Retired season reporter Posts: 1,087 Group: Members Member #51 Joined: April 6, 2011	Yes, I'm amazed myself. I was lucky though against the finnish teams. Two out of three games were just one-goal wins. I still think this is going to be a tough season.

But a shout out to those who follow this thread: I have a lot of in real life stuff going on right now (final exams, pre-season training starting etc.) so it will be updated inconsistently until mid-June. Then I'm back to normal phase again. Just wanted to give you guys a heads up.

But after watching the team play for nearly a month, i might have been a little to harsh.<br /> <br /> The ever so pessimistic side of me almost enjoyed itself when I saw the team in the first two games. It wasn't distastrous but I felt that they were indeed a team that just had played in Hockeyallsvenskan. But the first positive thing that struck me was that the young defensemen they matched then isn't as far from a regular spot on the team as I first thought. <strong>Anton Cederholm, Victor Panelin-Borg </strong>and <strong>Niklas Hansson</strong> did a decent job the two games they played and it must feel comforting for Rögle's management to have some depth to go with if one of their regular defensemen goes down with an injury. But other than that I was still pessimistic about the team. That changed, at least a bit, in Finland.<br /> <br /> When <strong>Tom Preissing</strong>, <strong>Lasse Kukkonen </strong>and <strong>Martin Strbak </strong>joined the team it felt like the team was swept with a comforting blanket. Okay, that sounded a bit quirky but that's the first thing that came in mind. But I think their experience had a calming effect on the team. Sure, the team allowed 37 shots in the following game but a confident <strong>Martin Gerber</strong> and an effective power play earned their first victory of the team a big confident boost. <br /> The special teams was once again effective in the 6-3 win, getting three power play goals and two shorthanded goals. <strong> Mike Iggulden </strong>made his season debut this game and had an assist and looked sharp although he wasn't the fastest on the ice. The last tournament game also resulted in a victory although it had to be settled in overtime. The last pre season game against Växjö was a great matchup with few penalties and much focus on skills. After being scoreless in the 3-2 win against SaiPa, I was glad to see Iggulden score two goals on his former team and being the big contributer to the win with<strong> Dennis Everberg</strong>, who scored the game-winner in overtime. <br /> <br /> So what's the verdict after this pre-season? The short answer: It looks better than I expected. But for those interested in why here is the long answer:<br /> <br /> Special teams was one part of the team I really was worried about. <br /> It just looked way too thin. But special teams has been their main reason for their pre season success. After allowing 2 goals on 6 attemps in the opening game against Brynäs IF, Rögle held their opponent scoreless on the following 15 attempts. In total, they killed 90,5% of their penalties and also scored two times. <br /> I think <strong>Dan Tangnes </strong>made an excellent choice on which players to use on the penalty kill. <strong>Dennis Everberg</strong> was perhaps the most exicting player to see.<br /> I'm really impressed by his energy on the ice and how well he put the opposing players out of balance. <br /> <br /> The power play wasn't too shabby either. On the 25 attempts they got they scored on 8 of them, giving them an effectiveness of 32%. <br /> The first power play-line was the most successful with a total of 13 points.<br /> <strong>Mathias Tjärnqvist </strong> had 5 points (2+3), <strong>Christopher Liljewall </strong> had 4 points (2+2) and <strong>Alexander Barta </strong>had 4 points (0+4). <br /> Tjärnqvist and Barta were two obvious choices to put into the power play but the addition of Liljewall was a bit of a gamble by coach Tangnes I think. But it payed off. Liljewall gave the line the "edge" they needed and if the success continues, they will provide with a lot of points for Rögle. <br /> <br /> Next reason was a part that I really wasn't too worried about; the goaltending.<br /> Both <strong> Martin Gerber </strong>and <strong>Jonas Fransson </strong>left a positive message to Rögle.<br /> Gerber landed on a 2-1 record with a 90,9% save percentage and a 2,59 GAA and Fransson landed on a 2-1 record with a 94,1% save percentage and a 1,61 GAA. While their numbers aren't the same, it still not settles who's number one as I rarely use these numbers as a final reference looking on goalie performance. Gerber's started with a bad outing but followed it up with two great ones while Fransson started with an excellent outing and followed up with a bad one, the 6-3 win to HIFK. Despite the win he wasn't the one who earn the credit for that one. He left a lot of bad rebounds and didn't look as sharp as he did against Linköping. But just as I was hoping for, he bounced back in his next game and battled hard to earn his second win. <br /> Now, if I should use this information to something, the prediction would be <br /> that Gerber's next game will be a bad outing for him and the next game for Fransson will be a good outing, since Gerber's outings in the pre season was BGG (Bad, Good, Good) and Fransson's was GBG (Bad, Good, Bad). <br /> But it hard to predict how they will perform based on just three games. <br /> Longer into the season I can start to predict how consistent they will be.<br /> One thing I do know is that Dan Tangnes will probably alternate between his goaltenders in the beginning before he decides which one's is the starter.<br /> And I think both will surely give their bid on that position.<br /> <br /> The last thing, but most important: the effort. I put a lot of emphasis on the team having to perform beyond their skills since that is the part they lack the most. As they don't have the same amount of talent as the rest of the teams in the SEL, they have to beat them by solely outworking them. Although I didn't see any of it in the first two games, the following four games were all about team-effort. The best game was perhaps the 6-3 win against HIFK. Along with the special teams they really put their heart and souls into winning and I've never seen that many blocked shots in a pre season game before. It is games like that gives me hope.<br /> <br /> But to sum it up, the season is 55 games of hard work. Can they keep up until the end?<br /> Not likely. I still have the same opinion that overall, the team is too thin. A consistent scorer in Hockeyallsvenskan, he recorded no points in three pre season games in 9 minutes average ice time per game. <br /> "I surprised that he came so unprepared to the training camp. I was expecting him to be a top-six forward this season so I'm a bit disappointed. But I know he's a competitor and I think he will not take this demotion negatively," Svensson said.<br /> Spelling was perhaps not a surprise getting sent to the J20 squad, but it was more on the fact that he's not mature enough rather than skill.<br /> "We have high hopes in Spelling, that's for sure. I like what I saw in the games he played. He provided a lot of energy and speed and I'm sure he will be a regular soon, if not this season then the next. <br /> Panelin-Borg, a regular since the 2010-2011 season got victimized when Tom Preissing, Lasse Kukkonen and Martin Strbak joined the team. But he is not disappointed by the demotion, at least not so much.<br /> "What can I say? It is stuff like these that happens when you're in a team. Sometimes guys come in that are better than you and all you can do is to work hard everyday and earn your spot on the roster. I told the guys before the third to try to make the clock just tick and just defend the lead. But I should have known better to use that tactic against a talented team as HV 71," Rögle coach <strong>Dan Tangnes </strong>said at the press conference after the game. <br /> <br /> "We got comfortable with the lead. I can say that without lying. The first one was badly executed as they failed to even get a shot on goal. The second looked better, with a few shots on goals but it still looked a bit nervous out there. HV 71 was the better team initially but their play got disrupted by their penalties. They got their fourth in a row when team captain <strong>Johan Davidsson </strong>got two minutes for hooking at 15:55. Here Rögle got very lucky as a shot from <strong>Lasse Kukkonen</strong> from the point bounced off <strong>Mike Iggulden's </strong>back and into the net. Iggulden skated to the bench with some agony but cracked a smile at least when he got there.<br /> <br /> <img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Iggulden_1_0_zps9ee6e944.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br /> <br /> Rögle got another goal with just two seconds to go of the period on another lucky bounce. <strong>Nils Bergström </strong>got the puck in his own zone and skated toward HV 71's zone. He fired a shot on goal and was heading to make a line shift. But surprisingly, the puck went in as it bounced off defenseman Mikko Louma and in an arch over <strong>Gustaf Wesslau</strong> and into the net. <br /> <br /> <img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Bergstrom_2_0_zps69eaed3f.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br /> <br /> With two goals ahead and leading the shots 17-10, it was a very confident Rögle that went into the dressing room before the second period.<br /></td> </tr> <tr> <td height="21" colspan="3" align="center"> </td> </tr> <tr> <td height="21" colspan="3" align="center"><strong>Second Period</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td height="21" colspan="3" align="center">HV 71 went out strong in the first five minutes, burying themselves inside Rögle's zone and <strong>Martin Gerber </strong>got tested with a few shots that he managed to control well. But Rögle got back into the game and neither of the teams had the momentum. Two goals would eventually get scored in the period. Rögle converted on another power play as <strong>Alexander Barta </strong>stole the puck from <strong>William Karlsson </strong>at center ice, skated into HV71's zone from the right, took a few strides into the center and blasted a shot top shelf over Wesslau's glove.<br /> It was their third and last shot of the period. <br /> <br /> <img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Barta_3_0_zpsd21ed988.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br /> <br /> HV 71 answered with just one second left of the period. <strong>David Petrasek </strong>dumped the puck into Rögle's zone and Johan Davidsson was first on the puck. He immediately passed the puck to <strong>Andreas Jämtin </strong>who fired a one-timer. Gerber would have made an easy save here, but the stick of<strong> Daniel Sondell </strong>got in the way and got past the goaltender, making it 3-1.<br /> <br /> <img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Jamtin_3_1_zps230efdc6.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br /> <br /> This was HV 71's period, but good goaltending and a solid defense from Rögle made sure they would hold on to their lead.<br /></td> </tr> <tr> <td height="21" colspan="3" align="center"><strong>Third Period</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td height="21" colspan="3" align="center">Rögle went out very defensively at first, and was like coach Dan Tangnes said, trying to make the clock just tick. But HV 71 fed from this and were pushing on to get a goal. Rögle's puck possesion must have been down to 20-30% because all they did when they got the puck was to skate into HV 71's zone, firing a shot on goal and then just going back to defending themselves. While it looked like it was a tactic that was going to work, a power play goal from <strong>Oscar Sundh</strong> made Rögle's bench nervous. And the whole team for that matter. <br /> <br /> <img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Sundh_3_2_zpsc3b4691f.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br /> <br /> A shot on goal was gloved by Gerber and he quickly set the puck into play by passing it to Alexander Barta. But Barta failed to see HV 71's Davidsson coming behind him. Davidsson checked him and he lost the puck just in front of the net. <strong>Rhett Rakhshani </strong>got to the puck first and with a backhand, he tied the game at 3. <br /> <br /> <img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Rakhshani_3_3_zps5661ccc7.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br /> <br /> Rögle tried their best to get the lead again, but HV 71 were stronger and faster and had the strongest bid to get the lead. But buzzer sounded before a deciding goal could be scored so the game went to overtime.</td> </tr> <tr> <td height="21" colspan="3" align="center"><strong>Overtime</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td height="21" colspan="3" align="center">Just five seconds in, Oscar Sundh got this third penalty of the game when he got a minor for hooking. If they might have been more aggressive on the offense maybe they would have worn out HV 71. But I think it will be something that will be in their mind next game to come. Every single seat and standing area were packed with spectators and when the intro started Rögle's home fans rolled out a huge banner with the text "We're back where we belong!". And those who had come to attend this game sure got an entertaining night of hockey with both teams giving it all. But sadly for Rögle's fans, it ended with a somber tone.<br /> <br /> <strong>Alexander Barta </strong> scored a hattrick, with two goals in the last five minutes of the third period to take the game to overtime and later on a shootout. But he, <strong>Christopher Liljewall </strong>and <strong>Nils Bergström </strong>all missed their chances while Per-Åge Skröder and Richie Regehr put their pucks behind <strong>Martin Gerber </strong>to get the win for MoDo. <br /> <br /> Despite the loss, assistant coach <strong>Kenny Jönsson </strong>wasn't too disappointed:<br /> "I think we took a step in the right direction. We worked hard all game and despite being two goals behind at the end, we didn't hang with out heads and just kept grinding until we got some goals. Rögle got an early power play but only got to play about thirty seconds of them when the referee found a tripping penalty on <strong>Jakob Johansson</strong>. While they managed to killed the penalty off they failed to score on the following power play when <strong>Dave Spina </strong>got a minor for hooking. But after that the referee settled a little bit, and the game could start for real. Rögle was up to phase with MoDo for sure, and looked to gain the momentum. At the 12 minute mark, <strong>Fredrik Warg </strong>almost got his first goal for the season as he managed to slip one by <strong>Berhard Starkbaum </strong>but the puck hit the post and out of harms way. But a few minutes later, Rögle would get go-ahead goal. <strong>Per-Åge Skröder </strong>was in the penalty box when <strong>Alexander Barta </strong>scored of a rebound on <strong>Mike Iggulden's </strong>shot. A minute later, <strong>Ludvig Byström </strong>got a minor for hooking, giving Rögle another chance on the power play. But they never got close as Starkbaum sealed the net and with only four seconds left of the penalty, Rögle's <strong>Lasse Kukkonen </strong>got a minor for hooking. The same Byström scored the tying goal just twenty-three seconds in when he snapped a wrister past Gerber, who had a clear sight of the puck but somehow let it in between his legs. When the sound horned for the first intermission it still felt like Rögle was the team who were going to be dominant in the next period. In the second half of the period, they were much faster on the skates, they were first on almost every puck and also won the shots 14-7. <br /></td> </tr> <tr> <td height="21" colspan="3" align="center"> </td> </tr> <tr> <td height="15" colspan="3" align="center"><strong>Second Period</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td height="107" colspan="3" align="center">MoDo was once again victimized with an early power play, as <strong>Marcel Müller</strong> got two for hooking. Müller and a few other players disputed with the referee about it and even myself could agree with them that he made a bad call. The frustration was understandable in order words. But Rögle was surprisingly weak on the power play and didn't create a single lethal scoring chance. But they were better on the penalty kill when <strong>Mathias Tjärnqvist </strong>was handed a minor six minutes in. MoDo only managed a single shot on goal, which was easily snagged by Gerber. Gerber however let another weak one past him at 12:50 when <strong>Joonas Lehtivuori </strong>fired a seemingly harmless shot on goal. Gerber opened up his block butterfly position and let it past underneath his right arm. But the goal somehow felt just for MoDo. They had been grinding all period and had succesfully pushed back Rögle to a more defensive game. <br /> But Rögle wasn't done yet although the first few minutes of the third didn't go their way.<br /></td> </tr> <tr> <td height="15" colspan="3" align="center"><strong>Third Period</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td height="118" colspan="3" align="center">MoDo continued with their aggressive play and carried the game. Six minutes in, <strong>Martin Strbak </strong>lost a scrum behind the net to <strong>Kristian Forsberg </strong>and he passed the puck to the point where<strong> Morten Madsen </strong>was all alone and fired a quick wrister near the right goal post to make it 3-1 for MoDo. But Rögle slowly worked their way back into the game again and in the last half of period, they were all over MoDo. And at 15:43, Alexander Barta got his second tally of the night when a shot from Lasse Kukkonen bounced off Mathias Tjärnqvist's skate and right on his blade. With Starkbaum out of position, he had a lot of net to shoot at and didn't make any mistakes here. <br /> Behind a goal and with just a minute left, Rögle decided to pull Gerber for an extra attacker and go for the tying goal. <br /> MoDo was so close to score, but a great defensive play by <strong>Tom Preissing </strong>created a turnover and Mike Iggulden fed the puck to Barta.<br /> Barta went into the zone from the right and with some MoDo players chasing him. But let's not forget Preissing himself. <br /> He was okay but nothing more in the games he played in the pre season but these two games he has been close to flawless. I'm really impressed by his work ethics and how he handles situations on the ice. If he gets his scoring touch back I'm sure that he will develope into one of the most important players in Rögle. The same goes out <strong>Dennis Everberg</strong>. He played 11:33 tonight and mostly while on the penalty kill and did an excellent job on every shift. He is just twenty and is already a skilled two-way player. <br /> <br /> To sum up the game in a short sentence it was close but no cigar again. I think they played a good game in general and dispite a few mistakes (Strbak's bad scrum behind the net and Gerber's wide-open blocker-side) it looks promising. By the time we got to the ten minute mark, Rögle had five shots on goal and Skellefteå only had one.<br /> But on just their second shot of period, the home team made it 2-0 after a face off in Rögle's zone. Oscar Lindberg won the face off and just threw it at the net. Fransson slided to the right to stop the puck but didn't see <strong>Bud Holloway </strong>and the goaltender basically left an open net for the forward. Fransson just shock his head after the goal. I did the same.<br /> <br /> <img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Holloway_0_2_zps8ef5165b.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br /> <br /> Barta got a minor for hooking at the sixteen minute mark but Skellefteå's<strong> Joakim Lindström </strong>made it a four on four when he tripped <strong>Mike Iggulden</strong>. Rögle didn't have enough time though to score on the power play after Barta's penalty ended and it was a frustrated team that would go into the dressing room for the second intermission.<br /></td> </tr> <tr> <td height="15" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#d1dceb"><strong>Third Period</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td height="118" colspan="3" align="center">Both teams picked up the phase in the beginning, and it was clear that both teams really wanted a goal. And eight minutes in, <strong>Daniel Zaar </strong>scored his first career SEL goal when Skellefteå defenseman Sundström tried to clear the puck out of this zone. But Zaar intercepted it and fired a quick shot on goal which startled Eriksson in net. <br /> <br /> <img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Zaar_1_2_zps15df05d4.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br /> <br /> Almost three minutes later, Alexander Barta made an amazing play as he once again skated past Skellefteå's defense and only had Eriksson to beat. But the time was running out and it seemed like it was another game going to overtime. But with just thirty-one seconds left, Skellefteå scored as <strong>Melker Karlsson</strong> got loose on the right side and fired a close-range shot on goal. Fransson left a bad rebound and left his five-hole open and Karlsson found that small opening and put it in the net. While they got a few easy goals we <br /> had to fight our asses off to get two. It should have been our win tonight," forward Mike Iggulden said.<br /> Rookie Daniel Zaar added:<br /> "I think they didn't deserve that win. But at the same time, it's like that sometimes. You fight hard, get your nose into the action and come out on the losing end anyways. It was a good team effort all out the game with a few individual mistakes. But it was those mistakes who hurt the team. While I hate to play the blame game whenever there's a loss, Jonas Fransson's shaky play tonight was a part of the team not getting the win. He gave up two juicy rebounds for SAIK to score on and his overall game was brutal. He struggled with containing the puck and just let the it hit him sometimes, creating several rebounds. But this isn't how he plays usually and this was just one game. The slovakian netminder was alert however, and denied Rögle the go-ahead goal. But right before the end of the first period, Frölunda's <strong>Viktor Svedberg</strong> got a minor for hooking. Kukkonen just a piece of his stick on the puck but it was enough for it to elevate up in the top of the net behind Hudacek. <br /> <br /> <img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Kukkonen_1_0_zpsbf9979e1.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br /> <br /> Rögle went on the penalty kill less than a minute when <strong>Tobias Törnqvist </strong>headed to penalty box for obstruction hooking. But the penalty kill was handled exceptional by Rögle and Frölunda never got so close that they could score. But for the remainder of the period, it was almost all about Frölunda. Rögle got a few chances here and there but not any dangerous one's. Frölunda's <strong>Magnus Kahnberg </strong>hit the post just before the twelve-minute mark and just a few moments later <strong>Dick Axelsson </strong>fired his only shot on goal this game from the point but Fransson flashed the leather and denied him of the goal. 1-0 was the score when the teams headed for the dressing room. <br /> The shots ended pretty even, 11-13 in favor of Frölunda and they were also the team that for the moment looked the strongest.</td> </tr> <tr> <td height="15" colspan="3" align="center" bgcolor="#d1dceb"><strong>Third Period</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td height="249" colspan="3" align="center">Frölunda had a penalty on <strong>Gustav Rydahl </strong> from the second period to kill off at the start of the third. They managed do so but was still under pressure from Rögle. Mike Iggulden tried to feed <strong>Jakob Johansson </strong>with a pass in the slot but Johansson got too close to the puck and it bounced of his skate and into the right corner. Johansson got to it first, turned around and went in front of the net and with a quick wrister he scored his first goal of the season, making it to 2-0 Rögle. <br /> <br /> <img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Johansson_1_1_zpsb73dd136.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br /> <br /> Frölunda kept their phase from the second period however and for a couple of minutes showed that they indeed are one of the most talented teams in the league. But they had a hard time solving Rögle's defense and most of all, goaltender Jonas Fransson. <br /> He kept the game at 2-0 with several difficult saves but most of all, his rebound control was excellent. But he would lose his bid at a shutout with less than four minutes left of the game. Kahnberg headed into the zone between the face off circles and passed the puck to <strong>Mikael Johansson </strong>who was completely alone with Fransson. But from nowhere <strong>Tom Preissing </strong>came and tried to poke the puck away only to find himself in the line of fire when Johansson shot the puck. It hit his skate blade and startled Fransson in net and it went just beside his glove. <br /> <br /> <img src="http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr163/punxatawney/Johansson_2_1_zpsb209778d.jpg" width="800" height="640" /><br /> <br /> This goal really fueled Frölunda, who went all in to get the equalizer. They managed to push Rögle down into their defensive zone and held them there and there was little space to change. The 3rd line got the worst of it, staying on the ice for nearly two minutes under heavy pressure. I mean, he had a tough time but just brushed it off and went out and got the win for us. I feel a little bad though for ruining his shutout," Tom Preissing said and chuckled.<br /> Forward <strong>Mathias <jrän> Tjärnqvist</strong>:<br /> "His glove save on that guy(Axelsson) was so sick. I stood up from the bench and cheered along with our fans when that happened. The victory tonight was all on him."<br /> <br /> Fransson himself was, as most athletes often are, modest after the game:<br /> "I felt great tonight and was more focused than last time. But the defense deserves a lot of credit. They made my saves easy to make and I did have to battle for the puck so much. I hope we can play like this every night."<br /> <br /> I was relieved to see him bounce back tonight. I got a feeling that Rögle needs two strong goalies this season. I know <strong>Martin Gerber </strong>is a great goalie but he's coming of age and playing 50+ games in the regular season are perhaps a bit too much. While it's still early in the season, the prediction for Fransson is that he is heading for the backup-duty. But he showed tonight that he has the potential still of becoming a starter. If he manages to outplay Gerber I think it's not going to take long time before the latter one leavs the team.<br /> </p></td> </tr> <tr> <td height="15" colspan="3" align="center"
