Yeah, but that is because the time was different so of course some of those are different. If I remember right, those vintage mods are e.g. way more quicker than modern mod. Although, you can tweak them as you like. :) At least those modern mod settings make it more slower and more like nowdays. Back in the 90s the gameplay was totally different and there were more breakaways etc..

A-ha!... You see this is what I was asking when I first started here and I couldn't get people to understand what I was talking about.

I had asked, is there anything that makes mods from different eras different from each other in the mechanics and physics? But I never really got an answer because something about the way I asked made people not understand me. Ok, so the different Rebuilt AIs are different from mod to mod. That explains a LOT of why I feel the game plays differently.

No no, it's ok. It wasn't you. I'm talking about a post I wrote several months ago when I first found this site. I asked that and I couldn't get people to get what I was asking.

Because, I'm also part of a community for mods of an old baseball game. And there, the modders factored different era characteristics into the different mods. So in the dead ball era they affected ratings to emulate the balls not travelling as well, in other more small ball eras they adjusted ratings to lean towards base hits and livelier ground balls so I was wondering here if anyone actually took the care to "emulate" the feel of the game in different eras. I'm so impressed to see that they did. Although I don't know how we know for sure how much faster the game was in the 20s. I'd imagine with duller skates and rougher ice that the game would have been more choppy and slow and with significantly softer shots.

It's not only a question of speed. The players are unreasonably aggressive. They just are. Every check is a body flattening check. It's like NHL Hitz. There are no bumps, missed timing checks, little nudges, only massive flattening hits. And that gets annoying for myself and a lot of other people. Once I did a global modification to aggression and checking, this became more realistic. How quickly players can get from one part of the ice to another is also unreasonable. Like the ice creates no friction. It should take longer for someone on skates to accelerate than someone on foot. I'm just talking about basic physics. I've also said, twice, "in my opinion". Just like the idea that NHL09 is or isn't a decent game. That's an opinion. Not a fact.

Just following out of curiousity, nice discussion you're having. I appreciate it, and you do ask good questions tinpanalley. making good points, too!
So, I would be interested in knowing how did you tweak the agression/checking attributes, as I agree with you, these hits are way too devastating...

thanks

the only thing i notice about the game is, it seems your players are never ready for a puck, the puck flys right past them b4 they even move!! its like the game needs a HEY YOUR PLAYING HOCKEY SO WATCH THE PUCK file LOL and another thing that gets me, how can you ever set up plays?? its like if you pass it never passes the the closest player, like i can get two guys in front of net and try to center, and boom they pass it all the way across the ice to some one at the blue line.. every time im like WHAT! is it something in settings or something ?? how does the computer take the puck from you in like a split second, but ive skated down ice beating on computer players and they perfectly keep the puck then make a perfect pass .... Im like, ok how can i do that??? if the computer even comes near me the puck just magnets to there stick.

You have to aim to pass the puck. The is quite hard. But I assume that you mean those cases where it seems to be more like someone else than you. Right? It happens sometimes.

I can't speak for other vintage mods but v2 has the exact same AI that modern mod (v1) has. There's very little difference in gameplay (if any).
