Anyone know what the zone attack times are for this series? I can't imagine them being too different outside of the opening two periods of the first game and the 3rd period of this one. LA have a 3-0 lead but I don't think their offense has actually dominated in terms of zone possession time for that much of the series.

I don't know about that but LA is very, very defensive team who just use a lot counter attacks. And they have a great, Cup winning goaltender in Quick.

Brodeur has been phenomenal as well but he can't score goals for them. Today LA's defense was flawless... they play very self-denying hockey. Lots of shot blocking and forechecking in both sides of the rink.

Actually LA had more scoring chances when they were playing PK (from those counterattacks).

All top teams this year have been extremely defensive minded. Not that beautiful and entertaining hockey, really.

I vote for bigger goals. :D

But this is the NHL today...we see tons of beautiful plays during the regular season, but the team who ends up with the cup is the tougher, hard-hitter and defence-minded. Take a look at the past few years: Bruins, Blackhawks, Penguins, Red Wings, Ducks. Perhaps the only exception in this list is the Red Wings, who played beautifully.

But at this finals, the Devils are already burning in hell... :D

Franco

I feel sorry for Brodeur. He's been my favourite goalie since I first saw NHL in 2001. The Devils look pretty much tired, while the Kings are extremely solid in defence and have Quick... The most impressive thing about LA is their outstanding performance in Away games. Just unbelievable.

Brodeur has many years left... if he chooses so. He's still among the top-5 goalies in NHL.

There's no reason to retire when he's playing like that. Age is just a number... just look at Teemu Selanne... was the best scorer for the Ducks last season and he's turning 43.

Hasek is coming back and he won a Czech Extraliga title when he was what... 45?

I can't believe just as much as I can, that my favourite team is just 1 win away from the Cup, I believe in LA and Kopi to bring it to my (and obv his) country :)

Bruins, Blackhawks, Penguins, Red Wings, Ducks.

All those teams had a really deep offense though. Bruins could score in bunches (still can) though their PP was bad. Blackhawks had one of the most deepest offensive teams back then when they had guys like Ladd/Versteeg/Bruower contributing plus Byfuglien/Keith did a lot of scoring. Penguins didn't have as many scorers but Malkin/Crosby put up a tonne of pts. Wings and Ducks had top end talent and a deep roster as well.

LA has Kopitar then more top six players but there's a bit of a drop-off after Kopitar (Richards/Carter are still very good players not ppg type players atm. A lot of their 3rd/4th line though aren't goal scorers or used to be but haven't in the past season or two like Penner or Stoll. And their defence doesn't have many guys who'll contribute offensively, Doughty can but not as well as he did in 09-10 and Voynov is decent.

The system they play though is pretty efficient. And they constantly get to pucks first. Kovalchuk/Parise/Zajac have barely been able to do anything.

That was a terrible hockey game... almost 20 minutes without ONE SHOT ON GOAL... has to be a record.

Two periods of 0-0... lots of uncalled hooking, obstruction and interference. Good goaltending at the both sides though.

If you forget the PHI-PIT series, these playoffs have been all about very low scoring and extremely defensive play... if this is what hockey is becoming, then hockey has to change.... somehow.

I thought it was a pretty intense game. THere were shots and saves but just a lack of second chances. I agree the game needs to change.

I think there's lots of ways to increase offense like making the rink Finnish size, changing the offside rule so that during the PP, the centre-ice line is the offside line when the team on the PP has the puck in the attacking zone, other ways to change the offside rule that are a bit tougher to explain but decrease offside calls, and maybe even smaller goalie pads if it means more shots.

The NHL is always talking about marketing and expanding but the best way to increase your market is to improve the product. They've done nothing of note I can think of to improve the offensive side of the game since the initial lockout changes. They're lucky the game has a lot of good young offensive players now or this would've been bad with some of the 2004ish rosters.

Is it me or does this seem to be getting out of hand how quickly people want to "change the game" for short term TV ratings gains or whatever. It just seems through all the years, every time we have a change in rules or whatever NHL hockey ends up being exactly what this finals has been, in other words reaching equilibrium after 4 years. To me its entertaining, the offense is there, its just Broduer and Quick are playing really well (Broduer getting luck often though tbh) and both teams are actually disciplined.

I think in my mind what would make the playoffs even better is having a neutral arena that can pack 30-40 k or so just for the Cup Finals like Wembley Stadium type deal. That venue would be in my mind a great investment by the league, centralizing the event like the NFL's superbowl or the FA Cup in England. One location, One arena, One series and One cup. There would be festivities and whatnot around the place. Maybe thats too much of a capital heavy endeavor but in the long run it creates a mecca or wailing wall kind of feel in terms of ice hockey and sport.

But there haven't been any of these rule changes since 05-06. They've done nothing to increase the offense since. In fact, they let obstruction go more if anything and it's quite noticeable how much more inconsistent the refereeing is. If it was still strict then it would be more open.

I always like the idea of a neutral venue but it won't work for hockey in North America because hockey just isn't as popular around all parts of North America for it to work and it's a big continent. Someone from LA who wants to see the final if his team is in the clinching game won't be able to see it because the game is somewhere in the East. There's a small group of cities that would be able to consistently hold it (Toronto/Mtl/Van/Minnesota/some of the Eastern US cities like NY). And it's also unfair to the teams that make it deep in the playoffs and get money from selling tickets or merchandise in their home arena.

yeh ur right :( but financially they could still do revenue sharing. it be a cool thing, the atmosphere would be insane. There was a IIHF game in Dortmund, Germany I think in front of 75 K or maybe 50 K, USA vs Germany and the atmosphere was amazing. Im a huge soccer fan but I couldn't help noticing how much more entertaining hockey was in that venue than soccer.

the rule changes though that Im talking about, I'm comparing it to other sports like Football, Soccer, Baseball and Basketball. Basketball has gradually changed into a technical game rather than physical in the NBA (look at the late 80's Detroit Pistons and let me know whether Chris Bosh would still be playing lool) but I cannot see how the NHL could follow suite and go more technical.

Those changes you mentioned are interesting, I've actually never heard of them before maybe the NHL could go and try one or two of them, but personally I think keeping it the same for more than a decade will help the sport develop. Case in point: look at icing. No one gets injured anymore, players now finally have respect. I also see the headshots decreasing going into next season. Some of my favourite sports are popular because they havn't changed any fundemental rules. Im not talking about implementing video review, Im talking about real rules like Cricket, Rugby, Soccer or Baseball and even Basketball to some degree.

Cricket and Rugby did something interesting in the late stages of the past century. They introduced TV and spectator friendly versions of their sports. Rugby was always TV friendly but they introduced a 7vs7 format instead of a full squad on the pitch. Cricket also introduced a 20 overs mode which fits the 3 hour modern day TV telecast.

Lol i gone on a tagent but back on topic...LETS GO DEVILS!

(btw this is an awesome picture)
