You're right, I totally forgot the Launcher can inject pretty much everything now into the game!

But this begs the (legal?) question: would it be necessary, theoretically, to even install the game then, if you know what I mean?

Game as old as NHL04 is probably "abandonware" already. Maybe not legally but "practically".

Not to get too off topic, but unfortunately there is no time definition placed on Abandonware. It's essentially when a developer has fully disconnected itself from any ownership of the title and earnings from it. Even not supporting it anymore doesn't qualify as Abandonware, as was learned from Windows XP when they stopped supporting it entirely and stopped selling it but were still legally protecting it because so many people refused to switch to Vista for so many years afterwards. So, sure, nobody is gonna sell NHL 04 on PC anymore, not even in used like with a PS2 NHL09 which you could theoretically still see kicking around at a Gamestop somewhere. But that doesn't mean they wouldn't have interest in protecting an older version of their current IP.
But in real terms, what are we talking about? You'd have to have millions of people paying to play a modded NHL04. And that ain't EVER gonna happen.
