Game 53: Minnesota at Columbus![]() So after moving to 3-0 after the All Star break with the dramatic win in Anaheim, it was back home to start a stretch of games that are heavily at home and heavily favor me to get some results. The first game tonight was against Minnesota, the only team really out of the Western Conference playoff race. The Wild entered the game at 18-25-9 (3-7) and dead last in the conference by a wide margin. Entering the game I had built my record to 30-19-3 (6-4), which was now good for 7th. Dekanich was back in between the pipes for this one, fresh off of some rest, to face Backstrom, who is usually a tough out but can concede some goals. I made one roster move, sending down Huselius, who has basically contributed nothing, and calling back Atkinson to play wing, who is younger and a bit tougher and might make some more things happen on the checking line. Wisniewski is slated to return this week, so that will also help in the later games of this homestand, though Savard has played well so I will have to make some decisions regarding my defensemen as well. So it is back to the Nationwide Arena to see if I could back up the second half of my road trip by starting off the homestand with a convincing win against what has been probably the worst team in the league. INJURIES: MINNESOTA: Lundin out COLUMBUS: Wisniewski out GOALIES: MINNESOTA: Backstrom COLUMBUS: Dekanich It is often good to get off to a fast start at home and get the crowd in it early, which is what Nash did this game. After retrieving the puck after the opening faceoff he streaked down the right boards and hammered a shot that beat Backstrom clean and gave me a 1-0 lead in just 43 seconds: ![]() Undaunted, the visiting Wild battled back, and after a flurry of shots right after the goal, I was unable to get much going. As we headed to the halfway mark, the Wild appeared to have weathered the storm, and this was reinforced at 9 minutes when Heatley did some nice board work and fired a cross-ice pass perfectly to Clutterbuck, who chipped it in at point blank range to tie the score at 1: ![]() The Wild would continue to get the best of the play, and Nash even took a bad hooking minor at 14 minutes, which gave the Wild a good chance to take the lead: ![]() However I was able to hold them off, and for the last 5 minutes I basically just played it like I needed to get to the second with the score tied. I was successful in that endeavor, but as the horn sounded and I was tied at 1 and down 10-7 in shots and 5-4 on faceoffs, it was readily apparent that I was going to need to ratchet up the heat significantly or else the Wild were going to start believing they were going to win this game. ![]() As a result I came out blazing in the second and I completely flipped the script, as I thoroughly dominated the period and really took it to them from the opening drop. A little over 2 minutes in I took the lead when Pahlsson (right) scored one of the weirder goals I have ever seen. I went deep on the wing and flipped the puck to Brassard (left) in front, and he appeared to chip it in one-time. Upon closer review, however, it looks like the puck went off a defenseman’s skate and directly in the net without Brassard touching it, so Pahlsson was credited with an unassisted goal: ![]() For the next 6 minutes I didn’t score but I hammered pucks at Backstrom, and it became apparent that if I was going to seize this game I was going to do it this period. At 8:30 Cullen took a hooking penalty, giving me my first power play of the game: ![]() At exactly the halfway point of the game, I was undergoing a line change on the power play. Umberger took the puck very deep and then rifled a pass back towards the blue line by the bench, which Nash collected at the line and then buried from distance for his second of the game and a 3-1 lead for me on the power play: ![]() I wasn’t even close to done, as it was time to go for the jugular. Off of the ensuing faceoff, Vermette flipped to Johnson, who hit Dorsett with a pass on the wing, where he entered the zone, fed it back to Vermette, and watched as the center slapped it in to extend my lead to 4-1 just 17 seconds after the last goal: ![]() I kept the pressure on and at this point Minnesota was really struggling, as one might expect a last place team to do. Just a minute after the goal Zidlicky took a hooking minor and I had a good chance to put it away completely: ![]() However this time Backstrom made a couple of nice saves and the defensemen cleared the puck a couple of times to try and save face by fighting off my power play. Undaunted, I kept at it, and Nash collected a puck from Johsnon at the 15 minute mark which he precisely struck with a wrister past Backstrom to give him his hat trick and to give me a commanding 5-1 lead as the hats rained down: ![]() ![]() I added one more exclamation point with 2 to go in the period, when Methot found Brassard in front, and his time he got credit for the puck going in after a scrum in front to extend my lead to 6-1 at the second intermission: ![]() At the horn the game had gone from a tie to a formality in just 20 minutes, as I barraged the Wild with 5 goals and an 18-3 shot advantage in the period. Playing as well as I was, there was virtually no chance that the Wild could make that kind of comeback, so my goal was to not get anyone hurt and to play it out as best I could, knowing I basically had the win in the bag. ![]() In the third the Wild came out early and put some pressure on, but I was determined to take some time off the clock and play defense to ensure the victory. For the first 8 minutes I did little offensively but I was in pretty good control of my own zone and I was keeping fresh guys out there. At 8 minutes Carter took a penalty and the Wild had a sliver of hope of getting back in it if they could get something started: ![]() However I shut that down quickly with some deft work on the kill, and at the halfway point it became evident that this game was over. For good measure I added one more to the tally at 15 minutes, as Brassard found Pahlsson at the point and he sent a screamer high and past Backstrom for a 7-1 lead that sent the goaltender to the showers early: ![]() With 5 minutes to go and Harding now in, I figured I could cruise out the last 5 minutes, which was made even easier when Brodziak took a penalty with just over 3 to go: ![]() Unfortunately at this point of the game, the Wild went for broke and I became suddenly sloppy, all at the same time. 25 seconds into the power play I got the puck off of a save and distributed it left to a waiting defenseman. Unfortunately he cut the other way and the puck went right to Clutterbuck, who quickly rifled it past Dekanich before he could get back into position, giving the Wild a shorthanded goal and cutting the lead to 7-2 with 3 to play: ![]() I got a couple of shots on the ensuing power play time, but I really did nothing as I was basically just waiting for the game to play out. This cost me again with just over 30 seconds to play as Brodziak found Heatley with a cross-ice pass that was eerily similar to the one in the first period that netted the Wild a goal, and this time Heatley was on the receiving end and chipped it in to make it 7-3: ![]() So I had gotten sloppy and conceded two completely unnecessary goals, but in the end Dekanich and company celebrated what was still an easy win: ![]() Shots were 9-8 Minnesota in the third, but 33-22 Jackets for the game. The Wild won faceoffs 19-15 but were 0/2 on the PP, while I was 1/3. ![]() Well the end of this game left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth as I conceded two horrible goals, but all in all I can’t be upset with scoring 7 or cruising to an easy victory. Having played so well in the third period of the last 3 games, this was a bit of a surprise to me, so I really need to get that corrected as I move through and play some tougher teams going forward. Still it was a great offensive effort and Nash had yet another hat trick (I believe that makes 4), which will put him amongst the league leaders in goals. Next time out I welcome the visiting Dallas Stars, who are on the outside looking in on the playoff spots but are making a late run to get back into position in what is still a crowded conference race. Until then, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where the final score was Columbus 7, Minnesota 3. Game 54: Dallas at Columbus![]() After burying Minnesota last time out, I pushed my record to 4-0 after the All Star Break and entertained Dallas next. The Stars entered out of the playoff spots at 25-20-7 (6-4), in 13th but solidly in position to still contend for one of the final spots. I had pushed my record to 31-19-3 (6-4) and was now solidly in 7th in the Conference and threatening to jump several spots if I could keep the winning streak going. After a shaky final period I went with Sanford in net this time, though I was probably going to do that anyway based on the schedule this week. Lehtonen is usually tough for the Stars so I wanted to get off to a good start and then force them to beat me with long shots and collect rebounds, which Sanford tends to give away. Nash is coming off of a hat trick so I was hoping maybe to get some more out of him this game. I beat the Stars in OT last time out, so I expected this one to be much more of a dogfight than the Minnesota game. To the Nationwide Arena to see if I could push the streak to 5. INJURIES: DALLAS: Daley, Peterson, Robidas, Grossman out; Vincour DTD COLUMBUS: Wisniewski out GOALIES: DALLAS: Lehtonen COLUMBUS: Sanford As far as getting off to a good start goes, Nash has been taking care of that, and this game was no different. Coming off of his hat trick he was red hot, and just 20 seconds in off of the opening faceoff he took a pass from Savard and promptly savaged one past Lehtonen to give me an ultra-quick 1-0 advantage: ![]() I expected to be able to take advantage of this quick momentum to push hard for a second, but over the next 10 minutes or so Dallas counter-punched admirably. I got some shots off, but everything I tried to do they had an answer for, and they started to push into the zone with more force themselves. Finally at 12 minutes they had their equalizer, as Morrow fed a perfect cross-ice feed right across the goal mouth to Eriksson, and he chipped it in at point blank range to tie the score at 1: ![]() 2 minutes later Prospal took a hooking minor and the Stars had a golden chance to take the lead: ![]() This time I counter-punched on the PK and was able to clear the puck a handful of times and turn away the Dallas PP. With just under 2 to play Wandell was off for hooking and I had my first man advantage: ![]() I managed a few shots but nothing earth-shattering, and as the horn sounded we were dead even, 1-1 on the scoreboard and 11-11 on shots. Fasceoffs and passing were about the same as well, so we had played to about as much of a stalemate as possible in that first period. The second period would likely tell the story of this game. ![]() And indeed the second period was one of those crazy, whistle-happy periods where all kinds of things happened. It started less than a minute in, when Wandell literally left the penalty box and hooked a man as soon as they went by, sending him right back before the door had even closed: ![]() Less than a minute later Ott was off for holding, and I had a 5-on-3 situation to try and take control of the game: ![]() Ordinarily I am horrible in 5-on-3s, but this was one of the very, very rare times where I was able to pull the double. First, just 7 seconds after Ott’s penalty, Nash found Aaron Johnson at the point for a one-timer to give me a 2-1 lead: ![]() Then, a minute later, Nikitin found Nash with a simple feed, but the captain banged another one past Lehtonen from distance to give me a 3-1 lead just 3 minutes in: ![]() From there the game started getting ugly and the refs started blowing whistles. Over the next minute Clitsome went off first, but then Ott and Ribiero were soon after in a series of questionable calls, giving me what ended up being a 4-on-3 situation: ![]() ![]() ![]() This time, not only did it not help me, but Goligoski and Ott played some nice 1-2 hockey shorthanded, which ended up with an Ott snipe from short range to cut the lead to 3-2 at the 6 minute mark: ![]() The refs were nowhere near finished yet. At 10 minutes, Vermette and Morrow were off quickly, setting up some extended 4-on-4: ![]() ![]() This time I was the benefactor, as Nash was unstoppable from long range tonight. So he took the puck in, got a clean look, and hammered the puck past Lehtonen for his second hat trick in as many games to make it 4-2 as the crowd went wild: ![]() ![]() And there was still plenty more period to go. At 12 minutes, Brassard went for a vicious hit along the bench: ![]() My deft touch on the PK fought off Dallas, however, and they could get no closer. At the end of the PP Ott took a frustration roughing minor, putting me back up a man with 6 to go in the period: ![]() It was a fatal mistake, as Carter did some nice puck work and calmly found Nash, who banged home his 7th goal in the last 2 games to give me a commanding 5-2 advantage: ![]() And the period STILL wasn’t over. At 16 minutes and change Ryder took a hooking minor and it appeared I could deliver the nail in the coffin on the PP: ![]() Not only did that not happen, but the opposite happened…again. Dallas got their second short-handed goal THIS PERIOD when Ribiero beat Sanford clean on a breakaway to make it 5-3: ![]() FINALLY my power play ran out and the horn sounded, ending one of the craziest periods of the year. It ended with me up 5-3 after the game was tied at 1 after one period. Shots were 15 apiece in the period. I scored 3 power play goals, Nash had a natural hat trick, and Dallas countered with 2 shorthanders…ALL IN ONE PERIOD. It was abject craziness at its best. ![]() Not surprisingly, the third period had absolutely, positively none of that. I decided I would play defensive (but smart) hockey, stay out of the box, heck stay without any power plays (Dallas was as likely to score as I was), and force the Stars to get 2 even strength goals to beat me. The result? 20 minutes flew by, and after a completely uneventful period, I had myself a win: ![]() Shots were just 7-4 Jackets in the third, 33-30 for the game. Dallas was 0/5 on their power play, and on my 7 chances, I got 3 goals and Dallas got 2. I ended up winning faceoffs 25-18, which especially helped in the third, because I could control the action, clear the puck, change lines, whatever I needed to do. It wasn’t pretty, but I got the W and pushed my winning streak to 5 after the break. This will continue to move me higher in the crowded standings at just the right time of year to be upwardly mobile. Nash has had 2 games never to be forgotten, with 3 goals last time out and 4 goals this time. Sanford wasn’t pretty but he was effective art even strength, which is always critical. Dallas is a feisty little team and I did well to beat them, with my special teams really coming through in an ugly second period. The third was boring but a thing of beauty as I did exactly what I wanted to do. The next game out is at Minnesota, and then I am back home some more but the level of competition will increase exponentially with games against Anaheim, San Jose, and Detroit on the horizon. Until then, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where the final score was Columbus 5, Dallas 3. Game 55: Columbus at Minnesota![]() After getting spanked 7-3 in Columbus 2 games ago, the Wild were eagerly looking for some payback in this one. On the flip side, I need to beat the bottomfeeder (really the only one) in the Western Conference because my upcoming opponents are very tough. Not much else to say about this rematch, I entered on a 5 game winning streak at 32-19-3 (7-3), tied for 5th in the conference and just 1 point out of a tie for second place. Minnesota was firmly in the basement at 19-26-9 (3-7). Wisniewski is DTD, but since I am on a winning streak I decided to rest him here and keep my back line in tact. Boll is out with the flu and so I called Byers back up for him. Dekanich is back in for the second time, and since this is the first of 2 back-to-back games, Sanford will then get the next game against Anaheim, a team he has already beaten twice. Backstrom was fatigued here, but after giving up 7 to me last time, the Wild could do worse than trying their luck with Harding. So with that it is off to the Xcel Energy Center in the Twin Cities to see what happened. INJURIES: COLUMBUS: Boll out; Wisniewski DTD MINNESOTA: Lundin, Latendresse out; Backstrom fatigued GOALIES: COLUMBUS: Dekanich MINNESOTA: Harding As with many of the games on this win streak, the action started off fast. Unfortunately, in this case it wasn’t in my favor. Just a minute in Savard was whistled for an early hooking minor, and I was down a man immediately: ![]() On the power play Heatley and Clutterbuck moved the puck well, and Cal found what apparently is a hole in Dekanich’s game, as he hit a goal from a very sharp angle on the left wing that should have been a routine save. This put me down 1-0 in just 91 seconds: ![]() So this time it was apparent that the home team meant business, and it was incumbent on me to swing the momentum back as the Wild did in the first period in Columbus. So I set out to do that, and just 5 minutes later I had my early equalizer, as Johansen fed Dorsett with a perfect pass in front that he one-timed to perfection to even it at 1: ![]() The rest of the period was a spirited, back-and-forth affair with both teams getting their share of chances. At 12 minutes Prospal was off for roughing for a big hit along the boards and I was down a man for the second time: ![]() This time my PK regained some of its composure and successfully killed off the penalty. As a result the rest of the period went by quickly and at the intermission, as it was the last game, it was even after a period at 1-1, with shots also close at 11-10 Wild. They had an early jump on faceoffs, but if you look I also had a 100% passing rating, which I don’t think I have ever had and likely never will again. So again the second period would tell the story…would it be as crazy as the last time out? ![]() It certainly appeared that it would be as the second period opened, as the penalties started flying after less than 60 seconds. Koivu was off first for hooking, followed closely by Nikitin for roughing, and we were back to 4-on-4 in less than 90 seconds: ![]() ![]() Nothing came of that mini burst, and then at 5 minutes we had a full on collision of penalties, as each team took 2 each in less than 2 minutes, resulting in some 3-on-3 and all kinds of other crazy combinations: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There was basically no rhythm to the game at this point, as the special teams were on and off the ice so rapidly that there wasn’t much offense to speak of. The good news is that when this was over, the refs basically put their whistles away and let the players decide it. At 11 minutes, I finally had a breakthrough, as Umberger did some hard work along the right boards and slid a perfect cross-ice feed to Methot, who had poached deep to the post. He ended up with a point blank back-door shot he couldn’t miss, and I had a 2-1 lead: ![]() Atkinson took one more penalty for me, but I was able to kill it off successfully. The rest of the period featured 4-6 shots for both teams but nothing really dangerous. At the second intermission I had a very slim 2-1 lead, with shots at 11-8 Columbus in the period. This was still anyone’s game headed to the third, and I had a bit of a bad feeling because the Wild had built some momentum towards the end of the second. I was also getting smoked on faceoffs, which made controlling the puck difficult. ![]() As I feared, the Wild came out with reckless abandon in the third, looking to tie the game up, and I could do nothing to slow them down. For 6 solid minutes they peppered Dekanich with shots, though the goaltender did a great job of fending them off. However Bouchard apparently remembered the earlier goal, so he took the puck to the same spot and fired it. It beat Dekanich again, tying the score at 2 with 14 to play: ![]() At this point I had to make a decision as to whether to push ahead hard for another goal or to play defense and counterattack, protecting my current position in a tie. I decided that since I was playing the worst team in the league with their backup goaltender, I would try and score first and then counterattack. As it turns out, that worked out well, because less than a minute later the checking line combined for a goal, as Byers did some great work behind the net and fed Atkinson on the wing for a one-timer that became his first NHL goal and a 3-2 lead for me with 13 to go: ![]() Now I decided to counterattack while up one, and it worked to perfection. I let the Wild overcommit, shit down the wing where they had gotten their two goals, and pushed the puck ahead when I had the chance. At 14 minutes Johansen stole the puck from a defenseman in front and tapped it past Harding to give me a commanding 4-2 lead with just 6 to play, and it appeared my winning streak was safe: ![]() At this point the Wild threw some desperate shots at Dekanich, but there was no letdown like there was the last time out in the third. By the time Tyutin was credited for a deflected goal with less than a minute to go, the outcome was already apparent: ![]() 30 more seconds later and Dekanich had another routine win, as I improved to 6-0 after the break: ![]() Shots were 15-7 Wild in the third, making it 34-28 for the game. I was 0/3 on my PP but held them to 1/6, as most PPs were abbreviated. They killed me on faceoffs for whatever reason 26-7, but I made it count in the third with some clutch goals, which I have done in most games during this streak. ![]() So the winning streak is now at 6, and the next game out against Anaheim in Columbus is something I never thought I would say: the game between the 2 teams with the most points in the Western Conference, as I found myself in 1st in the division and 2nd overall in the conference after this win. This was a good team effort where I battled hard for 2 periods before I was able to take control in the third. The Ducks and I have developed a nice rivalry over the last 2 years, so this next game will likely be a classic as I have beaten them the last 2 times in Anaheim. I have vaulted all the way up to second in the conference, which doesn’t mean too much as I am only 11 points ahead of team #14, but it is nice not to have a dozen teams to pass. I am basically just enjoying this winning streak and will hope to keep it going as the teams I play get a lot tougher. Until then, goodnight from the Xcel Energy Center, where the final score was Columbus 5, Minnesota 2. Game 56: Anaheim at Columbus![]() So here it is, the showdown in the Western Conference. Anaheim has been the best team in the conference over the past 2 months, and at 35-12-7 (7-3), they still are. However, I have been the hottest team since the break, and my 6 game winning streak has pushed me to 33-19-3 (7-3), second in the conference. Add in that I have beaten the Ducks the last 2 games we have played, both times in Anaheim, and this game shaped up to be a war. I made no line changes, with Wis still limited I went with who I had and I went with Sanford, who has won the last 2 games against the Ducks. Anaheim entered the game pretty healthy and sent Hiller back out in hopes of getting that breakthrough win against me. If I could make it 3 in a row against the Ducks, the top team in the conference and the team that swept me out of the playoffs last year, that would really make a statement. If the Ducks could counter and win in Columbus, that would make a statement as well. So off to the Nationwide Arena to see how it all went down. INJURIES: ANAHEIM: Koivu, Parros out COLUMBUS: Boll out; Wisniewski DTD GOALIES: ANAHEIM: Hiller COLUMBUS: Sanford I have tried to get something top happen early, and in almost every game of this streak there has been a goal in the first 2 minutes. This game was no different. Nash got the puck after the faceoff and a quick pass from Savard, entered the zone, and proceeded to immediately fire a rising missile past Hiller for the quick 1-0 lead in just 34 seconds: ![]() I kept the pressure up briefly, but any thoughts that this would propel me to an easy win were quickly dispelled by a Duck team that obviously knows how to win. At the 5 minute mark they quickly evened it up when Ryan found Getzlaf with an angled pass for a on-timed backhander past Sanford to make it 1-1: ![]() So after 5 minutes we had both fired an opening salvo and now it was time to dig in. For the next 10 minutes there was intense action back and forth, with both teams trading barbs and shots and both goaltenders coming up with good saves. At 14 minutes Pahlsson went for tripping, something he has been doing a lot of, and I was down a man for the first time in the game: ![]() However I held the powerful Duck attack at bay with a couple of nice clearances, so good red line pressure, and a couple of good saves by Sanford. The rest of the period went by quickly and at the end of one, it was all that was advertised, as the game was tied up at 1. I led in shots 13-8 and in faceoffs 6-2, but the Ducks had gotten the better of the hitting and puck control. This one appeared to be going down to the wire, so the second period would be very interesting. ![]() As it turned out, the second was much the same as the first had been. Both teams traded zone pressure, decent scoring looks, and crushing hits along the boards as neither team willingly gave an inch. Time-wise the period rolled along until 13 minutes, when I suddenly found myself in all kinds of trouble. Brassard went for hooking, followed less than a minute later by Dorsett for hooking trying to kill the penalty, and with 6 to play in the period I was down 5-on-3: ![]() ![]() Surprisingly, I was able to kill both penalties off. Nash did a fantastic job of being a pest as the Ducks were trying to set up their offense and Sanford made some very nice saves. As the period progressed we got back to even strength and I really had a lift from killing off the 2 penalties. Unfortunately a really bad bounce would alter the course of the game. With a little under 2 to play, Perry got the puck in a giant scrum in front. He hit a shot that looked to be heading to the net in a hurry, causing Sanford to react. Sadly, the puck deflected off of a defenseman, which led it to flutter awkwardly past a helpless Sanford to give the Ducks a 2-1 lead at the break: Shots were 10-7 Jackets in the period, but I was very dejected at being down because of that horribly bad luck. I was outshooting them and clobbering them in faceoffs, but the Ducks had the look of a team destined to find a way to win this game. I decided to go all-out in the third, figuring if I sat back and waited for chances, I might not get any until it was too late. This of course would open me up to counter-attacks, but it would sure make for as fun finish. ![]() To start the third, I went all out for the tie, and the Ducks did the same for the commanding goal. Shots went flying back and forth as teams streaked up and down the ice to try and make something happen. All was well for me until Pahlsson took yet another tripping call at 9 minutes, giving the Ducks one more man advantage to take the commanding lead: ![]() As one might expect, this is the kind of opportunity that a first place team takes advantage of. Visnovsky took the puck, circled the net, and fired a wrap-around, which Sanford saved, but Perry was camped in front and fired a lightning-fast wrister past Sanford off the rebound to give the Ducks their 3-1 advantage with under 11 to go: ![]() At this point I was deflated, but I was bound determined not to give up my winning streak or my home ice without a fight. I put my top line out there and pushed into the zone off the faceoff, and Savard, who was still in where Wisniewski would have been, got in front of the net to be a pest and drew one of the most obvious tripping penalties on Sbisa you will ever see, giving me a man advantage to try and get back in it somehow: ![]() This was also the kind of opportunity a good team needs to take advantage of, and this time it was on me. After some good puck work and a couple of good clearances by Anaheim, I drew it back in with my top line with one more shot before the PP ended. This time, Nash hit the deep wing and played decoy, perfectly drawing defenders before sliding a pass to Carter that he hammered past Hiller to cut the lead to 3-2 with about 8 to play: ![]() Now it was on…I had 8 minutes to tie it, and the Ducks had 8 minutes to kill off. I desperately tried to get the puck deep, but I kept being met and run over at the blue line, only to see the puck cleared back down the ice. I tried every line I had and everything I had, but repeatedly the Ducks just seemed to come up with the goods. As the clock ticked down less than a minute, the Ducks started playing keep-away and then fired a couple of shots at Sanford, which he managed to save. Methot collected the puck and outleted it to Brassard right as he was getting mowed down. Brassard streaked up the wing and fired a final desperation shot at Hiller, which he turned aside. Unfortunately for him, he turned it right to a cutting Pahlsson, who calmly tapped it into the net with 38 seconds left for the dramatic tying goal: ![]() Just like that, I had stolen the equalizer and we were headed to OT. Shots were 15-10 Ducks, but I had come up with the final 2 goals of the period and we had both earned a well-deserved point for our efforts. Now it was time to see who would get the extra one and if I could manage to extend my streak to 7. ![]() In OT I took complete control early, firing a couple of good shots at Hiller and drawing an interference penalty on Foster at 47 seconds, giving me an OT power play and a chance to end the game: ![]() On the PP I hammered shots at Hiller from the left. I hammered them from the right. I hit one-timers and slapshots from distance. Very few got through the defensive wall, but the ones that did were saved admirably by Hiller, and as Foster left the box the entire complexion of the period changed. Now it was Anaheim that peppered Sanford with shots as their powerful top 2 lines looked to end the game. I had to ice it a couple of times and Sanford came up with a couple of big saves, and as the period was ending it looked like we were heading to a shootout. However I was being pesky in the Ducks zone, and Prospal managed to steal the puck from a defenseman and fire a quick wrister past Hiller seemingly out of nowhere with just 13 seconds left in the period, touching off a wild celebration: ![]() ![]() ![]() Shots were 7-6 Ducks in OT, 39-37 Jackets for the game. After all of that, Anaheim was 1 for 4 on PPs and I scored once in just two chances. I owned faceoffs 28-10, which really helped me keep the game close. ![]() Well they don’t come much more dramatic than that, with the top 2 teams playing and the game-tying and game-winning goals both happening in the final minute of the period. I pushed my winning streak to 7 and my record to an improbable 7-0 after the break. Not much else to say about this game, it was fun, it was exciting, it was everything it should have been, it was a great win, and the Ducks more than deserved the point they got as well. The next game out is against a pesky St. Louis team that has had my number this far this season, so pushing the winning streak to 8 will not be easy. Until then, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where the possible game of the year ended at Columbus 4, Anaheim 3 in OT. Game 57: St. Louis at Columbus![]() So it’s hard to top the last game as I pushed the winning streak to 7 with the dramatic win over Anaheim. This time out I get the pesky St. Louis Blues, who are currently in last in the Division but have beaten me 5-3 (CLB) and 3-2 (STL) the only two times we have played thus far this season. I like what Byers has done on the checking line, so I left him in for Boll, but I did call Wisniewski back and sent down Clitsome, since Savard has been playing so well on defense. Dekanich was back in net for this against Halak, who is really difficult to figure out how to beat. These division battles are always tough and important games, so motivation was not an issue entering this evening’s contest for me. At 34-19-3 (7-3) I now sat 3rd in the Conference in points because of the games in hand that San Jose has, and the Blues entered 10th in the conference at 27-19-9 (4-6) so motivation was no issue for them either. So off to the Nationwide Arena to see whether I could push my winning streak up to 8. INJURIES: ST. LOUIS: McDonald, Sterling, D'Agostini, Perron out COLUMBUS: Sanford fatigued GOALIES: ST. LOUIS: Halak COLUMBUS: Dekanich In the first period the action began very early again. This time I was pushing hard for an opening goal when Prospal got carried away and was called for roughing at center ice, putting me down a man just 75 seconds in: ![]() I was able to kill the penalty, but the Blues hammered shot after shot at Dekanich, and it looked like I might be in for a long night. As we got back to even strength I struggled to get anything going as the Blues controlled most of the game. At 9 minutes Nichol got a roughing minor and I had some hope of turning the momentum around: ![]() Instead, the opposite happened, as I gave up yet another shorthanded goal in what has become arguably my biggest problem of the season. This time, Oshie entered the zone and found Polak, who hit what should have been a routine save. Instead, the puck rose rapidly and beat Dekanich high, giving the Blues a 1-0 lead halfway through the period: ![]() The second half of the period was a lesson in abject frustration as the Blues dominated the run of play and I was able to get nothing going. I fought them off and kept them from extending their lead, but as the horn sounded they had a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard and a 14-7 shot advantage, which is reflective of how badly I got outplayed. I felt fortunate to still be realistically in it, but I knew I was going to need to do something significant in the second period to turn it around some or else I would be out of it by the time the third started. ![]() And the second turned out to be one of those crazy periods where all kinds of stuff happened. First, Sobotka took a weird roughing minor that I didn’t get a shot of, giving me a power play. I was unable to score on it and in fact the Blues got as many shots as I did, leaving me with no sense of being any better off as the penalty ended. Then as soon as were back at 5-on-5 Oshie found Berglund in front, and he deftly slammed it top shelf past Dekanich to give the Blues a commanding 2-0 lead just 4 minutes into the period: ![]() At this point my streak was in serious jeopardy, as I hadn’t shown any indication of being in this game at all. A minute later, however, my checking line got me back in it, as Byers, who is receiving playing time in place of Boll, hit Johnson with a pretty cross-ice feed, and the defenseman chipped it in to cut the margin to 2-1 and put me back in the mix with 5 gone in the 2nd: ![]() This led to a burst of momentum for me, and at 8 minutes Stewart took a questionable roughing minor and I had a chance to tie the score on the power play: ![]() 45 seconds later, on a delayed hooking call on Oshie, Vermette (left) buried a backhander top shelf past Halak and I had not only tied the score at 2, but I had one more full 2 minute power play at my disposal: ![]() Alas the Blues fought me off and salvaged some momentum back, and I was unable to take the lead on the subsequent man advantage. Shortly thereafter Byers and Shattenkirk exchanged penalties, setting up some 4-on-4: ![]() ![]() Nothing came of that situation, and it looked like the period would end uneventfully until Nash took an ill-advised hooking minor with 3 to play: ![]() I played good defense on the PK, and I was headed back to full strength when Stewart put one more shot on net. It deflected hard off Dekanich and straight to his left, where Polak collected it and buried it in the open net for a power play goal and a 3-2 lead: ![]() To make things a bit more interesting, Jackman took a hooking penalty as the period was ending, meaning I would start the third up a man: ![]() So at the end of an eventful second, it was 3-2 Blues. Shots were 12 apiece in a period where both teams had plenty of good chances. I was hammering them on faceoffs, which was giving me enough control of the puck to stay in it heading to the third, where I needed to come up with some more magic to keep the streak alive. ![]() The Blues killed off the penalty to start the third, and then slowly and methodically started killing my chances for a comeback. At 4 minutes MacKenzie went for hooking, and I knew one more goal would be fatal: ![]() I worked really hard on the ensuing PK and managed to turn them away despite giving up 2-3 really good chances, which Dekanich handled brilliantly. Back at even strength I pressed on, and slowly built a bit of momentum in the run of play. At 12 minutes I had a golden chance as Stewart took a hooking minor: ![]() At this point I was drilling pucks at Halak from all angles, and he came up with a couple of saves that defy description and may even defy physics. One stop on a point blank back-door one-timer had me chuckling and pissed off all at the same time. The Blues fought off the power play and began the game of keep away until the end. Did I have one more magic bullet left? As we got under a minute, I wasn’t able to control the puck at all, as the Blues were passing and shooting at will. Finally Carter chased and grabbed the puck and outleted it to Nash right as he got hammered into the boards. Nash found himself one-on-one, so he entered the zone, sneaked in 2 dekes, and hammered a slapshot at net. It beat Halak clean, and I had done it again…the score was tied at 3 with under a minute to play: ![]() The period ended with both teams protecting their point. Shots were 19-10 Jackets in a crazy shooting period that saw Halak make one incredible save after another. Still I had risen from the dead yet again to force OT. ![]() Given the chance to steal another one and keep the streak going, I pushed hard right out of the gate for the winner. Unfortunately I pushed too hard, and at 1:24 Methot got whistled for hooking, sending me to the PK in OT: ![]() The Blues hammered shot after shot at Dekanich, and he gamely turned them away. Since we were in OT, I pushed for a shorthander as well, and nearly pulled one off with Nash a couple of times. The penalty ended and I had successfully killed it off, but alas I would not be able to get the puck back out of my zone. With tired guys on the ice, the Blues pounced, as Polak, the unquestioned star of the game, found Pietrangelo for the winner to halt my streak at 7: ![]() ![]() Shots were 7-4 in OT for the Blues, 43-42 for the game. I was 1/7 on PP chances and the Blues were 1/5. I killed them on faceoffs 34-14, but this time the glass slipper finally didn’t fit at the end. ![]() So the winning streak died here at 7, but my points streak extended to 8 games as I am 7-0-1 after the break. It is impossible to be mad, as I have come back to life so many times the past 8 games I should be a walker on the AMC show The Walking Dead. The streak of 15 points in 8 games really puts me in great position, and we’ll just regroup and head back out the next time and see if we can keep the point streak alive. I still got a dramatic equalizer at the end, so it’s not like I didn’t pull something out of nothing here. I was outplayed most of the game and St. Louis deserved the extra point. The next time out I entertain Chicago, who I have been pretty successful against this year so far. Until then, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where the final score was St. Louis 4, Columbus 3 in OT. [DOHTML] <table border=1> <tr><td> COLUMBUS</td><td align="center">3 </td></tr> <tr><td> ST. Game 58: Chicago at Columbus![]() Well after the winning streak came to an end at the hands of St. Louis, who has now beaten me all 3 times we’ve played thus far, it was back out on home ice against another division opponent tonight. Chicago entered the game at 31-20-7 (4-6) and in 7th in the Western Conference. That is higher than a few games ago when they were 10th but is a far cry from when they occupied the top 2 spots earlier in the season. I entered at 34-19-4 (7-3) and still on a stretch where I have gotten points in 8 straight games to move into 3rd in the Conference behind Pacific stalwarts Anaheim and San Jose. Unlike St. Louis, I have had some good success against the Blasckhawks so far. I dropped the opener 3-1 in Chicago, but since then I have 3 wins: 6-1 (H), 4-1 (A), and 3-2 (A). The Hawks entered this game more healthy than they were the last 3 times I played them, so they should be in good position to put up a scrap. Crawford was fatigued so Emery was in against Dekanich, but like my team I don’t consider goaltending their strength anyway. To me, this game was all about my team…could I bounce back from the disappointment of seeing my losing streak end or would that start a slide that would put me back in the pack quickly? To the Nationwide Arena for the answer…for tonight anyway. INJURIES: CHICAGO: Smith, Scott, Frolik out; Crawford fatigued COLUMBUS: None GOALIES: CHICAGO: Emery COLUMBUS: Dekanich This game wasn’t poorly officiated and there weren’t a ton of penalties, but special teams would turn out to be a critical factor in the outcome. Just 2 minutes in Toews was off for interference, and I had the first power play of the evening: ![]() After some initial frustration I cashed it in a minute later on a line change, as Nash ended up on the receiving end of a nice pass from Vermette to open the scoring at 1-0 at the 3 minute mark: ![]() The next 10 minutes or so were pretty evenly matched, as the Hawks held their own and I kept shots mostly away from Dekanich, who still made a couple of nice saves. At 13 minutes Nikitin was off for hooking, and the Hawks had their first man advantage of the game: ![]() They got about 3-4 good shots off, but Dekanich came up big with a couple of short range stops. As the period was starting to wane, I drew a hooking call on Lepisto, and I had one more shot with a man advantage in the frame: ![]() 40 seconds later the front line cashed it in, as Carter fought off a cross-check and beat Emery top-shelf to give me a 2-0 lead at the break: ![]() Shots were 13-8 in the first period and I had really outplayed the Hawks for almost the entirety of the period for my 2-0 advantage. I gave up a couple of close range shots on the power play and was fortunate that Dekanich turned them away, so I figured I had best tighten up a bit in the ensuing periods if I was going to keep my advantage. ![]() Opening the second I started to shift to a counter-attack-based strategy, as I had a 2 goal lead and Dekanich was playing well. I figured I could limit them to low percentage shots and then push the other way at key times, all the while keeping fresh guys on the ice. If I could do that I thought I would be in good shape. The result was that Chicago controlled the puck but didn’t get it down low much. At 4 minutes Bolland was called for hooking, and I had one more man advantage: ![]() Unlike the first 2 PPs, this one was one of my worst all year that I didn’t give up a goal on. Chicago didn’t get many shots off, but they kept dumping the puck along the boards and I kept chasing it, all the while watching it then get dumped the other way and chasing it again. I was never able to get anything going until the tail end, when I at least got the puck into the zone. This proved to be critical, because though I didn’t score on the PP itself, I did on the following shift at even strength, as Vermette found Prospal in a line transition for his second assist of the night, and the goal pushed my lead to 3-0 at the 7 minute mark: ![]() A minute later Seabrook was sent off for roughing and I had a chance to really take form control of the game on the PP: ![]() And take control I did, as Prospal found Nash for a blistering slapshot from the point, his 2nd of the game and 47th of the year to give me a 4-0 lead with 12 yet to play in period 2: ![]() With a 4 goal lead I didn’t try to stop scoring, but it was time to full on make the Blackhawks beat me. I figured if I could stay out of the box, it would be very difficult for the Hawks to get 4 even strength goals the way Dekanich was playing. In the second half of the period I had to kill only one penalty, as Byers was sent off with 4 to go: ![]() I successfully navigated the PK, however, and as the horn sounded for the second intermission I was on cruise control with a 4-0 lead. Shots were 11-6 Chicago in the period, but I was smoking them in faceoffs, controlling my defensive zone well, and figured I was in good shape as we started the third. ![]() It was a good thing I was in good shape, because the third was one of those periods where you can’t get a shot at net no matter what you do. The refs were letting everything go and the Hawks were all too eager to take advantage. For the first half of the period I generated no offense to speak of, though I repeatedly turned away the Hawks in their attempts to get back in the game and Dekanich kept making good saves. When I started to retaliate against the Hawk tactics, naturally I got whistled, as Wisniewski went off for hooking at the 12 minute mark: ![]() Again the Hawks had faint hopes of getting back in it, but this is one of those situations where being down a man actually helps in a weird way. I wasn’t generating any offense anyway, and you can ice the puck at will on the PK, so I basically sat back and sent the puck repeatedly down the ice, killing the penalty and frustrating the Hawks. At 5 minutes it was clear that the shutout was the only goal left, and the Hawks renewed their efforts to spoil it. Some deft puck handling helped my cause, and in the final minute we exchanged meaningless penalties: ![]() ![]() Finally, the horn sounded, and Dekanich had his second shutout (just my third as a team) of the season, as I had a convincing win and points in 9 straight games: ![]() Shots were 11-2 Chicago in the third, 30-21 for the game. However I was 3/5 on power plays and held them to 0/3 and I won faceoffs 22-8, so I was able to control significant portions of this game. ![]() It certainly was nice to get a convincing win over a division opponent in this one. All facets of the team played well, I wasn’t at my best 5-on-5 but I held my own and scored on the PP when I had chances. The shutout was also nice to get, which is a rarity for this game for me. Not much else to add, I dominated the first 2 periods and basically just played defense in the third, but I was able to more or less stay out of the box, so it worked out well tonight. The next game out is on Broadway to play the Rangers, who are fighting for a playoff spot in the East, so that should be a fun experience as it always is. Until then, goodnight from the Nationwide Arena, where the final score was Columbus 4, Chicago 0.
