In this segment, I was 6-4-0, good for 12 points, and am 12-7-1 overall (6-4-1 H, 6-3-0 A) for 25 points and a jumble in the middle of the Western Conference. Results were: CLB 1, @CHI 3 ANA 3, @CLB 2 TOR 3, @CLB 2 CLB 2, @PHI 1 CHI 1, @CLB 6 WPG 2, @CLB 3 MIN 1, @CLB 3 CLB 2, @BOS 7 CLB 6, @NSH 1 CAL 2, @CLB 3 (OT) Goals were 30 GF, 24 GA in the segment and are 60 GF, 55 GA total. My power play sits 25/114, good for 21.9% and 1st in the league. On the PK I am 68/84, 81.0%, last in the league but better than usual for me. In faceoffs, I am currently 180370/735, so despite significant intra-game variation I am right around 50%. For team leaders, the Lethal Line dominates. Carter leads in goals with 11, followed by Nash with 10 and Prospal with 9. Carter leads in Assists with 13, also followed by Nash with 10 and Prospal with 9. For points then, Carter has 24 (11/13) and Nash (10/10) and Prospal (9/9) follow with 20 and 18, respectively, so all of the forwards on the top line are averaging almost a point per game. Wisniewski leads in +/- with +7, followed by the Lethal 3 at +6 each. Mason sits at 10-6 with a GAA of 2.576 and a S% of .917. Dekanich is playing similarly, with a 2-1 record, a GAA od 2.373 and a S% of .914. For league leaders, here are a couple of shots: The next segment features 5 home games and 2 division games, and is highlighted by a major road trip throughout Canada. Charter Member Posts: 391 Group: Members Member #38 Joined: April 6, 2011	Game 21: Columbus at New Jersey After a brief return home, I was back on the road after my overtime win over Calgary. It was off to New Jersey to begin the second quarter of the season against the Devils. New Jersey came in at 10-7-2 and on a roll at 7-3 in their last 10, good enough for 8th place in the Eastern Conference. I entered the game at 12-7-1, 6-4 in my last 10 and in a 5-way tie for 4th in the Western Conference with 25 points. Of course when one thinks of the Devils it starts with Brodeur, and I entered the game expecting the legendary goaltender to be a thorn in my side. I hoped to counter with Mason, who played well his last 2 times out and seemed to have gotten back on track after the disaster in Boston. So as I entered the Prudential Center, I was expecting a hard-nosed, grind it out low-scoring game. INJURIES: COLUMBUS: Wisniewski out NEW JERSEY: Zubris, Pelley, Larsson, Strahlman out; Hedberg fatigued GOALIES: COLUMBUS: Mason NEW JERSEY: Brodeur Well, when you’re wrong, you’re wrong. Far from a low-scoring, slug-it-out affair, this one turned out to be one of the wildest games I have ever played. The first 8 minutes went by benignly enough, but then things started to get interesting. First, Palmieri took a penalty for the Devils, setting me up with a power play: Now one of the things I have prided myself in this season so far is the increased discipline on special teams, such that I have only scored and only given up 1 shorthanded goal each. My puck control has been much better on the power play and my kill % is up despite not getting many chances shorthanded. All this is a prelude of course to what must now be obvious, which is that Kovalchuk, who was a monster all game, collected the puck in the corner and fed a cross-ice pass to Josefson, who banged in a shorthanded one-timer to give the Devils a 1-0 lead against my stunned power play unit: In the past I might have panicked, but in this case I just took the ensuing face-off and pushed it up ice. Nash got the puck and fired a sweet feed to Prospal, who blistered one from distance that beat Brodeur and knotted the game at 1, evening the score on my power play: The next 4 minutes went by without any goals, but both teams were getting chances and neither goaltender looked sharp…at all. Not even close in fact. At the 13 minute mark Calvert was whistled for hooking and I was down a man for the first time: Despite a monumental effort by the Devils to take the lead, I fought them off with a couple of decent saves and some timely clearances. Still I was skating backwards fast so it was no surprise that shortly after the power play ended, Clarkson fired a shot that Elias slammed in off the rebound to give the Devils a 2-1 lead with less than 5 to play in the period: Things were just starting to heat up though. First, at the 16 minute mark, Nash got the puck down low, hit a shot off of Brodeur, then basically jammed it in around his pads for an unassisted marker than knotted the score at 2 with 4 to play: 2 quick penalties followed, as Carter and Sykora were both sent off within seconds of each other, setting up some extended 4-on-4: I was able to take advantage of the open ice just 30 seconds later, as Umberger hit the zone and then fed Methot, who was crashing the net from the point. The resulting goal made it 3-2 Jackets with less than 2 to go before the break: Undaunted, the Devils pressed on, but when my penalty ended and I was on an abbreviated power play, I was thinking I had a good chance to establish a lead. Alas, the Devils had other ideas, and with less than 30 seconds left in the period Elias found Tedenby with a perfect cross-ice feed for a second short-handed goal past a shocked power play unit, knotting the score at 3 heading to the first intermission: As the first horn sounded, both teams needed to regroup, especially defensively. Shots were 11-8 Devils, but the score was tied at 3 and faceoffs were even at 8. Neither goaltender was worth much of anything that period, so hopefully things would look up in the second for Mason. I was shocked at how badly Brodeur was playing so I wanted to test him early in the second. I would get my chance to do so early, as Fraser took a penalty 3 minutes in and I was back up a man, which hadn’t exactly been an advantage yet: Thankfully this time I was able to cash in, as Johnson found Carter with a great feed in front, and the center banged it home to give me a 4-3 lead in just 30 seconds of power play time: The Devils again fought off my attempt to take control of the game, as the pesky home side was back on level terms just a minute later when Elias again found Tedenby for a goal much like his first: The Devils then came all the way back to take the lead, as Clarkson took a blocked shot and stuffed it past Mason from close range for an unassisted goal and a 5-4 lead at the 7 minute mark: Stunned, at this point I actually decided to try and play some defense, or else I was going to be in big trouble. The Devils did the same, and for the rest of the period both teams played with good discipline and stayed out of the box. The Devils got almost all of the scoring chances for the remainder of the period, but Mason finally woke up some and turned away a handful of good chances. I managed to get to the second intermission with the score at 5-4, despite being outshot 15-4 in a period I was pretty thoroughly handled in. The third would be the key in this one. As I entered the third and Mason had settled down, I was renewed in my interest to put the test to Brodeur, who still wasn’t playing all that well. Some early aggressive looks at the net paid off at the 4 minute mark, as Nash found Carter for his second close-range goal on a slick backhand to tie the game at 5: A minute later, Boulton was headed to the box for hooking, and I was back on the man advantage, a situation that had thus far resulted in 2 goals for each team: This time I was decisive in my puck movement around the zone, and eventually Umberger set up Johansen with a nice feed to the middle that the young forward buried to give me a 6-5 lead at the 7 minute mark: The Devils would get a chance for another quick answer as Umberger was headed to the box just 2 minutes later: However my team came up with likely its best effort of the night to kill then penalty despite heave pressure from the Devils. Mason turned a way a few shots and I battled hard for the puck to get a couple of good clearances. At the end of the power play, the Devils were a bit disheveled as they tried to switch out their lines and reset their lineup. I took advantage of this and Nash found Umberger in front from the close wing and the result was a 7-5 lead with just 8 minutes to play: Finally with some breathing room it was time to play defense as the Devils tried desperately to get back in it. Their increase in aggression resulted in a penalty on Josefson at the 14 minute mark, and it appeared I was ready to finally get the win: However towards the end of the power play Prospal took a sloppy penalty and the Devils had one more chance to make it interesting with 4 to go: It wasn’t to be though, as I killed off the penalty and the remaining time on the clock, and at the final horn I had a wild 7-5 victory against one of the league’s all-time best goaltenders: Shots were 16-1 Devils in the third, 42-23 overall for the game. I had a big edge in hits and a slight edge in face-offs (21-19). I was 3/5 on the power play and held them to 0/4, but of course they also got 2 shorthanded goals on me, so most of the stats were pretty even. This was definitely one of the more crazy and interesting games I have played since I started my first season 3 iterations ago. It was all the more surprising as both goaltenders had been playing well and Brodeur is of course a legend. Still I was able to overcome the see-saw of emotions and momentum in this game to take control in the third by going 3-0 in the decisive period. I did a decent job staying out of the box, though my power play was horrible as I gave up 2 goals shorthanded. Still, I scored 3 on the man advantage and that was enough to keep me in it. I guess I’m most proud of being able to shut down the Devils for the final 30 minutes after giving up 5 in the first 30. In any event, it goes without saying the defense needs to be better, and as I head back home to take on Sabres and Ryan Miller, I am going to really have to make some improvements in the back line. We’ll see if Wisniewski is back yet or not, as his absence really seemed to hurt me. Charter Member Posts: 391 Group: Members Member #38 Joined: April 6, 2011	As promised, here are the Western Conference standings through 21 games: Game 22: Buffalo at Columbus Well…after expecting a defensive battle and getting a shootout in NJ, I returned home to face a…supposedly…very tough goaltender for the second game in a row, as I took on Buffalo and Ryan Miller. The Sabres entered struggling at 9-11-1, 5-5 in their last 10 and 12th in the Eastern Conference. As you can see above, my 13-7-1 record is good for a tie for 4th in the West, and at 7-3 in my last 10 I’m finally getting back to playing some winning hockey. With the lower lines faltering somewhat, I decided to give Dan Byers a shot on line 4 (as he has gotten in real life), sending Calvert temporarily back to the bench. The other big change in this one is that Mason is fatigued, so Dekanich has to go up against Miller. So heading in I expected defense to be at a premium and goals to be in short supply, but heading to the Nationwide Arena I was unsure what to expect because of the last game. INJURIES: BUFFALO: Stafford, Myers out; Gaustad DTD COLUMBUS: Wisniewski out; Mason fatigued GOALIES: BUFFALO: Miller COLUMBUS: Dekanich In this one it was obvious early that I was going to get the defensive battle I was expecting last game. In the first period I controlled the puck and the tempo for good stretches because the Sabres headed to the box several times, but neither team really got many shots going. The first penalty came less than 5 minutes in, as Gaustad was sent off for roughing: On the ensuing power play, I got a couple of good chances but Miller was sharp as a tack and I was unable to break through. Right as we were returning to even strength, McCormick took another roughing penalty, and I was right back a man up. Shortly afterwards, Ehrhoff was sent off for a silly hooking penalty, and I was up 2 men for most of 2 minutes: Again I controlled the puck, and again I got some good looks, moreso than I normally get on 5-on-3s. I kept the puck in the zone for almost the entire 2 minutes, but they blocked a couple of shots and Miller was still strong, and I ended up with nothing. The rest of the period was a defensive struggle. I did a fantastic job of keeping the puck away from Mason, who had almost nothing to do all period. At the 13 minute mark the Sabres took one more penalty, as Kaleta went for tripping: However this time the Sabres basically spent 2 minutes clearing the puck and I was completely shut down. The rest of the period went by quickly, and at the first intermission it was scoreless. Shots were 9-2 Jackets, though Buffalo had a 9-4 faceoff edge. To quote Herman’s Hermits, second verse…same as the first, as the second period was almost a carbon copy of the first period. Not only were goals at a premium, but shots were as well, as both defenses didn’t allow much of anything. Buffalo got the first good chance of the period, as Boll headed to the box for hooking and they were up a man for the first time: Buffalo was beginning to establish some momentum in the offensive zone, so it was time for Dekanich to earn his pay at this point. He made a couple of good saves on this opportunity and was every bit as good as Miller had been. After a couple of strong clearances, we were back at even strength but Buffalo continued to control the tempo and the puck. However at the 12 minute mark, McCormick went again for hooking, and I was back up a man: My top lines were getting tired and I did little on the power play, but more importantly in squelched the momentum that Buffalo had been building in my zone. When Leino took an interference call with 5 to go and shortly after the last one ended, their momentum was officially dead and I had one more chance to score in the period: Miller was having none of it though, and the defense blocked most of my shot attempts anyway. The rest of the period flew by and we were still scoreless at the second intermission. Shots were 11-5 Buffalo in that period though I had saved myself in my zone a couple of times by narrowing the faceoff gap. Whoever controlled the third would likely win this game. The third was every bit as much of a battle as the first 2 periods had been. This period had a playoff atmosphere, and every inch of territory was disputed. Back and forth we went, and neither team was able to get the upper hand tempo-wise. Finally, at the 7 minute mark, one of my lower lines broke through with a rare but critical goal. Vermette found Clitsome at the point, who fired a quick pass to the corner to Dorsett. He cleverly banged in a one-time backhander to finally make it 1-0 with just 12 minutes to play: It had taken a Herculean effort to beat Miller once, and I didn’t expect to again, so with the onus on them to even the score, I went full defense mode. With Dekanich playing as well as he was, it seemed like the smartest thing to do. Though I got very few shots the rest of the game, I did a good job of moving the puck, changing behind the play, and otherwise keeping Buffalo from setting anything up. Most of their attacks were one or two players, and I always had enough back to get in the way. With 2 to go, they pulled their goalie, and they did get 2 really good chances. Dekanich did a full pad stack on one occasion and came up with an unbelievable leg save. My defense did the rest, as I was able to clear without icing 2 times, which effectively ran out the clock. As the horn sounded, I had one of my hardest fought and most satisfying victories, 1-0 over a premium goaltender: Shots were just 5 apiece in the third, 19-18 Jackets for the game. They only had one power play chance, and though I went 0/6 it did keep them from establishing offensive momentum and I quickly closed the open holes that New Jersey had found shorthanded. Faceoffs ended 20-13 Buffalo. These are always fun games for me, as I love the playoff atmosphere, old school, low-scoring games. This one was really heavily contested at every turn, and both goaltenders made some great saves, though there were not a ton of shots. It took a monumental bit of passing and one-timing to beat Miller at all, and I probably could have played 3 more periods and not beaten him again. So I was extremely happy to escape with a win and move on to my next game, which will be a home date with division foe St. Louis. It will be my first look at the Blues in 2012 and we always seem to have spirited games like this one was, so hopefully tonight’s game will have prepared me for it. My road trip through Canada looms, so it is important for me to get results in my home games here, which made this one all the more important. At 8-2 in my last 10 and 14-7-1 overall, I am still tied for 4th in the Western Conference and have a chance to move up the standings at the crowded top. Standing in my way this time out is a struggling St. Louis side that entered the game at 9-7-6, just 5-5 in their last 10 and out of the playoff slots at 11th. Still they are a division foe and they have Halak in net, which means I knew I was going to have my work cut out for me in this one. My defense was obviously really good last game and I was hoping to carry that momentum into this one, as Wisniewski returns from his brief absence to sit on the top line, dropping Johnson to line 3, and Mason returns after getting a much needed rest. I hit the road for a 4 game sweep through Canada after this, so I wanted to get points out of my last home game for a while. Off to the Nationwide Arena to see if I was able to. INJURIES: ST. LOUIS: Colaiacovo, Langenbrunner, Stewart out COLUMBUS: Dekanich fatigued GOALIES: ST. LOUIS: Halak COLUMBUS: Mason It didn’t take long for things to get going, and they didn’t get going well early for me. Short of the 4 minute mark, McDonald took a roughing penalty, and it looked promising as I was up a man: However I was unable to generate much on the power play, and after Halak made a good save and the defense blocked a couple of shots, I could tell they had some momentum. Sure enough, shortly after the penalty ended, Polak found Backes with a sweet feed down low, and he managed to hit a one-time backhander past Mason to give the Blues a 1-0 lead 6 minutes in: On the ensuing faceoff the Blues took the puck again, and after a shot at Mason it bounced off of him and right to Methot, who couldn’t turn in time to prevent putting it in his own net. I hate these goals, but at least there aren’t many in this game, unlike many others. In any event, Steen was credited with the easiest goal of his life and I was quickly down 2-0: I was a bit stunned but stayed the course and didn’t panic. Over the next 8 minutes I was able to get some pressure on and keep fresh legs on the ice better than the Blues did. At the 14 minute mark Huskins took a penalty and it looked like my pressure was paying off as I was finally back up a man and had a good chance: With the faceoff coming in the Blues zone, I wasted absolutely no time. I grabbed it and Tyutin fired a rocket pass to Vermette, who had won the faceoff and cut to the net. He banged it past Halak to cut the lead to 2-1 in just 5 seconds: I kept the pressure on and 2 minutes later I was able to even the score with a rare goal by a lower line. Umberger, who has been playing well of late, fired a cross-ice pass to Pahlsson, which found him perfectly situated for a back-door one-timer past Halak to even the score with less than 4 to go in the frame: It was at this point that things began to come apart on me however. Shortly after the goal, Huselius was whistled for a joke of a penalty that quite frankly was so ridiculous there wasn’t even a shot of it to be captured. My PK units worked hard and killed it off, but almost as soon as the penalty was over Wisniewski was whistled for roughing, and I was back down a man in the final minute: The Blues cashed in quickly, as Perron fired a quick shot at the net off the faceoff and somewhere in the morass in front Crombeen chipped it in for a power play goal in just 7 seconds to give the Blues the lead heading into the intermission: Shots were 12-10 Blues in the period, and they also held a narrow 8-7 faceoff advantage, though they had grabbed a couple of critical ones. I wasn’t in a terrible position heading into the second, but I also needed to stay on target and not give up another if I wanted to keep right in it with a chance to win. Early momentum would be key in the second. The first half of the second period was a stalemate, as neither team could really get anything going. This one definitely had a next goal takes control kind of feel, so both teams knew it would be the most critical marker of the game. At the 9 minute mark, a ridiculous sequence of penalties began that saw another player sent to the box almost every single minute until the end of the period. I really don’t need to go into great detail here, just imagine that as soon as one guy goes off for one team, someone for the other team is whistled for looking at a guy wrong. This resulted in a ton of short power plays interspersed with 4-on-4: The key part of this was that the Blues owned the run of play during the entire sequence. They completely dominated me, pummeling Mason with shot after shot after shot not only on their power play chances, but also on the 4-on-4 opportunities. I always seemed to be one step behind as they basically just fired at will. Mason was up to the challenge, turning away shot after shot in a desperate attempt to keep me in it while my defense tried to regain any sort of footing. Late in the period, during the final 4-on-4 sequence, the Blues finally got that next coveted marker, as Jackman found Arnott with a pretty cross-ice feed that was too much for Mason to overcome. The resulting 4-2 score sent us to the second intermission with the Blues appearing to be in full control. Shots were 21-7 in the period, as I was unable to do anything but hope and chase. Mason did his best, but really the 4-2 deficit really sat on my shoulders as I was unable to do anything with the puck the entire period. The third seemed almost like an anti-climax, as scoring 2 to tie or 3 to win against Halak on this night seemed like too tall of an order. I ratcheted up my physical play in an attempt to control the puck, and though it was fun crushing Blues all over the ice, it didn’t really help me any. At the 6 minute mark Dorsett was called for boarding and I was down a man again: My PK unit was really good this game after giving up that first one, and I was able to kill the penalty off. Still the Blues had wrestled back momentum and were once again pulverizing Mason with shots, and at the halfway point they put any doubt away as Berglund found Oshie in front for a nice chip in from close in to make it 5-2 with half a period to go: For the rest of the game I more or less just beat the crap out of the Blues all over the ice. I got away with it for a while, but at the 16 minute mark Wisniewski got whistled for roughing for a terrifying hit along the boards and it was go time shortly afterwards: A game like this couldn’t end without a fight, so Dorsett did the honors against Crombeen, who had scored earlier: Crombeen held his own initially, but Dorsett was relentless and landed about 10 blows to the head in a row to finally knock him out: The rest of the game just sort of played out. I killed the penalty initially, then as time waned I pulled back one consolation marker, as a series of diagonal cross-ice feeds set Johansen in such a good position and so close to the net he jammed it past Halak and replay didn’t even catch it: In the end though, it was the Blues who celebrated a huge road win over a divisional opponent, which could catapult them back into the playoff chase: Shots were 15-11 Blues in the third, 48-28 for the game, a gigantic difference. I did hold them to 1/8 on the power play, but went just 1/5 myself and never got anything going. Faceoffs were pretty even at 17-16 and I think I piled up more hits than I ever have, but it did me little good as all of my momentum came to a screeching halt. So instead of piling more points up and heading to Canada on a high note, I crashed and burned against the worst team in the division and now head out with a loss. The early hole really hurt me because even though I evened the game back up, I was always fighting up hill. This one was not Mason’s fault as my defense just couldn’t stop or even slow the barrage of shots. It’s hard to believe this is the same team that just played a 1-0 game and gave up less than 20 shots, but it points to why this game is so great because there is so much variability between games. Now it’s time to head to Canada where I will face Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Montreal. Those are never easy trips and I expect my position in the standings might suffer. However if I can hold my own and get 4-5 points or so, I should still be right in the thick of it returning home. Charter Member Posts: 391 Group: Members Member #38 Joined: April 6, 2011	Game 24: Columbus at Vancouver So it's been a really ugly couple of months for me, but I am finally on the mend and able to get back to trying to get my season going again. The first step is to fill in all the reports of games I have played thus far, starting with this one. Recall last time I was at home for a brief game against the Blues before I headed out on my Canadian road trip, of which this is the first game, in Vancouver against the Canucks. Vancouver entered the game at 13-5-5, T3 in the Western Conference, but sliding a bit at 6-4 in their last 10. After hitting a trough I have rebounded nicely recently, sitting at 8-2 in my last 10 and at 14-8-1, good for a T5 in the Western Conference. Mason was between the pipes against the mercurial Roberto Luongo, so I expected this to either be a classic or a mistake-fest, with little in between. The Canucks are hurting some, so a lot of this one would depend on the goaltending play. To the Rogers Arena in Vancouver to see how my road trip would start. INJURIES: COLUMBUS: Dekanich fatigued VANCOUVER: Higgins, Kesler, Raymond, Edler, Lapierre, Oreskovich out; HSedin DTD GOALIES: COLUMBUS: Mason VANCOUVER: Luongo In the first couple of minutes, I was already headed to the box, as Vermette was whistled for holding and I was quickly down a man: However my defense came to play and I was quickly able to turn the Canucks away. About 5 minutes of back-and-forth ensued before Vancouver got their first whistle of the day, a hooking call on Ballard: I got a couple of good shots on the power play but it became obvious that I was up against the good Luongo this night. Over the next 8 minutes the offense picked up and both team got some good looks, with both netminders coming up with some key stops. With less than 5 to go in the period, Dorsett was whistled for hooking, and the Canucks had another power play: With just seconds left (4, to be exact) on the man advantage Malhotra put the puck on net and Burrows chipped a rebound home so fast that replay didn't acknowledge it, so I didn't get a shot of it. It still counted nonetheless, and as the first horn sounded the Canucks had a 1-0 edge. The offese was lively on both sides with shots being 13-11 Canucks, and though I was down in faceoffs I was passing the puck well. This was an entertaining game and I couldn't wait to start the second. Sadly for me, the second got off to a terrible start. The Canucks took control at the outset and just 23 seconds in, Ballard found Samuelsson with a nice angled cross-ice feed, which he backhanded in to double the lead to 2-0: Over the next 5 minutes I was holding my own but this was becoming a defensive game, which obviously favored the team with the lead and the hot goaltender. At the 6 minute mark Nash was sent for hooking and this one appeared to be getting away from me: However I was able to fight off the Vancouver power play and a frustrated Bieska took a penalty towards the end, giving me a slight advantage at 4-on-4 leading into a power play: The advantage (such as it was) would be short-lived, however, as Carter was whistled in the next minute and we were back to 4-on-4: The rest of the period was much like a chess match with both teams setting up the board, but neither really taking any pieces. I held my own defensively but failed to get much offensive pressure on and I had trouble keeping my lines fresh. In the final minute Vermette would be called for hooking, leaving me at a bigger disadvantage heading into the 3rd: As it stood when the whistle sounded, I was down 2-0, which normally isn't terrible but it is very hard to make up goals against this team. Shots were 8-7 Vancouver in a period where they were really starting to dictate the tempo. I was going to have to weather the storm to start the third and then try and get something going early, or I was never going to have a chance to make up 2 goals. I was able to get past the power play to open the third and over the next 5 minutes I was desperate to try and do anything. I got a sliver of hope 8 minutes in when Weise was whistled for hooking and I could get my top power play unit out there one more time: This time I was finally able to break through with Nash at the point, and I was back in it at 2-1 with half a period to play: However, for the final stanza I was totally stonewalled. Vancouver took the puck and then never let me get it again. I was defending the entire time and could barely ever clear the puck, much less do anything with it. It was a masterful performance, and as the horn sounded the Canucks had a hard fought but convincing 2-1 win: Shots were 12-3 Vancouver in the third, making it 33-21 for the game. I held them to 1/5 on the PP and was 1/3 myself, and faceoffs ended 13-11 Vancouver, so I really held my own in key areas but was never able to break through against Luongo. It wasn't a terrible showing, but I was unable to generate any points and I head to Calgary on a 2 game losing streak, trying to rebound. Their tough, physical style seems to always draw me into a game I am uncomfortable playing and that I usually lose. So I headed to Calgary after dropping a close decision to the Canucks and looking for some points after losing my last 2. Playing against Kiprusoff is never a fun task, and if he gets off to a fast start I am usually in for a long night. The last time I beat him I jumped on him early and then held off a rally over the final 2 periods. Mason played well last game but didn't pick up the W, so it was important for me to have a good showing to keep his confidence up, as we still have several games left on this trip. I entered the game at 14-9-1, 7-3 in my last 10 and good for 7th in the Western Conference. The Flames entered at just 9-8-6, struggling at 3-7 in their last 10 and 13th in the West. So it was against this backdrop that I entered the Scotiabank Saddledome in front of nearly 20,000 to see how I would handle the tough style of the Flames. INJURIES: COLUMBUS: None CALGARY: Butler, Carson, Hagman, Bourque, Ivanans, Backlund out GOALIES: COLUMBUS: Mason VANCOUVER: Kiprusoff Early on it seemed the typical Calgary aggression would cost them, as Iginla headed off less than a minute in, immediately giving me a power play chance: Despite a couple of good shots, the Flames easily turned me away in what would become a theme for the night, and we were back to full strength. Shortly afterwards, a pair of whistles brought us some 4-on-4, as first Nikitin and then Jokinen were sent off: This is the spot where Calgary began to take control. First, a scrum in front shortly after my penalty ended resulted in a Moss goal (though it looked like MacMillan tapped it in) to give the Flames a 1-0 lead on what was credited as a shorthanded goal: Just 2 minutes later, MacMillan got credit for one, as he took a nice feed from Jokinen and jammed it past Mason to make it 2-0 at the 8 minute mark: At the 9 minute mark, MacKenzie and Tanguay were sent off within 5 seconds of each other, resulting in an extended 4-on-4 period: Nothing came of it, however, and after returning to even strength Sarich would give me one more power play in the period at the 12 minute mark: Again I was repeatedly turned away on the man advantage, and the rest of the period went by in frustrating fashion. As the horn sounded, I was down 2-0 despite 4 power play chances and leading in faceoffs 10-4. Shots were 11-7 Calgary, but I had gotten some good looks. All I could hope was that I could cash some of those in heading into the second. Early on it looked like I might get back in it, as Moss went off at the 40 second mark and I was up a man less than a minute in for the second straight period: However Nash was too aggressive chasing the puck and was shown the penalty door short of the 90 second mark, negating the rally: At the 5 minute mark I got another shot when Kostopoulos was sent off for hooking, giving me my 6th power play chance in the first 25 minutes: I again failed to capitalize as I just could'nt beat Kiprusoff no matter what I did, and as the game reached the halfway point, a switch flipped. It was evident that Calgary had taken my best shots of the evening and hadn't conceded a goal, so with that confidence they went sharply on the offensive, with devastating results. First, Stempniak knocked in a rebound off a Babchuk shot to make it 3-0 at the halfway point: A minute later, Iginla found Glencross with a sweet feed, and he put it in to make it 4-0: A minute after that, Stempniak found Tanguay with a nice cross-ice feed in front, and he one-timed it past a tired defense to make it 5-0: At this point, one would likely yank the goalie, but I had another game the next night and wanted to keep Dekanich fresh. So Mason stayed in, and at the 16 minute mark Stemniak put in another from a sharp angle to make it 6-0: At this point the game was lost obviously, so the only thing left to do was drop the gloves. Dorsett did the honors with Kostopoulos: Both guys landed several heavy blows, but the fight ended up as a draw. 2 minutes later Giordano was sent off, and I had one final power play chance in the period: Nothing came of it as the horn sounded, leaving me to leave the ice with my tail between my legs down 6-0. Shots were 16-7 Calgary in the period, as they just seemed to play perfectly in the second half. Well on my way to 0/7 on the power play, there wasn't much to do but play it out in the third. Not surprisingly, that's pretty much what happened, as I was just looking to get out of the arena. The period went by quickly. The Flames put one more in, as Moss got his second at the 13:30 mark: A couple of penalties in the last 2 minutes didn't really amount to anything, as both teams were anxious to find the dressing room: As the final horn sounded, Kiprusoff had his shutout, and I was blown out of the Saddledome yet again: Shots were 15-6 Calgary in the third, 42-20 overall in a game I was never even close in. I held them to 0/3 on the power play but went 0/8 myself, and though I won faceoffs 23-14 I never really controlled the puck. This game was a disaster from start to finish, as once my power play didn't get anything going the Flames just ramped up the heat and blew me out of the building. Mason was awful but he will be sitting next game anyway. The loss pushes my losing streak to 3 as I fall back towards the pack trying to climb into playoff position. Hopefully the next outing in Edmonton will be different, but so far it is no points in 2 games on the trip and all I did tonight was bottom out. Maybe Dekanich can get me going next game, we'll see.
