Yeah... it's going extremely well... considering how tough start I got.

But that's what a long hiatus does... the skills come back slowly but surely.

A road game against TPS Turku.

Veteran forward Kimmo Kuhta made it back to the roster. He hasn't enjoyed the trust of the coaching staff but got a chance tonight.

Posted Image

The tallest man of the SM-Liiga, Marko Anttila started the scoring. 0-1 TPS.

Posted Image

Mika Hannula tied the game from Elkins' pass. 1-1.

Posted Image

Then Talaja got a penalty and Marko Anttila scored another goal. 0-2 TPS in powerplay.

Posted Image

Tapio Laakso increased the TPS lead to 1-3...

Posted Image

...and Camilo Miettinen to 1-4.

Posted Image

Söderholm was frustrated.

Posted Image

Joakim Eriksson lifted HIFK hopes with his 2-4 goal...

Posted Image

...and Joel Perrault even more. He scored and the game was 3-4.

Posted Image

But TPS was full of determination tonight and stole 3 points from Helsinki.

Kyle Klubertanz was back in the lineup after a long benching by the coach.

Posted Image

Lukko started scoring at 11:56 in the 1st period.

Posted Image

Roope Talaja tied the game from Ilari Melart's pass.

Posted Image

Martti Järventie is not known as a big goalscorer but when it's an empty net, he can put it in. Nice backhand shot. 2-1 HIFK.

Posted Image

Joel Perrault continued his scoring streak and made the 3-1 and 4-1 goals for HIFK. He has been really effective in the last few games.

Posted Image

But Lukko didn't give anything for free tonight. Ex-HIFK Jerry Ahtola made it 4-2.

Posted Image

Lauri Tukonen 4-3. HIFK was starting to feel the pressure.

Posted Image

When Sailio netted the ENG and changed numbers to 5-3, the whole team thought it was over. How wrong they were.

Posted Image

Lukko made an incredible comeback. First Juhani Jasu made it 5-4...

Posted Image

...and then 14 seconds before the end, Teemu Nurmi evened the score.

Posted Image

HIFK got a good lesson that a hockey game actually lasts for 60 full minutes. And the final nail to the coffin was Pesonen's OT goal.

Posted Image

Besides being hugely outshot Lukko showed tonight how to play hockey on the road. To be fair, it wasn't Ortio's greatest night, either. Only 22 shots against and he allowed 6 goals.

GAME 54 (Simulated): KalPa-HIFK 1-2
Kuopion Jäähalli, Kuopio Finland

Standings. The loss today was fatal to KalPa's playoff hopes. HIFK, Kärpät and Jokerit secured their playoff spots. When there's four games left to play, only one playoff spot is still unclaimed... it's going to be a tight battle.

Home game against HPK Hämeenlinna. They're a fast and young team who cause constant problems to HIFK's slow and rather heavy defenders.

The visitors started the scoring at 2:07. Arsi Piispanen made it 0-1 HPK.

Posted Image

Markus Granlund evened the score with this hard slapshot. 1-1. Pretty easy goal and Tolvanen can take the blame for that one.

Posted Image

Mikko Jokela took a penalty and Jaakko Turtiainen made it 1-2 HPK in powerplay.

Posted Image

Joakim Eriksson evened it to 2-2. Eriksson is very volatile player. One night he can be the King of the rink... and the other night he's an invisible man. Either way this was a great shot.

Posted Image

Marko Luomala 2-3 HPK. Hard slapshot from the blueline. Norja was screened by the HIFK defender and couldn't see the puck coming.

Posted Image

Mikko Jokela has been the best D-man of HIFK this season. He even led the League plusminus stats at some point. Here he offers a HUGE open ice bodycheck on Rendulic.

Posted Image

Joel Perreault's PPG evened it to 3-3. This game was a fight.

Posted Image

Somervuori got a gift from Mikko Tolvanen who passed the puck straight to him. 4-3 HIFK.

Posted Image

Even Mikko Kurvinen can score when there's an empty net. 5-3 HIFK. The win looked secured. But...

Posted Image

...amazingly HPK came behind, Joni Tuominen scored 2 goals in 30 seconds and forced the game to the OT. The 5-5 goal came when there was only 2 seconds on the clock. HIFK coach was furious.

Posted Image

It went to OT, which was scoreless... and then to shootout.

Posted Image

Melart and Eriksson scored, Norja saved all Kerho's attempts and saved two points for his team.

Last regular season home game. This was very important game for Kärpät as they're fighting for the last playoff spot.

Kärpät opened the scoring with their top line. Haataja put it in from Huml's and Kahkonen's passes. 0-1 Kärpät.

Posted Image

Sailio is a physical, gritty player who doesn't score often. Today was an exception. The goal looked a lot like him... not pretty. 1-1.

Posted Image

Mikko Kurvinen skated behind the Kärpät goal and gave a great pass to Mika Hannula. Hannula scored. 2-1 HIFK. But Kärpät came back. Here's Viuhkola scoring his second of the night. 2-2 even.

Posted Image

Huml has been effective throughout the whole season.

Posted Image

Viuhkola was injured almost the whole season but has returned to Kärpät lineup. He's always dangerous and tied the game. 2-2.

Posted Image

In the last minute of the game Granlund scored out of the blue...

Posted Image

...and Kärpät pulled their goalie. It didn't work this time as Somervuori put it into the empty net. 4-2.

Posted Image

Nice way to end the regular season at home. Kärpät is a skilled team which is now, surprisingly, in danger to drop out of the playoffs entirely. They have an away game against Lukko left, which they have to win. Otherwise they're OUT.

Nice routine victory for HIFK.

Getting excited to read the playoffs! Did I read that right? Only 4 make the playoffs?

You better step it up in the playoffs and hold on to your leads, else you might exit before you were hoping :D

No... 8 teams make it to the playoffs. I have used red line in my standings reports to mark the playoff teams.

In real SM-Liiga they also play playoff "qualifying round". Teams 6-10 must go through that first and 2 out of 4 qualify to the actual playoffs. SML introduced that to avoid the worse teams selling all their players when the playoff hopes were gone.

Of course we don't have that in the mod as it was introduced somewhere in 2005 or so. But it's no big deal... 8 teams still have the actual playoffs.

Actually it's good only on paper but it's pretty stupid system as it screws up the regular season excitement. Just imagine 10 out of 14 teams qualifying to the playoffs... the reg.season games don't always have that much at stake... especially for the leading teams. Old system (cutting the line at 8 like it is in NHL 2004) was much better. 50%-55% percentage of teams going to the playoffs is good... in the NHL it's 16 out of 30.

In Sweden 4 last teams have to play a disqualification season with 4 best Allsvenskan teams (second division) and there is a real threat of dropping out of the Elitserien every year. It's much more interesting system.
