IIHF WC Division 1A

Posted Image
Two years ago the Italian team had a positive experience in Budapest beating the home nation in OT. Can they do it again?

After a bit (okay, more than a bit :D ) time without NHL 2004 I decided to come back with something special and play the IIHF WC Division 1A 2013 in Budapest, Hungary. This tournament might seem be a big strange for fans of the top-hockey countries, but this is actually just one level under the "normal" IHWC. I added Ukraine and Poland from Division 1B to be able to play with 8 teams. Of course I will play with Team Italy.
The format is pretty simple, one game against each opponent, the 2 teams with the most points earn promotion.

Following nations will fight for two spots in the Top Division (world ranking in brackets)

  • Italy (16.)
  • Kazakhstan (17.)
  • Hungary (19.)
  • Great Britain (21.)
  • Japan (22.)
  • South Korea (28.)
  • Ukraine (27.) (Div 1B)
  • Poland (23.) (Div 1B)

Italy, Kazakhstan and Hungary are definitely the favorites for the promotion, but with the new format no team can be underestimated. Playing in front of 10.000 home fans can also be a big advantage for the Hungarian team. The British and Japanese team is never easy to play against. South Korea has a growing hockey program and wants to hold the division at any cost. Even though Ukraine and Poland did not have great results in the last few years, they will definitely try everything to spoil the party.

Team Italy made a needed change after last year's WC replacing head coach Rick Cornacchia with Tom Pokel. The spirit of new coach of the Azzurri, who's also the coach of HC Alleghe, was already shown at the Olympic qualifications. Despite finishing 3rd Italy surprised against the stronger expected opponents. After a unlucky loss to Austria the Blue Team was able to beat Germany and finished the tournament with an easy win over the Netherlands . Especially the new aggressive style of play was definitely an aspect many loved on the new game style, but in Bissingen Italy was not expected to perform, how will Pokel set the team when only winning counts?

Team roster analysis will follow when the final rosters are released....

Lithuania plays Division 1B, that's one level under Division 1A, I only picked the top 2 seeded nations of Division 1B (Ukraine and Poland) to have 8 teams. Just look here

But if somebody knows something specific (like fastest skater, who are the snipers etc.) about a team just let me know so I can do the roster a bit more realistic, because Italy is the only team I really know.

Hungarian and Kazakhstan squad you can grab from V3 - Kazakhstan was on last WC and has many players from KHL, Hungary has many players from Alba Volan from EBEL.

Really dont know anything about Korea and Japan, even British hockey. From Poland I know only Marcin Kolusz, I think he was a captain.

Its quite strange that Poland and Ukraine are beyond Korea or Japan, especially Ukraine, several years back, they were regular member on World championships.

@Oclear
I think Ukraine used their experienced players for too much time and never tried to give the chance to some young guns. Japan has always had a solid group for Division 1, were never able to earn promotion, but definitely belong to this level while South Korea has grown in the last few years (will definitely also get some financial help because of the 2018 olympics).
For Poland I sent a mail to a Polish user here (at least he made an addon with the Polish league), maybe I can get some information from him B)

BTW, no British users here?

Speaking of Polish players... I loved Polish enforcer Oliwa's stint with the Devils. He was mean in the first 2 years in the NHL... then he declined pretty badly for whatever reason.

The Grim Reaper was just too much for him though.

TEAM ITALY PREVIEW

Roster:
G: Adam Dennis (Dornbirn-AUT), Thomas Tragust (Innsbruck Haie-AUT), Andreas Bernard (Saipa-FIN)
D: Alexander Egger, Christian Borgatello, Andrea Ambrosi (HC Bozen), Armin Helfer, Armin Hofer (Val Pusteria), Dan Sullivan, Stefano Marchetti (Asiago), Trevor Johnson (Valpellice)
O: Anton Bernard, Marcon Insam, Markus Gander (HC Bozen), Rob Sirianni, Nate Di Casmirro (Valpellice), Giulio Scandella, Pat Iannone (Val Pusteria), Dave Borrelli (Asiago), Nicola Fontanive; Vince Rocco (Alleghe), Luca Felicetti (Cortina), Diego Kostner (Lugano-SUI)

GOALTENDING
Posted Image
Even though Daniel Bellissimo (Elitserien) is not avaible because of an injury goaltending should still be a strong point of this team.
Canadian-born netminder Adam Dennis, who will play for Dornbirn (EBEL) next season, is known as a strong and athletic goaltender. In his first official game for Team Italy the 28-year-old played a strong game against Germany helping the team to a surprising 2:1-win.
The future in net definitely belongs to 22-year old Andreas Bernard. The young Italian has earned himself a SM-Liiga contract with Saipa this season, leading the Mestis (2nd Finnish league) in GAA and SV%.
Thomas Tragust will likely get no ice team this year, but in case he is definitely a very reliable goaltender. He did not have the greatest season with Innsbruck (EBEL) in the past season, but what he did for the national team especially in 2006 und 2009 can be considered heroic.

OFFENSIVE LINES
Gander - Bernard - Insam
The "89-Bolzano-line" consists three young talented players, who showed great chemistry this season and had a big impact on Bolzano's qualification to the Continental Cup's Final Four. Even though they are the starting line for Italy Pokel has given this line a defensive role., but they can definitely also contribute offensively. Gander and Insam are great phyiscal players, while Bernard is also known as a good goalscorer.

Scandella - Di Casmirro - Sirianni
This is definitely the most offensive line of the "Blue Team". All three are known as fast forwards, who know how to score. Di Casmirro and Sirianni have been huge pieces of Valpellice`s success this season while Giulio Scandella, the hero of last year's win against Denmark, played in the Swedish Alvenskan.

Fontanive - Kostner - Iannone
This can maybe be considered the most complete line of this team. Nicola Fontanive is a hard-working player, always sacrificing for his team. On the other wing there is a pure sniper with Pat Iannone. To centre both is 20 year-old Diego Kostner, who has established himself as a great two-way-forward for Lugano in the Swiss NLA-league.

Felicetti - Rocco - Borrelli
This line can definitely also contribute a lot. 31 year old Luca Felicetti may only be tall 165 cm, but he is one of those players who just are not afraid of going into the corners while still being a great playmaker. Vince Rocco, 25 years old, will play his 2nd WC while Asiago-captain David Borrelli will give his debut for the "Azzurri"

Scandella's OT-goal against Denmark was not enough for Italy to stay in the Top Division

DEFENSIVE PAIRS
Borgatello - Egger "C"
Alexander Egger was given the "C" at this years olympic qualication. He always leads by example and hard work. Christian Borgatello is another Bolzano-defenceman and also knows the crazy Hungarian fans as he used to played for Alba Volan . This two might be the strongest italian defencemen. Egger can be used as a center too.

Sullivan - Johnson
Johnson is more like a offensive defenceman who can also bring some valuable experience while for 26-year-old Sullivan, who is overall more defensive minded, this will be his first WC.

Hofer - Helfer
Helfer surely has a smile on his face when asked about Budapest: Two years ago he was the one who scored the decisive goal in OT. Hofer is maybe not the player you notice first, but he is a reliable D-man. They have also shown good chemistry this season playing for their home club Brunico.

Ambrosi - Marchetti
Ambrosi and Marchetti are both stay-at-home defenders. Both have established themself as solid defencemen in the Serie A. Ambrosi has definitely also learned something from star-defenceman Niklas Hjalmarsson during the lockout.
