Thanks for reading...and yes, I use FRAPS, and I do use the full version, so I don't know if that has anything to do with the photos uploading faster, but it might, as they are saved directly to JPEG now. |

Game 9: Detroit at Columbus Hard to believe we’re up to game #9 and almost to my first segment report. After picking up a pair of wins on the road, I returned home briefly to face an angry Red Wings team hell bent on making my life miserable as payback for the 5-1 drubbing I laid on them at Joe Louis last week. It was their only defeat of the season thus far as they entered the game at 5-1-0. I had built my record to 5-2-1 after the 2 road wins and I was threatening to take over the early Western Conference lead, though everyone is within 5 points of one another thus far. I left my lines as they have been the past 2 games and Mason was back in net looking for a repeat performance of last week’s shellacking. Howard was also back between the pipes looking for some redemption. Hudler is the only player out for either team. I figured if they came out aggressive early I might be able to use that to my advantage, depending on how sloppy the got, but if they weather the early storm on the road and play to their angry potential, I could also be in for a long night. So which was it? To the Nationwide Arena for the answer. INJURIES: DETROIT: Hudler out COLUMBUS: None GOALIES: DETROIT: Howard COLUMBUS: Mason I was expecting the Wings to come out chippy and looking to bang along the boards, but instead I got a period with a more international flavor, which played right into Detroit’s hands. There were very, very few stoppages in the first period and there were no penalties, and few teams can move the puck and put out the depth of lines like Detroit over an entire period of 5-on-5 hockey. Thus their advantage would be established at the 12 minute mark, when good puck movement resulted in Filppula finding Helm for the opener to give the Wings a 1-0 lead: ![]() 5 minutes later, Filppula would put one in himself, this time on a pass from Franzen that led to a screaming one-timer, to make it 2-0 visitors as time waned in the first: ![]() As the horn sounded I was a bit shell-shocked. I hadn’t played badly at all, Mason made a couple of saves, but I was down thoroughly 2-0 to a team that is the best at moving the puck and setting up good scoring opportunities. I actually led in shots 8-7, and there were only 3 faceoffs (Detroit won them all) so play really carried on for long stretches. I decided I had to do something to stir up the tempo some, or the first period indicated I would have no chance at coming back. ![]() So I ramped up the aggression in the second, and it got bowling shoe ugly in a hurry. It was actually Detroit who retaliated and got whistled for a couple of early penalties, the first coming on Eriksson less than a minute in: ![]() I set up a couple of good shots on the power play but was turned away by Howard, who was playing much more like I am accustomed to seeing him in this game. However right as they killed it off, Cleary took a hooking penalty at the 3 minute mark, and I was back in business up a man: ![]() On the ensuing power play, I again generated good pressure and actually got some good puck movement of my own. Late in a shift at the end of the power play, Prospal took the puck deep and found Nash, who banged it home to cut the deficit to 2-1 and get me back in the game at the 5 minute mark: ![]() So with 35 minutes left in the game, 15 in the second period, I was within one. When Stuart took a hooking penalty a minute later, it looked like the momentum was firmly with me and that I had a great chance to draw even: ![]() However the Wings played keep-away with the puck for most of the power play, and before I knew it I was back at even strength without really generating any pressure. It was at this point, the halfway point of the game, where things changed dramatically. First, Tyutin was whistled for holding: ![]() I was down a man briefly, but after a couple of clearances, Franzen was whistled for hooking and we were back to 4-on-4: ![]() Both penalties ended, but shortly afterwards at the 12 minute mark, Johnson lined up a Wing and took a huge run, exploding him into the boards and drawing an obvious whistle: ![]() I killed off the penalty, but the refs began taking an over-anxious look at me for the rest of the game, which would determine the outcome. Right after this kill, MacKenzie was whistled for hooking: ![]() If that wasn’t enough, Wisniewski was whistled on the ensuing kill for…something…and I was down 2 men for a full minute: ![]() Needless to say, the Wings piled on the pressure, and it is next to impossible to stop them down 2 men for any length of time. 30 seconds later Franzen put it in the net to make it 3-1 Wings, and if things didn’t change I was in big trouble: ![]() I was able to desperately kill off the rest of the man advantage, and I considered it somewhat of a victory to only give up one goal in the entire sequence. However, almost as soon as the penalty ended, Pahlsson was whistled for tripping…I guess…and I was right back down a man for the final 2 minutes of the period: ![]() I managed to get to the horn without further damage, but I was clearly hanging by a thread. All of my offensive pressure had disappeared, and I spent all kinds of time in the box with nothing to do but desperately try and clear the puck. Shots were 14-12 Detroit in what had been a wide open and entertaining period, but one that clearly had separate first and second halves. Detroit carried all momentum into the third. ![]() I killed off the rest of the penalty to open the third, but was headed right back to the box 2 minutes in as Carter was called for hooking: ![]() On the power play, White found Holmstrom, and the Wings put the game seemingly out of reach at 4-1: ![]() A couple of minutes later Johnson was back to the box again for a hit along the boards, and the refereeing was getting ridiculous: ![]() Luckilu for me Bertuzzi took a quick obstruction call off the faceoff, and the power play was negated: ![]() The next 5 minutes or so were pretty nondescript, but at the 12 minute mark Detroit started pouring it on, as Helm found Cleary for a shot that beat Mason 5-hole and a diving defender to make it 5-1, the score of the last game in reverse: ![]() With 5 to go, Pahlsson was sent back to the box for tripping again, and I was back down a man for the 9th time in the game: ![]() There were no worries about a long penalty kill, as Datsyk found Franzen off the faceoff and Detroit scored their 6th goal in just 3 seconds: ![]() With the game completely out of hand, it was time to try and leave a mark on the game some other way, so Dorsett dropped the gloves on the ensuing faceoff with Abdelkader: ![]() The fight was pretty one-sided, as Dorsett took out all his frustration and bashed Abdelkader in the skull until he fell: ![]() That was the highlight for me though, as the final 4 minutes ran out uneventfully. Mercifully, it was time to head to the locker room as Howard celebrated some sweet revenge with a 6-1 hammering of the Jackets: ![]() Shots in the period were one-sided at 17-5 Detroit, making it 38-25 for the game. I was ¼ on the power play but allowed Detroit to go 3/9 as I couldn’t keep my kill units off the ice for more than a minute in the final 2 periods and my top center on my kill line was out for 2 penalties himself. I did better in faceoffs this game, with it only being 22-15 Detroit, but it doesn’t help a whole lot when I am always playing with 4. ![]() This was a good old-fashioned divisional beatdown, and Detroit took full advantage of the change in refereeing during the second half of the game. I couldn’t adjust my play well enough, and I never got back in the game after being at 2-1 25 minutes in. If there was a positive it’s that there isn’t any one thing to blame it on, so I can chalk this up as “one of those games” and move on to the next one in Buffalo, where I face another good back side and a great goaltender in Miller. I need to learn how to stay out of the box, especially against a team like Detroit, who has so many skill players. I got outplayed in all phases of this one, so I just need to regroup overall as a team and move back on the road. Until then, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where the final score was Detroit 6, Columbus 1. Game 10: Columbus at Buffalo After the hammering took at home against Detroit I was all too eager to get back on the road and play the next game against the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres entered the game at 4-4-0, an average start in the East, whereas I was 5-3-1 and in a quagmire of teams within 3-4 points of each other in the West. Mason was in net against Miller, which should yield an entertaining goalie matchup, and I activated Ryan Johansen again (Calvert sat) and put him on the wing on the 3rd line and on the power play to try and spark the second line there, as even with Umberger and Vermette the second line has done virtually nothing all season. So I was hoping for a boost in my power play and Johnson continues to play well on defense so he stayed in over Russell. The Sabres have some good defensemen and of course Miller so I figured scoring would be at a premium in this game, so I wanted to play solid defense and maybe get some good chances up a man to try and get myself established. So it was off to the First Niagara Center to see if I could generate some points against a quality Eastern Conference foe. INJURIES: COLUMBUS: None BUFFALO: Gaustad, Stafford out GOALIES: COLUMBUS: Mason BUFFALO: Miller Things got going really early in this one, as Ehrhoff was whistled for hooking less than a minute into the game, giving me an immediate chance to test out the new second line: ![]() The first line was turned away early on the power play, but when the second line got in there thing seemed to pick up some. Sure enough, a minute into the man advantage, Vermette found Wisniewski, who slid a pass to Johnson at the point for a blistering slapshot that whistled past Miller to give me an early 1-0 lead: ![]() I was in pretty good control of this one for the next few minutes, but at the 5 minute mark, Wisniewski chased the puck into my right corner and attempted a clearing pass across the center to the wing. Unfortunately, it went right to Leino, and what was worse is that he one-timed it past a completely unsuspecting Mason for a fluke goal to tie the score at 1: ![]() Despite the mishap I was still playing well and under control, so I didn’t let it bother me much. Over the next 5 minutes I built some momentum, and at the halfway point Myers got frustrated and whistled for hooking: ![]() Despite the quality of the Buffalo defense, I was able to work the puck around well this game. Some good puck movement by the top PP line didn’t result in a goal, but did draw another penalty on Leino, putting me up 2 men for a full minute of play: ![]() The second line came out and I was able to move the puck around quite a bit amongst the forwards. A couple of sharp angle passes led to a great opportunity for Johansen, and he one-timed it in for his first of the season to give me back the lead at 2-1 at the 12 minute mark: ![]() With the penalties over, I looked to keep control of the game. I was able to do so by keeping a solid pace and keeping fresh lines on the ice. As the period waned, I was in full control. However, as the seconds ticked down, the puck started bouncing around in my zone, and somehow Ennis streaked in and one-timed it past Mason with 0.3 seconds left in the period. Yes, less than half a second. This led me into the locker room muttering some words that can’t be repeated here tied at 2: ![]() Shots were 9-8 Buffalo in the first, but I had controlled the pace and they got not one but two fluke goals to keep the score level. My passing percentage was high, I was holding my own on faceoffs, and my power play was working, so I had a pretty good feeling taking the ice for the second period. ![]() In the second the special teams would again play a prominent role, and the goaltenders would begin to take over the game. First at the 2 minute point Roy took a hooking penalty, putting me back up a man early: ![]() Buffalo did a much better job on this kill, and Miller made a couple of awesome saves. They even got a good chance on my net, but Mason turned it away. After being frustrated on the power play is was back to 5-on-5 for a while, and as was the case early in the game, neither team could gain a distinct advantage. I was basically playing defense and biding my time for another power play, which I would get at the halfway point when Regehr stopped a good scoring chance with an interference penalty: ![]() On this power play I didn’t generate much, but Miller made one amazing, stand-on-your-head point blank save to turn away a certain one-time goal. At that point the momentum of the game began to swing in Buffalo’s favor, and they would finally get their first shot with a man advantage at the 15 minute mark when Methot was whistled for tripping: ![]() I had very little difficulty with this kill, as Pahlsson and Dorsett hadn’t played much and were fresh, and also it was difficult for Buffalo to match Nash’s speed to the puck, setting up a couple of important clearances. I killed the penalty pretty easily, but then right after I was done, Nash was whistled and I was down a man again: ![]() This time without him I had a much harder time clearing the puck, as the rest of the lines were tired. Giroux filled in admirably for Nash though and ran interference at the blue line fir a spell, making it hard for the Sabres to get the puck into the net. A couple of saves and a late clearance did the trick, and I was off the ice at the end of the period still tied at 2. Shots were 11-7 Buffalo in the period and we each had some man advantage opportunities, but no damage had been done. This one would be decided in the third and was going to require something special to beat either goalie for the winner. ![]() Both teams came out cautiously in the third, looking for that one sliver of opportunity to steal one and generate a lead, putting the pressure squarely on the other team. I would get the first chance less than a minute in, as Regehr took a rouging call away from the puck and put me back up a man: ![]() This time it would be the first line that got into the scoring column, as Clitsome took the puck on the wing late in a shift and slid a pass to Prospal, who banged in a one-timer to give me a 3-2 lead with 18 minutes to go: ![]() For the rest of the period I was playing keep-away and trying to keep my freshest lines out there, which is a challenge in and of itself. I was able to do pretty well with it though, as I got the puck deep enough often enough that I was able to make frequent line changes. As time wore down, Buffalo began getting more and more aggressive, and with over a minute left they pulled Miller and went for broke on the attack to get the equalizer. I wasn’t able to get anywhere near and empty netter, but I did hold and clear the puck enough that I really kept the pressure off Mason. He only had to make a save or two really in the clutch, which he did and then raised his arms in triumph at the final whistle: ![]() Sots were 27-20 Buffalo in the game but just 7-5 in the third as I was able to slow the pace down and really keep it a red line game for the most part after scoring the go-ahead goal early in the period. Buffalo controlled faceoffs 26-14 but I was over 80% on my passing, which is unheard of for me in this game regularly. I held them to 0/2 on the power play and my revamped second line led me to a 3/6 clip on the man advantage, easily my best showing of the year. ![]() After the first where special teams and fluke goals dominated, the goaltenders took center stage and waged a classic for 2 periods. The good news for me is that I was able to find a way to win and stay out of the box, which was the key to my success later in the game. I also moved the puck well, as Buffalo is a bigger and generally slower team than several of my recent opponents like Detroit. The second power play line got a lift from Johnson and Johansen, and if they can keep producing to go with my Lethal Line, I could be in great shape for a good run at scoring some goals going forward. I still need work on my 5-on-5 situations, but I can survive OK as long as I can score on the power play and if I can keep killing penalties (Detroit notwithstanding). Next up is the first look at another divisional team, Chicago, as I stay on the road into the weekend. Until then, goodnight from the First Niagara Center in upstate NY, where the final score in an entertaining game was Columbus 3, Buffalo 2. So it is now time for the first of what I call "Segment Reports" where I review the progress of the last 10 games. In the first segment, I was 6-3-1, good for 13 points, tied for first in the Western Conference, though every single team is between 10 and 13 points, so it is really anyone's guess as to who will end up where at this stage. Results were: NSH 1, @CLB 3 CLB 5, @MIN 4 (SO) VAN 3, @CLB 1 COL 3, @CLB 2 (OT) CLB 2, @DAL 6 DAL 2, @CLB 3 CLB 5, @DET 1 CLB 5, @OTT 3 DET 6, @CLB 1 CLB 3, @BUF 2 Goals were 30 GF, 31 GA in the segment. My power play was 11/52, good for 21/2% and 2nd in the league. On the PK I was 32/40, 80.0%, good for 28th in the league. In faceoffs, I was 180/379, slightly below 50%. For team leaders, Carter and Prospal lead in goals with 6 each, and Carter leads in Assists with 7. For points, Carter has 13 (6/7) and Prospal (6/4) and Nash (5/5) have 10 each, so all of the forwards on the top line averaged a point a game in the first segment. Wisniewski and Tyutin, 2 defensemen, lead in +/- with +4. For league leaders, Carter is in amongst the leaders in points, as you can see here: ![]() ![]() ![]() The next segment features 6 home games but just 3 division games, and I still won't have seen St. Louis yet through the first 20, though I will have played all other division teams twice. Here is the upcoming schedule: @CHI ANA TOR @PHI CHI WPG MIN @BOS @NSH CAL Hope you have enjoyed the season so far, and stay tuned! |

Game 11: Columbus at Chicago![]() So after a tough win in Buffalo it was another road game at division foe Chicago. This was my first look at the Blackhawks, who entered at 4-3-2 and without Brent Seabrook, but with a couple of players (I believe Hossa and Sharp) on hot streaks, so I knew I would have my work cut out for me. Complicating matters further was the fact that Mason was fatigued, so I was forced to go with Dekanich in a tough divisional road contest. In my rotation of struggling lower line forwards, Calvert was back in for Brassard, but since Johansen showed some promise last game, I left him in there both in line 3 and the PP2 line. Every single team in the Western Conference entered the game holding between 10 and 13 points, so despite my 6-3-1 record I was just a couple of points out of a double digit standings place. This was a big one for both teams, so we’re off to the United Center in the Windy City to see what happened. INJURIES: COLUMBUS: Mason fatigued CHICAGO: Seabrook out GOALIES: COLUMBUS: Dekanich CHICAGO: Crawford The game started as one might expect a division game to begin, with a lot of hitting and not very many shots. Early on, 2 quick penalties were called just after the 3 minute mark, the first on Montador for hooking, putting me up a man, but then quickly on Vermette for hooking, evening things back up in less than 30 seconds: ![]() ![]() The short power plays didn’t generate anything, and the rest of the period went by with virtually no action in front of either net. The defense in this period was really good, as was the hitting at the red line area, so neither team was able to get the puck deep and pressure the goaltender. At the 17 minute mark, the Blackhawks got a rare chance in front, and a deflected rebound went right to Bickell, who put it in with a backhander to make it 1-0 Hawks: ![]() That was it for the first, as the final 3 minutes went by quickly and the horn sounded. The Hawks held a slight edge in shots (5-4) and faceoffs (5-3) in the period, but this was really a draw in the first that didn’t result in a lot of meaningful goal action. The game was there for the taking in the second period as the puck dropped again. ![]() The Hawks came out as the aggressors in the second period, but instead of getting called for penalties, they started drawing them. The first came after 5 minutes, as Johansen was whistled for hooking: ![]() As I was killing the penalty, Martinek was whistled for one of those highly frustrating away-from-the-play interference calls that I couldn’t control, giving Chicago a 5-on-3 for a full minute: ![]() Right about here is where it went from boring to Dekanich stopping pucks left and right. Chicago was getting a ton of cross-ice passes through to the weak side for some reason, setting up one-timers that I had been able to limit in previous games. It might have had to do with the hot streaks of prominent players (Hossa and Sharp), but I’m not sure. In any event I killed off all of the penalties and survived the 5-on-3, only to go right back down a man as Methot was whistled for obstruction off of a faceoff away from the play at around the halfway point: ![]() At this point both of my kill lines were dead red tired, and it didn’t take long for Chicago to take advantage, as a cross-ice pass from Sharp found Hjalmarsson for an easy one-timer past a dead line to double the lead to 2-0 on the power play: ![]() Less than a minute later, Dekanich was the victim of some very bad luck, as a puck off of a faceoff in the zone got tipped and glided slowly across the front of the net, and all I could do was watch helplessly as Lepisto tracked it down and hammered it past a helpless goaltender, giving the Blackhawks a 3-0 lead at the 13 minute mark: ![]() At this point I was getting pushed around by a divisional foe with a combination of bad luck and bad offense, so I tried to change things up. The logical thing to try is a few punches to the head, so Dorsett dropped the gloves with John Scott: ![]() Even this strategy failed because I didn’t actually land any punches to the head. In one of the most lopsided fights I have ever had, Scott easily dispatched Dorsett with a few punches to the gut for the KO: ![]() The final 6 minutes was an offensive overdrive by Chicago. They fired pucks at the tender from all over the place. I couldn’t get control, couldn’t clear the puck, couldn’t pass it, couldn’t do anything. Dekanich held firm though, and as the horn sounded I was actually happy with his play, as he had only allowed 2 in a period where I was outshot 19-5, and even one of those was a fluke goal. I gave up one power play goal but that was only because I had spent minutes and minutes in the box. I was more or less out of this game, but I was still showing some fight headed to the third. ![]() In the third I started to hold my own a bit more. 2 minutes in, I got a power play chance when Brunette was whistled for holding, only to see Tyutin go for hooking 17 seconds later: ![]() ![]() After the penalties were over, Olesz was quickly whistled for hooking and I had my full power play opportunity: ![]() I got 3-4 good chances on the man advantage, but Crawford was fresh having done nothing all day, so he came up with some big saves. Both teams had some chances down the stretch, but as time ran on, it became obvious I had no shot at getting 3 to tie in less than half a period the way the Hawks were playing. With 7 to go I did get on the board to break up the shutout, as many of the readers’ favorite player Prospal got a nice feed from Carter and the Lethal Line struck again, putting in a rebound in traffic: ![]() It was way too little way too late, however, and as time waned and the final minute ticked by, the game was decided. The horn sounded and Crawford was celebrating an impressive performance and the Hawks had dominated this game: ![]() Shots were 11-10 Jackets in the third, but 34-20 Hawks overall thanks to the second period of doom. The Hawks also controlled the circle at 19-10 and held me scoreless on 3 power plays, while they went 1/5. ![]() I didn’t really play badly this game, but I was never in it. Dekanich did give up 3 goals, but I thought he played very well under the circumstances and earned himself another start in the backup role instead of calling up York. The top line hit again for a goal but it was the only offense I mustered all day. I blocked a lot of shots but the Hawks also got a lot of weak side one-timers on cross ice passes. Whatever I did they had an answer for, so I really wasn’t ever in a position to win. It’s back home for the next game against the Anaheim Ducks, who will not be an easy challenge either as I never have any luck against Hiller no matter what the circumstances. Until then, goodnight from the United Center, where the final score was Chicago 3, Columbus 1. Awesome reports as usual... and this particular photo is great... vosto's cybers are simply amazing. PS: Scott is wayyy too much for Dorsett. But then again so is Boll... and every other middleweight or even heavy/middleweight in the league as well. Scott is HUGE. |

Game 12: Anaheim at Columbus![]() Well after another game where I was pretty much worked over by Chicago, I was back home to take on the Anaheim Ducks, a team currently in a 6-way tie in the Western Conference at 6-4-0. At 6-4-1, I was quickly fading fast, as every team is bunched up in the conference and I could find myself out of the top 8 with a loss in this one after being in first 2 games ago. Calvert and Brassard were back in the lineup, with MacKenzie sitting this one out in my lower forward rotation as I continue to see where I can get any production from my lower 3 lines. I’ve always had trouble with Hiller in net, no matter when I have played him, so I knew I had my work cut out for me in this one. The good news is Mason was back in net for me and I thought I had a puncher’s chance of keeping it close. To the Nationwide Arena to see if I could work myself out of my funk. INJURIES: ANAHEIM: McMillian, Fowler out COLUMBUS: None GOALIES: ANAHEIM: Hiller COLUMBUS: Mason It didn’t take long for this one to get going, as Anaheim put pressure on immediately and cashed in at the 2 minute mark, as Smith-Pelly found McGrattan in close for a high percentage one timer that gave the visitors the early 1-0 lead: ![]() Things then continued much the same way, as I had a very hard time clearing the blue line trap to get into the offensive zone. Five minutes after the first goal, the Ducks added another, as Parros took the puck on the wing and slid a perfect pass to a cutting Visnovsky, who banged in a rifle of a one-timer to double the lead to 2-0: ![]() The second half of the period was a long and frustrating attempt for me to get back in it. Anaheim played effective keep-away and chipped the puck and charged a lot, leaving me to have to make a lot of backside line changes without the puck and thus keeping the puck away from Hiller. As the horn sounded, I had been thoroughly outplayed, with the score 2-0 and shots 9-6. I have really had a hard time generating any offensive pressure recently, and that continued in this period. ![]() As the second opened we started to see some special teams play. Unfortunately, most of it went against me. Just 2:30 in, Methot was whistled for cross-checking, and the first power play of the day went to the Ducks: ![]() I gave up a couple of scoring chances, but Mason made a couple of nice saves and a couple of key clearances allowed me to kill the penalty off. However right after getting out of the box and back to full strength, Dorsett this time was whistled for, shall we say, a questionable roughing penalty, and I was right back down a man: ![]() Again I gave up some shots, but I was able to clear the puck and pressure my blue line enough to make sure the shots came from pretty far away. Dorsett then stepped out of the box. Now I really had no interest in fighting Parros, but Corey Perry had his dander up and was trying to pick a fight with me for the last several shifts. Needing a spark and thinking this was too good to pass up, I finally dropped the gloves with Dorsett and Perry: ![]() As badly as Dorsett was mauled in Chicago, he had almost as easy of a time winning this one, as Perry was no match whatsoever: ![]() This however was pretty much the end of the highlights for the period. The next 12 minutes was primarily an exercise in defensive hockey, and though I got a couple of decent looks Hiller was more than up to it, and as the period ended I was still down 2-0. Shots were 12-7 Anaheim in the period, and thus far I had gotten absolutely nothing going. It was clear that if I wanted any chance of staying in the game, I needed to produce something early in the third. ![]() So when the puck dropped for the third, I decided to go for broke. I threw everyone into the zone I could, and started hammering guys along the boards, trying to free the puck and move in for the attack. Early on, this strategy cost me, as Umberger pasted someone into the boards and drew a roughing call at the 3 minute mark: ![]() This was however negated by a tripping call on Beauchemin in the corner seconds later, and the 2 power plays were a wash: ![]() For the next 5 minutes I was burning out my lines chasing the puck, but wasn’t really getting anywhere with it. So I was in the zone in the middle of a line change, and noticed some traffic in front. So Umberger took the puck across the front of the goal, primed, and whistled a backhand that beat Hiller clean to cut the score to 2-1 with 11 minutes still to go: ![]() For the next couple of minutes I snagged the puck repeatedly and got some scoring chances. Then, in transition, Methot was called for a fateful obstruction hooking penalty: ![]() Not only did this kill my momentum, but it ended up leading to the nail in the coffin, as less than a minute later Ryan found Getzlaf for a sharp wrister that beat the goalie and my attempt to block with a defender, making it 3-1 Ducks with just 8 to go: ![]() The disappointment at this result was palpable, as the wind was really drained from my sails afterwards, with the Ducks playing effective keep-away with the puck. Time continued to wane, and it was obvious that the Ducks had this one in control. Somewhat ironically, the top line struck at the very end, as Prospal found Nash, who hit a shot that deflected off of about 4 people before going in with 7 seconds to go: ![]() Believe it or not, I won the ensuing faceoff and got not one, but two good shots in the final 7 seconds to try and tie it up. Hiller had to make a sliding save on the last one, which he did to turn me away as the horn sounded, securing the victory: ![]() Shots were 14-7 Jackets in a third period that I dominated but couldn’t quote even up the score in. I held my own in faceoffs 12-11, and I played well on the PK until the end, where the last of 4 tries really hurt me. I got just one power play chance, and in games like that I will really struggle to score. ![]() After a relatively quick start, I have really struggled since getting hammered at home by Detroit. The top line seems to still come up with about a goal a game, but they have cooled off some and I am still getting nothing from my lower lines. I hate to break the top line up, but I may have to if I can’t get anything from anyone else in this configuration. My PK is still good but I still seem to allow just enough goals on it to keep me about 80% and to cost me games like these. I will have to tighten up those situations as well. It doesn’t get any easier with the surging Toronto Maple Leafs coming to visit on Thursday either. The offense definitely needs to make some strides or I am really going to struggle to make the playoffs. Until then, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where the final score was Anaheim 3, Columbus 2. Game 13: Toronto at Columbus![]() I’m an avid traditionalist, so in using an expansion team, it’s always fun to play against the Original 6. Two of those teams are in my division, but for the ones in the Eastern Conference, Toronto, Montreal, Boston, and the Rangers, I don’t get to see them very often at all. So it was a rare treat to welcome the upstart Maple Leafs to the Nationwide Arena as I was desperate to get back on track. I entered at just 6-5-1, and with all the teams so bunched up I am in danger of falling significantly down the rankings of the Western Conference. Toronto entered at 6-4-2, and those 12 points were enough to put them in the Top 8 conversation in the East. With Methot out with the flu, Russell was back in the lineup on defense, with Johnson moving up to the second line. I was going to sit Dorsett but instead I moved Pahlsson up to the second line, dropping Vermette and MacKenzie down a line each, to try and shake things up. I kept the top line in shape for now, but even that may change if I can’t get it going soon. It was Mason and the Monster between the pipes, so I was anticipating a low scoring affair. How would this one play out? Off to the Nationwide Area, where I was desperately trying to right the proverbial ship, to get the answer. INJURIES: TORONTO: Bozak out; Reimer fatigued COLUMBUS: Methot out GOALIES: TORONTO: Gustavsson COLUMBUS: Mason Quickly it became obvious that the refs were going to be sending a revolving door to the box in this game. Just over a minute in, Prospal was whistled for roughing, but less than 15 seconds later, Kessel followed for hooking, so it was a lot of 4-on-4 time and a harbinger of things to come. ![]() ![]() After the 4-on-4 didn’t produce anything, the next 10 minutes actually went by pretty quickly, as neither team could mount much offensively. I got the better of the run of play in terms of offensive zone time, but the tender was strong and turned away a handful of decent looks. At the 13 minute mark the refs were back. First, Gunnarsson was called for hooking, but then 15 seconds later Schenn was called for tripping along the boards, and I suddenly had an entire 5-on-3 power play: ![]() ![]() As has been the case with every other season I have played, I struggled more with a 5-on-3 than I do with 5-on-4s, though I actually did generate some good scoring chances with some crisp passing. Still the Monster was strong, and even turned away 2 point blank cross-ice one-timers to keep me at bay. With 5 to go I was frustratingly back to 5-on-5 and had missed out on my golden opportunity. It appeared the period would end scoreless as we ticked under a minute, but on one last rush down the ice, Nash took the puck along the wing, deked, and then slid a pass to Prospal in front, who banged a one-timer past the Monster to make it 1-0 heading into the first intermission: ![]() Shots were 13-7 in the first as I really controlled a lot of action. I also had the edge in faceoffs (7-4) and was passing the puck well (83%). All of this however didn’t translate into much of a lead, and I started off the second period still very much vulnerable to a Toronto comeback. ![]() Toronto came out stronger in the second, and over the first 5-6 minutes they got some decent looks and made Mason work quite a bit more than he did in the first. Their quest for the puck led them into trouble, however, as Grabovski was whistled for roughing, giving me another power play chance: ![]() Again I got some looks, but the tender was good and Toronto was bottling up the center of the ice, blocking shots and not allowing me to get my behind-the-net offense going. At the end of the power play a frustrated Rick Nash carelessly hooked in front of the referee, drawing a call and putting me down a man at the 8 minute mark: ![]() It wasn’t long before I was back even again, however, as Phaneuf got a little too aggressive in trying to start a rush and got the hooking call less than 30 seconds later: ![]() The end result of all of this was a stalemate, which resulted in no goals and very few good scoring chances. As we approached the 15 minute mark of the period, things really began to go Toronto’s way. They effectively built up the offense, generating good looks and making me chase the puck side to side. Finally, Armstrong found Komisarek in front of the net, and he beat Mason cleanly with a one-timer to even the score at 1: ![]() So 20 seconds later Giroux was called for interference, and it appeared as though I was out of the game with all the momentum that Toronto was building: ![]() However I fought back, doing good work along the boards to kill the penalty, with Mason making a couple of key saves as well. As the power play waned, a frustrated Leaf team let emotion get the better of them, and Komisarek was called for roughing, followed a minute later by Armstrong going off for hooking, and I had a 5-on-3 situation heading into the end of the second period: ![]() ![]() This power play sequence was horrible. I couldn’t get the puck, couldn’t move the puck, couldn’t generate any shots, and Toronto actually had better chances than I did. So I squandered a golden opportunity heading into the break, with the game remaining tied at 1. I was 0/7 on the PP now, and I had been outshot 13-6 in a period where I actually had a 5-on-3, which is terrible. I was still doing OK on faceoffs, so there was still obviously hope for the third, but my offense continued to struggle mightily. ![]() The first 10 minutes of the third was like a playoff game, with the referee whistles put away and neither team wanting to do anything to give up that one big scoring opportunity. I started to press harder, however, and I started getting some good scoring chances. I was still having a heck of a time beating the Monster, but at least the pressure was off of my own net. At about the halfway point I caught a break as Brown was whistled for hooking, and I was back a man up: ![]() Sadly, I was unable to put one past the tender, and as often happens, after squandering so many opportunities, one is likely to get burned. That happened at the 13 minute mark, as a couple of shots went off the post before Phaneuf put in a vicious backhander to make the score 2-1: ![]() With less than 3 minutes to go, I would get one more chance, as Armstrong was again whistled, this time for hooking, giving me one last power play: ![]() I sent a flurry of shots at the net, but many of them were blocked. I worked the puck around, especially with the top line, and got some good one-time chances, but I couldn’t beat the Monster, as I hadn’t all night. When he held the puck at the end I pulled the goalie, and after making one save the puck was cleared, Armstrong came back on the ice, got the puck, and proceeded to put in the empty netter to seal it with 21 seconds to go. Maddeningly, as the final seconds ticked off and I was just playing the game out, we had a repeat performance of the last game, as down 3-1, I took the puck into the zone and then beat a seemingly invincible goaltender with a garbage-time slapshot to cut the deficit to 3-2 with exactly the same amount of time…7 seconds…remaining: ![]() I heaved one more desperation shot off the faceoff that he easily saved, and as the horn sounded, the Monster celebrated his prey: ![]() Shots were 12-4 in the third for the Jackets, but the Leafs put 2 of theirs in the net. Shots were 31-24 for the game for the Jackets, and I also won faceoffs 26-17. I held them to 0/3 on their power plays, but was a staggering 0/9 on mine, which was the difference in the game. ![]() Yet another game I didn’t play badly, and both netminders played well. Unfortunately my offense from lines 2-4 is so awful that I think Darren Pang could come out of retirement and still shut them out. I’m not sure what to do from here, after a strong 6-3-1 start I am 0-3 and searching for anything to get me going. I have tried different players and no one (Calvert, Giroux, Brassard, Dorsett, Boll, Mayorov, even Umberger) has been able to do anything on the wings. The PK units are pretty decent, but man the offense is bad right now. I’m going to give Cody Bass a look, but he isn’t really an offensive answer. Things don’t get any easier for me either, as I travel to play the Broad Street Bullies, who are currently leading the Eastern Conference, next time out. Until then, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where the final score was Toronto 3, Columbus 2.
