CALDER CUP FINALS PREVIEW

It's deja vu in the 2014 Calder Cup Finals, as the Norfolk Admirals and Toronto Marlies square off for 'round two'. Both teams are making their second trip to the finals in the last three seasons, having met for the 2012 Calder Cup as well.

Those 2012 finals were a decidedly one-sided affair, as the Admirals swept the Marlies 4-0 to cap off one of the all-time greatest single seasons by a professional hockey team. The Admirals set a pro hockey record with 28 consecutive wins to close out the regular season, then went 15-3 in the playoffs en route to their first Calder Cup.

The Admirals return to the finals after another strong season, finishing second-best during the regular season, behind only the Albany Devils, whom they dispatched in five games in the conference final. The Devils took the first game at home, but the Admirals rallied to even the series in Game 2, then came home and took all three in Norfolk to clinch the series.

Remarkably, the Admirals have reached the finals twice in three years...with a different affiliate each time. The 2012 cup was won with Tampa Bay's AHL'ers, who are now located in Syracuse. The Admirals are now in their second year as Anaheim's top farm team.

The Marlies, meanwhile, enter the finals still riding a miracle run that got them into the playoffs and has carried them through all three rounds with ease. The seventh-seeded Marlies have held a 3-0 stranglehold in each one of their series' so far.

Past Playoff Meetings: 2012 - Norfolk wins 4-0

The NHL 04 playoffs shed another victim. :(
It's amazing really how few of the season reports last until the final, yet a final win.
Too bad we didn't get to see this one go all the way.
Enjoyed this report very much and I hope you'll return for a sequel.

MARLIES WIN CALDER CUP!

The Toronto Marlies completed their cinderella story with the franchise's first Calder Cup, avenging their 2012 loss to the Admirals with a 4-1 series victory. The Marlies again staked out a 3-0 lead, just as they had in each previous round, and ended up winning the cup on home ice in Game 5.

Although the drought continues for the Maple Leafs, the city of Toronto finally gets to celebrate a hockey championship, and the 8,000 fans who packed the tiny Ricoh Coliseum surely will be celebrating this one long into the night.

The Marlies went an incredible 15-4 in their playoff run, amassing only one more loss that the history-making Admirals team from 2012. The Calder Cup now heads to Canada for the first time since the 2006-07 Hamilton Bulldogs.

Just like in the NHL, each Marlies player will have a day with the Calder Cup this summer. Fans will have their victory parade and surely countless other public appearances where they can hoist the trophy themselves.

Alas, only one team gets to celebrate. For the players, staff, and fans of the other 29 teams, one phrase will be head over and over until the puck drops again in October:

"We'll get 'em next year."

As I've said before, in NHL 2004 it's the Journey, not the destination.

This was a great season report. And that's all that counts.
