Charter Member Posts: 391 Group: Members Member #38 Joined: April 6, 2011	Game 4: Colorado at Columbus Well after crashing back to earth by being humbled by the Canucks, I stayed at home to face the Colorado Avalanche, who were 1-1 entering the contest. The Avs are one of those teams that�s sort of hard to figure, good one game, terrible the next, but I expect they�ll be competing for the lower tier of playoff spots at the end of the season. I shifted around my PP lines, moving Brassard up to #2 and moving Carter line #1 to reunite the entire top line. Hopefully that will spark some magic for what has been an abysmal man advantage unit thus far. Johansen was back in at C as well, replacing Mayorov at the wing, with MacKenzie shifting over. With that, off to the Nationwide Arena to see what happened. INJURIES: COLORADO: None COLUMBUS: None GOALIES: COLORADO: Varlamov COLUMBUS: Mason The first half of the opening period was pretty standard fare: reasonable puck movement, plenty of stoppages for offsides, a few shots, but mostly from distance. Nothing terribly exciting happened until Galiardi was whistled for hooking at the halfway point, allowing me to debut my revamped #1 PP line. In about one minute, the improvement was discernible, as Carter circled and found Nash with a nice pass, which he banged in on the backhand to make it 1-0 Jackets: For the next 5 minutes or so, the game was back to being a pretty standard affair, until at the 17 minute mark Mason got the puck and shot it out to the wing�unfortunately completely missing Yip, who was camouflaged by a defender. The puck went right to him, and he drilled it in before Mason could react to tie the score at 1 with a cheapie: The remainder of the period passed uneventfully and at the break the score was tied. Shots and faceoffs were 9-5 Avalanche, but at least I had taken advantage of my PP opportunity. The action started quickly in the second, as Mueller was whistled for hooking less than a minute in. Once again the top line was able to take advantage, this time with Prospal corralling a loose puck and firing it to Carter, who blasted a perfectly timed one-timer high side past Varlamov to give me back the lead 2-1: After a couple of minutes of regular play, the refs became whistle happy, starting at the 8 minute mark as Stastny got whistled for hooking. I got some good offensive pressure, but was unable to score. Literally right after that penalty ended, Wilson got called for elbowing, putting me right back on the man advantage. Unfortunately my lines were tired, and I didn�t have the speed to chase the puck down quite as well as I did the first 2 or 3 PPs. About 90 seconds in, Umberger got whistled for a cheap interference penalty, and it was 4 on 4: I killed off the penalty with relative ease, though I did give up a handful of shots. Just as things were getting back to even strength, O�Byrne was whistled for a penalty on Nash, again putting the special teams out there towards the end of the period: The ensuing power play was maddening, as I had several great chances to extend the lead, but Varlamov stopped them all, a couple of which were point blank. As the period ended, I was heavily frustrated, and the game just sealed it with a kiss as O�Byrne found Johnson with a cross-ice pass that should have never gotten through for a one-timer that tied the game at 2 with just 3 seconds left in the period: Shots were 13-9 in a period I really felt I should have done better in. The tying goal was doubly annoying because it was the second cheap goal of the game for the Avs. So, despite having a ton of power play time but getting worked in the faceoff circle, I was right in it with a tied game going into the final stanza. The third was more like a playoff game, with both teams playing defensive-minded hockey and trying not to give up the cheap odd man rush. We settled in for a long period of scrapping with each other, but at the halfway point Stastny was whistled for hooking and I had a golden opportunity to take the lead: I was thwarted again by good goaltending and timely pass interceptions, however, and two minutes flew by and I was again at even strength. Shortly afterwards I was whistled for a penalty of my own, and the Avs had their chance up a skater. I killed the penalty fairly easily though, as Pahlsson and Dorsett did some nice red line work. The rest of the period elapsed without much fanfare, and as the final whistle sounded, each team had secured a point and I was headed to OT for the second time already this season. Shots were 10-8 Jackets in the third, but few of those were really good opportunities for either side. I came out completely flat in OT, and it seemed like only a matter of time before Colorado cashed in. I was completely unable to get the puck up ice, and after just over 2 minutes Yip took a deflected puck straight off a faceoff in my zone and jammed it past Mason for the game-winner, touching off a big celebration for a hard-earned road win: Shots were 2-1 in OT and 32-25 Avs for the game. I held them to 0/2 on the PP and refreshingly cashed in on 2 of my 6 chances, though I felt I left a couple of goals on the ice. I got worked on faceoffs 29-10 and didn�t pass the puck well at less than 70%. Hard to know how to feel about this game, on one hand I was ticked that they scored the cheap goals, but on the other I didn�t play very well and was fortunate to escape with a point. Either way they are a scrappy bunch and found a way to grind out a win, and I am going to have to do a better job of that going forward. Next up is Dallas, who is off to a fast start, as I begin to really hit the road for the first time this season. Charter Member Posts: 391 Group: Members Member #38 Joined: April 6, 2011	Game 5: Columbus at Dallas After playing 3 of the first 4 at home, it was back on the road to Dallas to face the resurgent Stars. Dallas didn�t have a lot of positive pre-season publicity, but they are off to a 3-0-1 start and lead the Western Conference with 7 points. I reshuffled my lines to try and jumpstart the offense, activating Giroux (like the real Jackets did) and Mayorov and sending Atkinson and Johansen back to the bench for this one. Also Russell was back on D and Methot took a seat to keep Savard in the lineup and rotate some of the defensemen a bit. The biggest change is that Mason was fatigued so Sanford has to make his first start in goal. Because of that, I decided to take a defense-first posture to try and limit the number of shots he had to face. Did it work? To the American Airlines Center in Dallas for the answers. INJURIES: COLUMBUS: None DALLAS: Dowell out GOALIES: COLUMBUS: Sanford DALLAS: Lehtonen Sure didn�t take long to see how Sanford was going to do, or if my decision to limit the shots was necessary. Less than 40 seconds in, Ribiero found Morrow for an easy tap-in off a rebound to give Dallas the immediate 1-0 lead: For the rest of the period, I tried to pretty much stay in the game, which I was able to do, but I didn�t do much else. I was holding my own on face-offs, but I didn�t get many good chances at net and I there wasn�t a lot of physical play either. The rest of the period flew by, and at the end of one very quick period, there were no penalties, only 12 shots (7-5 Dallas) and it was 1-0 Stars. I had some hope I could stay in the game with even adequate goaltending play. Just a minute and a half into the second, however, it was obvious I wasn�t going to get that either. Burish put a routine puck on net, which Sanford inexplicably turned right to Fiddler instead of holding, and Fiddler deposited it 5-hole to double the lead to 2-0: 90 seconds later the refs realized they hadn�t done anything yet, so at the 3 minute mark they whistled Carter for hooking and then got Ott 3 seconds later, giving each team a gigantic 3 second power play chance apiece: Nothing like padding the PK stats with those. The 4-on-4 didn�t produce anything either, so the game was in a lull for about 3 minutes. At the 6 minute mark, Robidas was whistled for hooking from behind to break up a scoring chance, and I had a legit chance to score this time: For a minute I worked the puck around pretty well on the power play, and finally Carter found Prospal for another top line goal, which cut the lead to 2-1 and got me back in it at the 7 minute mark: That lasted for about 7 minutes of back and forth hockey, and then Sanford took over at the 14 minute mark�in Dallas� favor, that is. First, on a routine line change, Fiddler entered the zone and hit a slapper that any goaltender should have stopped. Sanford apparently isn�t any goaltender, however, and the resulting goal made is 3-1: I was trying to hang on down to heading into the third, but Sanford struck again. This time he made an initial awkward save off of a routine slapshot, but it deflected off of about 2 people and haplessly went into the net, securing a 4-1 lead for Dallas heading into the break: It was a second period where I was outshot just 9-5, 16-10 on the game, but I was now down 4-1 and had basically no hope of recovering. I was still holding my own on faceoffs and on defense in terms of shots allowed, but the terrible goaltending was killing me. In the third I had to take some chances to get forward, but 5 minutes in they put the game away, as Daley found Morrow for another routine shot that Sanford made look like an Al Iafrate slapper, making it 5-1 and making this a �play it out� period: So that�s how both teams began to treat it, with a puck dump here, a line change there, and an occasional shot here and there as well. At the halfway point I pulled one back, as Carter dumped in and eventually Prospal got a nice feed for his second of the game (and Carter�s second point), making it 5-2: The final penalty in what was a fairly whistle-free game came at the 11:30 mark, as Giroux was whistled for holding: Sanford didn�t even pretend to try and stop anything on the ensuing power play, as a bit of puck movement to creates some space resulted in an Eriksson slapshot from the point that easily beat Sanford and made it 6-2: At this point I figured what did I have to lose, so at the 12:30 minute mark I dropped the gloves for the first time all season, as Dorsett challenged Dallas banger Godard to a brawl. I actually got quite a few good shots in, but in the end the big brawler Godard got the best of it and put me down for the count: After the fight things were more or less uneventful. There were very few shots as we were basically just playing it out, and mercifully the game was finally over, as Lehtonen had an easy win to improve Dallas to 4-0-1: Shots were just 8-4 in the 3rd, 24-14 for the game. Each team was 1 for 2 on the power play (and the other was only 3 seconds) and I actually controlled faceoffs 20-13 and didn�t pass the puck all that badly. I was done in by horrible goaltending though, as Mason would have stopped at least 23 of those 24 shots. Not much good to say about this game, except for the fact that I was able to execute the gameplan I set out to execute, mainly playing defense and limiting the shots. I�m not getting a lot of calls, so I am not getting a lot of man advantage chances thus far, so my shooting and scoring are really suffering. Sanford is absolutely horrible, as I sent him down immediately after the game and will now try and find someone, anyone, who can play better than that. Next up is Dallas again at the back end of a home-and-home tomorrow night, and with mason back I think I�ll shake things up a bit more to see what kind of pressure I can generate. The top line is playing well, and Carter leads the league in points, but other than that my bottom 3 lines are awful thus far and have generated next to nothing offensively. Charter Member Posts: 391 Group: Members Member #38 Joined: April 6, 2011	Game 6: Dallas at Columbus So after getting stomped in Dallas, Mason was back in net and I was at home for the back end of the home-and-home with the Stars. Dallas entered at 4-0-1 and still leading the Western Conference, while I entered at a 2-2-1 clip. I made some significant changes to the lineup, re-inserting Methot on defense and sitting Martinek for Johnson, and up front I put Boll in the game for some more physical presence, moving him to the checking line with Pahlsson and Dorsett. Giroux was still on line 2 and I also put him on PP line 2, and I was hoping to get something out of my third line, which has been a revolving door and this game contained Calvert, MacKenzie, and Brassard. So it was off to the Nationwide Arena to see if I could salvage something out of the mini 2 game set. INJURIES: DALLAS: Dowell out COLUMBUS: None GOALIES: DALLAS: Lehtonen COLUMBUS: Mason It didn�t take long for me to be behind the proverbial 8-ball again, as on the opening shift the Stars got the puck deep and Morrow picked right up where he left off, scoring from a pass by Robidas to make it 1-0 just 61 seconds in: I was determined not to let this one get away from me though, so with Mason in net I pushed the puck forward and took some early chances. This paid off just 2 minutes later when Methot found Vermette after some good puck movement at center for an all-to-rare goal by the second line at even strength, knotting the game at 1 at the 3 minute mark on a blistering slapper: For the next 10 minutes things were relatively quiet, and then the refs started getting involved. First, Russell was called for obstruction on a vicious board hit, putting me down a man at around the 12 minute mark: As I was killing the penalty I saw open ice and a loose puck about a minute in on a line change, so I decided to go after it. Unfortunately I drew a hooking penalty on Pahlsson, putting me down 2 men for a full minute: My PK has been surprisingly good thus far, so despite giving up some good shots, I was able to kill off all 3 minutes of both penalties successfully, which really frustrated the Stars, as Ott took a penalty of his own right at the end of the sequence with 4 to go in the period: I peppered Lehtonen with shots for 2 minutes, but was unable to get it past him again, and the final 2 minutes of the period then went by quickly. At the end of 1, it was a 1-1 tie game, shots were 9-8 Jackets, I was down 7-3 in faceoffs and both teams had killed off penalties successfully. In the second things really got ugly, as Dallas became hyper-aggressive and drew a ton of whistles. The first occurred barely a minute in, as Fistric was whistled for holding: As the ensuing power play waned, I was finally able to do something, as Prospal slid a perfect cross-ice feed to Nash, which he hammered in to make it 2-1 Jackets 3 minutes in: Then things really got out of control. Ribiero then took a roughing minor on a vicious boarding hit from behind on Tyutin: I retaliated with Clitsome, quickly ending my own popwer play with a roughing minor, but then just 2 seconds later Ott took an interference penalty off the face-off, and it was 4-on-3. After all of that, I got a couple of good shots off but couldn�t put it in the net, and then a new sequence began, as Fiddler took a hooking minor at the 7 minute mark: Dallas managed to kill that off, and immediately Benn was called for hooking at the midway point: Nash, Ribiero, the Robidas�the trek to the box was never-ending for the rest of the period. At the end of all of it I had failed to score on a bunch of power play chances (not the least of which was because my lines were dead tired) and I had only managed to build a 2-1 lead despite a 14-5 shot advantage in the period and dominating face-offs as well. For the first 5 minutes of the third, things went back and forth, but thankfully there was a short spell with no penalties. We finally got some puck movement going, and it all culminated at the 6 minute mark for me when Umberger found Carter for his league-leading 11th point to make it 3-1 Jackets: 2 minutes later Dallas headed to the box one more time, and I was hoping to put the game away. Yet Lehtonen turned away shot after shot and I was unable to do so. So I played defense and kept fresh lines out there, which worked well as the period waned. However, at the 17 minute mark, I got caught hooking trying to clear a puck, and Dallas had one last chance to get back in it: My PK work was excellent as it has been all season, however, and I turned away the Stars with some good goaltending and timely clearances with just a half minute to go. However, Dallas had my tired line still out there and refused to relent, and with 25 seconds left, Eriksson put in a Mike Gartner special in heavy traffic to cut the lead to 3-2 with just seconds remaining: In their flurry to get the puck off the faceoff Dallas took one last penalty with a cheap high stick, effectively ending the game: When the horn sounded Mason and the Jackets celebrated a hotly contested and badly needed win: Shots were 12-9 Dallas in the third, 32-25 Jackets overall. I took control of faceoffs in the second 2 periods to end with a 25-15 advantage. Special teams dominated this game, but neither team did much up skaters, as I held Dallas to 0/4 but was just 1/10 myself on several abbreviated chances in what was a brutal and choppy game. This was certainly a nice win to get, but I still don�t have a lot of answers about what line combinations work, other than the top line. None of my bottom lines have played well and far too often I find myself scrambling for a puck or chasing it back down towards my own net. Boll actually helped this game, so I think I�ll leave him in there, but I might have to re-shuffle the lower 3 lines yet again to see if I can get something going. The defense played better this game but then again so did the goaltender. This was an important win for me to get as I head back on the road for a stretch, starting in Detroit, where the Red Wings are 4-0-0 and destroying everyone in their path thus far. I�ll be taking a careful look at my lines and seeing what I can do, because that game is going to be a monumental challenge, as it always is. Charter Member Posts: 391 Group: Members Member #38 Joined: April 6, 2011	Game 7: Columbus at Detroit So after splitting a pair with the Stars, it was back on the road for a pair this weekend, starting off with a trip to venerable Hockeytown USA to play the Detroit Red Wings, a member of the Original 6, a division archrival, and the gold standard by which hockey franchises are measured. Thus it was no surprise that they entered the game 4-0-0 and had little trouble garnering maximum points this far on the year. Playing the Wings isn�t tough strategically, you have to break up their puck movement, stay out of the box, and hope Howard has a bad day�the problem is it is really hard to do any of those 3 things, much less all of them. So I messed with my lines a bit more (Johnson on the PP, Dorsett up to the second line, Brassard and Giroux down) and stuck Mason back in there to see what I could do. Off to the Joe Louis Arena, where the action took place. INJURIES: COLUMBUS: None DETROIT: None GOALIES: COLUMBUS: Mason DETROIT: Howard Well I decided to just go out there and go for broke, so I took control of the puck early (after the faceoff, I barely won any of those, as is the norm with Detroit) and pushed forward. After one line change the second group was out there, and Dorsett worked for the puck and slid a pass to Vermette, who hit a shot that surprisingly went through the wickets of Howard to give me an early 1-0 lead 2 minutes in: After the questionable goaltending, I decided to keep pushing ahead, as it seemed like I might be able to strike quickly to establish a lead. I gave up a couple of shots, but Mason turned them away with no problem, and at the 5 minute mark in transition between lines 1 and 4, Pahlsson found Prospal streaking into the zone, and he hammered a slapshot past a confused Howard to double the lead to 2-0: Howard really looked off now, so I tried going in for the kill. I generated some more good chances over the next 5 minutes, but as is often the case, that extra aggression can also cost me, as Carter headed to the box for hooking at the 11 minute mark: My kill has been good all year thus far, which has helped get me off to the 3-2-1 start I have, but this time Franzen took the puck right off the faceoff, struck a shot, then tapped in the rebound, scoring in just 4 seconds to cut the lead to 2-1: I was still convinced that I could make something happen in the remainder of the period because of Howard�s shakiness, so I kept pushing. Finally at the 16 minute mark, my top line struck again, as Nash found Carter for a rifling backhander to make it 3-1 heading into the first intermission: As the period ended, a shellshocked Wings team headed into the dressing room down 3-1 on home ice. Howard was shaky at best in net, and I kept the pressure on and off of my own netminder, and I hadn�t allowed the kind of dazzling passing the Wings are known for either. Shots were 8-7 Detroit in the first, but I had the clearly better chances, and had taken advantage. Now the question was what would happen in the second, as Detroit came back out with a vengeance. Surprisingly, though, the Wings came out relatively passively again to open the second, which played right into my hands. I took control of the puck early and pushed ahead, and just 2 minutes in Pahlsson found a cutting Tyutin for a one-timer in traffic that beat the suddenly mortal Howard to give me a commanding 4-1 lead just 22 minutes into the game: At this point I had a decision to make. Detroit was reeling, and likely to get aggressive. So did I keep pushing ahead, or lay back and wait to see what they did up a bunch? Well, I kind of did both, as I pushed the puck but made sure not to crash the zone with too many players, and Detroit made the decision for me, as they began a parade to the box over the next 10 minutes by being hyper-aggressive. The deficit seemed to really irk former Blue Jacket Mike Commodore, who started the festivities with a roughing minor right after my goal: After that shove in the back, I was on the man advantage. I actually worked the puck very well and got some good shots, but Howard all of a sudden remembered who he was and made some tough saves, turning me away. 2 minutes after it ended, Detroit started building but Lidstrom took a penalty with a vicious hit along the boards, putting me back up a man: The power play was a carbon copy of the last one, with good scoring opportunities aplenty but no goals, leading me back to 5-on-5. No sooner had that ended though that Commodore got back into the act with an elbow that put me right back up a man at the halfway point: This time I got caught being a little to aggressive myself, and when I crashed the zone and gave up an odd man rush, Carter took the hook and headed to the box, ending the advantage: This time the Wings were on a brief power play, and though they didn�t score, they did push the momentum back their way, and started generating more shots. However at the 14 minute mark Helm took a stupid holding penalty right in front of the referee, squashing the comeback attempt yet again: My power play continued to struggle, but even though I wasn�t scoring, it did serve to keep me up a man and keep Detroit from working their magic for a comeback. Every time they might seem to get anything going, they were headed back to the box this period. They killed off the penalty, and headed into the break down 4-1, but Filppula took another penalty as time expired, putting them in a hole again to start the third. When it was all over I had outshot Detroit 13-8 in the period and scored the only goal, so though Howard was playing much better it would take a miracle for the Wings to make the full comeback here. Detroit killed the penalty with little difficulty to start the third, and at this point I did start playing a more defense-oriented game. I figured the Wings were going to have to beat me, I wasn�t going to help them with odd man rushes and short lines on changes. For the first 10 minutes of the period I did pretty well with that strategy, blocking shots and clearing the puck. At the 12 minute mark Wisniewski took a penalty for hooking and Detroit had one more chance to get back in the game: However after the first embarrassment the kill lines, especially Dorsett and Pahlsson, were working well, and I turned away a couple of good opportunities and Mason made a couple of good saves. With 5 minutes left to go, it was clear I had the game in hand, so I began to ice it away. As a parting shot to my division foe, Dorsett found the defenseman Martinek with a nice pass from in front of net for a missile from distance, which beat Howard and made the final tally a rather humiliating (for Detroit standards) 5-1: When the horn sounded Mason and the Jackets celebrated one of the most improbable wins of my 3 seasons playing this game. I had beaten Detroit last year, but the games were all close and I gave up some goals. In this one I not only scored a bunch but the vaunted Wing offense never got going, and I really had a beatdown win I wasn�t expecting at all: Shots were 11-7 Detroit in the third, 27 apiece overall. I was 0/5 on the PP but held them to 1/3, which is a victory given how they can move the puck. I got worked in the faceoff circle 22-6, but with Detroit that is not a surprise at all. I was surprised how off Howard was, and I was able to take advantage early and build a lead I would never relinquish: Huge, huge win for me with the Thirds on (I am wearing them for division games) on the road, especially in Detroit. I took advantage of Howard�s off night and Mason played very well for me. I also blocked a lot of shots and prevented rebounds, something that Detroit really feasts on. I also stayed up a man for a lot of the game, which effectively added a defender for me when I was protecting the lead. This lead puts me in great early position as I am tied for the Western Conference lead with 9 points at 4-2-1. The second game of the doubleheader featured Ottawa, where I headed next, trying to continue my momentum. That report will follow shortly. Charter Member Posts: 391 Group: Members Member #38 Joined: April 6, 2011	Game 8: Columbus at Ottawa Well after the shocking win over Detroit it was avoid-the-letdown time in the second game of the doubleheader against the struggling Senators. Ottawa entered with a record of 2-3-2 and without their starting goaltender, who was fatigued, so they turned to Auld. At 4-2-1, I was tied for the lead in the conference with 9 points, but every single team was between 6-9 points in a crazy bunchup, so really any lead is negligible at this point. My biggest decision here was to rest Mason so that I would have him ready for the return game against Detroit on Tuesday, so after the Sanford disaster earlier in the season I turned to Dekanich, an up-and-comer who would hopefully give me some solid minutes and keep me in the game against a weaker opponent. So in a battle of backup netminders, it was off to Scotiabank Place in Ottawa in front of 19,000+ to see if I could sweep the weekend set. INJURIES: COLUMBUS: None OTTAWA: Anderson fatigued GOALIES: COLUMBUS: Dekanich OTTAWA: Auld Unlike the last game, this time it was Ottawa who came out the aggressor and stayed that way throughout the game, both for good and for bad. Early on it helped them, as I was on my heels from the opening drop, and just 3 minutes in the Sens stunned me by striking first, as Gonchar put one off the tender, and Konopka collected the rebound and slid it past, giving the home team a quick 1-0 lead: The Sens stayed aggressive, but 2 minutes later that cost them, as Calvert got wrecked by a double-team, leading to a hooking minor on Lee and a power play for me: I had a lot of good puck movement on the ensuing man advantage. I got several good shots off, and Ottawa made some nice clearances. However I stayed with it, and with seconds left on the power play my lethal top line struck, with Johnson finding Carter, who buzzed a pass to Nash in front for a lightning-fast one-timer and a 1-1 tie 7 minutes in: Just 12 seconds later Michalek was whistled for an obvious hook, putting me right back up a man and seemingly putting me in control of the game: However this time the Ottawa kill was up to the challenge, and despite a couple of decent chances I was turned away. 2 minutes later Neil was in the box for hooking, and I had my 3rd power play of the first 11 minutes. Again the Senators played well and this time actually got some pressure on my net, easily turning away my power play and staying right in the game. Things eased along for a few minutes as we got towards the end of the period. However my �Lethal Line� was at it again as the period waned, with Prospal creating around the net and finding Nash for another one-timer, his second of the period, giving me a 2-1 lead. Giving up this one from a sharp angle was not Auld�s finest moment: At the end of the period, things started getting really chippy. Ottawa was playing very aggressive hockey as they had all period, and Alfredsson took a penalty with just 18 seconds to go in the frame: Right off the whistle on the power play Umberger hooked to try and get the puck on the advantage, taking the penalty just 10 seconds into the man advantage and making it 4-on-4 as the horn sounded. The period was marred by penalties and some sloppy and aggressive play, but in the end I had the advantage on the scoreboard (2-1), in shots (15-9), and in the circle (9-4). It was one of my best offensive periods of the year, and I was anxious to build on it coming out. It became obvious in the second what the strategy of the Senators was, and that was to beat me up all over the ice. They were hooking, checking, banging, boarding, and not really getting called for anything like they had in the first. For about 5 minutes this went on, before I did what any good hockey team does in that situation�try and beat someone up. In a wild sequence around the 6 minute mark, Pahlsson was whistled for hooking, and as the Sens were trying to press the delayed advantage, Boll dropped the gloves with Carkner: The last 10-15 minutes of play had been leading to this, so while the timing was a bit odd perhaps, it needed to happen. I took a few shots early but Boll repeatedly pummeled Carkner to oblivion and downed him with a series of stiff head shots: After all that I had won a fight and was down a man. My kill units were working well, so I wasn�t that worried about it, and as I killed off the seconds the Senators got frustrated and Foligno took a useless penalty with an elbow shot to the head of Nash, eventually putting me up a man after a brief 4-on-4: Just as I was transitioning to the power play, MacKenzie and Clitsome, who were both playing on the kill units, hit the Sens in transition, with Clitsome putting it away from close range for a 3-1 lead 8 minutes in: The next 5 minutes were back and forth, with neither team holding much of an advantage, but clearly the Senators had lost some of their edge. At the 13 minute mark, we had a very embarrassing moment for Auld. I took the puck at the red line, ready to dump it in with Wisniewski and then make a line change. However I slid toward the blue line holding the puck, and as the defender moved forward and screened Auld I let loose a rocket that got by the tender from behind the blue line, making it 4-1 and seemingly ending the day for the Senators: The frustration on the Senator bench was palpable, and when Michalek got whistled for holding a minute later it appeared that this one could be headed for blowout city: However to their credit the Sens fought back and turned me away repeatedly, despite how badly Auld was playing, and as the period waned I was in control but not on easy street just yet. With 2 to go Giroux took a very questionable penalty, and the Sens made sure I had to play 3 periods as Foligno put in a power play goal to narrow the gap to 4-2 heading into the second break: As the horn sounded, shots in the second were 12-5 Ottawa as they really took control on that late power play. I had seemingly missed my chance to blow them out of the water, and they had a touch of momentum heading into the third. I still had my backup netminder in there, so I knew anything could happen. It was clear at the start of the third that the Sens were going all in to narrow the gap. Less than a minute in, however, they would be again killing a penalty, as Condra delivered a vicious hit along the boards: I was once again turned away on my struggling power play, but I did get a couple of good scoring chances. At the 4 minute mark Dorsett took a hooking minor, and this time it was the Sens that had a good chance to draw closer: However my penalty kill was pretty much in control this game, so I fought off another 2 minutes and was back to even strength. Almost immediately, Karlsson took a holding minor, and then Smith got called for hooking, putting me up 2 men for a full minute: For the next 3 minutes I worked the puck and peppered Auld, but he was playing better and the defense was blocking more shots and covering more passing lanes than they had been earlier in the game. Despite the 2 man advantage and the extended power play, I was repeatedly frustrated in my attempts to put the game away. My worst fears were realized when at the 12 minute mark Carkner found Smith, who put up a shot that hit a skate blade and flipped slowly over the goaltender�s outstretched arm for a goal that I could do nothing about, cutting the deficit to 4-3 and putting the Sens right back in the game with 8 minutes still to go: It was a completely fluke goal, but the real problem was I failed repeatedly in my attempts to put the game away, and it was a dogfight until the end now. The Sens were feeling it, pushing hard and playing keep away with the puck. They got a couple of good cross-ice one-timers, but Mason repeatedly turned them away. With a minute left they pulled the goalie, and Martinek got whistled for a quick penalty trying to clear the puck, setting up a 6-on-4 situation for the final 45 seconds or so: However I won the most important faceoff of the game right afterwards, moved the puck up the ice quickly, weaved between desperate Senators and then deposited what was officially a short-handed empty netter to seal the game at 5-3: It was far from pretty, but Dekanich played well enough to win over a weaker opponent and I did just enough offensively to sneak out of Ottawa with a nice victory: Shots were 11-4 Columbus in the third, 31-25 overall. I held them to 1/4 on their PP and was 2/9 on my chances, which percentage-wise isn�t awful but I really needed to cash in more effectively than that to take charge of an ugly game like this one. I controlled the circle 24-14 and kept the pressure on for much of the game, so that was good also after the Detroit game where I couldn�t win any. Well a battle of weaker teams and backup goaltenders isn�t exactly headed to ESPN Classic anytime soon, but these are the kinds of games I need results from, so getting both points was a huge plus. Dekanich was at least competent between the pipes, which is way more than I can say for Sanford, who will never see the ice again for me. So having a decent backup is a good thing, and I think I found one here. Next time out is a home date with a Detroit side feeling bloodlust after being embarrassed at home, so I really need to be careful in that one not to let it get away from me early. If I can stay the course I might have a shot at another W, though 2 wins in a row over Detroit is a tall order. My top line keeps playing lights out, but I am going to need more contributions from the lower lines if I am going to sustain any success.
