Road game in Oulu. It started nicely as Ilkka Mikkola got a hooking penalty. However, it was Kärpät who scored. Jari Viuhkola (who came back from the long injury reserve) robbed the puck from Melart in the neutral zone and placed it so calmly in the net. 1-0 Kärpät.

Posted Image

Julius Junttila made it 2-0...

Posted Image

...and Mikko Niemelä 3-0 from Viuhkola's pass.

Posted Image

Young Nykopp got a consolation goal for HIFK...

Posted Image

...but the goalie Backlund was like a brick wall for the rest of the game. He was man of the match without a doubt.

Miikka Wiikman on 2nd! That's cool. I played with him on the same team during hockey summer camp back in ´97. Gonna see if I can find our team picture somewhere. :)

@Chosenone: I agree... Levo and Java were true Ässät-legends. I wasn't aware of Levo's death. RIP.

Actually, I really really need to correct myself. It was Java who died, not Levo. :D And I guess you might have heard of it already. He drank himself to his own grave, which is really sad... :/

Really? That's awesome! I just hate Miikka a little... 2006 SM-Liiga finals, you know... :D

Yes... pretty much the same story with Tony Arima (HIFK legend). I had a friend who played for Kiekko-Espoo and he said Arima was easily the toughest guy he had played against. He wasn't huge or anything but really physical, passionate player... and borderline dirty too.

Hagman was a heavy drinker too... for many of these guys hockey is everything and when the career is over you have nothing to live for.

PS: I was present when Java passed Matti Hagman in the SML all-time scoring list... back in the 90's. It was a HIFK home game... can't remember if Ässät won the game though.

Home game against JyP, Jyväskylä. HIFK got a good start again as Markus Granlund made it 1-0 from Eriksson's pass.

Posted Image

Perrin was once again almost unstoppable. Here he ties the game with a razor sharp wrist shot. It was a shorthanded, breakaway goal. Perrin puts these in with a great percentage. 1-1.

Posted Image

There was a lot of traffic on the JyP goal and somehow the puck found its way in the net. Ilari Melart got the goal. 2-1 HIFK.

Posted Image

But JyP came back fast. Hubacek was waiting on the goal corner and he got a great assist from Max Warn. Game was tied 2-2.

Posted Image

But HIFK was on fire tonight. First Mika Hannula made it 3-2...

Posted Image

...and then in the 3rd period Arttu Luttinen increased the lead to 4-2.

Posted Image

Bradley had tried to instigate a fight against HIFK enforcer Melart in the previous games as well. When the game was 5-2 Melart thought it would be a good moment to answer the bell.

Good, quite even fight. Perhaps Melart was getting the best shots in. Misconduct for both.

Posted Image

Disappointing third period for JyP. 0 points for them from Helsinki.

PLUSMINUS: Jokela is actually 11th in the League stats as well. Great season. Do you have to ask why Klubertanz has been out of the roster for the last 10 games, huh?

Home game against HIFK's "suburban enemies" Blues. Espoo is a western part of greater Helsinki area and known for its wealthy residents and poor(ish) hockey culture.

But then again they have produced some fine players for Finland, like Teemu Selanne and Jere Lehtinen, to name two prime examples.

Either way, game started with a pretty goal by Marco Rosa. He went through 3 HIFK defenders and calmly placed the puck between Norja's pads. 0-1 Blues.

Posted Image

But HIFK answered. Arttu Luttinen directed the puck in from Melart's pass. 1-1.

Posted Image

Ville Peltonen made it 2-1. Riksman was frustrated because there was no screen an Peltonen's shot could have been saved.

Posted Image

Blues pulled Riksman and took an extra attacker. But Eriksson stole the puck in the neutral zone and put it in the empty net. 3-1 HIFK.

Posted Image

Important 3 points again.

Coach decided to "shake it up" a little bit and gave two young players a roster spot.

Mikko Vainonen is a big defenseman who still moves and skates quite well.

Posted Image

Iiro Pakarinen made a comeback to the roster. He's a decently sized 3rd/4th line winger with good defensive abilities.

Posted Image

And to everyone's amazement it was Mikko Vainonen who started the scoring. What a way to start your playing career. 1-0 HIFK.

Posted Image

Mika Hannula made it 2-0 HIFK. Great shot. Hannula hasn't produced very good numbers but he has been trying a lot.

Posted Image

Mikko Jokela doesn't score often but tonight he showed that he actually can put the puck in the net. 3-0 HIFK.

Posted Image

Amazingly, also the other new roster addition, Pakarinen scored tonight. Adding these guys was a great move by the coach.

Posted Image

When Eero Somervuori and Corey Elkins scored the 5-0 and 6-0 goals, Ässät goalie Raanta had seen enough.

Posted Image

Juha Järvenpää took Raanta's place.

Posted Image

Pihlman ruined Ortio's shutout but it didn't matter much. A convincing 6-1 win for HIFK.

A home game against Pelicans Lahti. First period was scoreless but in the second period HIFK started scoring again. Ville Varakas made his first goal of the season. 1-0 HIFK.

Posted Image

Markus Granlund reflected Perrault's pass from the goal corner. 2-0 HIFK.

Posted Image

In the 3rd period Pelicans defender Seikola netted a huge slapshot. No chance for Norja. 2-1.

Posted Image

Then Jari Sailio got a breakaway but Joonas Kuusela made an incredible save.

Posted Image

Pelicans pulled their goalie and desperately tried to even the game but Mika Hannula ruined their evening by shooting it to the empty net.

Another win for Mika Norja and HIFK.
