![]() Seattle group has deal to buy, move Coyotes Seattle, WA -- The National Hockey League took a first step toward welcoming a new franchise to the league with Tuesday's announcement that an investment group led by Ray Bartoszek and Anthony Lanza has acquired the Phoenix Coyotes, subject to an approval process by the NHL Board of Governors that will unfold in June. Bartoszek made the announcement, accompanied on the podium by Lanza, Seattle Mayor Michael McGinn, and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. "Today, on behalf of my family, our partner Anthony Lanza and our entire organization, I am excited beyond words to announce our purchase of the Phoenicx Coyotes," Bartoszek said. "In a sense, I guess you can say our city and our state has received the call we've long since been waiting for." The sale is still pending approval by the NHL Board of Governors, which next meets on June 21 in New York. Before that, Bartoszek and Lanza will interview on June 7 with the League's Executive Committee, represented by 10 team ownership groups. At the June 21 full meeting, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly and the executive committee make a recommendation to the full Board. Then there will be two votes, one on the new ownership and another on the relocation. Transfer of ownership requires a 75 percent vote of approval, while relocation requires a majority vote. If approved, the Coyotes' move from Phoenix to Seattle is the League's second franchise relocation since 1997, when the Hartford franchise moved to Carolina, the most recent being the Atlanta Thrashers becoming the Winnipeg Jets. It is the fourth NHL relocation in the last 16 years. In the same period, the National Football League has moved four teams, while the National Basketball Association moved three franchises and Major League Baseball moved one. With an earlier attempt to lure the NBA’s Sacramento Kings to Seattle after the Supersonics left town, the city and tax payers invested countless sums of money to build a state-of-the-art facility to entice the National Basketball Association. Unfortunately the deal fell through leaving Starbucks Arena without a tenant. Until now. |

Woeful season comes to an end With the prospect of possibly even probably having to relocate at season's end, the Phoenix Coyotes season finally came to an end with a last place finish. Who could blame the players for the season many of them turned in. With the exception of Radim Vrbata who finished the year second in goals behind Washington's Alex Ovechkin, the rest of the team looked to have mailed it in. "It was a tough season," said a dejected team captain Shane Doan. "Who knows where we go from here; Seattle i'm guessing." With countless years of not drawing even the league average, team owner Jim Balsillie was left with no other choice but to sell the team to an investment group who for all intents and purposes will be moving the team to Seattle to play in the new Starbucks Arena. With a mere 32 wins in their final season in the desert, the Phoenix Coyotes will no doubt be missed by some, but for the most part not by many. A sad way for a franchise to go out to say the least. But the loss ultimately means the gain of another city and for the people of Seattle, the thought of getting a club as young and as promising as the Yotes is something many are looking forward to. Forever Financially restricted while in the desert, the expectations will be different in Washington State. Clearing the deck at the trade deadline of Mike Ribiero and his bloated contract, the club will have the flash and dazzle of rearguard Michael Del Zotto to go along with the likes of Oliver Ekman Larsson. Not to mention the first overall pick, which some have wondered if Aaron Ekblad might be already earmarked this club might be a team on the rise.

Former Coyotes GM Don Maloney 'stunned' by firing Don Maloney's only regret is that the Phoenix Coyotes didn't win more games. The outgoing president and general manager of the Coyotes spoke on Saturday about how if his team had performed better on the ice he would still be employed. "We didn't win," said Maloney, who was fired by the club on Friday after six years in Phoenix. "Obviously, your job as the GM is to bring in players that win. We didn't win. "I can stand here and say 'oh, they didn't like my personality,' but those all become pretexts and excuses later. If you win enough games you can be as obnoxious as you want to be." The 55-year-old was "stunned" but not completely surprised by the firing. "There's sometimes when you get fired and you see the vultures circling and you understand it's coming," said Maloney. "You're not sure when you're going to drop dead in the desert, but it's coming and you can see the vultures. "This one here was like a two-by-four upside the head to me. But after having a short time to digest this I can see what they're thinking. Moving to a new city with a new identity, clearly they want to usher in a new regime." Maloney began the media conference by thanking the current and former owners of the team, as well as his staff, players and coach Dave Tippett for their effort during his tenure. He also wished his successor Chris Baker, and captain Shane Doan good luck on the season that begins on October 10th. |

** Offseason Roundup ** SEATTLE, WA. – Emeralds General Manager Chris Baker was smiling like the Cheshire cat after wrapping up his first NHL Entry Draft which took place over the weekend in Philadelphia. For the Seattle faithful, the rebranding and subsequent rebuilding of the franchise took a few giant leaps on the draft floor of Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center when the club selected a bevy of high end talents. With the first overall selection, Seattle elected to go with centerman Sam Reinhart. Listed throughout the year as the consensus #1 pick on many a draft board, the Emeralds feel they have a potential top flight pivot. With their second round pick, Baker and company took the obvious choice in Haydn Fluery. A solid two-way, puck-moving defenseman, Fleury is expected to be given every opportunity to crack the opening day 23-man roster along with Reinhart. “To sit there and see the names come off the board, and see Haydn’s name still there... we couldn’t believe our eyes,” said scouting director Rick Knickle. “We had Fleury listed as the second best prospect behind Sam. We’re over the moon to have Haydn in our organization.” With the third round pick, another blue chipper seemed to fall into their proverbial laps, as gifted winger William Nylander was still available. Son of former NHL’er Michael Nylander, William is known for his great vision and deft precision passing like his father before him. At 91st overall, Seattle was happy to select power forward Nick Ritchie of the Peterborough Petes. Listed at 6-2, 218 Ritchie has been compared to the likes of Todd Bertuzzi. And finally wrapping up their day, the Emeralds chose Spencer Watson with their 5th and final pick. Offseason Moves: With the youngest Reinhart now a member of the Emeralds, Assistant GM Brad Treliving swung a deal with the Calgary Flames to acquire the eldest brother Max. To make the Reinhart family overjoyed, the Emeralds then signed defender Griffin Reinhart to a 2-year, 1.8 million dollar deal. The club also inked allstar Oliver Ekman-Larsson to a 5-year deal at 3.5 million per. Jerseys Unveiled: With much anticipation and fanfare, lead designer Andres Godoe presented the league and the rest of the hockey world with Seattle’s three jerseys the club will wear in their inaugural season. Thursday October 10th, 2014 1-0 ![]() SHOOTOUT ![]() Blueshirts Spoil Emeralds' Debut SEATTLE, WA -- The New York Rangers spoiled the party in Seattle Thursday quieting a boisterous sell-out crowd at the Starbucks Arena by defeating the hometown Emeralds 1-0 in a shootout. Despite the result, all 17,799 fans in attendance sent the hometown team off the ice with a standing ovation that forward Sam Reinhart called "incredible." "In Kootenay when we'd lose, people would be leaving halfway through the second period. Definitely to hear that, to get a standing ovation when we lose, it just shows that we're going to have fans behind us regardless." NHL hockey made its long awaited debut in Seattle Thursday. Not since 1917 while playing in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association under the name of the Seattle Metropolitans has the city of Seattle had a professional hockey team to call their own. Thursday's tilt against the Rangers marked not only the first-ever league game for the Emeralds, but also the team's home opener. After the teams were announced, the national anthem was sung by Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder along with Soundgarden lead Chris Cornell, accompanied by members of the Seattle Rock Orchestra. Afterward, a tribute to the Phoenix Coyotes was played on the arena's screens. And in a moment that showed Seattle hockey fans to be a classy lot, they clapped politely when NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman's name was announced and he took to the ice alongside owners Ray Bartoszek and Anthony Lanza for the ceremonial face-off. The crowd roared after the puck dropped to start play and continued on for the duration of all 65 minutes of regulation and overtime. During both tilts between tough guys Paul Bissonette of Seattle and Derek Dorsett of the Rangers, the crowd screams of excitement was at deafening levels. Before the game, Q13’s Jill Macyshon said fans that weren't fortunate enough to get a ticket converged in a few areas around the city, including Belltown, where 100,000 spectators were expected to watch the game on a large screen. There's a pent-up demand," Macyshon told Q13 News Channel Thursday afternoon. "There's a lot of money to be made. And the fans are going crazy; they're eating all this up." The city has been in a frenzy since the league announced on June 31 that the Coyotes would leave Phoenix and relocate to Seattle. Days later, it took the team just 17 minutes to sell 13,000 season tickets. Team owners Bartoszek and Lanza said they were "glad" the city has responded so enthusiastically to the team's arrival. “After the Supersonics left town there hasn’t been much to watch or cheer for in terms of winter sports in Seattle,” said Lanza. “Now that the Emeralds are here I can see fans really getting behind the team and really digging in.” ![]() [dohtml] <table> <tr> <td> </td> </tr>
