Of course most of you know this by now but here is the confirmation article TSN.CA ARTICLE Why do you think he's taking a year off? We know 3 things about Thomas, at least in my opinion: 1: Hes a sick goalie 2: He's an idiot (low IQ/no brain) The dude is from Flint, Michigan which fatty Michael Moore made famous once upon a time, I think personally Thomas is over himself for having overcome all odds and finally made a career in the NHL. Sometimes when people start from dire conditions and suddenly find success, they have a disdain for others who are not as lucky and complain about their situation. Anyways the US is messed both left and right, but keeping this just about hockey how well do you guys think Rask will perform next season? Does this open the doors for Luongo in Boston? |

I've heard that Thomas is having family problems, as his wife left him in December, and that they are trying to get back together. |

Sorry I removed the political/Obama/tea party stuff from the post (also fairly sure Ron Paul isn't part of the tea party but that's something different). I don't think it's fair to judge him as a hockey player based on his political beliefs no matter how strange they may seem to us. I'm sure there's a decent number of Americans who believe in the same thing anyway and they probably aren't all crazy even if we disagree with their political belief although I agree that it's strange for an athlete to post that sort of stuff or announce that via twitter or whatever. I've seen some interview with him (excluding the ones during a game/intermission) and he seems like a normal friendly guy. In the hockey part, I don't think Boston will go with another goalie. They'll roll with Rask and see what he can do. I don't expect him to be as successful as Thomas was in 10-11 but I think he can do an adequate job as a starter. If he fails to then I would think they go for a trade but goalie trades mid-season for a starter rarely happen now and it's usually in the summer. I would suggest they sign a Mike Smith type castaway if he becomes available this summer. Start with Rask and maybe hope this sort of guy can take over. Rask was average this year in the games he started from what I saw but he was the backup and it's usually tough to do well as a backup without momentum. Vokoun is a UFA during the summer but I think he'll only sign with a team which gives him a starting job because if he goes in a backup role at the age of 36 then he probably won't get back. He got outplayed by Neuvirth late in the season and didn't do a good job of holding the position earlier either and then Holtby was chosen over him as well once he got healthy so I'm not sure if he's a good option anymore. I also don't think Thomas is gonna be able to resurrect his career and I think he should've retired and annulled his contract considering his age. |

ok you are right politics set aside but what I meant which got lost in translation is the "Dooms Day" gloom Thomas seems to be in. I dont care if he met with the president or not, thats his right, i was trying to get at more the mental side craziness which isnt imo a stretch to assume when looking at his actions. he seems to be super reactive to stuff like this is all im saying. Anyways Im not sure Rask is going to be able to start more than 50 games. his stats were amazing to start the season, he was top 5 in Sv% and GAA but then again he had fewer starts. Rask might become a Backstrom or max off at a little under kipper. a lot of people seem to think either way rask will get a huge contract, I think they may settle for a 1 year extension type deal worth a bit more than his first contract at 3.5-3.8 million then based on this coming season they would reassess. Vokoun will prob land on one of the teams vying for luongo who won't get him. as you mentioned the caps no longer need him. |

Well I dont see something wrong on it, if he wants it, then why not. Its his decision. Hasek made it several times and could return (altrough he was not as good as he was before) I personally like Thomas as a player, and dont have a problem with his believes (whatever it is), we live in freedom, everyone can believe in what they want. I hope Bruins will not sign Luongo, he is too much overrated, and his price is too much high, there are many better value for money on market then Luongo. Rask could be starter, he will now have time to proove it. Vokoun probably cant be a starter in big teams anymore, but teams like Tampa, Edmonton or Toronto should be good option for him. |

Oh I was wrong, his rights got traded and he signed with Pittsburgh. Marc-Andre Fleury wasn't a great starter last year but I think Vokoun looks like he's gonna be playing a backup role now. Wanna hear something funny? I've heard that Colorado has several doomsday type of people and lots of survival bunkers etc. So some people are saying that's why Thomas picked that spot to go to. But believing that a financial system will collapse is nothing crazy. The media always underreported it. The conspiracy theories (or I'd call them alternative media) were talking about the financial recession of 2008 well before it happened and they also did a good job showing how it didn't have to do with a mortgage crisis. It' hasn't really gotten better (people in office will obviously say it has). So atm, there's lots of reports on how it's getting worse, some are more extreme than the others and that seems to be what he posted a link to online. If he does come back though, it won't be with Boston and if he doesn't have a selke winner+norris dman+a decent defensive system in front of him then I'm not sure how he does on another team. |

yeh in colorado or utah there are unused missile silos, this guy and his wife turned them into livable bunkers and are making a fortune. very smart idea lol Ocelar you mentioned Hasek, I hate him both as a player and person. Tim Thomas I dont hate as a player, I dont hate him as a person either but I dont like what he is doing and I honestly think it's all based on fear mongering. He is holding up the Bruins who will pay him a lot of money to take time off. I wouldnt have thought much of it had he not posted some radical things on twitter/facebook. One thing is for certain, the guy is a hard worker and I'm sure if there is anyone who can take a year off and come back, thats Thomas. Im sure he will continue working out during his time off, as much as his actions are questionable, I'm certain he wont get a pot belly. Wow nettles i just read about that vokoun thing you mentioned...they got him for a 7th round pick...what a bargain |

Well as a player Hasek is legend, and one of best goalies in history of hockey, but his actions in last years made him an old fool. 2 years ago he won czech extraliga with Pardubice (were he also born) and after that he should retire for good. I dont understand why he risked his name in KHL in 45, and now announced he dont bother with that league and wants only NHL contract. He has lack of self-respect and respect to others if he thinks he could catch on top level in 47 after one-year break. Basically here in Czech rep. he lost all respect he had, most people thinks he lost his mind. There are talks that he is doing this because he is out of money. Voks to Pens, dont understand too much this trade, well for Caps its 7th round better then nothing but 2M for backup is too much, Pens need some D-man or good winger to 2nd line instead. Vokoun probably really wants the cup, with this contract he probably lost any chance to be a starter in future. |

yeh I'm very biased when it comes to Hasek. I was away from Canada for the years in which he was in Detroit, but other than that he always played for teams I hated lol especially Ottawa...ugh but yes he is a legend. At $2 M, I dont think personally Vokoun could have gotten any cheaper. What I don't understand is why they didnt just sign him for 1 year. I hate these two year deals. maybe give him $2.75 M for one year and move on from there. Less risky. That 7th round pick is very suspicious, maybe the Capitals see something no one else sees. no idea lol |

I think it's hard to say if Thomas made the right decision or not. But I think leaving a year out with the risk to never play again is better than playing terrible for the Bruins next season because of his personal problems. I mean of course he lets the franchise with a unused cap space of 5 millions, but if he can't really focus on hockey because he has other problems, the team is helped more if doesn't play at all. Goaltending is 75 % mentally, if he can't have a clear mind he isn't able to help his team. And the Vokoun-Trade, I think it's a win for the Pens, they just gave up a 7th round pick and got a very solid and experienced backup. Johnson played a bad season this year and Fleury did have to play too many games this season. |
