My fingers have been itching enough now its time for a for a new season report. And the team Ive chosen is: ![]() The main reason why Ive chosen Rgle is that there hasnt been a season report from the Swedish Elite League yet, or at least I havent seen it. Second is that I really wanted a challenge. I didnt want to choose the best team in the league and cruise my way into the playoffs (which is, I know, not a guarantee in NHL 04 but still). Rgle has the lowest overall in SEL inside NHL 04 and they had the worst record in the league this season with 10 wins, 11 ties and 34 losses. My main challenge with this season is to do better than the real team and try to make my way to the playoffs. My settings will be as following: AI Settings: Trents AI settings CPU: +1 CPU Trades: Off Period length: 6 Penalties: 4 Fighting: 3 Line Changes: Manual Face-off ratings: Adjusted down to 50 I will try update the thread about two times a week but if my studies isn't putting much weight on me it might be more often. I'll be back in a few days with a preview and the pre-season schedule. Cheers! |

Sweet Good luck, it's going to be a challenge for sure. But i guess you'll survive it. And if this is even half as good as your last reports have been, that doesn't even matter

That's very nice of you considering that I have only finished one season report comparing to you! Jokes aside, I hope this thread will be the start of many more.

After a disappointing preseason which they ended with a 3-0-7 record, they continued to underperform in the first half of the regular season, standing at a 9-7-10 record by the end of November. But things turned a little better in December where they sorted out most of their defensive problems and earning six victories in the process. But things went south come January.
After a 3-1 win against VIK Vasteras HK they went into a slump and lost five straight games to bring them to a 15-13-14 record by the end of the month and a ticket to the round-robin promotion tournament to the SEL (also known as Kvalserien) was far away and pretty much out of reach. Even the pre-qualification series seemed like a bridge to far for them. But Rogle didn’t want to end their season early. They won six of their last ten games finishing 5th in the regular season with a 21-15-16 record. It wasn’t enough to end up in the top three spots and securing a place in the promotion tournament but enough to make it to the pre-qualification series.

Final standings Hockeyallsvenskan 2011-2012

Rogle performed well in a tight series which they ended with a 2-2-2 record and ending up with 13 points, the same as Malmo Redhawks. Here, the goal difference would be the tiebreaker. Malmo had 19 goals for and 13 against, giving them a +6 difference. But Rogle had 22 goals for and 14 against and a +8 difference and secured the last spot to the promotion tournament with just a two-goal margin.

Final standings Pre-qualification series

Coming in to the tournament as an outsider, the major part of Swedish hockey media ruled out Rogle as a condenter for one of the two spots in SEL next season. They were going be proven wrong. They began beating Djurgardens IF 4-3 and followed it up with a 5-1 win against Orebro HK then suffered two straight losses, 3-1 against BIK Karlskoga and 0-3 against Timra IK. Brought down to earth, or so everyone thought, they went on to win three of their next four games. And with Djurgarden behind them in the standings by four points with two games left, Rogle needed just one more win to take one of the two spots in the SEL next season. And with a three-point effort from Christopher Liljewall and a 25-save effort from Jonas Fransson, they cruised to a 4-1 win against Orebro HK. They had shockingly made sure that Djurgarden got demoted to Allsvenskan for the first time in team history. But most important, Rogle was once again back in the elite of Swedish hockey.

Final standings Promotion tournament

Now, let’s fast forward to August where we are right now. New players have been added and a few has also left the team. They have been on ice for almost a month and will soon play their first pre-season game against the SEL champions Brynas IF. But where does the team stand right now? Are they ready to face the tougher opposition? Will head coach Dan Tangnes make the impact needed for them to stay in the league? We’ll go through the team bit by bit to see if we can find some answers and perhaps more questions.

Goaltenders

From left: Martin Gerber and Jonas Fransson

Arrivals: Martin Gerber (Vaxjo Lakers)
Departures: Joel Gistedt (BIK Karlskoga)

Neither Jonas Fransson or Joel Gistedt played great last season.
Both had similar statistics; Fransson had a .908% save percentage and a 2,80 goals against average and Gistedt had a .913% save percentage and a 2,84 goals against average. But Fransson managed to improve his game when Rogle hit the pre-qualification series
and finished with a .925 save percentage and a 1,98 goals against average. His save percentage went up to .935% and his goals against average landed on 2,20 in the promotion tournament. While you should never stare yourself blind on those two categories Fransson was in fact a big reason why they advanced in the first place. He usually bounced right back after a bad game and gave the rest of the team the confidence they needed. With these facts in mind, the acquirement of Gerber might seem a little unjust. But Rogle management has made the right choice.

Fransson has never been able to grab a starting role in the SEL. The closest he’s been was back in 2006-2007 when he started 21 games for Linkoping, ending up with a .895% save percentage and a 3,18 goals against average. Gerber, on the other hand has tons of experience from high-level hockey. Aside from his eight seasons in the NHL(which he won the Stanley Cup with Carolina Hurricanes back in 2006) he has always performed in the SEL. In his three stints in the league, his save percentage hasn’t been under .922% and his goals against average over 2.18. He may be 37 but considering he’s coming from a great season with Vaxjo he sure has a lot left in the tank.

Therefore, Rogle should feel secure in this departure. With Gerber as a starter and Fransson handling the backup duty, they have a more than adequate goaltending duo. And if Rogle’s defense performs on the same level as last season, they are going to need it.

Defense

Top row from left: Tom Preissing, Martin Strbak, Lasse Kukkonen and Daniel Sondell
Bottom row from left: Jesper Jensen, Victor Panelin-Borg and Alexander Bonsaksen

Arrivals: Martin Strbak (Lev Poprad), Lasse Kukkonen (Metall Magnitogorsk), Tom Preissing (Biel)
Departures: Sean Curry (Team unknown), Daniel Glimmerwall (Retired), Hampus Lindholm (Anaheim Ducks), Rasmus Bengtsson (Muskegon Lumberjacks), Jonathan Zaar (Helsingborgs HC)

A bit shaky last season, the defense along with the rest of the team pulled themselves together come post-season. Daniel Sondell was arguably their best D-man last season, having 31 points in the regular season, 6 points in the pre-qualification series and additional 9 in the promotion tournament, all of which were league-best. His skills on the powerplay will be invaluable for Rogle this season and will probably see most ice-time of any player on the team. With the exception of Daniel Glimmerwall and Sean Curry, the three other regular defensemen who played last season; Jesper Jensen, Alexander Bonsaksen and Victor Panelin-Borg are still with the team but will probably see themselves getting less ice-time with the additions of Strbak, Kukkonen and Preissing. The trio all have lots of experience, both from the NHL and various leagues around Europe and will strengthen the defensive core. Neither of them are expected to contribute offensively, with perhaps the exception of Preissing, who earlier in his career chipped in 25-40 points per season. If he can find that offensive touch again, Rogle will have two lethal weapons on the point on the powerplay.

What we have here is a pretty good mixture with experienced veterans, hungry youngsters, puckmoving players and defensive-minded players. It’s far from the best defensive line-up in the league but it can be good enough to avoid the bottom-two spots at the end of the season. But it’s going to take a lot of work.
Out of all parts of the team, this is the one part that coach Dan Tangnes has to work the most with.

Offense

Top row from left: Mike Iggulden, Mathias Tjarnqvist, Jakob Johansson and Fredrik Warg
Middle row from left: Alexander Barta, Tim Brithén, Viktor Lindgren and Christopher Liljewall
Bottom row from left: Nils Bergstrom, Dennis Everberg, Alexander Lindqvist-Hansen and Daniel Sylwander

Arrivals: Alexander Barta (Malmo Redhawks), Mathias Tjarnqvist (Djurgarden), Thomas Spelling (Herning), Fredrik Warg (Dinamo Riga), Mike Iggulden (Vaxjo)
Departures: Eric Himelfarb (Linkoping), Alexander Johansson (Vaxjo), Simon Olsson (Orebro), Alexander Bergstrom (Malmo Redhawks)

Carrying them all the way through the regular season to the promotion tournament, the offense was arguably the best part of the team last season. Eric Himelfarb had 60 points (21+39) in the regular season and added further 12 in the post-season. Regular contributors were also Alexander Bergstrom who had 32 points (15+17) in 38 games and Alexander Johansson who had 23 points(13 + 10) in 35 games. But unfortionally, they all choose not to resign with the team and to improve their scoring furthermore Rogle management went out shopping. And they wound up with six new forwards. But have they added quality or just quantity?

Alexander Barta is a great two-way forward who contributes defensively and also can add some scoring to his repertoire. He has roughly 0.5 points per game in his career and will probably end up in the top-two lines this season. Mathias Tjarnqvist is an old face in the Rogle organization. He represented them back in 2008-2009 where he scored 21 points (11+10) in 40 games. Just as Barta, he is not a frequent scorer but is perhaps more versatile in his game. He can be used both on the powerplay and on the penalty kill. The same goes for Fredrik Warg, another all-round forward with some offensive capabilities which usually wins a lots of faceoffs and will be another important piece on the penalty kill. But who is expected to carry the major part of the offensive production? Mike Iggulden is a strong contender for that title. Capable to about 30-40 points per season he should be on top when the season is over. But let’s not forget the other players who was on the team last season.

Ted Brithén and Viktor Lindgren were both productive last season. 22-year old Brithén couldn’t match his career-best 36 points from the 2011-2012 season but wasn’t far away, getting 33 points (16+17) in 42 games. 27-year old Lindgren had his best season in his career, adding 39 points (16+23) in 52 games. While they’re not expected to match those numbers in the SEL, they do have the capability to do so. Add players like last year’s playoff hero Christopher Liljewall and Jakob Johansson (30 points in 44 games last season) and we have a decent collection of players who can score.

But it feels like something is still missing and that is that one star who singlehandedly can steal a game. Almost everyone on the team has the capability to do so but just not at a regular basis. And when they will face important games(trust me, they will) they are most likely to come out on the losing end.

Coaching staff

From left: Dan Tangnes and Kenny Jonsson

Dan Tangnes has a long history with Rogle. He played in the J20 junior team and also for two season with them when they were down in the third-tier division back in 1997-1999.
After five seasons playing Gislaveds SK, Lillehammer and Jonstorps IF, he retired after the 2004-2005 season and went back to Rogle in 2009 to coach the team’s U16 squad. He then coached to J20 team for two season before he replaced Bjorn Hellkvist in middle of last season due to illness. He then successfully carried the team back to the SEL and now has the toughest job in his career in front of him. But he is in good company.

Beside him as an assistant coach we have long-time NHL:er Kenny Jonsson. Also having a long history with Rogle, he is a well merited player with two Olympic gold medals (1994 and 2006), one world championship gold medal (2006) and two bronze medals (1994 and 2009) he is a natural and respected leader who everyone listens to.

The two will have to work very hard to get their players to perform beyond their limits.
That is vital if Rogle wants to be playing in the SEL next year. If they ride on the confidence wave from last season they might pull it off but the duo might be too inexperienced not to panic if thing’s starts going south.

Three key players

Martin Gerber

He was a big part of Vaxjo’s success last season. Now he’s expected to do the same in Rogle. And there is no doubt he will be tested on a nightly basis. If Fransson can’t give him some relief then the pressure is going to be even more on the goaltender. Even though he can handle a large workload, starting 55 games in a row and playing well in possible post-season games is just too much to ask.

Jakob Johansson

The 34 year old forward has with the exception of two seasons with Brynas IF been with Rogle all his career and has the grabbed the record for most games (657) and most assists (277). Obviously, his loyalty to the team has made him very popular with the team and the fans and was named team captain before the 2011-2012 season. Now back in the SEL as the leader of the team he needs to be on the top of his mental game all season. He needs to be that rock for the rest of the team to lean if thing’s turns south.

Lasse Kukkonen

Brought in to strengthen Rogle’s defense Kukkonen’s well-known leadership skills is also going to be put to use. The former Karpat captain and now assistant captain of the Finnish national team is not known for racking up points but more to put down the opponents offense he will probably be one of the players with most ice-time this season. His experience is also going to be invaluable for a team that sports a lot of young and inexperienced players, at least on this level.

Summary

It’s not very hard to guess that Rogle will have to fight for their existence in the league right from the start. As a new team with a lot of players who has little or no SEL experience you simply cannot expect them to be at the top of the standings once the season ends.

But looking back at the last ten seasons of teams qualifying for the SEL eight teams has reached the playoffs, seven teams reached place 9-10, two teams went back to the promotion tournament and managed to qualify for next year and four teams went back to the promotion
tournament and was demoted. The chance is in order words pretty big to avoid demotion in the first season. But out of the two seasons Rogle was in the SEL during the 00’s they had to play in the promotion tournament both times with the second visit resulting in demotion for the team.

But if the coaching staff and the rest of the players from last year manages to bring the positive spirit to this season then they might just make it all the way to the playoffs.
But that will require that they play exceptional hockey all season. They might be able to upset a few teams but the roster is just too thin for them to hold out in the long run. Don’t be surprised if they head back to Hockeyallsvenskan next season.

[/dohtml] |

He is going to play, no worries! I'd figure I'll give them a 60-40 workload but if Fransson isn't sharp from the beginning then it's going to be more like 70-30. But hopefully both Gerber and Fransson will hold their own in this season. |

This will be huge season report. Looking forward for this. Elitserien is quite tough for updates, seems next year will be again changes. Timra and Rogle will probably fall down, and will be replace by Orebro and Leksand. |

Thanks man! I'll try to keep the same quality throughout the season. You will see detailed game reports at least and if I have the time I will do some other stuff as well.

Pre-season schedule released After a bit of delay, here is the schedule for the upcoming pre-season games: August 14th @ Brynas IF August 17th Linkopings HC August 26th @ HC TPS August 29th @ HIFK August 31th @ SAIPA September 8th Vaxjo Lakers HC Comments: The team will start out tough, with an away game this thursday against the SEL champions Brynas. Their first home game will be against last year's tenth-seed Linkopings HC, who managed to avoid the promotion tournament with a three-goal margin. The team will then head to Finland for a week-long training camp with a four-team tournament scheduled against HC TPS, HIFK and SAIPA. They will head back to Sweden on September 1st and will have their last pre-season game on September 8th against Vaxjo, a game that surely will be interesting for Mike Iggulden and Martin Gerber, who played there last season. Only a short report with a picture or two along with game stats will be posted from every game to save some time. More thoroughly reports will be posted once the regular season starts. Stay tuned! |

Tandem goaltending works quite effectively, when you have two good goalies. This is almost similar to Luongo and Schneider situation. |

Yes, hopefully I will pull off a tandem since I intend to keep both goaltenders as fresh as possible. The thing with Fransson is that he has never performed well the SEL and I can just hope it doesn't rub off on NHL 04. He did this great save a couple of years ago: [dohtml] [/dohtml] |

Good luck, it's going to be a challenge for sure. But i guess you'll survive it. And if this is even half as good as your last reports have been, that doesn't even matter
