I had the same problem; you need to update your arenas. Go to the sticky in the Mod Download area and you'll find the arena add-on. If you have a weaker computer then get arena-lite (but you'll need to change the file name from arena-lite.viv to arena.viv if you do that). Install in the necessary areas the arena, crowd, and ice files; I believe there is a readme, so it shouldn't be all that hard. Hope that solves your problem. |

Hi everyone, my game is randomly crashing when I am playing. It only happens near the end of a period, but it does it every game. It becomes unresponsive and I cannot exit the game and I need to open the task manager. I am running it on windows 10. The first 2 games I played were done without any problems but now I can't finish a match. |

@Wear174: Did you wait about 5 minutes with a white screen and it still stays? @Gongshow16: I would say that your problem is the case 9 from the first post.
@johnnyblaaze: You should try a new launcher. The version 1.5 could solve the problem. It's in the beta testing but you can always install the old interface back if it won't solve the problem. Launcher 1.5 Beta thread |

Can't get game to work. Win 10 Pro 64, 4790k, 32 GB RAM , GTX 970 G1 with latest nvidia drivers Followed instructions at http://z15.invisionfree.com/NHL04Rebuilt/i...php?showtopic=1 Disabled Avast Antivirus until reboot. Windows Defender is off. Ran DTLite and put each CD into a disk drive. Ran Autoplay.exe. Created folder in C:\ named 'NHL 2004' English Custom Full C:\NHL 2004\ Copied interface.exe into same folder and ran as admin, extracted to C:\NHL 2004\ (overwrite all) Opened cmd as admin in that folder and ran > regsvr32 BrowserEngine_pc_z.dll and > regsvr32 becontrols_pc_z.dll Created C:\Users\bishopstars\Documents\NHL 2004\db Copied three files with .exh in the names from Flyermania rosters to that folder. Copied db.viv and tuning.viv to C:\NHL 2004\db (overwrite) Copied arena gamedata to C:\NHL 2004 (overwrite), arena-lite, face2004, ugi, jersey, masks, Menufaces, pbp, and required, overwriting when prompted. Opened properties for nhl2004.exe and Run in compatibility mode for XP SP3 and Run as administrator (apply). Added antivirus exclusions for C:\NHL 2004\, Launcher.exe, Project1.exe, Project2.exe, nhl2004.exe, and C:\Users\bishopstars\Documents\NHL 2004\ and again made sure that my antivirus was disabled. Ran it, using 1920x1080 60Hz, FOV 12, no anti-aliasing, point filtering, and unticked both boxes next to VSync. Clicked Launch. Saw a partial window in the top left corner of the screen, then nothing. Edited Launcher.ini to add Windowed = 1 below the last line. Ran the launcher as admin. Got an all white window in the middle of my lower desktop, which didn't do anything after 5 minutes until I forced it closed in task manager. Ran NHL 2004 as admin, and got varying results that all crashed before getting to an intro or menu. Tried a virtualbox install of windows 7 32 bit, but got a 3D driver error message when trying to run nhl2004.exe. The game without the launcher worked occasionally until a few days ago, when I got near the end of the first dynasty season, and after every game it would crash with a popup window asking if i wanted to allow scripts to continue and a message about fighting being new in NHL 2004 in the game. I tried fixing it, but now it is broken and no amount of reinstalling or trouble-shooting has fixed it for me. Tried the beta launcher 1.5, but no luck. Tried changing registry settings, deleting all 'nhl 2004' registry entries and reinstalling, registering every possible dll file, changing every folder and file out of 'read only', running every exe in varying combinations of admin and xp sp3, win 7, or native compatibility mode. Copied secdrv.sys to System, System32, and SysWOW64 in C:\Windows. Tried enabling IE11 in Win 10 and deleting personal settings. Tried downloading macromedia flash player and installing it. Here are some error messages: Faulting application path: C:\NHL2004\nhl2004.exe Exception code: 0xc0000005 Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll (many times) Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\DINPUT.dll Faulting module path: C:\NHL2004\Launcher\Launcher.dll Faulting module path: C:\Windows\AppPatch\AcLayers.dll Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\combase.dll Faulting module path: C:\NHL2004\nhl2004.exe The SecDrv service failed to start due to the following error: This driver has been blocked from loading Thoughts? Suggestions? |

Wow! A long list.First of all, you should always use launcher and now we have to think about why it's not working. Did you start the launcher with xp compatibility mode? I noticed that you tried it with the game exe.
You should also disable the intro video. Put this line to launcher.ini (if you use the launcher 1.45), laucher 1.5 has the option tab.
You can also set the launcher log on. Launcher 1.5 has the tab and with launcher 1.45, you have to put the next line to a launcher.ini

Thanks for the suggestions, Sence. I wiped everything and tried it clean again, with the same results. I tried changing both launcher and nhl2004 properties to XP SP3 and run as admin, and tried double clicking, right click - run as admin, right click - run, and every combination of turning all those settings on and off. Usually it will give me a box in the top left of the screen for a second then disappear. Sometimes it will flash a rectangle before it disappears. Sometimes it will give me a big white rectangle that doesn't go away, and there will be a taskbar button that says "NHL® 2004". The best is when it's a proper window with close, max, min buttons in the top right, and blank white inside the window. This window can be moved, but still does nothing else (not even close). Event viewer errors when I tried it clean again include: Faulting application path: C:\NHL 2004\NHL2004.exe Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\DINPUT.dll Faulting module path: C:\Windows\AppPatch\AcLayers.DLL Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll I did try running with the log on in 1.5, but didn't get anything useful out of it. |

The launcher log could be useful for Vod (The launcher guy) and he might get some ideas what is the problem. ![]() @Vod: What do you think? Suggestions? |

I noticed you said "lower desktop". How many displays do you have? You can try adding Adapter=x to launcher .ini. Set 'x' to the display number. I also notice you got an error message about securedrv. That shouldn't be an issue if you're using the crack in the rebuilt interface. Another thing to check is make sure you have DirectInput enabled in Control Panel -> Programs and features -> Turn windows features on or off -> Legacy Components -> DirectPlay. If none of that works, an opcode offset from windows event log would be helpful. I can check the machine code and it might help narrow it down. NHL 04 uses a lot of deprecated libraries that are barely supported these days. DirectX 8, SecureRom (without crack), DirectInput, DirectSound, Legacy JS, DirectPlay. If any of these aren't properly supported by your drivers, OS or configuration, all sorts of problems can happen. Intel drivers notoriously has problems. So if you also have an Intel graphics chip, make sure the game's not trying to use that over your NVidia card |

Thanks for the suggestions, Vod, but still no dice. I wiped my hard drive and did a clean install of Windows 10 64 Pro. Still not working. I am using two monitors stacked vertically with a Sceptre TV on top as #1 and a Hanns-G monitor on bottom (#2) as the main display with both set at 1920x1080. In Device Manager, Display adapters are listed as Intel HD Graphics 4600 (I tried disabling, but it had no effect) and then NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970. Monitors shows Generic Non-PnP Monitor followed by Generic PnP Monitor. I tried setting adapter=1 and everything from 0-3 in turn in launcher.ini. I did make sure DirectPlay is enabled in Windows Features. I didn't get any ScrDrv errors using the launcher and interface crack; only when trying variations of NHL2004.exe files I could find. In EventViewer, I usually see an error with ntdll.dll (C:\Windows\System32), but sometimes it's AcLayers.dll (C:\Windows\AppPatch), or apphelp.dll (C:\Windows\System32). I used regsvr32 on all dll files that caused errors, but most of them give an error saying: The module "<>.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found. None of the EventViewer errors show any OpCode, but here's a copy/paste of a typical error: Faulting application name: nhl2004.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x72454562 Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 10.0.10586.306, time stamp: 0x571afb7f Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x0002ea30 Faulting process id: 0x1fbc Faulting application start time: 0x01d1cfc45b176fc3 Faulting application path: C:\NHL 2004\nhl2004.exe Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll Report Id: 7beb535f-6eca-48a4-8483-27fe7c6b301c Faulting package full name: Faulting package-relative application ID: Here's the Launcher Log.txt when using the 1.5 launcher with logging on: 06/26/16, 09:06:19 - Launcher.ini loaded 06/26/16, 09:06:19 - Launcher 1.5.0 - B1 06/26/16, 09:06:19 - NHL2004.exe MD5 fingerprint retrieved: d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e 06/26/16, 09:06:19 - Timer resolution set to 1ms 06/26/16, 09:06:19 - Enabling XInput 06/26/16, 09:06:19 - Populating callback map 06/26/16, 09:06:19 - Changing the memory protection 06/26/16, 09:06:19 - Memory protection changed 06/26/16, 09:06:19 - Loading system lua scripts.. 06/26/16, 09:06:19 - Loading Bug Fixes.lua... 06/26/16, 09:06:19 - Bug Fixes.lua loaded 06/26/16, 09:06:19 - Executing file scope.. 06/26/16, 09:06:19 - Success 06/26/16, 09:06:19 - Loading CallbackCutsceneLoop.lua... 06/26/16, 09:06:19 - CallbackCutsceneLoop.lua loaded 06/26/16, 09:06:19 - Executing file scope.. 06/26/16, 09:06:19 - Assembling ASM.. 06/26/16, 09:06:19 - Allocated output memory. This sounds like an IE compatibility problem. One experimental thing you can try is: Open regedit (Run -> regedit.exe) Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\EA SPORTS\NHL 2004\ Set TitleURL key to to nhl\html\faststart.html This will bypass most of the main menu and just try to start a game with two random teams. |

After mucking around a lot in my system files and registry, I eventually got it to work properly with your fast-start registry hack, but only once. It started that once with Windows Troubleshooter set to XP SP3 as admin (which was already set), but never worked again. It was nice to see it running in 1920x1080 windowed mode, instead of the 1600x1200 maximum from the original game settings. Unfortunately, I thought I'd be able to replicate the feat, and after choosing menu->quit, it crashed with a script error on return.html (event viewer said NHL 2004.exe experienced an application hang). I checked the path in the script error and found that the file referenced in the error was working properly. Since then, it's been back to nothing but instant close after running launcher. After deleting all NHL 2004 files and registry entries, and reinstalling the game, I did finally get the nhL2004 game to work without the launcher. I think it's close to being fixed, but I have no idea what else to try. Not sure if it's relevant, but the windows file command sfc /scannow doesn't work for me, and neither does DISM /restorehealth. It's probably an issue with windows 10 64 or nvidia. I wonder if anyone else has gotten this game working on Win 10 x64 Pro with the latest Nvidia drivers and a gtx 970? Thanks again for the patience and tips. |

I'm using an Nvidia GTX 950 in Windows 10 Pro x64 without issue. Pretty close. Another thing you can try is Dependency walker. It may give you some insight. |
