Game 14: Columbus at Philadelphia

Posted Image

A losing streak that reached 3 has left me looking for answers, and they would be difficult to come by in Philadelphia, where the Flyers led the Eastern Conference with a 10-3 record and 20 points. At 6-6-1, I was in danger of losing touch completely with the top 8, so I really needed to get some sort of result in this contest. My best defenseman was out, but Methot was back, so that gave me a bit of a lift, and Russell stayed in there for a second game. In my quest to get any kind of production from lines 2-4, Bass got his first look and Atkinson was back in the lineup, replacing Boll and Brassard. Both top netminders were in, so I was hoping for a low scoring game that I could stay in with a chance at a result in the third period (and not the wreckage that was the actual game the other night). So off to the Wells Fargo Center to see if I could spring my second big upset of the campaign.

INJURIES:

COLUMBUS: Wisniewski out
PHILADELPHIA: Simmonds, Nodl, Carle, Akeson out

GOALIES:

COLUMBUS: Mason
PHILADELPHIA: Bryzgalov

After 5 minutes of relatively slow play, Couturier was whistled for a cheap holding call, and I was on the power play at the 6 minute mark. I was unable to get much going though, and towards the end of the power play, Tyutin took a hooking call, evening the sides at 4:

The Flyers got nothing on their brief power play, and over the next 8 minutes, I was chasing the puck and giving up the run of play, but I kept it out of my net with some good blocks and a couple of key Mason saves. With 5 to go before the intermission, Coburn got called for roughing, and I got one more mad advantage before the end of the period:

Posted Image

This time, it took virtually no time off the faceoff for me to strike, as quick puck movement led to Prospal finding Carter, who scored against his old team to give me a 1-0 lead:

Posted Image

The Flyers got a couple of more chances, but as the first horn sounded, I had a surprising 1-0 lead. Shots were 9-6 Flyers in the period, but I held my own on faceoffs (5-5) and scored on the power play, which is really my only formula for success this season so far.

Posted Image

Philadelphia came out with a vengeance in the second, setting up a couple of early scoring opportunities. I also got a chance or two on the counter attack, but the goaltenders were at their best this evening. About 6 minutes into the second, Tyutin was whistled for hooking, and I was down a man. However just 6 seconds later, Giroux held off the faceoff, and we were back to 4-on-4 very quickly:

The Flyers got a couple of more good looks, but were turned away. The teams would again exchange quick penalties at the end of the initial power play sequence 2 minutes later, as first Nash was called for hooking, the Hartnell was as well just 11 seconds later:

Posted Image

Again the 4-on-4 led to some opportunities for both teams, but this was a defensive game, and it stayed that way throughout. After things got back to full strength, it was more a run of play type game, until Tyutin was whistled for his third penalty of the game, a vicious hit along the boards, with 4 to go in the period:

Posted Image

On the ensuing power play, the Flyers ratcheted up the heat, but were frustrated repeatedly by Mason and a couple of timely clearances. As the horn sounded to end the second, the Flyers had outshot me 14-7, but were unable to close the 1-0 gap, which remained headed to the third.

Posted Image

Eventually, if one gives a good team enough chances, eventually they’ll cash in, so I was apprehensive when Russell blew up a Flyer along the boards and went to the box a tad over a minute into the third:

Posted Image

Sure enough, with a full compliment of power play time, the Flyers finally cashed it in, as Briere found Hartnell for a blistering wrister past Mason to tie the game at 1:

Posted Image

After that, the rest of the period was much like a playoff game, with a sudden-death kind of feel. Both teams had worked so hard to get one goal, neither wanted to do anything to compromise their defense. Time went by pretty quickly in the period, as both teams spent more time protecting the net and changing lines than they did establishing much of an attack. Philadelphia did get the better of the shots, but they were mostly long range and didn’t trouble Mason much. As we ticked down to less than a minute to go, it appeared to be headed to OT. However Calvert did some serious dirty work behind the Flyer net to free the puck and slid a perfect pass to a cutting Umberger, who beat a double team and Bryzgalov for an improbable one-time wrister to make it 2-1 with just 40 seconds to go:

Posted Image

The stunned Flyers pulled the goalie and made a made crash at the net, but their fate was sealed when Schenn was forced to take a hooking penalty when I was on my way to an empty netter with just 17 seconds to go:

Posted Image

As the horn sounded I celebrated my second shocking victory of the season, coupling this result with my win in Detroit to give me a pair of most improbable road wins:

Posted Image

Shots were 11-4 Flyers in the third, 34-17 for the game. Faceoffs were 17-12 Flyers, and both teams were 1/5 on the PP. The difference in this game was Mason and the defense, which surprisingly played so well without Wisniewski.

Posted Image

This was shocking to me and the Flyers I imagine, I had no real feel that I was going to turn it around with this game on the road. With the Detroit win, it stands as a big one, but after that first one is when my tailspin started, so I will need to avoid that after this big and emotional win tonight. I still had many of the same offensive problems that have plagued me for the last 4-6 games, but the defense and goaltending were really good in this one. It’s hard to know whether to concentrate on defense going forward or to keep trying to push the puck and generate more offense…this is kind of a tweener team with the personnel I have, and if Mason starts to slide I could be in trouble either way. The second line got the winner tonight, and the lower lines did play better, but I am still going to need some more from the moving forward, starting with my next game at home to Chicago. Until then, goodnight from the Wells Fargo Center, where the final score was Columbus 2, Philadelphia 1.

Game 15: Chicago at Columbus

Posted Image

After breaking my losing streak with an improbable win in Philadelphia, I returned home after a few days off to face division rival Chicago in a battle for position. The Hawks entered the game at 9-3-3 and in the top 3 of the Western Conference with 21 points. I entered at a respectable 7-6-1, but with 15 points I was mired in a tie for 10th. This is my second meeting with the Blackhawks, who clipped me 3-1 in Chicago in game 11. I didn’t want to mess with my lines too much since I found a combination that worked last game, so I left them except for Wisniewski, who was again healthy and I always want in the lineup. So he was in for Clitsome and I reshuffled the lines to put him back on the top like and paired Johnson and Russell on the 3rd line. I also put him back on PP1 and PK2, as he had been before, and shifted everyone else around. Mason finally played well last game so I was hoping to build on that against my second straight tough and top-rated team. To the Nationwide Arena for the results of game 15 of the 2011-12 season.

INJURIES:

CHICAGO: Lepisto, Stalburg, Seabrook, Hjalmarsson out; Emery fatigued
COLUMBUS: None

GOALIES:

CHICAGO: Crawford
COLUMBUS: Mason

It didn’t take long for things to get going, though not initially the way I wanted, as Pahlsson charged into the defensive zone trailing the play and took a hooking penalty less than 2 minutes in, putting me down a man early:

Posted Image

The kill unit was working early, and with Nash and MacKenzie leading the way I killed it off pretty easily. The next 8 minutes really went by without too much goalmouth action, as both teams were battling for the puck along the boards and trying to keep fresh players out. We were playing a physical game, but the hitting was by and large allowed so there wasn’t much continuity in the zones. At about the halfway point Mason made a routine save and flipped the puck to Nash, who took it along the left boards. As he entered the zone, he stopped and fired a shot as I was changing lines behind him, but somehow it got screened by a defender standing in front of him and beat Crawford to give me an “Excuse Me” 1-0 lead. Mason even got an assist because it was really just a save, dump, and move that turned into a goal:

Posted Image

This seemed to rattle Crawford, who seemed shaky from here on out. About a minute later, Calvert, now on the second line, circled the net and did some nice stick work to slide a pass in front to Umberger, who cut to the net and zapped a backhander past a flummoxed Crawford to double my lead to 2-0:

Posted Image

Over the next 5 minutes I kept the heat on the net. Chicago beat me for a couple of counter-attack chances, but Mason made a couple of good saves and I was right back up ice. At the 16 minute mark I got a faceoff and slid a pass to Nash, who again basically just slid into the zone and hammered the crap out of the puck at the net, as he had done earlier. This time there was a screen directly in front of Nash, which again distracted Crawford and allowed the shot to go in, giving me an improbable 3-0 lead as my offense was finally coming alive, albeit against bad goaltending:

Posted Image

With less than 2 to go in the period Chicago send the big boys out to see if they could get something going, and Scott took a cheap shot penalty to the face, giving me my only power play of the first period:

Posted Image

I wasn’t able to get a goal as the period waned, but I had been peppering the net as Chicago basically just looked like they were trying to get to the intermission. That backfired, as with just 5 seconds left, Umberger took a pass from Vermette, cut to the net, then slid a beauty to Johansen on the post, and he decked it past Crawford to give me a 4-0 lead and give Crawford an early trip to the showers:

Posted Image

The period ended and the shell-shocked Hawks went back to the dressing room to regroup. I peppered them for 4 goals on just 11 shots, while they had come up empty on their 13 tries. I was moving the puck well and I also was holding my own on faceoffs. The second came with Emery, despite being fatigued, being in net, and the Hawks needing to get something going quickly if they had hope of getting back in it.

As might be expected from a one-sided division game, the second period devolved into Penaltyfest 2011. After just 2 penalties total in the first period, the action got going off the opening faceoff in the second as Frolik took the first one just 21 seconds in with a vicious boarding hit:

Posted Image

However in my thirst to get the puck to pour it on, I took a careless hooking penalty on Tyutin just 15 seconds later, negating the advantage:

Posted Image

Neither team seemed to like the 4-on-4 much, as nobody was really able to generate much goal pressure. The Hawks had the better of it but Mason was equal to it and the shots weren’t all that difficult to stop. I was camped at the net to collect rebounds, which helped me out immensely as well. For round 2 I got it started with a hooking penalty on Nash at the 3 minute mark:

Posted Image

Of course it was only a matter of time before we had a whistle again for something, and in about a minute Scott was called again for roughing, this time to the chest, and it was back even:

Posted Image

As soon as those were over, I got the ball rolling again with a hooking call on Vermette at the 6 minute mark, and I was right back down a man:

Posted Image

However with Mason playing at a high level and my blocking some shots in the middle, I was able to frustrate them repeatedly and turn them away. As soon as it was even, a frustrated Kane was whistled for holding, and it was my turn again:

Posted Image

This time however Chicago also got called for the second one, a hook on Hossa, and I was up 2 men for a full 90 seconds as the period reached the halfway point:

Posted Image

Finally I was able to capitalize, but not initially. The Hawks did a great job of clearing the puck while down 2 men, as I still can’t seem to work the puck 5-on-3 like I can any other time, for whatever reason. Maybe I try and make too many cute passes, I don’t know. Anyway my PP2 line took advantage of the confusion as the first penalty was ending and the Hawks were trying to change. Vermette found Johansen again, this time with a quick little pass from the point to the deep front, and he put it in to give me a commanding 5-0 lead:

Posted Image

The offense and the power play had both come alive, and I finally beat a fatigued Emery for one more to put it seemingly out of reach. The rest of the period had more of a “play it out” kind of feel to it, as the culmination of all of those penalties seemed to be my goal. The Hawks seemed pretty much resigned to their fate, and there was still an entire period to go. They did take one more penalty, a hooking call on Carcillo with 2 to go, giving me one more shot at a power play:

Posted Image

However I couldn’t get much accomplished this time, and after an eventful period I was up 5-0. Shots were actually 12-6 Chicago in the second, but I had put in the only goal and was in good shape to win this one. I was dominating the game, and seemingly the only thing left was to see if I could preserve the shutout.

Posted Image

I was determined not to get into a stick-swinging fight with the Hawks in the third since I was up by so many, so when Bolland tried to start one just a minute in, I just waited for the power play:

Posted Image

On the power play, the second line, hot all game, struck for a third time. Here Vermette picked up his third assist, as he took the puck deep and feather it back to Tyutin, who hammered a slapshot past a heavy screen and Emery to make it 6-0 with 18 minutes to go:

Posted Image

For the rest of the first half of the period, I held my own, though the Hawks were suddenly playing better, perhaps sensing the shutout was the only thing they could take away. Their efforts were derailed at the halfway point by a hooking call on Carcillo, so I was back up a man for a final time:

Posted Image

The Hawks played tough on the kill and blocked several shot attempts, however, and my quest for a 7th was turned away. When they were back even they kept going for broke at the net like they were down 1 in the 7th game of the Cup Finals, and finally they got their break when Frolik hit a tough slapper to Mason, who deflected it right to an awaiting Bickell for the garbage goal and the breakup of the shutout with less than 6 to go:

Posted Image

That was more or less it. The Hawks had broken up the shutout so they stopped pressuring, and I had more than enough to win, so I did as well. As the horn sounded, Mason had an impressive victory and I had humbled the Hawks in evening the season series at 1-1:

Posted Image

Shots were 8-4 Chicago in then 3rd, 33-21 Hawks overall, but I put quite a few in when it counted. I was 3/8 on the power play as my third line was humming, and I held them to 0/4, though a couple of those were abbreviated. Faceoffs were16 apiece. This was obviously a big win for me but it was a very important one as well, because it moves me to 17 points and puts me back in the pack searching for those 6-8 spots. Chicago remained in the top 3 in what is a heavily diversified and very evenly matched Western Conference. The lowest team has 12, the highest 23, so everyone is still bunched up. This win helped keep me in sight of Chicago and Detroit at the top of the division and definitely keeps me in the playoff position conversation, though of course it is very early in the season. I have no idea if this is “the” line combination finally, but I am definitely going to keep it until it stops working. On Saturday I host the Winnipeg Jets, and I can’t wait to see that team for the first time since moving (rightly) back to Canada. They are surprisingly right in the thick of it in the East, so I will have to play my best hockey to slow them down. Until then, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where the final score was Columbus 6, Chicago 1 in a badly needed dominating win.

Game 16: Winnipeg at Columbus

Posted Image

After trouncing Chicago, I next stayed home to play the Winnipeg Jets for the first time since their move back to Canada from Atlanta. The Jets look like little more than an expansion roster on paper, but they entered the game at a surprising 10-5-1 clip, well in contention for playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. I entered with less points (8-6-1) and mired in a tie in the 8-12 range, but with some momentum after starting a modest 2 game winning streak. Clitsome rotated back into the lineup, with Martinek scratched in the defense this week. Pavelec was also out so it was Mason vs. Mason in between the pipes for the game, as Steve took on Chris. The big news, however, is that I decided to make the same trade as happened with the real Jackets, in that Russell went to the Blues in exchange for Nikitin. It’s a rare 1-to-1 trade that is negligible in roster value difference for both teams, so since I like to follow along with the Jackets, I made the trade to stay as close to the current team as I could (I will not acquire Letestu, really no way to fairly do that). Russell was without a point and at -5 in 7 games, while Nikitin was at 3 assists and a +1 in 11 games for the Blues, so I am hoping maybe he can jumpstart my defense. I did what the real Jackets did, throw him right out there and see what he can do. So it’s off to the Nationwide Arena to see if I could keep my winning streak going against a team that on paper looks like one I should be able to beat.

INJURIES:

WINNIPEG: Wellwood, Klingberg out; Pavelec fatigued
COLUMBUS: None

GOALIES:

WINNIPEG: C. Mason
COLUMBUS: S. Mason

This was a frustrating game to develop any rhythm, but it did feature quite a bit of special teams play. After about 5 minutes of a feeling-out process for both teams, the Jets began heading to the box. First it was Byfuglien for hooking, and then Oduya followed suit a little over a minute later, so not only did I have early power play chances, but I had a 5-on-3 for almost a minute:

Posted Image

Posted Image

I took the opportunity to pepper Mason with shots, as I had the puck moving well and got some good one-timers off. However, I was repeatedly frustrated by some good goaltending, and the opportunity of extended power play time went unrewarded. Not to be outdone, as the Jet penalties were ending, I started my own parade to the box. First it was Umberger for hooking, and then Methot a minute later, and as we hit the halfway point of the period, it was the Jets’ turn at a 5-on-3:

Posted Image

Posted Image

This time the Jets were repeatedly frustrated, as despite being down 2 skaters for quite a while, I really never allowed for than a shot or two before clearing the puck and forcing a reset. Many times I was able to intercept the puck without a shot at all. After a final flurry at the end, I was out of the box and over the next 5 minutes we went back and forth slowly up ice at even strength. I got a few shots off, but mostly from distance and Mason was playing well. At the 16 minute mark, Glass took a roughing penalty (away from the play, on right), and I was back up a man one more time before the end of the period:

Posted Image

However in my zeal to be physical and get the puck, I not only got whistled for a cross-check on Johnson just 30 seconds in, but took a roughing call on Brassard as well, both along the boards, setting up a bit of rare 4-on-3 time to close the period:

Posted Image

Posted Image

I turned away the open ice time and when we were back at even strength the period ended quickly. I had outshot the Jets 15-8 and controlled hits and faceoffs, so I was feeling pretty good about the way the game was going heading into the second, despite there being no score.

Posted Image

The penalty trend continued early in the second, as after just 4 minutes Pahlsson was whistled for roughing along the boards (a common theme in the game), putting me back down a man:

Posted Image

This time I killed the penalty and they got very little pressure on the net. When I got out of the box, I seized control of the momentum some, and by working the puck around I drew an interference call on Fehr, putting me back up a man at the 7 minute mark:

Posted Image

However, the Jets managed to do exactly the same thing to me as I had done, clearing the puck repeatedly after blocking shots to basically keep their goaltender unblemished during the entire power play. As we got back to even strength at the halfway point of the game, it was unclear if either Mason was going to get beat at all. However, I finally caught a break during a transitional line change, with Carter feeding Brassard, who cut into the zone and found Johansen for a one-timer, which beat Mason to give me a hard-earned 1-0 lead:

Posted Image

The goal didn’t really change the flow of the game, however, as both teams kept pushing the limit and Cormier took a hooking penalty trying to get the puck in the offensive zone, giving me another man advantage at the 12 minute mark:

Posted Image

This time, at long last, I finally cashed in my chance, as Umberger sent the puck to the point and the defensemen did some good work, as Nikitin collected his first point for me by feeding Tyutin for a one-time slapper from distance to double my lead to 2-0:

Posted Image

For the final 8 minutes of the period both teams primarily played defense, as neither team really did much with the puck. Glass took a tripping penalty with less than 30 seconds to go, giving me a man advantage one more time before the second horn:

Posted Image

I would carry that into the locker room, as one clearance was all it took to run out the time, and the period ended with me up 2-0. Shots were just 6-5 in the period, but I had scored twice, kept my net empty, controlled the faceoff circle and moved the puck well. I was in good shape heading to the third, and I figured all I needed to do was keep doing what I was doing and I was in good shape for the W.

Posted Image

I started the third with the man advantage, and though I got a couple of good chances nothing came of it. Right as that was ending, Prospal was called for roughing (yep, along the boards), and it was my turn to be down a man:

Posted Image

Though I killed the penalty off, there was a subtle but definite shift in momentum. The Jets were moving the puck well, created a couple of good chances that Mason had to turn away, and generally had me more on my heels than I had been all game. As soon as I killed the penalty, Methot was whistled for a cheap interference call, and I was right back down a man again:

Posted Image

This time the Jets pounced, as in less than 20 seconds Kane found Byfuglien deep, and he hammered a wrister that went off the post and off Mason to get into the net and cut the lead in half with still 16 minutes to go:

Over the next 6 minutes, the Jets continued their momentum, and it had the feel of not if, but when, they were going to tie the score. Sure enough, and the period’s halfway point, Scheifele found Thorburn for a one-timer in front that beat Mason off of a deflection (he initially whiffed on the one-timer, and then when he collected the puck he fired it past a wrong-footed Mason clean) to tie the score with still 10 minutes to go:

At this point they ramped up the pressure even more, crashing the zone such that I couldn’t even clear the puck. However when it looked like I was in big trouble to give up the go-ahead goal, Little was called for interference, stalling the Jet attack:

Posted Image

Back up a man I pressed ahead and got a handful of good scoring chances, but Mason turned me away and I was unable to break the tie. At this point both teams retreated to defensive mode to try and protect the single point. As time wore down, it appeared that we were definitely headed to OT. However, with just a minute to go in regulation, I got my top line back out for one more shift, and what a decision that turned out to be. The forwards moved the puck around the zone, and Carter ended up finding Prospal from behind the net with a pass that he hammered in from point blank range to give me an improbable 3-2 lead:

Posted Image

The Jets pulled Mason, but to no avail, and as the final horn sounded after a clearance or two, I had a dramatic and important 3-2 victory at home:

Posted Image

Shots were 14-12 Jets in what turned out to be a wild third period, making it 33-27 for the game in favor of the Jackets. Both teams were just 1/7 on the PP as the kill units were working well all night. I worked the faceoff circle 29-13 and ended with a 90% passing mark for the game, all numbers that would suggest an easier victory than I had, which is a testament to the scrappiness of this Jet team.

Posted Image

In the end, I pushed my winning streak to 3, but I really had to earn it. I was satisfied to get to OT, but I just got that one chance with my best line at the end that I was able to take advantage of. This was an important win as I head back out on the road, as this is one of those games at home you have to have and Mason will need to take the next game off when I go to Minnesota to face the Wild Tuesday. Nikitin already has more points for me than Russell did all season, so hopefully that trade will work out for me in the long run as well. My kill units were good, but my power play struggled tonight. Still, I won the game on an even strength goal, so that is encouraging, and Mason played another good game. Until it is time to face the Wild, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where the final score in dramatic fashion was Columbus 3, Winnipeg 2.

Game 17: Minnesota at Columbus

Posted Image

So I was mistaken at the end of my last post, instead of going to Minnesota, I entertained the Wild at the back end of a 3 game home set. After reaching 6-6-1 I have been on a 3 game winning streak and am 6-4 in my last 10, putting me right in the 7-10 range in the Western Conference. The Wild meanwhile have struggled, sitting at 5-7-5, just 3-7 in their lat 10 and with only 15 points are near the bottom of a tightly packed conference. Mason had to sit this game so Dekanich got the start against Backstrom. Everything else was more or less the same as the last few games, as I am trying to keep the combinations together that are working. Nikitin collected his first point for me last game, so hopefully his productive play can continue. Otherwise it’s off to the Nationwide Arena to see if I could close out the home stand 3-0 and head on the road with a 4 game winning streak.

INJURIES:

MINNESOTA: Setoguchi, Zanon, Linden, Brodziak, Latendresse out
COLUMBUS: Mason fatigued

GOALIES:

MINNESOTA: Backstrom
COLUMBUS: Dekanich

It was obvious from the very beginning that this game was going to be ugly. Cal Clutterbuck came out like my team had burned his house down and he was going to get even with us. He started wearing his trail to the box just 90 seconds in, when he took his first collar for cross-checking:

Posted Image

I got a few early shots on Backstrom on the power play, but with the way he was playing I knew I was in for a long night, and a couple of clearances killed off the penalty. A couple of minutes went by before Clutterbuck was back again, this time for hooking:

Posted Image

This time I got some early heat on the net before Umberger got a little too aggressive less than a minute in and was whistled for hooking, negating the advantage:

Posted Image

No one was able to score on the rapid sequences of penalties starting and ending, and we were no sooner back to even strength that Clutterbuck went right back for roughing, giving me yet another chance as the period reached the halfway point:

Posted Image

Again, after being turned away in the first minute I got a little too aggressive going after the puck and Prospal was whistled for hooking, sending it back to 4-on-4:

Posted Image

This began a crazy sequence where a total of 5 penalties were called in a span of less than 3 minutes. After Prospal, Bouchard was called for hooking a minute later, followed closely be Heatley for hooking, putting me up 5-on-3. However Minnesota wasn’t done, as Clutterbuck apparently thought that penalties were a sure way to the Stanley Cup Finals, taking yet another one for slashing a minute later, and Schultz followed closely for hooking. The grand total was about 4-5 minutes of 5-on-3 time, giving me a golden opportunity to take control of the game early:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Yet the grand sum of goals I was able to muster was zero. Inexplicably, I was unable to score…at all. I moved the puck OK, I got some decent shots, but Backstrom was playing well and the defenders immediately cleared all rebounds, meaning I didn’t get second chances and had to repeatedly chase the puck down ice and reset. My lines were also getting tired at the end, so I wasn’t able to move the puck around as effectively as I was at the beginning of the sequence. The rest of the period went by rather quickly, and at the end of one, it was a scoreless game, despite me having 16 shots and 7 official power play chances in the period. Faceoffs were about even, and I had held the Wild to just 6 shots. So defensively I was doing fine, but I had to think entering the second that I had let plenty of golden opportunities pass me by.

Posted Image

As we started the second, neither team was really able to do all that much. About 3:30 in, Pahlsson went for tripping, and it was my turn to play defense down a man. A minute later Dorsett got run for interference, and it was my turn to play with just 3 skaters:

Posted Image

Posted Image

I was up to the challenge of playing with 3, and Mason also made some good saves. In particular ash did some good clearing of the puck and chasing it down, and a frustrated Wild saw Heatley take an interference call of his own, negating the advantage late:

Posted Image

Again things got a little crazy, as Dorsett went right back into the box for roughing a minute later, only to see Heatley go right back for interference a minute after that:

Posted Image

Posted Image

The end result was an extremely choppy first half of the period where neither team could get any rhythm and it was hard to even determine who was on the ice when or who had an advantage, if any. The second half of the period was much more by the book. There weren’t more than 2-3 good chances for either team, and both goaltenders were really playing at a high level. With all the lines messed up because of so much special teams time, keeping fresh players on ice was difficult as well. At the end of 2 periods, we had a scoreless game, with shots at 8 apiece in the second and faceoffs about even. We had combined to go 0/14 on the man advantage through the first 2 periods, and it looked like a single goal might win the game heading into the third. The officiating would be key, depending on whether they were calling it close or letting us play, as to whether special teams would play as key a role in the third.

Posted Image

And play a key role special teams would in the third period. 4 minutes in Umberger headed off for hooking, and I was down a man, giving the Wild the first good chance in the third:

Posted Image

This time the Wild finally struck gold, as Heatley did some nice puck work and slid a cross-ice angled pass to Shultz down low, and he chipped it in past Dekanich, who had been playing brilliantly, to give the Wild a 1-0 lead in just 7 seconds:

Posted Image

Despite being discouraged I didn’t panic. Dekanich was playing well, so I knew that if I could find a way to put one past Backstrom, it would likely be a next goal wins scenario down the stretch. Any questions about whether Backstrom could be beaten on this night were answered at the halfway point of the period, as MacKenzie slid a beauty of a feed to Dorsett deep, and he quickly one-timed a flip past Backstrom high side to even the score at 1 with 10 minutes to play:

Posted Image

2 minutes later the Wild would get one more chance on the man advantage, as Methot was called for roughing along the boards and I was headed back to the box:

Posted Image

The Wild PP would be shortlived though, as a fateful hooking call on Ortmeyer would again even the game just 40 seconds later:

Posted Image

As I left the box I charged into the zone and set up the man advantage, albeit abbreviated. I moved the puck around and got a couple of good chances, and then finally, FINALLY, Johansen hit Vermette with a cross-ice pass he was able to one-time in, and I had my long awaited power play goal and a 2-1 lead with 5 and a half minutes to go:

Posted Image

The Wild panicked a bit and started playing much more aggressively. It worked for a while, but Zidlicky was called for hooking along the boards at around the 18 minute mark, effectively giving me a power play for the remainder of the game:

Posted Image

The Wild had no choice but to go for broke and chase the puck and try and score down a man, which opened up plenty of room in transition for me. After about a minute Nash found Carter and the center put the game away with a nifty backhander that made it 3-1:

Posted Image

That would be the final margin, as Dekanich celebrated a fabulous performance and a hard earned 3-1 victory at the final horn:

Posted Image

Shots were 10-8 Columbus in the final period, 34-22 overall. I ended up 2/11 on the PP after scoring on my last 2 chances, and Minnesota ended up 1/7. I controlled faceoffs in the third period and ended with a 28-19 advantage.

Posted Image

There is really very little good to say about this game other than I won it. Both teams spent way too much time in the box, and both power plays were awful for most of the game. My kill was good though, and I was pretty good in the rare even strength times we had as well. Also Dekanich played very well, and it is rare to get that kind of effort from the backup goaltender. After this I hit the road and head first to Boston to take on the Bruins. That game will likely be very physical as well, and I had best take better advantage of my man advantage times going forward or I am going to lose a lot of games like this one. Until then, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where the final score was Columbus 3, Minnesota 1.

Game 18: Columbus at Boston

Posted Image

Well after a hiatus because of holiday and illness, it’s time to get the reports caught up and get the season back going again. In this game, I entered the proverbial lion’s den as I had to travel to Boston, who entered the game at a sparkling 12-2-2, 8-2 in their last 10 and running roughshod over the Eastern Conference. After my win last time out, I was 10-6-1, 6-4 in my last 10 and right back into the playoff discussion in the Western Conference. Boston is a punishing team that I figured I was going to have to play almost a perfect game to beat. If things get out of hand early, it can be a long and ugly day. On the other hand if Mason could continue his sparkling start, especially after a game off, and keep it close into the third, I might just have a chance to steal one, or so the thinking went. Going up against Thomas is no small challenge, so as I headed to the TD Garden I knew I had my work cut out for me.

INJURIES:

COLUMBUS: None
BOSTON: Campbell, Whitfield, Paille out

GOALIES:

COLUMBUS: Mason
BOSTON: Thomas

It didn’t take long for Boston to show off that patented aggression, as Bergeron was whistled for hooking on open ice just 2 minutes into the game:

Posted Image

I had a hard time contending with the penalty killers though, and I barely generated any offensive pressure before the teams were back even. It was an unfortunate harbinger of things to come. Just 5 minutes later, Boston got on the board first, as Kelly found Ference in front for an easy point-blank one-timer to give the home side a 1-0 lead:

Posted Image

Though it looked like this might be the beginning of a blowout, I hung in there and held my own for the next 8 minutes. I kept control of the puck and kept fresh lines out there, and finally my hard work on defense resulted in a hooking penalty on Thornton on the goaltender, which gave me my second man advantage of the game at the 15 minute mark:

Posted Image

A minute into the power play and I had my equalizer, as Johnson slid a pass across the point to Nash, who banged home a slapper from distance to tie the score at 1 with just 4 minutes remaining in the period:

Posted Image

It looked as though I would get to the break with a tie game and some momentum, but the Bruins had some other ideas. Just a minute later Peverley found Krejci in a similar position as the first goal, and the result was the same, as he burned the screen and the netminder to make it 2-1 Bruins with 3 to play in the opening frame:

Posted Image

I tried to play out the remainder of the period but the Bruins were relentless. They were knocking me all over the ice and getting repeated pressure on the net, as though they smelled blood in the water already. With 30 seconds left in the period, Carter was whistled for a questionable interference penalty, and the Bruins had their first power play:

Posted Image

In just 11 seconds Peverley hammered in a rebound off of a Marchand shot, and as I headed to the break I was in a big hole that had been dug in seemingly seconds, as I was down 3-1.

Posted Image

Shots were 13-4 Boston in the period and I was getting slaughtered in faceoffs, so I really never had the puck. Entering the second I either needed a strong turnaround in rapid fashion or else this one was going to get away from me quickly.

Posted Image

And get away it did. In just 3 minutes Bergeron found Caron on the wing, and he hit a relatively routine shot that Mason failed to save, giving the Bruins a commanding 4-1 advantage:

Posted Image

2 minutes later the Bruins were back in the box as Boychuk got whistled for hooking, and I had another glimmer of hope:

Posted Image

It was short-lived, however, as the Bruin PK was on fire all night and actually got as much pressure on my net as I did theirs. At the halfway point of the game, the calls started evening out. First, Methot was called for tripping:

Posted Image

I turned away the Bruins on this occasion, but it was evident that I had better stay out of the box for the rest of the game because they got some really good scoring chances. Alas, at the 15 minute mark it was Calvert’s turn to go for a punishing hit along the boards, and back down a man I went:

Posted Image

This time it only took Boston 15 seconds to set up Caron’s second goal and put this one away with 25 minutes still yet to play, as they took a 5-1 lead:

Posted Image

With less than 2 to go Ference took a hooking penalty, but my man advantage was short-lived as Nash returned the favor with 45 seconds left:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Mercifully that brought the end of the period, though there was still a full one left. Shots were 18-7 Boston in the period, 31-11 for the game so far, and I had won a grand total of 4 faceoffs. It was men amongst boys out there today, so it was basically time to try and salvage some pride and play out the third.

Posted Image

Alas, it just got worse. As the Boston penalty ended, they had an abbreviated power play. That was enough fro them though, as Ference took an outlet pass from Thomas, streaked up the wing, and hammered it past Mason for a 6-1 lead just a minute in:

Posted Image

It got worse. At the 4 minute mark, the Bruins were still moving the puck at will like the Red Wings usually do, and they set up Caron in front at point blank range for his hat trick, making it 7-1, as the crowd saluted him:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Mercifully they somewhat backed off after that, and we went up and down the ice for most of the rest of the game. The refs put the whistles away which also helped move the third along, as I imagine everyone had dinner reservations and this game was over after a period. With less than a minute to go, I decided to throw down just to prove a point, so Bass went with McQuaid:

Posted Image

It was the only thing I would win all night, but Bass won the fight decisively and KO’d McQuaid with a vicious head shot:

Posted Image

The action ended with a goal just 8 seconds later, as Nash found Tyutin as the defense fell asleep, and he put a nifty move on and worked it past Thomas to close it out at 7-2:

Posted Image

Mercifully the final horn sounded and Thomas celebrated his coast of a victory as I was soundly beaten as badly as I ever have been:

Posted Image

Shots were 12-6 Boston in the third, 43-17 overall. They were 3 of 4 on the power play and I got slaughtered 26-4 on faceoffs, while converting only one power play and barely ever pressuring the net when it mattered.

Posted Image

This was an absolute demolition, an abomination to hockey fans everywhere. I got destroyed in every phase of the game, I got muscled off the puck, Mason was awful, I missed the net on several shots, and the defense allowed the Bruins to pitch a tent in front all night. I have nothing else to say other than it only counts as one loss, and this is exactly the kind of game you just forget happened and move on. It doesn’t get any easier next time out, however, as I travel to my arch-nemesis Nashville, who will be eager for retribution after getting scalded in the first meeting in Columbus. So that will be an important division game and actually more important in the grand scheme than winning this one. So, until then, goodnight from the TD Garden, where the final score was Boston 7, Columbus 2, in a game that wasn’t nearly that close.

Game 19: Columbus at Nashville

Posted Image

After being annihilated in Boston, I was quick to get out of town and head on to the next stop. In this case, it was time to head to Nashville to play my arch-nemesis, the Predators. Back to expansion and entry into the league, these franchises have been going head to head, and being in the same division, these games are eternally nasty and the Bridgestone Arena has been an incredibly difficult place to play. I got hammered there several times last year, and after beating the Preds the first time this year, they would be anxious for payback. Nashville entered the game at 9-4-5, 6th in the Western Conference and 5-5 in their last 10. After my loss I was 10-7-1, 5-5 in my last 10 and tied for 8th in a very bunched up conference race. So the tight divide between the two teams just adds to the intrigue, but these teams need no added motivation in these games. To the Bridgestone Arena to see if I could bounce back in a big way.

INJURIES:

COLUMBUS: None
NASHVILLE: Fisher, Kelin out

GOALIES:

COLUMBUS: Mason
NASHVILLE: Rinne

It didn’t take long for this one to get going in typical fashion. In the first 70 seconds 2 roughing penalties were called, the first on Tyutin and the second on Geoffrion:

Tough to get too much out of the few seconds of power play, and the 4-on-4 didn’t really open it up any, so we were back to full strength in seemingly no time without much activity. Just 3 minutes later Geoffrion would have his revenge, as he took a feed from Kostitsyn and buried it from point blank range to give the Preds a 1-0 lead less than 5 minutes in:

At this point, however, the game began to shift. I started getting more pressure on the Nashville net, and my defense started meeting the Preds at the point and taking control of the puck. Just 3 minutes after going down 1-0, I evened it up, as Wisniewski took a feed from Mason, sped up the wing during a line change, entered the zone, and hammered a missile past Rinne:

Posted Image

The last 10 minutes of the period I controlled. I held the puck and moved it well, and more importantly I kept the Preds out of my zone and shots away from mason, who had been bombarded his last time out. At the end of a period, the score was tied at 1, but I was up in shots 10-4 and faceoffs 6-3, and felt like I was controlling the game.

Posted Image

Sometimes coming out for the second, I tend to lose my momentum gained at the end of the first, but this time I poured it on like molten lava. Just 20 seconds in Hillen took a roughing penalty, and I was quickly on the attack:

Posted Image

A minute later I took the lead, as Johansen found a streaking Vermette, who crashed the crease and chipped it in perfectly for a 2-1 advantage:

Posted Image

I kept pressing and kept the Preds on their heels, and 5 minutes later Laasko was in the box for hooking, giving me another power play chance:

Posted Image

Again a minute later I cashed in, as all 3 forwards on the lethal line moved the puck, resulting in a marker for Nash on a sweet backhander for a 3-1 lead 7 minutes in:

Posted Image

2 minutes later the Preds were starting to panic, and started playing undisciplined. This led to 2 penalties on Legwand, both for hooking. The first cam at 9 minutes, the second as soon as he got back out of the box:

Posted Image

Posted Image

The Preds fought off the first power play, but in the second a defender knocked the puck in his own net off a deflection, which was credited to Tyutin and gave me a 4-1 lead with 8 to go in the period:

Posted Image

Spaling took one more penalty down the stretch, giving me one more power play chance with about 2 left in the period:

Posted Image

However Rinne made a couple of good saves and the damage was limited. Still, as the final hors sounded on the second period, I had dominated the frame and had a 4-1 lead. Shots were 11-9 in the period and I was killing them in faceoffs, so I was controlling the game pretty thoroughly. Only a monster comeback could get the Preds back in the game in the third.

Posted Image

Instead, their hyperaggression kept getting them in trouble. After 5 minutes of even hockey, Smithson headed off for hooking, and my power play units were on call again:

Posted Image

A minute later the Big 3 struck again, this time culminating in a goal for Carter and an early trip to the showers for Rinne, down 5-1:

Posted Image

2 minutes later Wilson headed off for hooking, and I had a real chance to rub it in:

Posted Image

And rub it in I did, as less than 30 seconds later Johnson found Carter with a sweet feed for his second power-play one-time goal of the period and a 6-1 lead:

Posted Image

MacKenzie took a holding penalty at the halfway point, and the Preds had a chance to salvage some pride with a power play:

Posted Image

However I fought it off and my kill unit was fresh and working well, so I was back at even strength. I really laid it on them, smacking them around for the rest of the game. One hit in particular was especially vicious from Pahlsson and shattered the glass all over the Predator:

Posted Image

In the final minute there were 3 penalties in rapid succession, and things started getting out of hand:
Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Luckily however the final whistle was seconds away, and I celebrated a thorough beatdown of my most hated opponent on the road:

Posted Image

Shots were 11-7 in the third, 32-20 for the game for the Jackets. I wiped them out on faceoffs 29-12 and was 5/9 on the power play while turning away their 2 chances. I also outhit them 20-8, so I beat them up but avoided costing myself by doing it.

Posted Image

This was an especially satisfying win coming off of my terrible performance in Boston. Against my biggest rival I put together one of my best performances. I knocked them around, scored at will on the power play, won a bunch of faceoffs, controlled the game, didn’t allow a lot of shots and scored 6 unanswered after going down 1-0. This should help me as I return home to face Calgary, looking to build a winning streak and move up the playoff ladder. Next game is the 20th, so there will be a segment report after it, and the season is ¼ over already. Until then, goodnight from the Bridgestone Arena, where the final score was Columbus 6, Nashville 1.

Cool, have fun! Minnesota might be a nice choice, they aren't strong in the game team-wise but they are playing well in real life. The Islanders, Florida, Ottawa, and Edmonton are other good choices. Good luck!

Game 20: Calgary at Columbus

Posted Image

Well after a couple of strange road games that couldn’t have been more lopsided (one each direction) it was time to try and equalize things back home for a brief stop to play Calgary in Columbus. The Flames entered the game struggling at 8-7-3, 3-7 in their last 10 and T12 in the conference after a promising start. I entered at 11-7-1, 6-4 in my last 10 and in a big tie for 7th in the conference. The Flames are a physical bunch who like to push people around and don’t necessarily have the finesse puck movement of some other teams, so for me I looked at this as an important game to control the tempo and stay out of the penalty box, with hopes I might get some power play chances of my own. Mason was in net against Kiprusoff, so it should be a good matchup as I head towards the quarter pole of the season. To the Nationwide Arena to see if I was able to close out this 10 game segment with a victory.

INJURIES:

CALGARY: Butler, Giordano, Carson, Borque, Ivanans out
COLUMBUS: None

GOALIES:

CALGARY: Kiprusoff
COLUMBUS: Mason

The Flames came out aggressive along the boards, and it didn’t take long for it to get them in trouble, as Glencross took a roughing penalty less than 90 seconds into the game:

Though I didn’t score on this particular power play, I used it as a way to grab the momentum and establish the tempo I wanted. I controlled the puck, passed it around the boards, and set up several decent looks that Kiprusoff was able to turn away. However I had seized control, and a minute after the penalty was over, I got a rare goal from the 4th line, as Boll did some nice board work and found Dorsett with a slide pass, and he banged in a perfect one-timer to give me a 1-0 lead less than 5 minutes in:

Posted Image

The good news was I was ahead, the bad news was that as soon as the goal went in, Calgary seized back control of the game. I got knocked around a couple of times and was unable to control the puck, leading to being on the defensive and having trouble changing my lines. The result at the 8 minute mark was Iginla hammering in a point blank rebound off of a Glencross pass/shot, evening the game at 1:

The rest of the period flew by rather quickly, with both teams garnering a scoring chance or two but playing good defense for the most part. At the end of one, it was tied 1-1, shots were 12-9 Calgary, faceoffs were about even, and there was only one penalty, which was a bit of a surprise.

Posted Image

In the second, the play was more aggressive and the refs were more active, getting the special teams involved more. It started at the 5 minute mark, when Iginla was whistled for hooking:

Posted Image

It didn’t take long for me to cash this one in, as Prospal fed Carter in front with a nice pass, and the center did the rest to make it 2-1 Jackets:

Some even strength play until the halfway point gave way to a penalty fest in the second half of the period. I took 3, Calgary took 2, and unfortunately they were spaced out such that neither team could get anything going, which killed all the flow and rhythm of the game. The remainder of the period looked like this:

After all was said and done, I headed to the second intermission with a 2-1 lead. Shots were 16-9 Calgary in a crazy period that really had no rhyme or reason to it. I was holding my own on the kill and doing pretty well on faceoffs, so things were looking reasonably good headed into the third.

Posted Image

Early in the third Hannan was whistled for hooking, and it looked like I had a great chance to take command of the game:

Posted Image

However the Flames kill was working well all night and held me completely at bay, and they seemed to use that to slowly build momentum once we got back to even strength. I thought I had a pretty good handle on things, but at the halfway mark of the period Hagman put a routine shot on Mason that he not only failed to handle, but actually kicked into his own net, knotting the game at 2 with 10 to play:

Posted Image

Down the stretch both teams played more defensive hockey, and both played smart hockey by staying out of the box. The netminders each made a couple of good saves, and at the horn, both teams had earned a point and we were headed to OT. Shots were 14-6 Columbus in the third but I was never able to beat Kiprusoff for the game-winner. I held faceoffs 21-14 and my PK unit was good, so I felt good about getting the point and was optimistic heading into OT.

Posted Image

The OT period started slow, but I slowly took control and kept the Flames away from my net. I got a handful of shots in the first 2 minutes and did a good job of keeping fresh players out there. As we approached 3 minutes, ironically it had been bad goaltending by Mason allowing the tie, and it was bad goaltending by Kiprusoff that allowed the win, as he saved a shot and swept the puck out right to Umberger, who tipped it back off his pads and into the net for the winner, sending the crowd home happy:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Shots were 6-1 in OT, giving me a 38-37 edge for the game. The final faceoff count was 24-16, and I was 1/5 on the PP while holding them off on their 3 tries.

Posted Image

This was a good win for me against a rugged team that was different than many I had recently played in terms of style. Iginla is a beast and though he scored early I fended him off for most of the rest of the game as Mason played pretty well down the stretch. Both teams got something out of the game and both earned it, so I don’t feel bad at all that Calgary got a point. At the 20 game mark I am 12-7-1, not great but not terrible, and this puts me into a large tie for the middle playoff positions in a very bunched up Western Conference. The segment report will be coming up, followed by the next game, which is a trip to play Brodeur and the pesky Devils in New Jersey. Until then, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where the final score was Columbus 3, Calgary 2 in OT.
