IFK takes the opening win

Trevor Gillies, Mikko Jokela and Brad Thiessen. Those guys were the topics in today's press when IFK won their rival Blues 2-0. Gillies was one of the questioned players that IFK bought in this summer and tonight he got even more questioned: zero shots, zero tackles and only four minutes on ice. Still a game misconduct for winning a fight against Jani Honkanen and a fired up crowd because of it. 10 seconds after the fight Iiro Pakarinen scores the game winning goal for IFK. In third period IFK sealed the deal with Rico Fata's good work in front of the net on powerplay. Thiessen's 23 saves included also a shutout and a penalty shot. IFK's head coach didn't give a lot of comments about Gillies's action but postgame interview he told that the fight was "something from the past between these two."

Well done!

Now post all the headlines from the Finnish "yellow press" about Gillies' brutal performance. Save the children, ban fighting, etc. :D

IFK continues the winning streak

IFK continued their strong performing in Jyväskylä where the home team JYP lost to our Red Shirts 3-1. IFK had their win offered on the silver plate as JYP took eight two minute minors. It took over 35 minutes to score the first goal of the game when IFK's key players Rico Fata and Ville Peltonen built an easy job for Toni Söderholm to score from the back poast. Mikko Jokela's point got extended in third period as he put the rebound in from Tony Salmelainen's nasty wrist shot from b-point. The final empty netter was just cosmetics and the next game against Ilves will be well waited.

Elkins scores a hat trick

Ilves and IFK gave a match that will be in their fans hearts for the rest of the season. The game included everything: Comebacks after comebacks, clean and skilled hockey and an overtime. Ilves managed to take already a 3-0 lead but IFK tied the game and took the 4-3 lead but Ilves never gave up the points away so the overtime began 5-5 with IFK's powerplay and tonight's biggest character Corey Elkins with three goals and an assist didn't miss the loose puck from Eero Somervuori's shot. The rest of the season will be looking for a same type of thriller.

IFK loses in overtime - Kurvinen injured

Jokerit was once again victorious against IFK when the final buzzer stopped the clocks in 64:37. The match itself included a lot of hits, mental games and great goaltending. Both teams had their backup goalies in the net but Joonas Korpisalo did slightly better job than Antti Ore with 34 saves. Mikko Jokela has become the leader in scoring department with 4+3 which quite worrying as he's a defender. Also IFK faced dramatic news when Jarkko Ruutu's open ice hit took Mikko Kurvinen out cold. Kurvinen laid on ice respondless and it's just a matter of question how long will he be away from IFK's line-up.

Announcement - Kurvinen

October 7th - Mikko Kurvinen has been diagnosed with mild concussion and will not be able to play in the line-up for five weeks. Kurvinen had his injury yesterday in the Helsinki's derby against Jokerit in third period when Jarkko Ruutu landed and open ice hit which led Kurvinen hitting his head severely.

Defence leaked - Voutilainen scored a hat trick

IFK's difficulties continued tonight in home ice when KalPa let IFK lip their finger tips. Sloppy defence cost last two goals and as a result Brad Thiessen had to give up five times. KalPa had the stanglehold throughout the game but IFK managed to score three times. The last 10 games haven't been what this team should've accomplished. The reconstrution may start sooner than expected.
