The KHL has presented a plan to expand the league to 64 teams

Quote:

He sees the KHL’s expansion to consume all of Europe, with one KHL Conference in and around Russia and a European Conference with a Scandinavian Sub-Conference (Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway) and a Central European Sub-Conference (Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, France, Italy, Great Britain, Netherlands, Belgium).

In all, he sees 64 teams in two conferences of 32 teams. The league would have a regular season of 62 games (38 games inside the conferences, 24 between conferences in two to four road trips to the other conference for each team) and a playoffs of five rounds featuring 32 teams starting within the sub-conferences.

The 2nd option would be a Champions League just like in football, but they would like to start with just 8 teams.

Lichtner showed a proposal with a Champions League type of competition starting with eight teams (top-7 nations plus qualifier) before extending it to 12 and 16 years later on.

“Even the gigantic UEFA Champions League played with eight clubs in the first three years,” Lichtner said.

I'm in favor of the Champions League-plan, because I think that many European leagues can't survive without their tradional top-teams. On the other hand a "Super-League" would be a great chance for European club hockey to reach an other level and maybe even surpass the NHL some day ... What are your thoughts on this?

I like the Champions league plan, but I think it should start with 12 teams. Only 8 teams...? Would be a bit too dull for my taste. But 64 teams? A bit too interesting for my taste :D.

Personally I dont believe that KHL will have 64 teams in next 10 years (if even ever have). Medvedev is good leader and businessman but Russians have sometimes great plans but lack of action, and sence for reality. And europe conversatism is strong and many leagues are not opened to KHL ideas. Of course its a great solution for small leagues, but any big leagues like Elitserien, SM-Liiga, DEL, NLA have never been interested. Its just KHL´s dream, but in reality they will be glad for 30 teams in next 5 years.

In Europe is even problem to made Champions league, there were so many projects (European league, Super Six, Continental Cup, Champions league) and every time it ends with failure. Also that european trophy is just better option then summer friendly matches. Personally I like Champions league idea, still cant understand, why leagues want competition with 32 clubs, thats nonsence. Hockey is not football and model with 12-16 teams is quite enough for now.

Bot from my point of view, not much will change in next 5 years.
New Home is coming!!!
