Anyone got NHL 98 working? I only managed to install it properly on a virtual Win98 machine, but it lags like mad in-game and the intro freezes at certain points, leading to an eventual crash. Help?

If I ran away, I'd never have the strength
To go very far
How would they hear the beating of my heart
Will it grow cold
The secret that I hide, will I grow old
How will they hear
When will they learn
How will they know

I recently upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate, which supports Windows Virtual PC (I have virtual XP as an OS), and installed NHL 99 (my favourite besides 2004) which lags like crazy as well. And its stuck at 640x480 as well, so I can't get it any larger. I've explored tons of options but I can't find a solution.

Maybe upgrade to a virtual XP system, if that makes a difference?

I've searched Google high and low, and not a single forum actually explains how to run it. Like I said, VirtualBox runs it, but lags like a maniac. And I have to skip the intro and lower the player detail in order to run it at all...

The installer works fine, though.

I found this info on this thread about running virtual machines;

Quote:

Virtual systems don't use the physical hardware in the computer. They have their own emulated hardware. If the games have specific hardware requirements, a virtual system isn't going to work.

So I'm trying to figure out how to adjust visual settings in the virtual machine.

I just installed VirtualBox and it gives you many options, as to how big you want your virtual hard drive, dedicated video memory, sound, USB, all that. The only thing is you'll need a CD or ISO of the operating system you want (I used my old Windows XP Home disk) for the machine to boot from. I gave my virtual machine all my video memory (these can be adjusted at any time, which I like) so once I install and run NHL 99 we'll see how it plays :)

I use it too, but I limited VRAM to 24 MB, RAM to 64 MB and HDD space to 2 GB.

BTW, if you have issues with sound or 16 colours, see this tutorial - https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=9918

I found out is that the best way is to download PSX iso and emulate with and can have wide screen resolution even with the right psx emulator graphics plugin settings. My other solution is that I am building an retro gaming pc with voodoo grapics card :) cant wait to play nhl 98 with native 3d support on PC wich only works with 3dfx cards. My cards is already at my parents home.In two weeks I am going to build the PC.

It may not be exactly what you're looking for but NHL 98 can be played on some retro gaming sites. They're not downloadable games for the PC but at least they are playable. This is the site I always use: http://www.retrouprising.com/arcade.php?q=nhl
I hope this helps!
