Hockey is back!

The Finnish Hockey Championship is renewed completely beginning with the new simplified name "Liiga". The biggest news came in earlier this summer when HIFK's local rival Jokerit announced that they aren't going to participate next Liiga season but join the Kontinental Hockey League. Other teams were not very delighted about the news because Jokerit is a huge team and is a big part in financial side of the corporation.

HIFK - Are the legion of aliens capable of winning the title?

HIFK have gone through a dramatic transformation. Many players have left the team but all of them have got a replacement. IFK's weak center department have been strengthen with the names like Matti Kuparinen and Rico Fata.
Joni Ortio made an impression to IFK's crowd last season and molt many fans heart. Now Ortio has left to Calgary looking for an NHL spot and he is replaced with a Canadian goalkeeper Brad Thiessen. Our new goalie feels the pressure in the capital city of Finland and every night will be under the huge magnifying glass.

Captains for 2013-2014 season

Captain: Ville Peltonen
Alternate Captain: Matti Kuparinen
Alternate Captain: Toni Söderholm

Preseason matches

Linköping HC - HIFK 1-0

Brad Thiessen 31/32 saves

HIFK - ERC Ingolstadt 1-2

Posted Image

Corey Elkins 1+0
Tony Salmelainen 0+1
Janos Hari 0+1

Antti Ore 21/23 saves

HIFK struggled alot in five-on-five situations. The team took over 25 minutes of minor penalties in two games and failed to score on powerplays there was given. In goalies comparison Thiessen played a bit more solidly than his colleague Antti Ore. The match against Linköping was played with number one squad and Thiessen didn't have a chance to save his only allowed goal. Ore played well along with scratched players but slipped too goals. The lack of finishing wasn't good news for coaching team as they have fulfilled their weaknesses from last season. Juuso Puustinen wasn't even in power play line which got people a bit anxious.

We will hope that offseason matches won't be the team we are going to follow this season. Videos are again with the reports but now in montage typed so there won't be a video with each match because making those videos takes time.

Teuvo Teräväinen scores a game winning goal against Brad Thiessen

Jokerit and HIFK took on the league match of the season and also starting the battle between two teams from Helsinki. HIFK was very close to win having a two goal lead in the beginning of second period with goals by Eero Somervuori, Tony Salmelainen and Rico Fata but Jokerit answered with three goals and took the lead. HIFK almost lost the control with Fata's second penalty of the night but Matti Kuparinen's rough entrance and skillful backhand shot tied the game five seconds before the buzzer. The overtime lasted a bit over a minute until Jani Rita passed to Chicago Blackhawks's number one pick from 2012 which Brad Thiessen had nothing to do.

HPK wins in shootout

HIFK didn't manage to get their first win of the season when HPK won in shootout. IFK's key player Brad Thiessen kept the team close to HPK but he had to surrender once in regular time when Aleksi Laakso managed to score on powerplay. Even though IFK took eight two minute minors and played on powerplay for 12 minutes, the results were not very satisfying as the lack of finishing came back from preseason. Only Eero Somervuori had a time to celebrate his tying goal in 39:58 from a breakaway which was an easy job for this sniper who scored his second goal of the season.

IFK dominates - SaiPa steals the win

Brad Thiessen was off the shape tonight

IFK's losing streak continued in Helsinki when the visitor team SaiPa upperhanded the red shirts 3-2. IFK dominated throughout the game but still the teams weaknesses were around. SaiPa's first shot on goal by Janne Tavi ended up surprising Brad Thiessen. IFK straightened up on their fifth powerplay when Mikko Kurvinen scored from Eero Somervuori pass from the corner. IFK took the lead in third period with Ville Peltonen's deflection from Mikko Jokela's blue line shot. Only a minute later Jaakko Rissanen brought SaiPa back to game and with Stefano Giliati's powerplay goal IFK was a goner. Three games, two points.

Well sure but I don't really know if he's really that capable when we are trying to get our first win. But that doesn't mean I haven't thought about it putting him to the line-up. :D

Coaching mistake ruins IFK's night

Posted Image

IFK is crawling in the deep. Tonight's performance against Ässät was average and only Juuso Puustinen's 1+2 and Tony Salmelainen's beautiful 1-1 powerplay goal stood up from the blurry performance. The last minute stumble on keeping six players on ice after Puustinen's game tying goal 15 seconds before the end just sealed the current IFK's status: mess. Antti Ore made a decent night but lack of defending and couple of own mistakes the night went out just how it did. Right now the only way is up but it needs a lot of hard work. For the next match both Ville Peltonen and Brad Thiessen are out so Ore will continue in net.

Own goal keeps the losing streak going

The whole fan base of IFK have questioned their team's recent performances. The team should be good in paper but yet another loss was faced tonight in Rauma where Lukko took the victory in overtime with Mikko Jokela's own goal. Antti Ore was guarding the net for second time this season and the first goal was his own mistake when the puck slipped between the pads at the start of the second period. Lukko scored another goal five minutes later by Teemu Nurmi. IFK managed to make a comeback in second period with Jokela's and Austin Block's second goal of the season. But once again the overtime was too much for IFK. Next match against Blues is a must score or otherwise team is going to face serious changes.
