively. Out East, #8 Tampa shocked Boston in just 6 games, while lower seeds Buffalo and Montreal also advanced relatively easily over Washington and Pittsburgh, respectively.

All that needs to be said is: Game 7. Win or go home. To the Nationwide Arena for the final verdict from this back-and-forth series.

INJURIES:

NASHVILLE: Sloan out
COLUMBUS: None

GOALIES:

NASHVILLE: Rinne
COLUMBUS: Dekanich

What does one expect from a Game 7? Exactly what we got in period #1. The first 15 minutes was an exercise in mental and physical toughness, as no player went unhit, no puck went unchallenged, and no shot went without a block attempt. Back and forth we went, with neither team able to carve out an advantage. At 15 minutes, we had a quick sequence of penalties, which started with Hillen for roughing, quickly followed by Johnson and Erat for hooking, and the end result was a Jacket power play to basically close the period:

As they have done so often thus far in the series, however, the Predator PK turned me away, and the period closed without a goal. I guess in my tension I forgot to take a screenshot of the period break, but shots and faceoffs were relatively even in the period, and the entire series would come down to the final 40 minutes.

Opening the second, things continued as they had. Legwand took a holding penalty at 3 minutes, giving me another shot to take the lead with a man advantage:

Posted Image

However the Predator kill was good again, and I was turned away once more. Back to even strength we went for about 4 minutes, during which time it still seemed like we were playing OT, because neither team was conceding an inch and it seemed like the first goal might win it. As we approached the halfway point of the game, I was happy with where I was, right up until Methot took a boarding penalty for this vicious hit along the bench, and it was the Preds turn to try and gain the lead:

Posted Image

Here the game did turn…but not in the way you might think. I started off killing the penalty with quality clearances and play from Dekanich, as I have done all series. But then I got the puck deep and started playing keep-away, frustrating the Pred PP unit as they had to keep chasing me. At about 1:30 of the PP, Wisniewski got the puck along the boards and was retreating, so he fired a backhander at the net. You can see from the shot below that Nash was right beside the net. Right after the shot, the captain executed a perfect cut in front of Rinne to screen him and position himself for a rebound. I thought the puck deflected off of his stick, but either way a goal was credited to Wisniewski as the puck sailed past Rinne, sending the crowd into a frenzy as I took a 1-0 lead shorthanded:

Posted Image

The game was far from over, but the Preds seemed to panic a little bit. They overcommitted to the zone late in the power play with a tired line, and as the penalty ended, they were forced into a Hornqvist roughing minor to prevent a breakout, so I had another PP chance:

Posted Image

Sensing blood in the proverbial water, I was patient but knew this was the time I really needed to seize control. After about 90 seconds of PP time, I finally had a golden chance, as Wisniewski took the puck deep and hit Nash with a pass in front. The captain left no doubt as to who put this goal in, and at 14 minutes I had doubled my lead to 2-0:

Posted Image

Tactical changes when ahead or behind are critical, and since this was Game 7 and I was only up 2 goals, I didn’t ramp down my aggressiveness at all. It didn’t take long for that to cost me, as less than a minute after the second goal, Atkinson was sent off after another big hit along the bench:

Posted Image

As one would expect, the Preds weren’t going anywhere, and after just 8 seconds Hillen hit Hornqvist for a sharp angled backhander that came from what seems to be Dekanich’s weakest spot on the ice, and the lead was cut right back down to 2-1 with 5 to play in the second:

Posted Image

Next goal wins? In a 2-1 Game 7 with 25 minutes to play, one had to figure that the next goal would be the most crucial of the season for both teams. If they got it, the game was tied. If I got it, I was back up 2 with a period…or less…to go. So the puck dropped and off we went again, and I stuck to my guns of staying aggressive along the boards and with the puck. The Pred counter-attack hadn’t hurt me so far, so I kept trying to get the puck deep and set up chances. The result here would change the course of the season. At 16 minutes, I took the puck in, and after some good movement Dorsett slid a cross-ice pass to Johansen, who beat a defender with a one-timer as he was being cross-checked. The puck confused Rinne and sailed past him, and the crowd went ballistic as I was up 3-1:

Posted Image

At this point I wanted to hold that lead at all costs heading into the third, so it was time to platy defense. Unfortunately the Preds took advantage and pressed the puck in, leading me to take a Byers hooking penalty to prevent a one-timed scoring chance with less than a minute left:

Posted Image

I killed off the final few seconds of the period, and though I would start the third on the PK for 90 seconds or so, I had held my 3-1 lead to the second intermission. At this point shots were 22-18 Preds, but I had taken a significant advantage in faceoffs and had passed the puck pretty well, meaning I had spent 40 minutes dictating the run of play. What would happen in the third? What should I do in the third? These questions vexed me as I sat 20 minutes away from my most dramatic win ever playing this game. But there was a long way to go…

Posted Image

So entering the third I decided not to let up. I went back to trying to dictate, because I figured if I let the Preds set the tone, they could get 2 goals back rather quickly. So my fateful decision was to go all out and keep pressing with the lead. The Preds made a big run at a goal early in the period, but Dekanich was playing well and I held steady. At 9 minutes, we had it. Brassard hit Nash with a pass at the blue line on a line change, and Nash found himself with some open ice. He entered the zone, made a deke, and fired a howitzer at the net, which beat Rinne and put the nail in the coffin at 4-1 with just 11 minutes to go:

Posted Image

The crowd was in a frenzy, and it was time now for me to dial it back and play defense as we hit the halfway point of the period. I kept patiently clearing pucks, changing lines, blocking shots, collecting rebounds…and the Preds seemed to have the air removed from their sails a bit. With less than 4 to play, the countdown to victory was interrupted, however, as Brassard got the gate for interference:

Posted Image

I held them off for a minute of PP time, but finally Legwand (center, behind the defenders) got a rebound deep and pounded it in from point blank range, giving the Preds a glimmer of hope at 4-2 with less than 3 minutes to play:

Posted Image

This night would belong to Nash and the Jackets, though. I killed off a couple of more minutes, and when Ellis took a hooking penalty with 55 seconds left, the celebration began:

Posted Image

As the final horn sounded, I had done it. I won the elimination game, after facing elimination in Game 6 as well. Shots ended up 30 apiece in a well-played game, with faceoffs at 28-10 Jackets. I was 1/5 on the PP and the Preds were 2/4. I passed the puck well and that was a big key to victory.

Posted Image

And there it is. Victory over the hated Predators in 7 excruciating games. This was an amazing game to play, a great series to play, and just a hell of a good time all the way around, despite my anger after Game 5. The tactical switch to Dekanich from Sanford after Game 3 proved to be my best move, as he won 3 of the final 4 games. Also my decision to keep pushing hard in this game paid off handsomely, as I kept pressure on their net and off my net until I established a good-sized lead. Having the lead heading into the third (or at least being tied) is clearly the biggest key here, something I will carry with me into my next series. I didn’t even look at who I play, I was too excited and exhausted from this roller-coaster ride of a game and series. So I’ll print out the tree and the results from all of the other series, and for the second year in a row I will head into the Conference Semi-Finals. Last year I got swept by Anaheim, I know they and Detroit won the other series, so either way, the next one will be one for the ages as well. But until then, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where the final score of this dramatic game was Columbus 4, Nashville 2.

Thanks everyone for all your support and keep tuning in for the next round.

Here is what the playoff tree looks like going into game 1:

Posted Image

And here we go with the semifinals. San Jose is up a game early on Detroit, while Tampa looks like a favorite in the East, beating #2 Philadelphia in Game 1.

Posted Image

So here we go with Game 1 of the Conference Semifinals in a rematch of last season. The Ducks swept me out of the playoffs last year after my Round 1 victory over Phoenix, so despite beating them 3 times in 4 tries during the regular season (twice in OT), I was very wary entering the series. Their top line might be the hardest line to play against in the game, and Hiller has always given me fits between the pipes. Now more than ever I have to be ahead or even heading into third periods, because making up late deficits against this team will be nearly impossible. Special teams will be critical as well. I don’t foresee a lot of PP opportunities, but the team that takes advantage of them will likely win 1-2 games on special teams play alone. So with that it was off to the Nationwide Area for the series opener.

INJURIES:

ANAHEIM: Beleskey, Beauchemin out
COLUMBUS: None

GOALIES:

ANAHEIM: Hiller
COLUMBUS: Dekanich

Surprisingly it didn’t take long for the whistles to start blowing in this one. Ryan got a hooking minor in the first minute, and I had an immediate power play:

Posted Image

Despite a couple of shots it was evident that the Ducks meant business, as several top like guys were on the PK and they did a masterful job of killing it off. Quickly we were back to even strength for a couple of minutes until Nash took an interference call approaching 7 minutes:

Posted Image

The Ducks masterfully took advantage, as Foster put a puck on net that Dekanich turned away, but Perry was right there in perfect position for the chip-in to make it 1-0 Ducks:

Posted Image

Just 30 seconds later off of the faceoff, I was really in trouble, as Selanne slid a pass to Blake for another short-range goal to double the lead to 2-0 just 8 minutes in:

Posted Image

However a minute later, the checking line got something going, as Atkinson stole a puck in the zone, made 2 quick moves, and fired a puck past Hiller, who had an obstructed view, to but the lead in half as we approached the halfway mark in the period:

Posted Image

90 seconds later Tyutin took a tripping minor, and the Ducks had another golden opportunity to take command of the game again:

Posted Image

However I got control of the puck in their zone and killed off some good time on the PP. Frustrated, Hiller distributed the puck in an attempt to get something going up ice. Unfortunately for him, it went right to Pahlsson off of a deflection, and he put it in the net before Hiller could get back into position, evening the game 2-2 shorthanded:

Posted Image

The final 8 minutes of the period went by quickly, and after 20 minutes of play, we were tied 2-2 after a back-and-forth period. Shots were 12-9 Jackets and faceoffs and puck control were about even, so after a stalemate in period 1, the game was anyone’s to take in period 2.

Posted Image

Instead period 2 was more like an OT period, where neither team took too many chances because no one wanted to make the big mistake. As the period wore on, Anaheim began to take control, and they had most of the offensive zone time and scoring chances. At 13 minutes Methot went for tripping and the Ducks had the only special teams chance in the period:

Posted Image

They peppered Dekanich with shots but somehow I was able to turn them away, and the end result was no scoring. Towards the tail end of the period Brookbank took a hooking call, which basically set me up with a PP to start the third:

Posted Image

The period ended with little fanfare and no scoring, but it seemed like I had weathered the Duck barrage. Shots were 13-4 Anaheim in the period and they got a leg up on faceoffs, but it was still a 2-2 game and I had a good opportunity to get Game 1 in the third period.

Posted Image

The first half of the third period was a continuation of the second, except this time I had most of the offensive chances. As the period went by, I had more and more puck control and I seemed to be beating them down the ice and getting into good positions. At 11 minutes, I finally made it pay off, as Johnson took the puck in front and then slid it to Savard on the other side, which he banged home for a back-door one-timer to give me a 3-2 lead in front of a raucous crowd:

Posted Image

That was the good news…the bad news was that unfortunately I didn’t even get time to set up my defensive strategy to protect the lead, because in just 32 seconds McMillan stole the puck in the corner and slid a complete cross-ice feed to Sbisa, who was waiting on the doorstep to bang it in and tie the game at 3:

Posted Image

At 14 minutes Gordon went for roughing, and I had the final special teams opportunity of the game:

Posted Image

At this point I peppered Hiller with more shots than I have probably ever gotten off on a power play. There were shots, rebound shots, and rebound shots off of rebound shots…and yet somehow Hiller turned them all away in one of those superhuman goaltending spurts that the game sometimes gives itself. There were a couple he never should have been able to make, but he did. After the PP closed, the final 4 minutes went by pretty quickly, and at the final horn, we were headed to OT tied at 3. Shots were 20-12 Jackets in the third, and I had a sinking feeling that I had missed my chance (or had it taken away from me, depending how you look at it) to win, but in OT obviously it’s still anyone’s game.

Posted Image

In OT I got a couple of early chances, building on the momentum of the last period, but then they started blocking everything and the tide turned. About 2:30 in, I got stuck with a tired line on the ice and Selanne was camped on the doorstep when Koivu hit him with a pass and the Ducks had themselves an OT winner and a 1-0 series lead:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Shots for the game were 39-38 Ducks after a 5-2 OT period, and they were 1/3 on the PP while I went 0/3. Faceoffs wended up 19-18 Ducks, so it was about even.

Posted Image

Not much to say about this one post-game, it was a tough battle and I hung in there until the very end. I was not pleased with Hiller’s superhuman goaltending in the third, but I still had lots of chances and certainly could have easily won the game. This is 5 playoff losses in a row to the Ducks now, so I don’t have a great feeling about the series as a whole, but I dropped a tough one against Nashville where Rinne was superhuman too, so anything can still happen. Probably a must-win in Game 2, because going to Anaheim down 2-0 would be a disaster. So the margin for error is gone, but I am still hanging in there and was happy with the way I battled in Game 1. Until the next game, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where the final score was Anaheim 4, Columbus 3 in OT.

Western Conference Semifinals: Game 2
Anaheim at Columbus

Here is what the playoff tree looks like going into game 2:

Posted Image

San Jose with a commanding lead on Detroit, while Phily pulled even and Montreal is up early.

Posted Image

So after dropping a heartbreaker in OT in Game 1, it was back out for Game 2 in what is certainly a must win, because no matter how good you think you are at the game, you never want to drop the first 2 games of a series at home. Lineups were the same, so off to the Nationwide Arena to see if I could level the series or if the Ducks could net their 6th straight playoff win over me in the last 2 seasons.

INJURIES:

ANAHEIM: Beleskey, Beauchemin out
COLUMBUS: None

GOALIES:

ANAHEIM: Hiller
COLUMBUS: Dekanich

I was able to come out and establish some tempo early, which culminated in an early lead. At 3 minutes Brassard slid a pass to Johnson in front, and he deftly beat a double team and Hiller to make it 1-0 Jackets:

Posted Image

The rest of the period was a blur. There was virtually no offense to speak of and there were very few stoppages. It was a true stalemate the rest of the way, as both goaltenders had little to do and both defenses imposed their will without heading to the penalty box. After one very quick period, it was 1-0 Jackets, with shots at 6 apiece and faceoffs at 6-5.

Posted Image

Play didn’t really open up any more to open the second, as both defenses kept the clamps down very tightly. At 3 minutes of this period, Byers got a little too aggressive and was given the gate for hooking, and the Ducks had the game’s first power play:

Posted Image

In the Nashville series, my PK was one of the 2 or 3 biggest keys to the series, along with the play of Dekanich. Both failed in this instance, as just 13 seconds into the PP Getzlaf stole a puck in a scrum and fired a backhander towards the net, which Dekanich made a mess of to tie the score at 1:

Posted Image

With the score level I again had to target not being behind entering the third. So the defenses were on display again for the rest of the period. At 15 minutes Cogliano got whistled for hooking, and I finally had my first man advantage:

Posted Image

Unfortunately I could get virtually no pressure on the net, and a couple of more minutes brought a quick end to a frustrating second period. The score was tied at 1-1, with shots at 9-7 Jackets in the period and faceoffs sitting at 11-7 for the game thus far. Anaheim forged a victory on points in the period, but the biggest goal I had, not being behind entering the third, I did manage to achieve, so for the second game in a row the final 20 minutes (or 20 + OT) would decide it.

Posted Image

This is a playoff game that never opened up offensively, because the defenses dominated the third period as well. At the 6 minute mark Tyutin took a hooking call, forcing the crowd to hold their breath for 2 minutes of pressure-packed PP time:

Posted Image

This time I held them at bay, and as we hit the halfway point it was still anyone’s game and we were at full strength. The big moment of the game came with less than 4 minutes to play. Bobby Ryan did some nice puck work along the boards and threw a pass in front to Getzlaf, who expertly beat the tender and the defense with a precision backhand to give the Ducks a dramatic 2-1 lead:

Posted Image

As we got to the final minute, I pulled the goalie in an attempt to increase the offensive pressure with a 6th attacker. Not surprisingly it backfired, and the Ducks got 2 late empty-netters, including this one along the boards, to make the final tally 4-1:

Posted Image

The Ducks celebrated in front of a stunned crowd as they took a virtually insurmountable 2-0 lead on the road, and won their 6th straight over me:

Posted Image

Shots were again 9-7 Jackets in the third, but the Ducks got 3 goals. Shots ended up 24-20 for the game, with faceoffs at 17-13, both in favor of the Jackets. The Ducks were 1 for 2 on the PP while I was 0/1.

Posted Image

Well for the second game in a row I was right there at the end, and for the second game in a row I came up agonizingly short. The 4-1 score obviously belies the closeness of this game, as it was tied with 4 minutes to play. This was a real backbreaker, as a 2-0 deficit isn’t the end of the world on the road, but is a killer at home. I am certainly not conceding and my fighting spirit is still good, but after these 2 heartbreaking losses and my inability to notch a single win over the Ducks in 2 years of playoff games, one wonders if my goose is cooked. All I can do is get back out and get and them again in Anaheim, which I will do next time out. Until then, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where heartbreak struck the home fans again, with the final score of Anaheim 4, Columbus 1.

Oh :bad: Anaheim seems to be difficult against you.

Good luck to game 3, can't lose this one :)

Western Conference Semifinals: Game 3
Columbus at Anaheim

Here is what the playoff tree looks like going into game 3:

Posted Image

You can see that Detroit pulled one back on San Jose, while Philadelphia took the lead over Tampa and Montreal has a 2 game advantage on Buffalo.

Posted Image

After enduring 2 heartbreakers in Columbus, I took to the ice for Game 3 in Anaheim with a me-against-the-world attitude. Obviously it goes without saying that I needed to win this game to have any hope of salvaging the series, as going down 3-0 would pretty much end it. So against that backdrop I entered a building where I had some success during the regular season, but lost both games in the playoffs last year. My big move was to switch goaltenders. Dekanich was lights out in the opening series after coming in for Game 3, so I was hoping to strike lightning in a bottle twice by going back to Sanford here. It was a big gamble, but I had to do something and the save % of Dekanich wasn’t all that good in the first 2 games. So it was off to the Honda Center to see if I could pull one back and get back in the series, or if the Ducks could start looking ahead to the finals.

INJURIES:

COLUMBUS: None
ANAHEIM: Beleskey, Beauchemin out

GOALIES:

COLUMBUS: Sanford
ANAHEIM: Hiller

In the first 10 minutes of this one, the home side dictated the play but I hung tough and didn’t allow any goals. Sanford was especially strong as the turn to him looked promising early. At 13 minutes I was able to shock the home crowd and strike first. Umberger circled the net after getting a nice feed from Brassard on the wing, and he then fed it to Pahlsson in front, and the steady center banged it home to give me a 1-0 lead in front of a heavily partisan crowd:

Shortly after this, the remainder of the first period became a special teams chess match. Alternating penalties over a 4 minute stretch basically set up a series of abbreviated power plays and 4-on-4 situations:

Posted Image

The end result of all of this was good for me, because it was nothing. No goals were scored and in fact very few shots were taken, so as the horn sounded for period 1, my 1-0 lead held up despite being outshot 10-7. Faceoffs were even at 4, and I had my share of the puck, so if I could keep things up, I thought I might have a fighting chance.

Posted Image

The second period was just amazingly fun to play from a game standpoint. There were very few stoppages and there were no penalties. Defenses were running the show, so there were a lot of clearances and line changes, and since I had the lead, all of that played into my hands. My defense was good, puck movement was good, and Sanford was good, so the second period flew by, and the horn sounded before I knew it. After 2 periods, I had made my 1-0 lead hold up. Shots were just 6-4 Jackets in the period, and faceoffs were 4-3 Ducks, so it was very even and I was ahead going into the pivotal third. If I could just hang on for one…more…period…

Posted Image

Five minutes into the third, the game took a dramatic turn. Johansen got the puck along the wing and weaved into the zone against ultra-aggressive defenders. He swept toward the boards and fired a pass in front, which found the stick of Derek Dorsett, who one-timed it in to perfection to give me a 2-0 lead in front of a stunned crowd:

Posted Image

Another 5 minutes went by in a defensive battle, and at the halfway point the Ducks began to panic and go for broke. With 8 minutes to go I could taste it, but the Ducks were not cooked yet. On a hard push into the zone, Lydman put a hard shot on net, and the rebound bounced right to Getzlaf, who deposited it in short order to cut the lead to 2-1 with 8 grueling minutes to go:

Posted Image

Surprisingly I was able to control the puck some, play keepaway, and keep getting fresh lines out there. As time wore down the Ducks were looking for one final push, and with a minute to go they made it. They pulled the goalie for the 6th attacker and proceeded to go all out in every conceivable sense. I got the puck cleared a couple of times, but it was icing and the faceoff came right back. They hammered a couple of big shots at Sanford, but he turned them both away. Time seemed to stand still as the clock didn’t seem to be moving. With 15 seconds to go the Ducks got the puck in front, but Wisniewski saved the day with an interference minor:

Posted Image

It was the best thing that could have happened, because even though it was 6-on-4, I was able to clear the puck without icing. I got ahold of it and Nash sent it skyward down the ice, and finally the last excruciating seconds ticked off. My team hit the ice in celebration. Sanford had painted a masterpiece and I was back in the series with a 2-1 win:

Posted Image

Shots were 7-4 Anaheim in the third, just 21-17 for the game. Both teams were 0/2 on the PP, and faceoffs were 13-11 Ducks.

Posted Image

It’s hard to call this a bigger win than Game 7 of the last series, but man this was huge. I was on the road, down 2-0, and playing a team I hadn’t beaten in 6 playoff games. Honestly I can’t believe I held on at the end. Sanford was a great gamble apparently, as he held up spotlessly for 2 periods and the one goal he did give up was just one of those things. I didn’t beat Hiller much and didn’t even shoot much (I don’t think I’ve ever had as few as 17 shots in a game), but I got a couple of great chances in front that I was able to take advantage of. Defensively I have been good all series, so I need to keep up that intensity for sure. Now all of a sudden some pressure is back on the Ducks, because if I can win Game 4, it is back to my place all tied up. Of course if the Ducks get it and go up 3-1 it will mean I have to beat them 3 times in a row, which is highly unlikely. So as important as this game was, the next one is moreso. But that’s playoff hockey. In the meantime, I am going to enjoy this one. For now, goodnight from the Honda Center in Anaheim, where the final score was Columbus 2, Anaheim 1.

My profoundest apologies for stopping where I did, I have gotten swamped with work and life and the video game experience has taken a back seat temporarily. Still, I am now continuing the series, so without further ado...

Western Conference Semifinals: Game 4
Columbus at Anaheim

Here is what the playoff tree looks like going into game 4:

Posted Image

You can see that San Jose is up 3-1 with a commanding lead in the other series in the West. In the East, Philadelphia and Montreal are both one win a way and appear to be on a collision course in the Conference Finals.

After a dramatic 2-1 victory in Game 3, it was on to Game 4 at the Honda Center in Anaheim. The switch back to Sanford worked out in Game 3, giving up just 1 goal, so I stayed with him here in Game 4. Hiller was tough but I was able to get just enough pressure on him and just enough goals to try and think I had a chance of getting back into the series. Still, winning the last one probably won’t mean much if I fall behind 3-1, so this game was just as important. With a bit of momentum and having played 3 games right down to the wire, I didn’t feel like I was all that far off. Still, winning 2 games in a row was a tall order, but if the Ducks could do it…then I was determined I could to. So it’s off to the Honda Center to see if I could even up the series or if I went back home facing elimination.

INJURIES:

COLUMBUS: None
ANAHEIM: Beleskey, Beauchemin out

GOALIES:

COLUMBUS: Sanford
ANAHEIM: Hiller

Things didn’t exactly get off to a rollicking start for my Jackets, as on the first shift of the game Lydman found Perry with a perfect cross-ice feed for a one-timer and a quick 1-0 lead for the home team just 80 seconds into the game:

Posted Image

I got virtually no offense going at all the first half of the period, but my main goal was to stay patient, as falling behind 2-0 would probably be a disaster. So I kept a defense-minded strategy going and held the Ducks in check for the next several minutes. Finally an opportunity on the counter-attack presented itself, culminating in Brassard circling the net and finding Pahlsson in front with a perfect feed for a top shelf one-timer that beat Hiller and tied the game at 1 at the 8 minute mark:

Two minutes later, I turned the tide of the game with the most improbable of leads, as a counter-attack again led to Prospal streaking down the wing, checking up, and sliding a pass to Tyutin in front, who beat Hiller for the second time to put me up 2-1:

Posted Image

The second half of the period was virtually devoid of offense entirely, as both teams really went into a shell. Neither team wanted to give up the next goal, so as a result neither team did much to get the next goal. The period ended rapidly with me holding a 2-1 lead. It was a narrow margin, but it was impressive for me in the sense that the entire period was played 5-on-5 and I was outshot 7-4 in a defensive period but I had still set up 2 perfect shots to take the lead. I was also getting crushed in faceoffs, so despite being on the downside of puck control, I was up heading into the second. I had played a very disciplined period after the opening shift, and given the results, I felt that this was the key to the remainder of the game.

Posted Image

The second period started out with a quick exchange of penalties at 2 minutes, with Pahlsson going for tripping and then Ryan heading off for hooking:

The open ice resulted in a couple of chances for each team, but nothing came of it. At 5 minutes Ryan came out of the box and immediately got whistled again for hooking, and was right back off:

Posted Image

Unfortunately I was unable to take advantage of the power play, as Getzlaf and crew were very good on the rare PK. The next 10 minutes went by much as the second half of the first period did, with the game basically being a defensive stalemate. Both teams could now easily tell that the next goal of the game would have a dramatic impact on the outcome, so both teams knew they wanted it…and also couldn’t give it up. At 15 minutes Perry went off for hooking and I had one more shot at a PP in the period:

Posted Image

The power play was again a source of frustration until late, when Nash entered the zone during a line change, did a quick deke, and then fired a howitzer from the point that beat Hiller to give me a huge 3-1 advantage with less than 3 left in the second period:

Posted Image

In the final minute, Fowler was called for hooking, and I managed to run out the period with the puck so that I would start the third with a complete 2 minute power play. As the horn sounded to end the second, I had a 3-1 lead and a 10-8 shooting advantage in the period. Despite getting killed on faceoffs and playing defense for probably 80-85% of the game, I was remarkably one period away from tying the series and I had a 2 goal cushion and a power play to start the third. I had an optimistic view heading into the final period.

Posted Image

Opening the third, I wanted to put the nail in the coffin with the man advantage, and just 1 minute in I was able to strike. Some great puck movement led to a pass from the corner by Carter, which found Umberger perfectly in front for a one-timer that beat a defensive screen and gave mea 4-1 lead with less than 19 minutes to go:

Posted Image

Now it was really time to play defense and protect the lead, as I had the advantage of good goaltender play to this point and a good defensive game thus far, meaning I really didn’t have to change my strategy much. Plus with a 3 goal lead I could make them come to me and I could try and counter-attack. As you might imagine though, this touched off a period of “all-in” by the Ducks as the completely abandoned playing defense to push hard into the zone and they were aggressive at the red line when I tried to push back. Still for the next 12 minutes they basically played right into my hands, as I kept fresh guys on the ice, stayed out of the box, and gave up a few shots from distance but was always there to clear rebounds. Then at 13 minutes, Fowler found Selanne deep at the post, and he slid a shot that went 5-hole to beat Sanford and made the game quite a bit more interesting at 4-2:

Posted Image

By this time my offense had been completely neutralized, so it was pretty much the case that 4 goals had better be enough. I did manage to push the puck into the zone a couple of times after this, which made the Ducks chase and killed time off the clock. Before we knew it, we were in the final minute and I could taste victory. Unfortunately, the Ducks weren’t done yet, and with 23 seconds to go Ryan found Perry in front for a crashing one-timer to the post that beat Sanford and caused it to be nail-biting time with the score at 4-3:

Posted Image

The Ducks got the puck off the faceoff and made one last push, but Wisniewski intercepted a pass and cleared the puck slowly along the boards, which preserved the victory. As the horn sounded, I had barely hung on, but hang on I did to even the series at 2, much to the jubilation of the visiting Jackets:

Posted Image

Shots were 14-6 Ducks in the third, 29-20 overall. I was 2/4 on the PP and held them to 0/1, so special teams played a huge role despite there not being that many chances. Faceoffs were owned by the Ducks, 21-8.

Posted Image

In the playoffs it’s not how you win, just that you do, so against that backdrop this was a real coup for me. After being wiped out of the playoffs by this team last year and then losing the first 2 at home this season, I battled back to swipe 2 in Anaheim to even the series and send it back to Columbus at 2-2. Sanford was great again for 50 minutes and the final couple of goals were really a product of me getting no offense going more than anything else. Still I fought off the Ducks all game and held on when I needed to. I now have all the momentum heading back to Columbus, so I hope to be able to put the pressure squarely on Anaheim with a Game 5 victory. Until then I am going to enjoy the results of this one from the Honda Center, where the final score was Columbus 4, Anaheim 3.
