Game 46: Nashville at Columbus

Posted Image

So after beating back the Edmonton Oilers to get back on track it was time to conclude the homestand with the hated Nashville Predators. The Preds entered the game ahead of me in the division at 24-13-9 (6-4), 6th overall in the Western Conference. I entered right behind them at 26-16-3 (7-3) and in 7th. We conclude our season series before the All Star break, which is kind of weird, with this being the 5th meeting of the season. We split the first 4, each taking a game in each building, as I won the first 2 games and the Preds have won the last 2. Rinne was in net for the Preds, so I expected a tough matchup in net. Sanford was tired from last game (presumably from watching the puck go into the net so many times), so Dekanich was back in for the Jackets. The loss of Wisniewski was profound in the first game, so I was hoping that the second game would turn out better as the back line got into a rhythm with each other. To the Nationwide Arena for the last time for a while to see if I could head out on the road on a winning note.

INJURIES:

NASHVILLE: Weber, Blum out; Bergfors DTD; Lindback fatigued
COLUMBUS: Wisniewski out; Sanford fatigued

GOALIES:

NASHVILLE: Rinne
COLUMBUS: Dekanich

This game was much different than the last one, as goals were difficult to come by. The game opened with a penalty sequence within the first 3 minutes, where I took one, Nashville followed, and I took another, all about a minute or so apart from each other, 2 of which are shown here:

Neither team was able to score on the cycling through of special teams, but the Predators had a firm grip on the puck and got the much better chances. Luckily Dekanich was not a sieve like Sanford was last game, and he turned away shot after shot. At 7 minutes Prospal took a hooking call and the Preds had another chance to take the lead:

Posted Image

My penalty kill was good, but really it was all about Dekanich in the first period, as he repeatedly frustrated Erat and the Preds. The second half of the period went by pretty quickly, and I was basically unable to generate anything all period. The horn sounded with the game scoreless but the Preds holding a 15-4 shot advantage and 3 power plays thus far. I was doing OK on faceoffs, but clearly the way things were going was not a sustainable model for me. Dekanich couldn't keep saving shots forever, so I needed to come up with a radical change in plan and momentum in the second if I wanted to stay in the game.

Posted Image

For the first 6 minutes or so it appeared that the second would be much like the first. Nashville didn't quite dominate as much as they had, but they still kept me at bay and held the puck for significant stretches. At 7 minutes Hillen took a questionable roughing minor and I had a chance to get into the game some:

Posted Image

It was the opening I needed. 15 seconds off the faceoff, Nash moved the puck and then Johnson found Prospal in front for a one-timer past a screen of defenders to give me a 1-0 lead:

Posted Image

A minute later Hornqvist took a minor and it looked like I was well on my way to taking control of the game:

Posted Image

However the Predator kill was quite good on this occasion and I was turned away despite getting a couple of good looks. As the period continued I was having a good share of the puck and I was taking the chances as the Preds had in the first. Rinne was playing well, but towards the end of the period the game broke wide open. First at 16 minutes Tootoo was sent off for a vicious (and unsurprising) cross-check:

Posted Image

I quickly made the Preds pay for that hit, as Johansen found Umberger with a cross-ice pass, and R.J. deposited it past Rinne one-time to double the lead to 2-0 on the power play with 3 left in the second:

Posted Image

Just 15 seconds later I took total control as Prospal off the faceoff found Nash with a sweet feed in front, and the streaking captain hammered it past a helpless Rinne to give me a 3-0 lead:

Posted Image

I still wasn't done. Tootoo decided to get involved again, and got himself run for roughing with less than 2 to go in the period:

Posted Image

I made them pay one final time, as Prospal found Vermette cutting to the front of the net on a line change, and the center chipped it past Rinne to make the score 4-0 heading into the break:

Posted Image

In just 4 minutes I had taken total control of the game. Shots were 12-6 Jackets in the period, but that was good for a 4-0 lead. I blew them out in faceoffs in the period and basically controlled the puck for the entire second half. Barring a miracle by the Preds, I was well on my way to a victory.

Posted Image

I took a more defensive approach as the third began, and for the first half of the third period not much happened. I did a good job of moving the puck and keeping my lines cycling, and though I got only a handful of chances, I really didn't need more goals. At 12 minutes Carter took a tripping minor, and the Preds had a final chance to get back into it with time left:

Posted Image

My kill turned them away once more with some deft clearances, and by the time there was just 5 minutes to go, the only question was whether I would preserve the shutout. Alas, that was answered just a short time later, as a tired line couldn't get off the ice and Tootoo got a dash of revenge, fedding a cross-ice pass to Halischuk at point blank range to spoil the shutout:

Posted Image

Despite the downer of losing the shutout, the Preds would get no closer, and as the final horn sounded I had coasted to victory on another strong game by Dekanich:

Posted Image

Shots were just 7 apiece in the relatively uneventful third, 28-23 Preds for the game. I controlled faceoffs 22-15, but the real key were the special teams, where I was 3/4 on the PP and held them to 0/5.

Posted Image

This was a win I badly needed, as it put me at 3-1 on my 4 game homestand heading into a brutal stretch on the road that bookends the All Star break. The first 2 games on the next trip are at Detroit and Nashville, 2 places I almost never win, and I also have to go back to California for the 3 game trip again. If I can go 3-3 on that trip I will consider myself lucky so it was critical to get these 6 points now. This was a good team effort and I was happy with all phases of my game, and I also assured myself at least a split with Nashville this year, which is also a rarity. It is on to Hockeytown USA next. Until then, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where the final score was Columbus 4, Nashville 1.

Game 47: Columbus at Detroit

Posted Image

Well after taking 3 of 4 at home it was time to head back out on the road for a 6 game trip that would span both sides of the All Star break. The first 3 games are at Detroit, Nashville, and Tampa, so they figure to be difficult tests, and the last 3 are in California, where I just went 2-1 but are against 3 very tough teams as well. First off we start in Hockeytown USA, where the Wings entered the game leading the division and second in the Conference at 26-13-8 (4-6). Following my latest win I was 26-16-3 (7-3), tied for 6th and threatening the top 3 or 4 spots. Detroit came in without several of their heavy hitters so I had some hope for a result in this one. This is the third meeting of the season thus far, as we split the first 2. Sanford was back in net as Dekanich was fatigued, so hopefully he will play quite a bit better than he did against Edmonton. Puck possession and staying out of the box are the two biggest keys against Detroit, so it’s off to the Joe Louis Arena to see if I could steal one in one of the most difficult venues to win in all of professional sports.

INJURIES:

COLUMBUS: Wisniewski out; Dekanich fatigued
DETROIT: Bertuzzi, Filppula, Lidstrom, Stuart, Ericsson out

GOALIES:

COLUMBUS: Sanford
DETROIT: Howard

It didn’t take long at all for me to be reminded why Detroit is a tough place to play and why my goaltending situation is shaky. Just 38 seconds into the game some good possession from the Wings led to Hudler finding Nyquist, and in a familiar pattern he beat Sanford high as he went down to the ice, giving the Wings a very quick 1-0 lead:

Posted Image

I actually thought about sitting Sanford immediately and sending him back to the minors after one period, but I decided against it to see what he had for the rest of the game. He started immediately to play much better and settle in, so I felt like I was still going to be in decent shape at the back. At 4 minutes Carter went for hooking and I was down a man for the first time:

Posted Image

PKs against the Wings are always a dicey affair, but I was able to clear the puck a few times and collect a couple of rebounds off of saves, and as a result I fought off a second goal and we were back to even strength. Former Blue Jacket Mike Commodore got a little too rough at 7 minutes, giving me my first man advantage:

Posted Image

Despite the usual and recent success of my power play, the Wings had little trouble dispatching me for 2 minutes and even got in a couple of good shots shorthanded that Sanford had to turn away. At 12 minutes the Wings doubled the lead, as White hit a screamer that tailed upwards and beat Sanford off the crossbar and in for a 2-0 lead, putting me squarely behind the proverbial 8-ball:

Posted Image

Just a minute late Commodore gave me one more shot to get back in it when he was whistled for obstruction hooking in a giant pile-up in front of the Detroit net:

Posted Image

However again I was turned away rather easily. The rest of the period went by quickly and at the end of one the Wings were firmly in control by a 2-0 score. Shots were 11-7 Detroit, though it seemed worse than that, and they were absolutely killing me on faceoffs to the tune of 8-0, so they controlled the action for most of the period. I needed a serious reboot in the second if anything was going to change.

Posted Image

Things did change early in the second, at least in terms of puck control and offensive chances. I pushed hard to get back in the game right off the opening faceoff, and the pressure drew a roughing call on Abdelkader less than a minute into the period:

Posted Image

I wasn’t able to put a puck past Howard, but this time I beat the defense and tested him a few times. I was still controlling the action at the 5 minute mark when Kronwall took a hooking call and put me back up a man:

Posted Image

The power play was a carbon copy of the last one, as I was unable to score but I did put some pucks on Howard and forced a couple of tremendous saves. As we hit the halfway point it seemed only a matter of time before I could break through, and 13 minutes I finally did on a shift change, as Boll had the puck deep and fed the oncoming Nash at the blue line, and he battered it in to cut the deficit to 2-1 with plenty of game left:

Posted Image

I tested Howard another handful of times before the period ended, but I wasn’t able to break through with the tying marker. Still, at 2-1 I was right back in the game, and shots were 15-7 Jackets in the period, so I was more in control of what was going on. I was still down 19-2 in faceoffs, so I was having trouble controlling the puck initially, but long runs of play were favoring me was we headed to the third.

Posted Image

In the first half of the third period, I continued to push and get good chances to tie the game. A series of offside calls unfortunately slowed me down considerably, but at least I was doing a little better with faceoffs this period so I was still getting my chances. Unfortunately I was somewhat derailed by a hooking call on Dorsett at the 12 minute mark:

On the power play the Wings didn’t score, but they peppered Sanford with shots, and from this point on the game switched again, with the Wings holding all of the momentum. I had a terrible time trying to get the puck and it was made doubly hard to get fresh players on the ice while in possession. I made one final push at the equalizer, but Prospal was whistled for hooking in a scrum with a minute to go, sealing my fate:

The final horn sounded and Howard celebrated a good performance and the Red Wings had a hard-fought victory:

Shots were 12-8 Detroit in the third, making it 30 apiece in the game. Neither team scored on the power play, as I went 0/4 and held them to 0/2. They dominated faceoffs 28-10, but at least I made a game of that with a 9-8 third period tally.

Unlike the San Jose game earlier in the week, this is the type of game I have no issue with losing. I played hard, they played hard, the officiating was consistent, and I had plenty of chances to tie the game, but Howard just came up with big saves. I was happy with my ability to push back in the second after getting down early, and Sanford really played a good game after starting off a tad shaky. I would have been nice to snag a point here, but at the end of the season you don’t look back at losses in Detroit as reasons you didn’t make the playoffs, so I’m not terribly upset. The next game out is at Nashville, which is also a very difficult place to win and is a notorious graveyard for the Blue Jackets. I got one win there earlier in the year, so I will try and bounce back and get some momentum heading into the break. Until then, goodnight from the Joe Louis Arena, where the final score was Detroit 2, Columbus 1.

Sorry for the multiple posts in one day, but I caught up on some games over the weekend...

Game 48: Columbus at Nashville

Posted Image

So after being unable to quite break through against Detroit, it was on to Nashville to face the Preds for the final time this season. I lead the season series 3-2, and this game in Nashville will be my last shot at taking points off of them and closing the standings. Despite beating them 2 games ago, Nashville still entered this game ahead of me in the standings, but just barely, at 25-14-9 (6-4), good for 5th in the Conference. After my loss in Detroit I was 27-17-3 (6-4), good for 7th and still in playoff position as well as just 2 points behind Nashville. I flipped back to Dekanich in this game, as his recent track record has been more consistent, and he was up against Rinne, who played well against me last time save the final 4 minutes of the second period. With just one more game after this before the All Star break, I wanted to try and get 2-3 more points before hitting California next. To the Bridgestone Arena for the final time to see if I could get back on the winning track.

INJURIES:

COLUMBUS: Wisniewski out
NASHVILLE: Bouillon, Suter, Sloan, Weber out; Smith fatigued

GOALIES:

COLUMBUS: Dekanich
NASHVILLE: Rinne

I just have to take a moment to marvel at this first period. Not only were there no goals and no penalties, but look at the faceoff count…there were no stoppages at all. No offsides, no pucks held by goalies, no icing, no nothing. I will likely never see that again in all of my time playing this game. It was a lot of fun cycling lines like that. Obviously the game was scoreless, and shots were 8-5 Nashville. Not much else to say, but it was a cool (and fast) period to play.

Posted Image

In the second things started looking much more familiar for a Nashville/Columbus game. Just a minute in Hornqvist took the first penalty, and I had the first power play of the game:

Posted Image

I was unable to score, and really wasn’t able to do much at all, as the Preds seemed to be in front of every shot and every puck I shot or passed seemed to get deflected. When we got back to even strength it didn’t take long for the whistle to sound again, as this time Methot went off at 5 minutes and the Preds had their first power play chance:

Posted Image

I was able to kill this one off, but the flurry of shots at Dekanich really set the tone for the rest of the game. As we hit the halfway point the game was slowly moving the direction of the Preds, as I couldn’t get the puck into their zone and I couldn’t do anything but ice it in my own. At about 11 minutes Pahlsson went off for tripping, and the Preds were back up a skater:

Posted Image

This time they left no doubt as to who was in control of the game, as it took just 19 seconds for Hornqvist to find Smithson for a one-timer and a 1-0 lead on the power play:

Posted Image

The final 9 minutes of the period was much the same as this in terms of momentum and pace. The Preds were seemingly in every passing lane right as I tried to move the puck and I was unable to get it out of my own zone. As I did finally start to work some momentum late Wilson took a hooking minor with just seconds left, which did give me a man advantage heading into the third but killed my momentum as I pushed for the tying goal before the break:

Posted Image

After 2 periods it was still anyone’s game at just 1-0, but it was clear I would need to produce a radical shift in the play in order to get back in it. Shots were 15-7 Nashville in the period and I was really unable to do anything except shoot from the blue line, as penetration into the Pred zone was almost impossible. I had some hope for the third but knew I would need to do something to shift the momentum quickly.

Posted Image

Unfortunately I was unable to do anything with my power play to start the period, so after a couple of minutes we were back to even strength and it looked like the road back would be very tough. It got even more difficult at 6 minutes when Legwand slid a perfect cross-ice feed to Kostitsyn at point blank range, and he chipped it in easily to double the lead to 2-0 with 14 to play:

Posted Image

For the next 10 minutes I desperately tried to find a way back in it, but the period was much like the second as the Predators ran a modified neutral zone trap to perfection. With 4 to play Brassard took a frustration holding penalty and I was down a man at a very inopportune time:

Posted Image

To add insult to injury, the Preds scored on the power play for the second time, as Geoffrion found Legwand for the clinching goal and a 3-0 lead that left no doubt as to the game’s outcome with 3 to play:

Posted Image

As with the game 2 days ago in reverse, the only question was whether the visiting team would get on the scoreboard or not. In this case Ekholm helped my cause when he took a stupid hooking penalty with just a minute to go:

Posted Image

As the Preds had done in Columbus, I spoiled the shutout on the power play with less than a minute to go when Prospal deposited a Nash pass for my only tally of the evening:

Posted Image

I would get no closer, and as the clock ran out Rinne had an impressive victory and the Preds had thoroughly dominated this one:

Posted Image

Shots were again 15-7 Nashville in the third, making it 38-19 for the game. I was 1/3 on the PP but allowed 2 in 3 tries. Faceoffs were even at 13-14 but played little role in the contest.

Posted Image

So for the second time in as many games the goaltending and defense were good by offensively I couldn’t do anything. I was due to have a slow spell as I had been pouring in goals recently, but this is a bad time for it because I could easily go 0-6 on this road trip and really be up against it for the Playoffs with just 30 games to go by the end. Dekanich played well so I was happy with that, but offensively I have been awful the last 2 games and in this one I barely made a dent until the very end. The final game before the All Star break is at Tampa, so I have one more chance to secure some points before I head to California after the break to open the second part of the season. Until then, goodnight from the Bridgestone Arena, where the final score in a one-sided game was Nashville 3, Columbus 1.

Game 49: Columbus at Tampa Bay

Posted Image

So after a second straight game where my defense and goaltending were good but I was completely ineffective offensively and lost close games, it was time to take a break from the division and head into the All Star week with a game against Tampa Bay. I beat the Lightning earlier in the year at home 5-3, though that was a tough game and of course TB has more than enough weapons to make any game difficult. The Bolts entered the game struggling at 20-21-6, just 3-7 in their last 10 and mired in 13th in the Eastern Conference. My record of 27-18-3 (6-4) was only good enough for 10th after my 2 losses, a position that I have unfortunately become familiar with as I have spend the better part of the first half out of the playoff spots. Still I am just a couple of points being out of the thick of it, but with 4 games left on this trip, including a tough second sweep of California up next, this game looked pivotal to me. Dekanich was in net for this game against former Blue Jacket Garon, who would like nothing more I’m sure than to stick it to his former team. To the St. Pete Times Forum for the only time this season to see if I could get to the break with something to show for this trip.

INJURIES:

COLUMBUS: Wisniewski out
TB: Downie, Purcell out; Malone DTD; Roloson fatigued

GOALIES:

COLUMBUS: Dekanich
TB: Garon

It took only a minute for me to be reminded why this team is tough to beat with the weapons they have. Stamkos hammered in a deflected puck as Dekanich didn’t even move, giving the Bolts an early 1-0 advantage in just 62 seconds:

Despite the early offensive showing, this game would quickly bog down and resemble the last 2 games I have played. Offensively for whatever reason I just can’t do anything. Passes that used to get through aren’t, shots that used to be on target are hitting posts, I don’t know how to fix it. At 8 minutes Umberger was off and the Bolts had a chance to increase their lead with the first PP of the game:

I kept them from scoring, but their offense was in full gear and hit Dekanich with several good shots. Just a couple of minutes later they would get another chance, as Vermette went for interference. Again I held them off, but the Lightning were popping shots and my offense grounded to a complete standstill, even when we got back to even strength. The final PP of the period would come when Pahlsson was whistled for tripping with 4 to go:

Again my PK held, and the rest of the period expired with the lead just 1-0 despite an 18-8 shot advantage for the Bolts and additional advantages in faceoffs and 3 power plays. I would have to radically alter the game’s flow if I was going to change things around in the second.

It looked like I might get a shot at evening things up when Bergeron took the first penalty for the Lightning 2 minutes into the second period:

I was unable to score, but at least I got some shots to Garon and began to make the backline work some. Thus the rest of the first half of the period was a stalemate, but I was dictating play more and had more control of the puck. At the halfway point a ridiculous series of penalties resulted in a number of abbreviated and crazy power play situations, and we even had some 3-on-3, which almost never happens:

Right as all of that was ending, Savard took one more for good measure, ensuring I wouldn’t be able to do much of anything but survive in the final 5 minutes of the period:

I killed off the final penalty and got to the intermission, but by this time both offenses were basically nonexistent. Shots were 10-4 Jackets in the second, but most of those were in the first half of the period. At 1-0 it was still anyone’s game heading to the third, but I had been unable to do anything to get the puck past Garon, who at this point was cruising to a shutout.

Posted Image

As both teams knew the third would be the deciding period, the offense picked up on both ends. At the 5 minute mark I was starting to build something but then Pahlsson got called for hooking and I was back down a man again:

Posted Image

This time I would have no chance to kill off the penalty, as Brewer one-timed the faceoff past Dekanich in just 2 seconds to double the lead to a seemingly insurmountable 2-0 with 15 to play:

Posted Image

10 seconds later Johansen was off for hooking, I was back down a man, and the game seemed lost for certain:

Posted Image

Instead of giving up though, I put in a spirited effort on the kill and some timely clearances fought off the Lightning for the 7th time in 8 tries. At the 8 minute mark Lecavalier was called for hooking and I had one more chance to make a late run at getting back in the game:

Posted Image

This time I was more fortunate, as Nash entered the zone about 40 seconds in and hammered one of his patented howitzers from distance, and like so many times this season it whistled past the netminder and in to cut the lead in half and get me back in it at 2-1 with 11 to go:

Posted Image

For the second half of the period I tried desperately for the equalizer and the Bolts played keep-away, chipping, charging, changing lines, icing when necessary. I did everything I could think of, but was able to get no closer. As the final horn sounded, the Bolts were back to .500 and I had my third straight frustrating loss. Former Jacket Garon had indeed stuck it to his former team:

Posted Image

Shots were 12-9 Lightning in the third, 34-27 overall. Faceoffs ended up fairly even at 19-15 Bolts, and I was ¼ on the PP while holding them to 1/8. Many of those were all abbreviated in the middle of the second.

Posted Image

This was just the latest in a series of overly frustrating games on this trip. Unlike the other 2 games, this was a bad loss and really puts my playoff position in limbo at the All Star break. 49 games in I am now just a few points away from the top 8 but I am also just a few away from 14th. I need to find a way to break through on this trip somehow, as I need points in the final 3 contests in California or else this trip could really sink my playoff chances. The next game is in San Jose, a team that has stolen a game from me late but dominated me in long stretches as well. If I can’t do anything in that one, who can say how far I will freefall. The next game coming out of the break might now be the most critical of the season as I will need to get the second half going on a good note or there may be too many teams to jump no matter how well I play over the final 20 games or so. Until the other side of the break, goodnight from the St. Pete Times Forum, where the final score was Tampa Bay 2, Columbus 1.

Oh my, that's rough. How many time until Wisnie comes back to the lineup? You really need him.
Are you going to play the All-Star Game and post it here?

Amazing reports man, keep up. :victory:

Thanks for reading! Unfortunately, I think I messed up the schedule a tad...when I created the 2011-12 version, I forgot to add in the All Star game, so I can't really play it, or even see who would have made the team. Apologies in advance to anyone else that this affects :o To me it isn't a big deal, it's an exhibition so it doesn't really need to be there, but it would have been fun to play.

As to your second question, Wisnie is out for another 2 weeks or so, I caught a break with the All Star gap that took a week off, so hopefully he will be back for the final 15-20 game stretch run now. Savard has played decently in his place defensively, but on offense I really, really miss him, especially on the power play.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Yeah the Bolts bit me, tough team to figure out, I would have thought their strength was offense but I won the goalfest we had the first game and they beat me in the defensive game the second time around. I like the team, St. Louis is one of my favs. Best of luck in your season!

OK, one more and I am now officially caught up with my games played...

Game 50: Columbus at San Jose

Posted Image

So after dropping 3 in a row before the break I officially lost all of the positions I had gained from the stretch at the end of the first California trip to the end on my homestand where I went 5-1. Coming out of the break I was in 10th spot at 27-19-3 (6-4), but another couple of losses and I would really be up against it with 30 to play. Opposing me in this first game back were the San Jose Sharks, winners of 2 games against me recently and at 26-12-9 (5-5), they sit comfortably in 4th in the conference with games in hand. Though I have had zero luck against the Sharks yet this season, I considered this game crucial, as entering LA and Anaheim on a 4 game skid could really end my season right here. Given how my offense has been playing, I didn’t expect to score many goals at all in this game, so Dekanich was going to have to be nearly perfect and I was going to have to play one of my best defensive games of the year just to stay close. Despite the monumental challenge of it, this is as close to a must-win as I have had all year. To the HP Pavilion then for the last time this season to see if I could manage to halt the skid or if I fell further into the abyss.

INJURIES:

COLUMBUS: Wisniewski out
SJ: Murray, Pavelski, Demers, Vandermeer, Couture out

GOALIES:

COLUMBUS: Dekanich
SJ: Niemi

The opening moments of this game were very familiar, as the Sharks didn’t get an abominable number of shots, but they controlled the game completely from the outset. Dekanich was sharp early and I managed to keep fresh guys out there, but all that did was manage to delay what appeared to be the inevitable. At 8 minutes Clitsome took a vicious roughing minor, and I was down a man for the first time:

Posted Image

After some good penalty killing by me, the Sharks got the puck deep and this time Marleau got it, which was all they needed. He did some nifty skate work and then fed Handzus deep on the post, and he chipped it past Dekanich artfully to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead at the halfway point:

Posted Image

Over the second half of the period I at least stopped the bleeding and held my own defensively, but as with the last 2 games against this team the period ended with the scoring low (1-0) but the play dominated by the Sharks. Shots were 14-6 and I didn’t fare much better on faceoffs, and I also gave up a PP goal on their only chance. I started feeling desperation, but I was determined to shift things around in the second period, as I felt my season might depend on it.

Posted Image

The second period was about as boring as one can get in terms of describing it. All offense basically ceased as neither team could get a puck to the net to save their lives. The first half of the period saw virtually nothing happen. At 11 minutes White was called for interference so I had my first power play:

Posted Image

I got a shot or two off, but nothing real exciting and nothing that Niemi couldn’t turn away easily. A few minutes later Burns was off for hooking and I had one more shot to tie the game:

Posted Image

However again I came up empty despite getting a couple of better looks at it. As the second period ended I had walled them in defensively, as shots were just 7-4 Sharks in a period that neither team was able to get anything going. For me this was partially good news, as I really hadn’t been tested much defensively and I was in good shape down just 1-0, but offensively I had only 10 shots for the whole game in 2 periods and there was nothing to indicate that I was going to be able to penetrate the fortress that the Sharks had built in the third.

Posted Image

Sometimes, in these types of games, nothing good happens and you end up losing by a 1-0, 2-1, or 3-2 score like I had been the past 4 games. Other times, unlikely heroes emerge to alter the course of the game. Such was the case here. In the first couple of minutes, I was getting knocked around, but I was moving the puck deep and finally getting some penetration into the Shark zone. I started leaning heavily on working the back boards and working the puck behind the net. At 4 minutes, Prospal worked behind the net, and he fired a pass in front to Savard, who banged in his first goal of the season (he is Wisniewski’s replacement) to tie the game up at 1 with plenty of time left to go in the game:

Posted Image

At the point the game had turned into a stalemate, so both teams worked to get the deciding advantage. The Sharks pushed first, and Dekanich came up with a couple of brilliant saves. As I pushed to the other end, I kept the deep back board strategy going, and MacKenzie from the checking line managed to slide a pass in front that found Clitsome, a defender who has almost no offensive presence whatsoever. Despite this, he somehow beat a screen of 3 defenders for the go-ahead one-time goal to give me a dramatic 2-1 lead with 13 to play:

Posted Image

At this point the Sharks were rattled and panicked a bit, as they saw a game they controlled turn into a game where they needed an equalizer. I started playing all-out defense at this point, and as a result the Sharks got some looks but they were low-percentage. At 16 minutes a frustrated Burns took his second penalty of the game, and I had a power play with a chance to put it away with just 4 to go:

Posted Image

Alas the killers actually outshot me on this occasion, and with 2 minutes to go we were back to full strength and I was lucky that the game wasn’t tied. I killed off the 19th minute, but with 53 seconds to play Pahlsson was whistled for tripping and the Sharks pulled the goalie for a minute of 6-on-4:

Posted Image

Actually, though, I think being down a man works to the advantage in a pulled goalie situation, because you can ice the puck at will and then the other team has to go chase it. By doing that a handful of times I ran out the clock, and at the end of the game Dekanich celebrated one of his best performances of the year and I got the biggest win of the season so far:

Posted Image

Shots were 14-11 Sharks in the third, 35-21 for the game, but I got the 2 in the third when it counted. Faceoffs were 18-12 Sharks and they scored on their only PP while I was 0/3. All of those look like they should add up to a loss, but this was really a miracle win.

Posted Image

I do think this is the biggest win of the season for me, and now if I can carry this through and get 2-3 more points at the end of this trip I should still be in decent shape. I have killed LA so far this year, so if I can get them again I will have another shot at Anaheim, who leads the conference but who I also shut out the last time we played. If my offense picks back up at least a little, I should be in good shape for a stretch run. Hats off to Savard and Clitsome this game, 2 guys who never score goals but who got huge ones here when the team needed them the most. Off to the Staples Center to play LA next, a team I have outscored 15-3 in the last 2 meetings. Until then, goodnight from the HP Pavilion, where the final score in improbable fashion was Columbus 2, San Jose 1.

Game 51: Columbus at Los Angeles

Posted Image

After coming up with the near-miracle comeback win in San Jose, the trip doesn’t get any easier as I head to Los Angeles for this 5th game of 6 on the trip. The Kings are back healthy again and will be looking for a measure of revenge as I throttled them 8-1 and 7-2 in the first 2 meetings. Quick in particular will be looking for redemption after being yanked in the first game and giving up all 7 in the second for the Kings, who sit at 27-19-4 (6-4) and currently are tied for 9th and just outside of the playoff spots. My win gave me a 28-19-3 (6-4) record that actually vaulted me past 3 teams and into 8th place, one point ahead of the Kings entering the game. Dekanich was tired after just one start after the break, so Sanford filled in between the pipes for this one. To the Staples Center to see if I could continue to turn this trip around or if the win in San Jose was truly a fluke.

INJURIES:

COLUMBUS: Wisniewski out; Dekanich fatigued
LA: Martinez out; Parse DTD

GOALIES:

COLUMBUS: Sanford
LA: Quick

Ordinarily I like to show the penalties and explain the flow of the game, in addition to showing the goals, because I think special teams really determines the rhythm of play in a lot of cases. If you look down at the box score, you will see why I am not doing that in this game. This was, without a doubt, the most ridiculously officiated game in all my years of playing video hockey in any game, and especially in the 3 years of playing this game. There was absolutely no rhythm to this game, as LA got their share of calls and I got whistled every time I got close enough to sniff a fart of a King. I was down a man so often in this first 2 periods that I ended up thinking 4 was the number I was supposed to have. We even ended up with more than one stretch of 3-on-3, which almost never happens. Anyway 8 minutes in the wear on my PK lines started to become apparent, as Johnson found Gagne down low with a nice cross-ice feed to open the scoring at 1-0:

After another penalty Penner would double the score 3 minutes later when he chipped in his own rebound from the left wing of the goal to make it 2-0:

Posted Image

The period ended with a flurry of additional penalties, and at the conclusion of one period it was 2-0 Kings in a game that I basically had no chance to even try to win. Shots were 16-11 Kings (though where I got 11 shots I’m not sure), faceoffs were 13-1 and they had 5 power plays in the period. It was a disaster from start to finish…a trend that would continue into the second.

The refs were apparently being paid by the whistle, because within 3 minutes the penalties started flying again and neither team could get much of anything going. My defense was much better in the period in general, and offensively I got a few good chances, but Quick was out to set his record straight after the first 2 debacles and I was usually one and done as he wasn’t giving up many rebounds. The period seemed to take forever, but not much happened. Then, with a minute left in the period, the Kings were whistled for one final penalty that pushed it back to 4-on-4. This had been happening all game, but this time Vermette took the puck and fed Johansen on the wing, and he rifled a perfect top-shelf shot stick-side that beat Quick to make it 2-1:

The tally at least perked me up a little for the third, as now any crazy bounce, any gorked puck off the post, any weird goaltender play could tie the game up for me, as I was down just one goal. I outshot the Kings 12-5 in the second as I really played well defensively despite the craziness of different players and special teams cycling on and off of the ice every 60 seconds or so. I was still getting murdered in faceoffs and had given up 11 power plays in just 2 periods, but the fact that I was still in the game gave me a funny feeling heading into the third.

Posted Image

The refs more or less put their whistles away in the third period, making things all the more ridiculous. Now all of a sudden guys were getting away with murder and we had to adjust to an entirely different game on the fly. At the halfway point the Kings too one more call but I was unable to score on the PP despite getting half a dozen good looks. It appeared that Quick was ready to break through for a big win, but it was also apparent that all of the craziness had left the Kings with some tired lines, and I was now able to control the puck deep along the boards with more conviction and regularity. With 6 to play I switched lines, with Nash behind the net controlling the puck while line 3 hit the ice. I kept the puck long enough to find Vermette in the corner, and he did some fine puck work and slid a pass back to Nash, who had camped in front instead of heading to the bench. The captain rifled a one-timer perfectly past Quick to tie the game up at 2 with just 6 minutes to go:

Last time out a close game got blown open as Quick became a sieve in the third, and there was always the chance that it would happen again late this time. I worked the puck hard along the boards, and the worst fears of the Kings were realized just a minute and a half later when Pahlsson found Umberger in a similar spot to the last goal, for a similar shot to make it 3-2 Jackets:

Posted Image

Even Hughson commented that this game had turned around 180 degrees. With less than 2 to go I put the exclamation point on the comeback/collapse when Carter found Prospal in front for a lightning-quick one-time wrister to make the final tally 4-2:

Posted Image

The Kings had snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, as Sanford celebrated when the horn sounded as I did, roaring in my chair at the comeback win and how big it was for me:

Posted Image

Shots were 16-9 Jackets in the third, 39-30 for the game. I was 0/7 on power plays and the Kings were 2/11, and I don’t think I have ever been murdered in faceoffs quite like the 35-9 thrashing I took here (at least not by anyone other than Detroit). However much like the Nashville game at the end of my last homestand, it only took a 4 minute stretch for this game to be decided.

Posted Image

This was a huge, huge come-from-behind win, as it gives me 2 in a row out of the break and fully turns around this trip, which started off 0-3. It also plants me firmly in the playoff spots such that even a loss in the finale to Anaheim wouldn’t drop me too far. The Kings better hope they don’t see me in the playoffs because after this one I officially own them mentally. Sanford once again bounced back from a slow start to have a tremendous game, and he has earned more playing time. The defense continues to play well, even in Wisniewski’s absence, and now I was able to muster enough of an offensive stretch to finally break through at the end. This trip concludes next time out in Anaheim, which will be after my next segment report, which will be coming shortly. With 31 games to go I am all of a sudden in a much better position for the playoffs, and now I enter a stretch where 7 of 9 are at home after finishing up this trip. Until then, goodnight from the City of Angels, where the final score was Columbus 4, Los Angeles 2.

So it is now time for the fifth segment report as I have hit the second half of the season. In this segment, I played pretty well, going 6-4-0 for 12 points, and I am 29-19-3 overall (14-8-2 H, 15-11-1 A) for 61 points and currently in a tie for 7th in the playoff picture in a very crowded Western Conference.

Standings are:

Results were:

CLB 3, @CHI 2
PHX 1, @CLB 2
SJ 3, @CLB 2
EDM 5, @CLB 7
NSH 1, @CLB 4
CLB 1, @DET 2
CLB 1, @NSH 3
CLB 1, @TB 2
CLB 2, @SJ 1
CLB 4, @LA 2

Goals were 27 GF, 22 GA in the segment and are now at 157 GF, 135 GA total for the 51 games. My power play sits at 66/283, good for 23.3%, which is solidly 1st in the league. On the PK I have stayed about the same, sitting at 169/201, 84.1% and in 29th. For team leaders, Nash is still among the league leaders in total points. Nash now leads in goals with 36 after another great segment, followed by Carter and Prospal with 21 each. Carter leads in Assists with 26, followed by Nash and Prospal with 22 each. For points then, Nash has 58 (36/26) and Carter (21/26) and Prospal (21/22) follow with 47 and 43, respectively, as Prospal had a strong segment and Carter was pretty quiet. Nash is now a +20, followed by Tyutin at +17 and Prospal at +16. The goaltenders are in a bit of flux but Mason was off this segment. He still sits at 15-14 with a GAA of 2.948 and a S% of .906. Dekanich is playing well with a 10-6 record in the primary role now, with a GAA of 2.023 and a S% of .932, both up from last segment. Sanford has filled in nicely and now sits at 4-2 with a GAA of 2.857 and a S% of .905.

For league leaders, here are some shots, notice how often Nash shows up:

After completing the road trip in game 1, the next segment will feature 7 of 9 at home, which will be a welcome change. The segment features 2 division games and 2 games each against Anaheim and Minnesota, and one of my favorite trips of the year to Broadway to play the Rangers. The schedule is:

@ANA
MIN
DAL
@MIN
ANA
STL
CHI
@NYR
SJ
COL

Hope you have enjoyed the season so far, and stay tuned!

Actually the seasons when you seriously have to fight for the playoff spot are the most enjoyable.

I still suck, so usually my seasons are like that. :D

I remember one NYR season (back in 2007 or something) when I missed the playoffs by ONE point... it was very frustrating. Back in Flyermania I reported a 2008-2009 season with Nashville where I just grabbed the 8th place in my conference... and did well on the playoffs too (I think I went to the conference finals).

Reporting the seasons this way is great... it's nice to come back to these after the years... too bad I didn't have time to copy my Preds season from the FM here... I still have the html-boxscores stored though.

Yeah this one is going down to the wire...I was wondering if you were following my season

Offensively I am relying heavily on one line, and I don't have an established #1 goaltender...but other than that...

I am hoping the next 10 will give me a solid run at a decent position...I won my first playoff series last year, I want to at least match that...we'll see :D

Game 52: Columbus at Anaheim

Posted Image

The next segment begins with the conclusion of the 6-game road trip and the first of 2 games with the Anaheim Ducks over the next 5 on the docket. The Ducks enter as the class of the Western Conference, sitting pretty at 33-11-6 and on a tear at 9-1 in their last 10. At 29-19-3 (6-4), I sat tied for 7th and have finally climbed back into the playoff picture, where hopefully I will remain for the remainder of the season. Everything is still bunched up, however, so a slide of any size will take a team right out of the top 8, as Chicago, for example, has recently found out after leading the division for the first third of the season. In this one Sanford is back in net after shutting out the Ducks 2-0 the last trip out here, and he is up against Hiller, who basically shuts me out once a season and is more or less the toughest goalie I go up against on a consistent basis. He was a prime reason the Ducks railroaded me out of the playoffs in 4 games in the second round last year. I have 7 of the next 9 games at home, and after winning 2 in a row I would love to finish this trip at 3-3. It will be a tall order, though, as the Ducks enter the game healthy and hungry to push back at me after clipping them last time. To the Honda Center to see how this road trip would end and what kind of game I could give the best team in hockey as it sits.

INJURIES:

COLUMBUS: Wisniewski out; Dekanich fatigued
ANAHEIM: Parros out

GOALIES:

COLUMBUS: Sanford
ANAHEIM: Hiller

I didn’t think I could fall behind like I have the last 2 games and recover against a team with such a good goalie and the two tough front lines they have, so my goal was to jump them early. Though I was able to get some early scoring chances, I was not able to light the lamp and so I didn’t get the lead I desired. At 3 minutes Fowler was off early for hooking and I had a power play:

Posted Image

However with Getzlaf and Perry out there on the kill it was hard to tell who was supposed to be shooing and controlling the puck, as the Ducks had as much of it as I did. So what appeared like it would be a tough night got tougher at about 8 minutes when Clitsome went off for cross-checking, putting me down a man for the first time:

Posted Image

The Ducks wasted absolutely no time in making me pay, as Bobby Ryan hammered a top-shelf shot that deflected off the post and off the back of Sanford, and eventually into the net for an early 1-0 lead in just 12 seconds of man advantage:

Posted Image

At the 12 minute mark Ryan went for hooking and I was back up a man with a chance to bounce back:

Posted Image

However it became readily apparent that power plays were not going to be my magic answer this evening, as the Duck kill units played it to perfection. With 5 to go Getzlaf went for a questionable cross-check and I had one more crack at tying the score in the first:

Posted Image

Again I was turned away, though at least I got a couple of good looks at the net. Hiller was playing well however and it appeared that just as in the other games, goals were going to be hard to come by here. The rest of the period concluded with the Ducks having a 1-0 lead and shots being 9 apiece. I was still struggling with faceoffs for whatever reason and my PK wasn’t very good on that opening opportunity. I needed to significantly improve in the second or else I was destined to fall further behind.

Posted Image

As the second period opened, things got worse, as the Ducks slowly and methodically took over the game, as one might expect the top team in the conference to do. They weren’t so much lining up a barrage of shots as they were controlling the puck and forcing me to clear pucks and change lines with little to no offensive pressure. At 8 minutes they doubled their lead as Jacques beat Sanford and a defender with a precision tactical wrister to make it 2-0 and really set me back:

Posted Image

At 12 minutes Nash went on a frustration roughing call along the boards and it appeared I might be on my way to the showers early in this one:

Posted Image

However Selanne went almost immediately for hooking and negated the advantage the Ducks had:

Posted Image

The rest of the period was much the same, as there was basically no indication that I was going to be able to make a dent in the Duck defense. I was scrambling well on defense and Sanford was playing better as the game wore on as he always has done, but when the second period ended and I was down 2-0 it felt like a giant hole to climb out of. Shots were 12-7 Ducks in the second, which was a period they basically owned, and I was no closer in faceoffs or realistic scoring chances than I was after the first. This had all the makings of a laugher in the third if I didn’t do something drastic quickly out of the gate.

Posted Image

As the third opened it got worse, not better. A bit of puck movement by the Ducks resulted in Smith-Pelly controlling in my zone, and though I had the passing lanes and angles covered he simply made a move towards net and beat Sanford with another precision wrister, which stretched the lead to 3-0 and all but put the game out of reach just 2 minutes into the period:

Posted Image

Off the faceoff I had one of my lower lines in, and they at least got the puck deep and worked it a bit. Clitsome hit Dorsett with a pass and it deflected off a defender and right to Aaron Johnson, and in one quick motion he one-timed the deflection top shelf on the backhand side to at least break up the shutout a minute after the Pelly goal:

Posted Image

At this point in the game the Ducks seemingly backed off a bit, perhaps switching to a more conservative strategy with a 2 goal lead and a goalie playing very well despite giving up the fluke goal. This put more of them in the shooting and passing lanes but it also allowed me to control the puck more and work it deep along the boards. At 9 minutes Vermette hit Dorsett from the back boards with a beautiful feed in front, and the big man hammered it home for a rare goal to cut the lead again. All of a sudden I was only down one with still over half a period to play:

Posted Image

At the halfway mark Jacques took a penalty and it looked like I had a golden opportunity to tie it up:

Posted Image

I worked the puck and got 2 fantastic looks at an open net…and posted both of them. Aggressively I tried to keep the puck in the zone, but Johansen got called for holding deep and my power play was over:

Posted Image

I had taken a huge gamble to go for broke on the PP, and I ended up with 2 swollen goalposts and a penalty. Thus it looked like I had blown my chance, but I killed off the penalty and with 6 minutes to go I had one last chance to push at it. Time wore down and it looked like it just wasn’t to be, when suddenly Johansen worked the puck across the middle and then slid a feed to Dorsett, who banged in his second goal off the cross-ice feed to dramatically tie the score at 3 with just over a minute left:

Posted Image

Amazingly, for the third game in a row, I had been dominated for 2 periods, only to make the big comeback at the end. The final minute went by with both teams protecting their point, and we headed to OT with the score tied at 3. Shots were just 10-9 Jackets in the third, but I managed 3 goals and tied the game late.

Posted Image

In OT, I initially tried to get something going, but quickly the Ducks got the puck and basically never gave it back. By the time Dorsett took a penalty 2 minutes in, it was clear that the only thing I could do was play defense and hope for a rare shootout. The Ducks hammered shots at Sanford, and he came up with 2-3 of the more incredible saves I have seen in this game off of rebounds. I was outshot 10-0 in OT, but I did not allow a goal, so after OT we were headed to the shootout.

I think I’ve only had 2 or 3 shootouts this season, which is good because I’m not a fan of them. We cycled through the first 4 guys each before Perry scored for the Ducks, leaving R.J. Umberger as my fifth and final hope to stay in the game. A quick move and a solid shot top shelf were good enough, as he beat Hiller and kept me in it:

Posted Image

We cycled through the second 5 and there were no scores, and finally on the 4th try in round 3 Antoine Vermette netted the winner, finishing the improbable comeback and netting me 2 immensely valuable points on the road:

Posted Image

Shots ended up 40-26 and faceoffs were 28-17, both in favor of Anaheim. This was the second big come-from-behind-by-multiple-goals win in a row, and this time I did it against the best team in the conference on the road to push me to 3-0 after the break, all on the road in California. There is really no way to overstate how important this was, as now I head home for an extended stay to play some teams where I should be able to get some results. If I can put together a good stretch here then by the time this segment is over I should be in solid position for the postseason. Once I got down 3-0 in this one I was sure I was dead, but it just goes to show that once you get that first one, sometimes good things happen in bunches. The loss doesn’t hurt the Ducks that much as they are still solidly in first and came away with a hard-earned point. It really does help me out a lot though as I head home to start off my extended home slate with a Minnesota team that is really the only team in the entire conference currently out of the playoff race. I will do so with supreme confidence after this result, and hopefully it will springboard me to be able to match or even exceed last year’s 4/5 matchup I attained last season. Until next time, goodnight from the Honda Center, where the final score was Columbus 4, Anaheim 3 in a Shootout.
