Ok, so I took the Blackhawks to the playoffs and lo and behold, I get a first round matchup with the Canucks! Now that's realism. I played the first game, won 2-0, and as it went back to the Dynasty Central page it crashed back to windows. Out of anger I tried simming the game and the same thing happened. Tried again and the same thing happened. No real error message just the "NHL 2004 has stopped working" dialogue box. Using the Google, I have found a lot of info saying I'm screwed and that this is a known issue in Dynasty mode. I wish I would have known. If I have to start Dynasty over again, fine. If someone knows how I can save the damn thing that would be awesome. And has anyone found a work around to this before I get to the playoffs? I'm sure people are able to finish a season in Dynasty mode. Also I found out that the game schedules every playoff game twice. Here is a screenshot from NHL View showing that ![]() Oh and where can I get a copy of the original schedule? I added the 2011-12 schedule and apparently this may cause problems too. |

The Old One

I have the same problem just now with the vanilla version of the game of 8th year already (waiting patiently ofc for newest version of the mod ;> ), just finished a game and bang a crash to the desktop. I remember having this bug happen to me before and I don't think I was able to fix it, if I remember, all I could do was use an old file for the season (set me back at 2nd month of that season) and replay it all, somehow it later didn't happen again until now (though I haven't played the vanilla one for over 2 years I think). I do remember the dates being entered twice and if you look at the playoffs tree, you might see your team made it to the finals already (as is my case) - in NHL view shows me as victor as well, though doesn't show in game and doesn't add to the number of cups I won already etc. I'm afraid there's no workaround for this but I could be wrong, last time I asked people about this (4 years ago was it, not even sure about when it happened) and they knew about the bug but couldn't help me. |

I always back up my savegames after I close the game, that way I'll only lose like one or at worst couple of games of progress if something goes wrong. For some reason it seems a lot can go wrong. At least vanilla has trouble when the season ends, sometimes playoffs work, sometimes not. |

If this ever happens to you, I stumbled on a solution! You need NHLView, as Doyle had above. The problem IS INDEED that the game has scheduled each team twice in the same day. If you go into the Schedule tab and open up Playoff from the Filter dropdown, with All Teams selected from the Team dropdown, you'll see all the playoff games. My original theory didn't work for fixing this problem, but here's one I think WILL work. (I unfortunately only realized this once it was too late, and unless it happens to me again, I don't have the opportunity to test my theory. Here's what I think you have to do. 1. Order the games by their "Game No." You'll notice each game duplicate has an a lower number and a higher number (roughly 50-56 higher). 2. Manually change the date of the higher-numbered game to a date a couple days after your last first round game. Essentially, you have to schedule the rest of the playoffs in a sequential way such that lower-numbered games are played first. In my case there were 49 duplicate games, which is exactly how many you need for the 4 Conference Semifinal Rounds, the 2 Conference Championship rounds, and the Stanley Cup Final. Once all the duplicate entries are gone, go back into the game and it should work! After the first round is over, you might have to go back into NHLView and correct who the participants are for the subsequent rounds, since the schedule already exists. It's definitely painstaking, and I'm not sure how well it will work. In my case, I just changed the duplicate entries to be other (non-playoff) teams, but didn't change the date. Once I got through the first round, it didn't schedule any more games. Weird. Somehow it allowed me to sim ahead to the draft (no Cup awarded) and go through the draft, but when it came time for the next season, there were no games scheduled again. So ultimately, this might allow you to play through the playoffs, but even then I'm not sure it'll let you play a subsequent season. But hey, it's a small improvement and maybe it'll help someone figure out the rest of the issue! |

In my dynasty I'm playing with FLA in a series against PIT. I've tried to make how you said but, according to the calendar, I have my eventual game 7 vs SJS (They missed the PO). Furthermore, some matchups are correct just on one side e.g. NYR's calendar has 7 games vs NYI, on the other hand NYI plays not only NYR but also OTT, WSH among the others. I've checked out for possible overlaps but everything's looks ok. I've noticed that the string order depend on the team name by default (15/04/2015 FLA @ NJD + 15/04/2015 FLA @ PIT). Do you think that that may affect how the calendar reads them? |

It took a while to play through the first playoffs series, and then I realized my fix had flaws. Unlike what I thought, which was that NHL 2004 was trying to schedule a "normal" amount of games (i.e. 15 games to use all 30 teams) with just the playoff teams available, I'm guessing now it was scheduling all the playoff games using just the first round teams. Very weird. I'll update my original post with a new theory. |

Yeah, this is a major bummer. I didn't know this issue existed as my first 4 seasons of dynasty I did not make the playoffs so things just went on as normal. Simmed through the playoffs, draft, etc. Now I make the playoffs finally and it crashes. I, too, opened the NHLView and saw the duplicate scheduling and I'm stumped about what I'm really supposed to do. Really disappointing to play every game, finally make the playoffs and then I can play the first game but it crashes. Can't sim either. Can't advance to selected date either. Crash, crash, crash. So sad. Anybody have a good explanation why? Yes, I check if I have the arena-viv file in the proper place. No, I did not play game one of the playoffs immediately after the regular season ended (I saw someone else post this elsewhere when I did a search.) I WAS so excited for this game. Now, the excitement is gone. |

I simulated the first Dynasty season with Vancouver and have no problems with playoffs.![]() The schedule looks ok. Does this happen in some particular Dynasty year (like the 4th year) or is it completely random occurance? I'd blame the modified real 2014-2015 schedule but if it also happens in the vanilla game then it's quite puzzling. PS: The schedule (inside *.dyn file) can definitely be saved/fixed manually with schedule editor. Sence can probably offer some advice. |

yeah, I think this is year 5 of the dynasty (might be year 4, not sure.) I don't have a schedule editor, I don't believe. I'll search for it, unless you have a link. I'm not sure what schedule I originally used when I downloaded the mod. I know I downloaded and installed everything in early March of this year so everything was "up to date" as of that time. |

Did you set the Dynasty starting year with Launcher? Not that I think it has necessarily anything to do with it... just trying to find a common denominator for the problems. I will try to simulate a few Dynasty years later today and see if I can duplicate this problem. Edit: Simmed to the fourth year of playoffs. No problem at all. However I had to switch the USER TEAM from Commissioner every year as I wanted to control a playoff team. If you just sim it to the end of the season the user team is usually last in the standings. I will try to sim it further. |

I will look for this problem when I have time but before that, please try different schedules. For example I made 98-99 schedule and it is perfectly in order so: game 1 => game id = 0 game 2 => game id = 1 etc. Of course there might be some minor problems because there is different number of teams but just test it. |

The crash occurs if you actually PLAY the dynasty. Simulating it won't cause any crash to happen. |

That is weird. After every played game the game goes to sim engine and adds the played game into the database. That doesn't make any difference (technically) as simming the game (you even hear the same "simming" sound when the game returns to menu). This problem is very puzzling. Does it happen every time you play Dynasty? Is it a recent problem? Perhaps it DOES have something to do with the modified schedule? ![]() Can you send a problematic roster file (and the dynasty file) here, so Sence and other schedule experts could take a look? Thanks. |
