Trent's HIFK 2012-2013 SM-Liiga Season; Can Big'n'Nasty IFK live up to its rep?

I completely agree that the Swedish system is much better (although you had a little wrong there, it's actually 2 last teams from Elitserien, and 4 best from Allsvenskan). There's way too little "movement" going on between SM-Liiga and Mestis. And it doesn't look like Jukurit (Mestis-champion) is going to make it past Ilves (SM-liiga 14th) this year either.

Just imagine if we had this system this year. Then TPS, Ilves, Jukurit, KooKoo, TuTo and Jokipojat would have played against eachother. I could just imagine the sweet TuTo-TPS for a place in SM-liiga, in the sold-out Kupittaan Jäähalli :worship:

As you can see Kärpät is OUT of the playoffs, which is a big surprise. They lost their games against HIFK and Lukko and against all the odds, SaiPa got in as they managed to squeeze a win over Ilves.

HIFK is going to play Blues in the quarterfinals. Playoff preview soon.

Matt Bradley who? Should he be Daryl Boyce? Possible mistake in the rosters? Other than that the stats look pretty accurate.

According to Wikipedia Matt Bradley played in Mestis (TuTo). I have no idea why he was placed in the JyP team. Definitely a roster mistake. There was so many players coming in and out during the NHL lockout so I didn't catch that. He got into a fight against Melart in one of my season games. :)

Interesting pairings. There was a lot of discussion about them in the press and the expert opinions were divided. We asked Urheilulehti's Petteri Sihvonen to make his own predictions.

JyP (1st) vs. SaiPa (8th):
No contest here. JyP won the regular season. They have a strong defense and good goaltending. SaiPa is definitely an underdog here.
Key players: Perrin
JyP advances 4-1.

Jokerit (2nd) vs. Ässät (7th)
End of the season was bit of a rollercoaster for both teams. Jokerit has the size and strength advantage... they have huge defensemen (Lindbohm, Väänänen, Majesky and Nordlund) but then again their goaltending is bit of a question mark. Raanta has been solid throughout the whole season. Jarkko Ruutu is another question mark. Can he stay out of the box and help his team?
Key players: Ruutu, Filppula, Armia
Jokerit advances 4-3.

HIFK (3rd) vs. Blues (6th)
HIFK is a slowish, old team with no real leading scorers. On the other hand they have a lot of experience and a great goalie in Ortio. They have a World Champion (Peltonen), Olympic Gold winner (Hannula) and many SM-Liiga Champions in their lineup. And they're not a "traditional" HIFK team. They're not as big and bad as they used to be and they don't take as many stupid penalties as before. Blues is much younger team with a lot of potential in the offense. Rinkinen, Rosa and Kuusela put up some respectable numbers in the regular season. Still, I go with IFK... they have traditionally been extremely tough opponent for the Blues.
Key players: Ortio, Rosa
HIFK advances 4-1.

Tappara (4th) vs. HPK (5th)
Tappara has one advantage: Two good goaltenders. Both Noronen and Metsola are winning goalies and Barkov is probably the best young player in the league right now. HPK is young and doesn't have quite as much talent. Vanttinen, Piispala and Luomala have been sensational though. But this is easy to predict. It's all Tappara.
Key players: Barkov, Vanttinen
Tappara advances 4-2.

Thanks, all.

I will play the first game tomorrow... or the day after.

Little "creative break" is good... to think about tactics and stuff. :D

HIFK playoff run got a good start with a lucky goal by Roope Talaja. His weak backhand shot took a ricochet from a stick of a Blues D-man. 1-0 HIFK.

Posted Image

Arto Laatikainen tied the game during Sailio's penalty. 1-1.

Posted Image

Arttu Luttinen made it 2-1 HIFK, shorthanded in the beginning of the second period.

Posted Image

But Blues came back. First Marco Rosa tied it 2-2...

Posted Image

...and the Laatikainen stroke again in PP. They made IFK pay for Captain Peltonen's penalty. 2-3 Blues.

Posted Image

Coach was psyching the guys on the bench.

Posted Image

Ville Varakas (aka Richie Rich) played a great game tonight and evened the score with a backhand shot. 3-3.

Posted Image

Then Mikko Vainonen put it in from the blueline. Dirty goal but everything counts. 4-3 HIFK.

Vainonen really thanked the coaching staff for the confidence. A goal, three shots and +3 tonight. Perfect performance and a man of the match.

Posted Image

He's a big kid who really paid back for his roster spot tonight.

Posted Image

Blues pulled their goalie and tried to pressure... but Jari Sailio put it into the empty net. HIFK took 1-0 lead in the series.

Game #2 started slow. 1st period didn't have goals or penalties. But at 1:10 of the second period Blues stroke. Tomi Sallinen made it 1-0 after a breakaway.

Posted Image

Joakim Eriksson tied the game from Söderholm's great assist. 1-1.

Posted Image

Melart tripped Huhtala from behind and Blues got a penalty shot. Huhtala missed the net. HIFK sighed with relief... the game was still 1-1.

Posted Image

3rd period was scoreless again but Blues won the game in OT. Rinkinen and Rosa were virtually alone against Ortio and they put it in.

Posted Image

Blues celebrated wildly. The series is now tied 1-1. A well deserved win too.
