Hi guys im new to this game. I was playing NHL09 for a bit but it just seemed to easy. My first game in 2009 i won the game 22-1 on beginner and it was a rather laughable experience. But i started looking for a updated game to play and seen that 09 was the end of the line. but after a lil bit i found the info about 04 rebuilt. I really had my doubts about it . but after i did the install ( took a good wile to figure out) but i was like hey this game dont look as bad as i thought ! then i played my first game on med skill and i was like ... WOW they beat the living crap out of me!!!!! i couldn't believe how much harder this game was vs 09. NHL 04 really is a way better game for more of a real hockey experience. one thing i really dislike though, it seems the computer even comes near you they get the puck almost instantly!! make for a heck of a challenge il give it that. I set up Xpadder for my Xbox 360 controller and it seems to play very well. I have to give you guys MAD PROPS for all the work you guys did in this game for the update, its amazing !! i was wondering as well are there still on line leagues that play ?? sounds incredibly fun to get in to that but i need a lot more practice first !!

the great potato: My first game in 2009 i won the game 22-1 on beginner and it was a rather laughable experience. Use correct rosters and hard level and I sure you will never score 22 goals! Sometimes I can loose with score like 0 - 8 ewen with mid-class team. |

I play them both since getting into older sports gaming again. I have to say in my personal opinion that it seems wrong to say one is better than the other although clearly the NHL modding community seems to want there to be a rivalry here. As though our intelligence is based on which one we prefer. Anyway, I like 04 because nobody is ever, EVER going to go to these lengths to offer the ability to play these old leagues ever again. It's so much work and it's wonderful. Even the graphics are great. But there is that enormous issue in my opinion with the CPU being more challenging than what is reasonable. The game is too fast and too hard. And it dissuades lots of people. Some of us don't have time to get used to it. So, I tell people to make the appropriate global tweaks in NHLView. I think 09 has a more natural gameplay experience and less smack the puck - run fast - crash into someone - check them again - steal the puck - get levelled again - smack the puck again... hockey simply isn't like that. But after doing my global tweaks to the players, it's actually fun. Same with 09. It needs some tweaks and the graphics are improved, but it does play well. Just play them both and tweak them to YOUR level. |

The 04 is too fast? Are you playing with medium dificulty settings and with rebuilt AI settings? At least for me, the game is quite slow and you have to pass to get more speed to the gameplay. And one thing is that CPU is more aggressive if you press sprint button all the time. It won't give you any time to recover or plan your gameplay. |

You have to have tuning.viv from the roster package in your \NHL 2004\db folder before the Rebuilt AI button works. Fastest players can skate around the rink in about 13 seconds in the allstar game. With that in mind, the fastest skaters in v2 (like Bure and S.Kapanen) can do pretty much the same. The speed should be okay. And yes... if you constantly keep the speed burst button pressed CPU defense will make your life miserable. ![]() There's no rivarly between NHL04 and 09. It's like comparing Kia and Mercedes. They're not in the same level at all. NHL2K series compares much better. If you have a good machine give the PS2 emulator a try. Those are decent hockey games, NHL09 is not. Difficulty level depends so much on a player. For some guys even NHL04 is too easy. I suck and play from a keyboard so it's just perfect for me. PS: Here's some gaming tips I once wrote. http://z15.invisionfree.com/NHL04Rebuilt/i...?showtopic=3774 |

It's not only a question of speed. The players are unreasonably aggressive. They just are. Every check is a body flattening check. It's like NHL Hitz. There are no bumps, missed timing checks, little nudges, only massive flattening hits. And that gets annoying for myself and a lot of other people. Once I did a global modification to aggression and checking, this became more realistic. How quickly players can get from one part of the ice to another is also unreasonable. Like the ice creates no friction. It should take longer for someone on skates to accelerate than someone on foot. I'm just talking about basic physics. I've also said, twice, "in my opinion". Just like the idea that NHL09 is or isn't a decent game. That's an opinion. Not a fact. |

No problem! Everyone has their opinion and I just try to understand that. Because in my case, players from the NHL 17 or 18 are saying that this game is so slow that it's hard to play and I have to say that after that I considered that 04 is way more slower than 17 or 18. That's why this sounds so weird and makes me think that we don't have same settings.

Wait wait wait wait.... I may have had the default settings on. I need some help here... 1. How do I know what the "Rebuilt AI" settings are? Are they the same in EACH mod? I was just playing the 93-94 mod and they look very different from the 2017-18 mod. 2. If these are just settings, can I just punch them in? Or is there more to the rebuilt AI under the surface? Thanks. I thought how can I be SO wrong about the speed? The aggression thing though, that's definitely not to my liking. |

Okay, I understand that you played some vintage mod. Some of them are really fast IMHO and I would rather slower the speed a little bit than keep those settings ![]() It's just about the settings so if you press in that AI rebuilt settings in the modern mod, then you can see those settings how it changes them. Then you can go to different mod and just set them like in the modern mod manually. |

I might have to just start from scratch and reinstall the 93-94 mod to see what the default Rebuilt AI is. Do we know where those settings are kept? And is there a file that keeps the controller configuration? I hate resetting it in every mod. |

I don't remember where those settings are (in which file, but trent knows), but every mod should have "rebuilt AI settings" button or similar in the settings where you can set those AI settings. Just press that button and you can see those settings changes |

Well then I guess they vary frm mod to mod for some reason. Because the ones in 93-94 are definitely not the ones in Rebuilt2017 |

Yeah, but that is because the time was different so of course some of those are different. If I remember right, those vintage mods are e.g. way more quicker than modern mod. Although, you can tweak them as you like. At least those modern mod settings make it more slower and more like nowdays. Back in the 90s the gameplay was totally different and there were more breakaways etc..
